Moy Yat Institute Visits the Renowned Pedro II School in Rio de Janeiro

Tive a honra de representar o Instituto Moy Yat, na condição de Secretário-Geral, ao lado do meu discípulo Daniel Eustáquio e do meu aluno Nathan de Assis, em uma atividade realizada no tradicional Colégio Pedro II, na cidade do Rio de Janeiro. A participação ocorreu a convite da Professora Dora Coutinho, integrante da equipe de Educação Física, em um trabalho desenvolvido com aproximadamente 250 alunos do 3º ano do Ensino Médio de diferentes turmas.

O Colégio Pedro II – Campus Realengo é uma das unidades da histórica instituição federal de ensino, amplamente reconhecida pela excelência acadêmica, pela formação integral de seus estudantes e por sua relevante contribuição para a educação brasileira ao longo de sua trajetória.

Um dos aspectos que mais me marcou durante essa experiência foi a forma calorosa com que fomos recebidos pelos alunos. A atenção, o respeito, a educação e o genuíno interesse em aprender demonstrados por eles revelaram um ambiente escolar verdadeiramente diferenciado. Da mesma forma, durante o café da manhã com a Professora Dora, bem como ao longo de toda a atividade com os demais membros da equipe de Educação Física, foi possível perceber o compromisso sincero desses profissionais em promover experiências transformadoras para seus estudantes.

O resultado desse trabalho se refletiu não apenas no elevado nível de participação dos alunos, mas também na empatia, receptividade e atenção que recebemos durante toda a manhã. Foi uma experiência enriquecedora e inspiradora, que reforçou a importância da educação de qualidade e do papel fundamental de educadores comprometidos com a formação humana de seus alunos.

I had the honour of representing the Moy Yat Institute in my capacity as Secretary-General, alongside my disciple Daniel Eustáquio and my student Nathan de Assis, in an activity held at the renowned Pedro II School in Rio de Janeiro. Our participation took place at the invitation of Professor Dora Coutinho, a member of the Physical Education Department, as part of a programme involving approximately 250 students from various classes in their final year of secondary education.

Pedro II School – Realengo Campi is one of the units of this historic federal educational institution, widely recognised for its academic excellence, its commitment to the holistic development of its students, and its significant contribution to Brazilian education throughout its distinguished history.

One of the aspects that left the greatest impression on me throughout this experience was the warm reception we received from the students. Their attentiveness, respectfulness, courtesy, and genuine eagerness to learn revealed a truly remarkable educational environment. Likewise, during breakfast with Professor Dora, as well as throughout the morning alongside the other members of the Physical Education Department, it was possible to perceive the sincere commitment of these professionals to providing potentially transformative experiences for their students.

The outcome of this work was reflected not only in the high level of student engagement, but also in the empathy, hospitality, and consideration that the three of us received throughout the morning. It was an enriching and inspiring experience that reinforced the importance of quality education and the fundamental role played by educators who are deeply committed to the human development of their students.

Um dos aspectos importantes do compromisso de salvaguarda de um legado é, exatamente segundo a UNESCO, a promoção de um determinado Patrimônio Cultural Intangível, como é o caso do Sistema Ving Tsun. Ter a oportunidade de promover o Sistema Ving Tsun da Linhagem Moy Yat no Colégio Pedro II foi uma experiência muito especial para mim.

Desde quando o convite surgiu, por intermédio do Mestre Diego Guadalupe, sem qualquer hesitação o aceitei, e nenhuma adversidade nesse processo me impediria de levar algo tão importante para jovens nessa faixa etária quanto o Ving Tsun.

Acredito, a partir da convivência com o Grão-Mestre Leo Imamura, que a prática do Sistema Ving Tsun atua durante a conduta. Não antes, como um manual, nem depois. O entendimento do critério, enquanto se pratica, regula o gesto enquanto ele acontece.

E um coração apontado para esse tipo de sutileza pode, sim, promover uma melhor apreciação não apenas dos bons momentos, mas também dos desafios que aguardam esses jovens em um futuro próximo.

One of the important aspects of the commitment to safeguarding a legacy is, according to UNESCO, the promotion of a particular Intangible Cultural Heritage, as is the case with the Ving Tsun System. Having the opportunity to promote the Moy Yat Lineage Ving Tsun System at Pedro II School was a very special experience for me.

From the moment the invitation arose through Master Diego Guadalupe, I accepted it without hesitation, and no adversity throughout the process would have prevented me from bringing something as important as Ving Tsun to young people of this age group.

Through my years of learning and living alongside Grandmaster Leo Imamura, I have come to believe that the practice of the Ving Tsun System operates during conduct itself. Not beforehand, as a manual, nor afterwards. The understanding of the criterion, while one practises, regulates the gesture as it takes place.

And a heart oriented towards this kind of subtlety can indeed foster a greater appreciation not only of life's good moments, but also of the challenges that await these young people in the near future.

Daniel e Nathan estavam um pouco preocupados com o que seria trabalhado nesta oportunidade, porém não queriam transparecer isso. Eu também já tive esse sentimento inúmeras vezes. Talvez o que os deixava mais preocupados fosse a quantidade de alunos e se eles se manteriam conectados com o trabalho.

Eu sempre repito que o nome do Moy Yat Ving Tsun Safeguard Group é uma escolha muito feliz. Pois, quando você interioriza o propósito que é a "salvaguarda", todos os receios ficam em segundo plano. Você deixa de tentar controlar as variáveis e passa a enxergar a oportunidade memso quando ela é ínfima.

Depois disso, você precisa apenas se perguntar como se colocar a serviço, da melhor maneira possível, da pessoa que está liderando o processo, da organização que está liderando o processo ou, naquela manhã em particular, a serviço do próprio Sistema Ving Tsun.

A prática desta arte marcial ainda é mágica para mim, assim como foi quando a vi pela primeira vez. Se eu simplesmente não atrapalhar e deixar os participantes terem acesso àquilo que vamos mostrar do Sistema, não tem como dar errado.

Daniel and Nathan were somewhat concerned about what would be involved in this opportunity, although they did not wish to show it. I have experienced that feeling countless times myself. Perhaps what concerned them most was the number of students and whether they would remain engaged with the work.

I often say that the name Moy Yat Ving Tsun Safeguard Group is a particularly fortunate choice. When you truly internalise the purpose of “safeguarding”, all fears are relegated to the background. You stop trying to control every variable and begin to recognise the opportunity, even when it appears to be very small.

After that, you simply need to ask yourself how best to place yourself at the service of the person leading the process, the organisation leading the process, or, on that particular morning, at the service of the Ving Tsun System itself.

The practice of this martial art is still magical to me, just as it was when I first encountered it. If I simply avoid getting in the way and allow the participants to have access to what we are going to present of the System, there is no way it can go wrong.

Um dos momentos mais marcantes foi deixar o Daniel (à direita) conduzir o trabalho por cerca de 10 minutos junto do Nathan (à esquerda). Ambos estavam muito determinados e atentos.
Assistir aquele menino de oito anos, de cabelo em forma de cuia, agora com 22 anos, falando para um público de 120 jovens, todos atentos às suas palavras, bem como ver o Nathan, que quatro anos atrás apareceu completamente tímido, falando frases soltas, ali na frente, foi algo muito especial.

Esse tipo de conduta só é possível de ser adquirida com o tempo, pela convivência, observando, participando, errando, ajustando e amadurecendo, dentro daquilo que o Patriarca Moy Yat chamava de "Vida Kung Fu".

One of the most memorable moments was allowing Daniel (on the right) to lead the session for approximately ten minutes alongside Nathan (on the left). Both were highly determined and attentive.

Watching that eight-year-old boy with his bowl-shaped haircut, now 22 years old, speaking to an audience of 120 young people, all attentively listening to his words, as well as seeing Nathan, who four years ago arrived extremely shy and speaking only in short, disconnected phrases, standing there in front of them, was something very special.

This type of conduct can only be acquired over time, through living, observing, participating, making mistakes, making adjustments, and maturing within what Patriarch Moy Yat referred to as the “Kung Fu Life”.

Acredito fortemente que este foi um importante marco para o Instituto Moy Yat, tendo em vista a relevância de reapresentar o Sistema Ving Tsun à sociedade(através de um meio tão importante como o acadêmico), fazendo uso de toda a riqueza da nossa Linhagem, cuidadosamente curada pela equipe da “Sala da Memória” do próprio Instituto.

Mesmo os melhores profissionais em seus respectivos segmentos precisam se sustentar ao longo do tempo sob a pressão que suas carreiras ocasionalmente lhes impõem. Da mesma forma, um profissional que identifique sua vocação mais adiante precisará saber como realizar a transição de carreira de forma estratégica, encontrando equilíbrio e estabilização durante o movimento.

Deixo aqui, em nome do Instituto Moy Yat, o meu sincero agradecimento à Professora Dora, à equipe e aos alunos.

Eu nunca desisti.

I strongly believe that this was an important milestone for the Moy Yat Institute, given the significance of reintroducing the Ving Tsun System to society (through such an important medium as the academic environment), making use of the full richness of our Lineage, carefully curated by the “Memory Room” team of the Institute itself.

Even the most accomplished professionals in their respective fields must sustain themselves over time under the pressure that their careers occasionally impose upon them. Likewise, a professional who identifies their vocation at a later stage will need to know how to manage a career transition strategically, finding balance and stability in motion.

On behalf of the Moy Yat Institute, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Professor Dora, her team, and the students.
