THE PUNCH IN IP MAN MOVIE (O SOCO DO VING TSUN NO FILME "IP MAN A LENDA NASCE")

A câmera focaliza e a gaveta é fechada.

Si Fu was speaking to us recently, and I understand what he said was that when studying direction, one learns that different from a soap-opera, which shoots up the same plane and the characters describe all their actions, so that even if you leave the room and let the TV, just the sound able to understand the scene. In movies, much of the information is visually , as when someone opens a drawer and there is a gun. The camera focuses and the drawer is closed. Nothing was said and if you miss a scene, you lose that history section too.

Also I understood that the language of cinema, the scene has to define, even if you do not know it, who should be the focus of the viewer: "I, him or us." - In this way we are caught often enjoying a scene from different perspectives every time we see a movie, or even trough the wrong perspective.

The punches in Ving Tsun:
A question of perspective in "Ip Man - The Legend is Born"

The Ving Tsun is a variation  System consists of six domains. Each of these domains have their own rules and each trilogy as well. However, but importantly, the Ving Tsun is a system, and as such, should not be taken to its logical conclusion untill the point we want or we think can stick in certain reality "models" ("Jiu Sik") that appear over of the system.
So, Grand Master Moy Yat (photo) wrote the famous passage: "Kung Fu which has no system is not good Kung Fu . Kung Fu that depends on a system, is not good Kung Fu.".

In the movie "Ip Man - The Legend Is Born," the Grand Master Ip Chun (photo), eldest son of Ip Man  in real life, plays "Leung Bik" an ancestor who works in a pharmacy in Hong Kong and faces the young Ip Man. the two begin to fight and Ip Man protests saying that what Leung Bik uses, is not Ving Tsun. - Leung Bik says the now famous phrase: "Everything that comes out of my hands is Ving Tsun"
(Leung Bik e o jovem Ip Man discordam durante o duelo,
(Leung Bik and the young Ip Man disagree during the duel,
on the techniques used by Bik be of Ving Tsun)

Last 25 October,I completed 16 years of uninterrupted practice of this art. So if I would strike someone with a hook , it would make no sense to say: "That punch is not from the Ving Tsun" - Just because something does not appear in the system does not mean can not be used. It's all about coporal expression, the practitioner understand how to use his body optimally adjusting it to a given situation. For punch, taking Jiu Sik "Yat Ji Jung Choei" or slap someone, it's not our decision. It is a matter of assessing the scenario and see what that is more appropriate.
What happens is that perhaps the "Yat Ji Jung Choei" has a greater potential to be studied in systemic terms than a slap. But get stuck to the format, you get stuck to the system and close our eyes to the scenario where you are.

Many people ask me untill today about  this scene. Most often amazed at what was said there. As was the character of Ip Man. Are these people so in Ip Man perspective in this scene? The beginner who startled to realize that the system has more layers than he thought?

In the movie we also have the character Ng Chung Sok, played again with Yuen Biao show. We note however, that Shun Ng Sok, which is the Dai Si Hing Family Kung Fu which Ip Man is a part, is very pragmatic in criticizing Ip Man to use movements that would not be the Ving Tsun. - Same Shun Ng Sok but the film ends counting the brothers Kung Fu younger exploits of Yip Man on the use of the baton and knives. - Would Shum Ng Sok been portrayed in the film as someone who did not have access to these domains and therefore could not envision entirely the Ving Tsun System?
Anyway, I was curious to see how many people have taken this passage as true and come to believe even if you can not kick high while practicing Ving Tsun. These people seem to assume the perspective of the character Shun Ng Sok.

Furthermore, how many of us can say we were in the perspective of Leung Bik during the movie, as someone who understands that body language is free so long as adequate , in the first time we saw and even in the others?

The First Baai Si Ceremony of Moy Lin Mah Family(O Primeiro Baai Si da Família Moy Lin Mah)

I once heard that one can cross all the distance between New York and Los Angeles driving at night with only the lights of his headlights. We do not need to see all the miles that separate the two coasts, we need only see the few meters ahead. And little by little, we'll cover all the way and arrive at our destination. It turns out that when we entered the car and decided to turn the key to turn it on, for failing to see the final destination, we turn around and give up. Sometimes we put the blame on the road, in the car, or try to convince us that we will do when we have a clearer path. The road of darkness will scare a lot of people and do many other give up, and when it does some vain cry ... But so many others who cross this distance will also be crying when get there. But it will be a different cry. A difficult to explain cry, a cry that is not sad ... But that only those who had cried like that, can understand what it is ...

O Primeiro Baai Si da Família Moy Lin Mah
The First Baai Si Ceremony of Moy Lin Mah Family

A estrada do 'Mo Lam'...

Maybe that's why Master Ursula Lima, leader of  Moy Lin Mah Family,at the night she accepted her first three disciples, cried as the first one, Rodolpho Alcantra, rose to offer tea that she readily accepted then by his husband Ricardo Lopes,, the Co-leader of this family.
That cry was not by someone who had no courage to cross the US from coast to coast in the darkness of the night, but someone who walks a much longer road, a road for a lifetime ... The Road of  'Mo Lam '...
But leaving aside this abstract thing, let me tell you about that day ... One night rather, that would mark the Ving Tsun in Latin America and perhaps in the world ... And who knows, you understand ...

Down the Niemeyer Avenue, there is in the right the  Royal Tulip Hotel in Sao Conrado, the place where the I Seniors Masters Ceremony in Latin America was held in 2014, which my Master Julio Camacho took part last year, and on the last October,3 was the stage for the  I Baai Si Ceremony of Family Moy Lin Mah led by Master Ursula Lima and her husband Ricardo Lopes. That night, Rodolpho Alcantra, Helena C Ribeiro and André Villareal would be accepted as disciples in the presence of Rio representatives of the Council of Masters and the leader himself of this Council and Si Gung of the three: The Senior Master Leo Imamura.

In the hotel restaurant, members of Families of Moy Yat Lineage in Rio de Janeiro, along with their leaders and guests took their places for two ceremonies: the first, the recognition of Rodolpho, Helena and Andre as Tutors of the Basic Level of the System. The second would be the principal: The First Baai Si Ceremony of Family Moy Lin Mah

I had the honor at the request of Master Ursula Lima, make the opening sppech that so special night . About Baai Si, talking to my Master recently, he said that this invitation has much more to do with a relational character than anything else. The access of a disciple to his  Master and what he/she has to offer, even after the ceremony that formalizes this relationship will also depend a lot.
I once heard an Indian Stand-Up comedian say that having a child is like picking up a puzzle of a thousand pieces once assembled, and mess all over again. According to him,you have to got a job, find a person willing to live with you, got married with her, moved in together, and when life is fully underway, appears a child. And regardless of  planning, there is no guarantee that your child will be a nice guy.

A Baai Si, for who lives in the Chinese Martial Arts Circles goes far beyond a wedding, so for a Master as Ursula Lima, accepting in lifelong character living with three people is a great responsibility. Because any of these three can change the history of her family for better or munch through it. However, there can be no "Si Fu" without a "To Dai". In this way, if not by will but by fate that carries with her position, a Si Fu  needs to accept one that can receive his/her legacy anyway.

When you atributes the foundation of our System to Yim Ving Tsun, we understand well that in our Moy Yat Lineage since its founding we have a woman legitimately accepting a disciple in Baai Si Ceremony. So write down the names of these three and store well their faces. They made history this past month: From roght to left: Rodolpho Alcantra, Helena C Ribeiro and André Villareal.

I asked Rodolpho (photo) if he had memorized the "Hymn of the Moy Yat Ving Tsun" he would need to recite before the Baai Si . Rodolpho pretended to believe, but can not stand and started laughing. He was very elegant in black, and did not seem nervous at first sight. But the delay in answering simple questions and his wide eyes said otherwise before the ceremony started. At one point thought to ask him "What is your name" just to test how long he would take to answer..lol But I forgot ...
Rodolpho takes very seriously his relationship with his Si Fu and her husband Ricardo Lopes. It's hard to hear him speak of them without losing the words or even cry in a ceremony ...
This feeling that you have at your Si Fu, is a feeling that you can try to explain to a friend. But I doubt very much you to succeed. But I, somehow, I can understand Rodolpho ...

When I started in Ving Tsun, I found strange the lack of belts such as was used in Tae Kwon Do. But over the years, I realized that the potential increases in this way. Because in our case, when a person reaches something, the whole clan enjoyed it together. It was so when Master Ursula Lima became the first woman Master of Ving Tsun  in Latin America. Not only her as her own Master Leo Imamura benefited, as well as her kung fu brother Julio Camacho and all others who participated in her process.
So when receiving Helena (photo) as a disciple , Master Ursula  sets a new benchmark not performed since Ng Mui would have accepted Yim Ving Tsun as a disciple: A woman, Helena C Ribeiro, performs the Baai Si with another: Master Ursula Lima.
Master Leo Imamura that night, spoke of the importance of the genre not be something crucial in our Clan, however, could not fail to highlight this remarkable moment.
Helena for us in the Clan, has been a symbol in Moy Lin Mah Family from long ago. Her participation is the difference in her family and even in the Clan many times. And as Rodolpho, but in a different way. Helena carries a powerful feeling for her Si Fu, her husband and even her daughter Rebeka ...
If it is often difficult to explain the feeling you get by your Si Fu, when it reaches their children, it gets even more complicated to understand. But somehow, I can understand this aspect Helena ...

On the one hand Andre Villarreal got better clean-shaven, made me a little sad to realize that he had taken his mullet. But as the night was special, I let that one go!
Si Suk Queiroz who presented Andre that night, spoke of the emotion they had when they met in a mall near the site, and began to speak of feelings that led Andre to mobilize himself to attend that ceremony. According to Si Suk Queiroz, was a decision that Andre had to weigh a lot to take in knowing the responsibilities that this act meant in his life. But again, that mysterious feeling put him there that night.
Andre, who originally belonged to Moy Yat Sang Family, chosen and was accepted by Master Ursula for the Baai Si. And like him, I was also from Moy Yat Sang, I can understand that his feeling ...

And regardless of outsiders of Mo Lam, everyone in this photo at least. Trough  different ways, for different reasons for different people. Share this feeling. A feeling that makes you follow someone not because you fell in love or have a blood relationship, but simply because you chose that person.

Besides the Baai Si with their own Si fu, Andre, after Rodolpho and Helena, might as well do the
Baai with their Si Gung (photo). It does not need someone to do the Baai Si with Si Gung. But when  possible. This process brings an even greater symbol for this act. For Si Gung made public that night, he shared and gave his endorsement  his disciple Ursula Lima who  that night received her first three disciples.

Upon Baai Si with Si Gung, each received from Si Gung  a  pin of Moy Yat Sang Clan(photo). A symbol that only disciples can carry in their costumes.

So, here is the simple record of the night of October,3. 2015, when Master Ursula Lima made history again. Receiving the disciples:

Rodolpho Raphael Alcantara and Silva: he was named  Moy Gaap Mah (梅 甲 馬), which can be interpreted as "the protector of the family with masculine nature of the Horse"

Helena Carneiro Ribeiro: she was named Moy Gaap Lin (梅 甲 蓮), which can be interpreted as the "protector of the family with the feminine nature of the Lotus"

André Ribeiro Villarreal:  was named Moy Yuet  Mah (梅 乙 馬), which can be interpreted as "one who moves the family with masculine nature of the Horse"

(Practices with Sifu Julio Camacho at the MYVT Meier School)Práticas com Si Fu Julio Camacho no Núcleo Méier.

The photo above is from the night where Si Fu first set foot in the room that was to become the Mo Gun of his Kung Fu Family in Meier neighborhood . Friends, practitioners and members of the Kung Fu Family were present to prestige that lecture by Si Fu. But it was almost five years ago. And however much time did not erase the defining moments, a relationship "Si Fu To Dai" (Something like "Master-Disciple"), needs to be updated at all times, including a practitioner who even came to attend the Baai Si ceremony, can still be seen as an "active disciple" of this family and the clan that and members of Marcial Art Circles can do the same.
Therefore, one of the best ways to check this, is the presence of the Si Fu of someone in his Mo Gun. In other words: Your Si Gung. For the visit of Si Gung (Master of the Master) to the place where his disciple passes down his art and the subsequent establishment of a relation of the Si Gung with his To Sun ("students of the student") is showing that the relationship remains alive , and that Si gung subscribes what is done there.
In my case, I'm a Daai Si Hing representing my Si Fu in Meier School, would be much more serious if he never showed up there. Because among many reasons, it could just be a message that he can not be photographed in a location that he does not sign underneath.

Práticas com Si Fu Julio Camacho no Núcleo Méier.
(Practices with Sifu Julio Camacho at the MYVT Meier School)

Thanks to the commitment of some practitioners as the disciples Claudio Teixeira (in the photo above in the  left) and Rodrigo Moreira, it was possible that Si Fu visit our School not only through occasional visits, but of weekly scheduled activities  in Meier.
His presence covers the entire space, and receive Si Fu in Meier make me able to feel that chill down my spine as he spends his eyes carefully on each corner. Not because he is checking, but by his careful attention dedicated to every step there.

Among other commitments, Si Fu worked with some members of  their access to the Mui Fa Jong content. For me in particular, it was very important to see once again that far beyond the techniques are the experiences of Si Fu. It was as if he'd get all I could pass there in Meier about the Mui Fa Jong, he would lead to a deeper level of understanding for all of us. Something he has developed in so many times with his Kung Fu brothers and with Si Gung (whether in Brazil or abroad) and even by mobilizing people in more than two decades.

Eu peguei meu celular e comecei a tirar fotos do Si Fu(foto).

I grabbed my cell phone and started taking pictures of Si Fu (photo). He did not protest, and as if I was not there, he continued what he was saying to those present. But it was also Si Fu, who once told me that Ip Man did not let himself being photographed in Mo Gun which he would not "sign the work" being done there. And to make this possible, Ip Man simply never appeared on such places. And for that, I am happy to have the presence of my Si Fu in Meier Mo Gun. And more than that: Be able to photograph him there.

Invitation for the Baai Si of Marcos Leiras (CONVITE PARA BAAI SI DE MARCOS LEIRAS)

Old Enough To Rock and Roll" do Rainey Haynes.

Yesterday while driving to MYVT Barra School, a bike,in  that  "motocross" style, pass by my ride´s side very fast. As I was listening in my car my "Arcade Raid Mix", which has the song "Old Enough To Rock and Roll" from Rainey Haynes. The situation turned out to remember the motorcycle racing scene against a plane in the movie "Iron Eagle" wich played this song. It was quite a coincidence!
The Avenue of the Americas was free and the bike went on and on as I listened to that music coming until the return to get on the track to MYVT Barra School.
This scenario was quite different from that found hours later: Thanks to a riot, the whole Avenue of the Americas stopped, and I had to leave the car at Mo Gun and go walking to the location where the invitation to "Baai Si" of Marcos Leiras would happen. A longtime Kung Fu bro who is also very charismatic.

CONVITE PARA BAAI SI DE MARCOS LEIRAS
Invitation for the Baai Si of Marcos Leiras

Ainda posso lembrar do meu "Baai Si".

I can still remember my "Baai Si" Ceremony. On that occasion, I made this ceremony with Paula Gama and Vlad (appearing with me in the photo) and with Thiago Silva and Xenia D'Avila. Before this night of May 26, 2007 however, we attended a dinner at Paula Gama's house, where Si Fu and clan members were present to formalize our invitation.
That night perhaps, was the embryo of what happened again yesterday at the Downtown Mall ...

Upon arriving at Galli Restaurant, several wooden tables joined to form another large table. As the atmosphere was dark, i Marcos Leiras used nice red lanterns , and made a very beautiful decoration. On each plate was a napkin with the name of who would occupy that place.
Marcos wore a monk clothes, something that drew attention wherever he went, but I did not ask why he chose those clothes, we just hug each other and a little later Si Fu arrived and preferred after about ten minutes to go with everyone inside the restaurant.

This dinner is the first step in the process of the  "Baai Si" in our Family: Invitation during a meal, ceremony and the delivery of the  Kung Fu name at  Si Fu's home.
Si Fu began the night, asking if they knew what was "Baai Si," after talking about how much that moment was special to him. Si Fu said last night that "Baai Si" (拜師), meaning is "to honor the Si (師)", which is "Si (師)" component of the term "Si Mun" (師 門) or what we call "Kung Fu Family '.
Therefore, "Baai Si" (拜師) in this case would be something like "honor the ancestors."

So we see in this picture the "Dai Si Hing"of  Family Moy Lin Mah, Rodolpho Alcantra, revering a picture of Si Taai Gung Moy Yat, in the First Ceremony of Baai Si of this family which there the pic represented the entire ancestry of Ving Tsun,
So if in the future this disciple became corrupt and do stupid things, the responsibility for his actions will be to the Ving Tsun as a whole, not just with his Si Fu.
You can follow all the Baai Si Ceremony of Moy Lin Mah click (HERE)

The table was made by weight disciples of Moy Jo Lei Ou Family as Pedro Ivo "Moy Yi Woh" Carlos Antunes "Moy Shan Si" and Thiago Silva "Moy Chi Yau Si". Antunes is the champion of the "Luk Dim Bun Gwaan" in our family and a reference as a human being, as has always been another Kung fu brother, Vladimir Anchieta before him. And Thiago Silva is the director of the MYVT Barra School.
I, who am Director of MYVT Meier School and disciple as they are was also there. Besides us Bruno Brandão, Thales Guimarães and Pedro Correa made up the table.
As "Gaai Siu Yan," Marcos Leiras invited the Master Felipe Soares "Moy Fei Lap" director of the MYVT Freguesia School and also our Si Suk (or "Kung Fu younger uncle"). Which means that it is of the same generation of our Si Fu but entered in the Family Moy Yat Sang after him)

Si Fu spoke highly about his relationship with Marcos Leiras. One thing that has always been supported in the heart of both sides, but had not formalized through the "Baai Si". Only after years, last night, Marcos Leiras who had a little health problem, finally was able to go to Si Fu just before the ceremony of Moy Lin Mah Family last 3 October, and talk alone with him on the possibility of holding the "Baai Si".
Si Fu also gave the floor to those present, especially his disciples at the table. Each in its own way, spoke about what it means to be a disciple, a defining moment with Si Fu and a possible meaning to its name Kung Fu.
For Pedro ,Antunes, Silva and also for me, becomes an arduous task to list one or two moments of this relationship that goes beyond what we can describe in words. Which is great. And that's why, I hope Leiras from this moment in fact, may have the same trouble very soon..

Um pouco sobre Leung Jaan e novas descobertas na Medicina Tradicional Chinesa (A little bit about Leung Jaan and new discovers in Chinese Medicine)

In the '80s, hundreds of American magazines publications was trying to trace the history of Bruce Lee, spoke about Ip Man. And the movies from "Ip Man" series made him the most iconic figure of Ving Tsun (Wing Chun) to pop culture. But before him, the ancestor with more literary publications and films about him was Leung Jaan. Who happened to be Si Gung of Ip Man (Or, "Master of his Master").
In most of his film appearances, Leung Jaan was played by the talented actor Yuen Biao (photo). As we see above, in the 1982 movie scene "The Prodigal Son" or "Ba Ga Jaai".

In 2005, Yuen Biao still played Leung Jaan in the soap opera "Faat Saan Jaan Sing Sang" ("Mr. Jaan from Faat Saan"). But it was only in 2007 under the invitation of his Si Hing Sammo Hung (photo), Yuen Biao went back to his definitive and exciting interpretation of Leung Jaan in "Wing Chun" soap-opera.
With an much more mature play, and going away from the slapstick comedy that always prowled his performances as Leung Jaan, Yuen Biao gives us a Ving Tsun Si Fu  consistent and that really makes you believe that Leung Jaan could have been that way. Although Nicolas Tse, who plays his son Leung Bik and Sammo Hung who plays Wong Wah Bo, have almost committed the show with their poor performances.

Mestres Seniors da Moy Yat Ving Tsun na Vila natal de Leung Jaan)
(My Si Fu Julio Camacho and my Si Baak Nataniel Rosa, both
Masters Seniors of Moy Yat Ving Tsun in the native village of Leung Jaan)

My Si Fu spent more than once in Gu Lo, home village of Leung Jaan. Leung Jaan became so celebrated in this way, because although not being a native citizen of Faat Saan(Fo Shan), his martial prowess was such that received several nicknames that were actually honors, "Mister Jaan from Faat Saan", "The King of Ving Tsun, "" Fist of Faat Saan ", etc .. etc ...
To give you an idea, it's like an Argentinian soccer football player (what americans call "soccer"), became for a time the greatest reference to football fans in Brazil while he lived in our country.

But more than his martial skill, which made Leung Jaan also very well known, was the way he exercised his profession of medic-pharmacist, who also would have been the factor that would lead Leung Yi Taai, to accept him as a disciple and transmit the legacy of Ving Tsun.
Leung Jaan took care of those in need without charge, only charged for the services people who could afford to pay for them.
In the 2007 soap-opera we see how this attitude ends up compromising the finances of his family.

It turns out that even being nice to the needy when they came to medicine, with Ving Tsun did not happen the same: Leung Jaan would have been extremely strict in acceptance of his disciples, who throughout his career totaled only six people. The latter being the Si Fu of Ip Man, Chan Wah Sun, who managed to join the group only after much insistence by Fung Wah .your friend who was already part of the Family Kung Fu of Leung Jaan.

An international group of scientists working on the project "TCM Cancer", funded by the European Union (EU), has just discovered anticancer compounds in 100 plants and herbs used in traditional Chinese medicine.
The objective now is to use these substances to develop more effective cancer treatments that can replace chemotherapy, which causes severe side effects.
"Most, if not all, of the drugs used in chemotherapy have serious side effects, which can affect healthy cells as well as essential functions of the body," explains André Steinmetz fromthe Centre for Health Public Research in Luxembourg and leader of the project.
"So the search and study of new compounds that specifically kill cancer cells but have no side effects, are needed," said the guardian.
The "TCM Cancer" focuses mainly on the identification and characterization of compounds used in traditional Chinese medicine and that may act against cancers of the breast, lung and brain.

ABRINDO O MO GUN (OPENNING THE KUNG FU SCHOOL)

Once Si Fu (photo) talked to me something that may sound obvious, but for me it was brand new:. "When it comes to doors, we are not talking about this wooden object that you open and close but , the portal you passes trough". - Si Fu was speaking of the term "Mun", that although mean "door" is used for "Kung Fu Family" in Cantonese.
Tudo bem?"

In this photo, we celebrate nine years of Si Suk Ursula (photo) in the Family Kung Fu in the ancient Si Fu office in the Jacarepagua School. I can still remember the first time I was alone in Mo Gun. Si Suk Ursula had to go to the bank and asked me to take care of Mo Gun. As the Mo Gun was in front of the street , many people passing stopped to ask about.
Before leaving, realizing that I was nervous, she said, "Pereira, when someone touch the bell, you come here, look who is and If you feel you should not open, you have authorization for it . all right..?" - That line made me calmer.
Months later, I slept for the first time in Mo Gun. I was very impressed by Si Fu entrust the keys to me.

Today, a number of years after being the Director of  Moy Yat Ving Tsun Meier School, for often slept and sleep in Mo Gun. It turned out in really become my second home. Sometimes, as in the photo above, I get here to keep working on some project. Other times, I sleep here because the next day will start early. No matter the reason, but caught my attention when I once went to open the door of my old house and could not because I used the Mo Gun keys. Also, when I tried to open the Mo Gun using my house keys.

I think this is a great time: The time the practitioner confuses keys
of Mo Gun with the ones of his house.
