WHAT IS A "SI HING"(師兄)? AN ESSAY ON A SUCH COMPLEX TERM FROM "MO LAM".

(Entre 2007 e 2015, representei meu Si Fu no bairro do Méier.

(Between 2007 and 2015, I represented my Si Fu in the Méier neighborhood. During that period, many of my Kung Fu brothers started under my tutelage. After being titled Master and inaugurating my Kung Fu Family, they gradually sought their direct contact with our Si Fu. This photo was taken on the day that part of this group accessed the Final Top Level "Baat Jaam Do". The photo with Si Fu is emblematic in itself, as it symbolizes a "side-by-side" journey that needed renew.)

Numa Família Kung Fu, temos duas figuras muito conhecidas: O Si Hing(師兄) e o Si Dai(師弟).

In a Kung Fu Family, we have two very well-known figures: Si Hing (師兄) and Si Dai (師弟).
When we speak of the martial arts circles that we call "Mo Lam" (武林), we are referring to an immanent world within everyday society itself. And as such, it has its own rules. One of its most striking features is the use of the Si (師) ideogram present in the terms used so that we can refer to a member of our Si Mun (師 門) that we understand as "Kung Fu Family". So, even for a native of the general language and dialects present in China, there are no translations for terms like Si Hing (師兄) and Si Dai (師弟), they just "are". And because we have languages in the West that do not understand the full range of developments in the Chinese language, we tend to adapt to "older brother" (Hing 師兄) and "younger brother" (Dai 師弟). But note, that this translation does not include Si (師). Therefore, we adapted again and started to use "Elder Kung Fu Brother " (Si Hing 師兄) and "Younger Kung Fu Brother  " (Si Dai 師弟).
Note that we now have a english translation, which includes the relational function ("Elder or younger brother") and nature ("Kung Fu").

(The photo above shows my Si Mo and Si Fu watching me while I perform "Siu Nim Do", a sequence of movements present in the Experience Program of our Clan. I didn't know that I would do it, but as a the oldest member of the Kung Fu Family present , maybe Si Fu found it interesting to ask me to show it to the rookies. By nature I’m very shy, but for more than twenty years, I understood the importance of honoring my "social role" within "Mo Lam". it does not mean that I don't stay shy or can't make mistakes. It just means that understanding my function as "Si Hing" helps me better manage those emotions and insecurities.)

According to Professor Karen L. Lai, in her work "A introduction to chinese philosophy" (2008): ... "In Chinese philosophy, an individual is in essence a 'oneself' constituted and relationally situated. This means that there are many factors that shape the 'oneself', including its relationships with significant people and its experiences within its historical, cultural, social and political contexts ... "

In her book, Professor Karen L. Lai, divides the Confucian doctrine between "Rites" and "Humanity". And within that ritual / formal / protocol bias, she said that it maps different patterns to appropriate behavior according to someone's place in a given relationship. In this way, individuals are familiar with the different obligations and emotions that are appropriate in specific relationships. According to her, the continuous practice of this protocol bias of Confucian logic, fosters a deeper appreciation of human relations.

(Eu e meu irmão Kung Fu Mais novo Vladimir Anchieta.

(Me and my younger brother Kung Fu Vladimir Anchieta. Regardless of our age difference of fourteen years , I was admitted to the Kung Fu Family before. That made me the oldest Kung Fu brother, or "Si Hing")

As the classical Chinese culture is exotic to ours and all of its internal structure. A person can only understand and experience what "Kung Fu Life" is, if he is under the tutelage of someone who has also experienced it. The "oldest" or Si Hing (師兄), is a person on this journey who has a responsibility with the function he occupy within a Kung Fu Family structure in relation to someone who occupies the function of the "youngest" called Si Dai (師弟). But note, that one thing is "function" or "situation" and quite another thing is "play a role". It is like a mother, she has the social function of a mother, but it is something quite different, of how she will perform this function.
In some cases the relationships within the Kung Fu Family will be so close, that there will be a tendency to confuse the person and the function that he occupies.
My Si Fu would have said once, that we could preserve the Kung Fu Family for this other type of relationship, and leave the friendship for itself, for relationships outside the Family.

In my case and that of Vladimir (PHOTO above), we are very like each other very much. But there has always been a very clear respect in our treatment, which has guided our interactions over the decades. After twenty years, we can speak with pride, which we never have been disrespectful with eah other. And when we practice, we don't hold hands either when it comes to striking.

(Me and my younger Kung Fu brother Rodrigo Moreira. I met Rodrigo at college, and more than ten years later he was admitted to the Kung Fu Family. Although we had the same Si Fu, he practiced under my tutelage in the Méier neighborhood, for to be closer to his house. This caused us some confusion).

Imediatamente minha postura mudou e me percebi "atuando no papel" de Si Hing(師兄).

When we confuse "function" with "playing a role", we end up putting aside who we are, to live a character within a relationship. In addition, we expect the same behavior from our peer. It was a case of luck, when my younger Kung Fu brother  Rodrigo, was admitted to the Kung Fu Family. Immediately my posture changed and I did not find myself playing the function of Si Hing (師兄) but just playing a role. As a result, our relationship became extremely mechanical and I often abused it, making myself  almost a Si Fu (師父) for him. Over time, Rodrigo started to relate to our Si Fu directly, and so we two understand , our positions within the Kung Fu Family. It was no longer the case that I mentored and Rodrigo followed, but now, we argue and question ourselves. Our relationship has become light again, and today I see ourselves much more understanding of it than before. his admission to the Family. So I would say that there is no "Si Hing (師兄) role" but a "function".
(Com Si Fu e meus irmãos Kung Fu Claudio e Carlos num restaurante da Zona Oeste do Rio)
(With Si Fu and my Kung Fu brothers  Claudio and Carlos in a restaurant in the West Zone of Rio)

]
Quando falamos em Si Fu (師父) e seu To Dai(徒弟), estamos falando de um "seguidor"(To Dai 徒弟).

When we talk about Si Fu (師父) and his To Dai (徒弟), we are talking about a "follower" (To Dai 徒弟). It is up to a "follower" to develop the art of "following". It is different from the relations between Si Hing (師兄) and Si Dai (師弟). There is no "follower" in the Si Hing-Dai (師 兄弟) relationship. There are people in different positions within a family organization, with different functions. The art is in understanding how they get along. Since according to Karen L. Lai, in the "Analects" of Confucius (15:24) there is the concept of "shu", which can be translated as "reciprocity" or "mutuality", which captures the essence that there is an exchange in relations.

So, when a Si Hing (師兄) comes across a Si Dai (師弟) that has just arrived, it is easy to deposit a series of guidelines and demands on him, since the Si Dai (師弟) will not be able to question the Si Hing (師兄). With maturity, the Si Dai (師弟) can better understand his position and function in the Family, and the Si Hing (師兄) still does not. Therefore, sometimes the Si Hing (師兄) will be frustrated waiting for Si Dai (師弟) to "play a role", which he played before, although without knowing it.

This essay emerged from a scene that marked me a lot in the excellent documentary series "The Last Dance" (Available on NETFLIX). In it, Michael is confronted by testimonies from former teammates saying how difficult it was to live with him. His thirst for victory, pushed his teammates to the limit in training and day to day. Says Michael Jordan visibly moved: "... I don't have to do it that way. The only reason I act like this, is because this is me, this is how I play the game ... This is my mentality. If you don't want to play that way ... Don't play that way ... "
(Momento divertido com meus irmãos kung fu
Thiago Silva e Carlos Antunes no casamento do Si Fu e Si Mo.)

(Fun time with my kung fu brothers
Thiago Silva and Carlos Antunes at the wedding of Si Fu and Si Mo.)

Therefore, sometimes we get so close to our Kung Fu brothers in the personal field, that when the time comes, we no longer have the condition of Si Hing (師兄) to show the hole. It is like a "Chi Sau" practice, you should not refuse an invitation to do "Chi Sau" and if the other person opens the center line you should go foward it. And if we are unable to act according to our Si Hing (師兄) function. I believe we are doing what Si Fu told us not to do: Put friendship before function. So, it is as if there is an imbalance between the process of humanity and formality.
And who knows, at the end of the day, we realize that the blow we didn't want to shoot at a dear Kung Fu brother. It has more to do with our commitment to play the role of a nice guy, than not having a ceremony to strike.

CHUNG CHI (衝刺) : THE VING TSUN WAY TO KEEP MOVIN' FOWARD

("Jiu Paai" feito or William Franco, escrito: "Moy Jo Lei Ou Mun")
("Jiu Paai" made by William Franco, written: "Moy Jo Lei Ou Mun")

Once I was watching, without saying anything, the statement of a dear brother Kung Fu, who wanted to go away not only from the practices but from the activities related to the Kung Fu Family. He presented a series of reasons to Si Fu (seated in front of him), which seemed so perfectly wrong, that seemed to make complete sense. Si Fu listened patiently, and when it was his turn to speak, Si Fu gave different propositions for each of his problems ("Propositions" not "Solutions"). Still, my Kung Fu brother was adamant. He said goodbye, and went out the door of Mo Gun. Si Fu would have said: "... He will come back ...." - Si Fu smiled still looking at me and added: "... But think about that: If 'he will comes back', is it really necessary to go away? Is necessary to have this bad time of having to leave? " - Si Fu smiled again and continued: "Right now he is thinking about his decision taking the elevator. Deep down he knows he doesn't have to go, but he took a position and didn't give up on it. Now he is stuck with that .. . "- and quickly changed the subject.

We call CHUNG CHI (衝刺), the "Intent to move forward". When I started, they said "Energy forwards", but over the years, Si Fu dedicated himself to digging deeper into the topics covered and how to refer to a certain thing with assertiveness.
According to him, in one of his visits to MYVT Meier School, he spoke about the concept known in the West as "FENG SHUI" (Fung Seoi, 風水), which "Fung" (風) would be the "wind" and "Seoi" (水 ) "Water". Si Fu then asked those present: "What happens to the water if it stops?" - He added: "It rots, right? And with the wind? ..." - He paused and someone answered. Si Fu said: "Yes! If the wind stops, it will stop being wind".

Si Fu then explained about "FENG SHUI" (Fung Seoi, 風水), having to do with "Movement". - "... The water never comes back. If it encounters an obstacle, it creates a new way ..."
(Si Fu in the management area, from the second address in the West Zone of Rio, in the early 2000s)

Throughout the years of his career, I was able to follow different moments of Si Fu, using resources where there seemed to be only a shortage to move on. The same intention to advance, so present in the practice of Chi Sau, was possible to be seen in each of the stages of his career. Maybe that's why, in 2012, when MYVT Meier School, was with very few practitioners, he told me when I called him worried: "... If you get excited when you have many students, or despair when you have few. You are not prepared to direct a School..."
(Si Fu poses, with one of the billboards displayed in the West Zone, in one of our mktg campaigns)

In the uncertain moment that we are going through economically, this concept of CHUNG CHI (衝刺), of moving forward, becomes essential. And perhaps for my Si Fu so used to moving regardless of the obstacle, he wondered at that moment, why my Kung Fu brother was giving up (even if momentarily) the relationship.

(Si Fu between Si Hing Leonardo and me: Si Fu's first two disciples to become Masters)

Sometimes it may be more difficult to live, but the world does not stop. And only those who have CHUNG CHI (衝刺), can keep moving foward...Like water.

Ambos, discípulos do Mestre Senior Julio Camacho, líder do Clã Moy Jo Lei Ou.

One of the postures that calls the attention of the beginners in the Ving Tsun System, is the stance called "Yi Ji Kim Yeung Ma". For unlike anything we have as a reference when we think of positions related to a martial practice. "Yi Ji Kim Yeung Ma" doesn't look like any of them.
Because its shape is so exotic to most, many have a misunderstanding of its hidden potentials. And in today's article, we bring an episode of "Kung Fu Culture" with the participation of Master Thiago Pereira (Djretor of  Moy Yat Ving Tsun Martial Intelligence Méier School) and Rodrigo Moreira (Assistant Director of  Tijuca Studio of Moy Yat Ving Tsun Martial Intelligence). Both, disciples of Senior Master Julio Camacho, leader of the Moy Jo Lei Ou Clan.

NEW LEGENDS OF KUNG FU MASTERS: "A STUPID QUESTION ABOUT 'WODDEN DUMMY' "

("Mui Fa Jong" seminar in 2009)

Adoro 'perguntas idiotas'! 'Perguntas idiotas' costumam ser as melhores!" .

It was 2009, a challenging year. I was about to turn ten years as a member of my Kung Fu Family, and that year Si Gung Leo Imamura visited us for two days of Seminary. One day, the theme would be "Biu Ji" on the other, "Mui Fa Jong". I, of course, participated in the two days of activities.
Practitioners not only from the MYVT Rio de Janeiro School (as it was called at the time), but from other states were present. And Si Gung gave a brief opening of the "Mui Fa Jong" Domain seminar, making some considerations about the wooden dummy (Muk Yan Jong). In the end, he would have asked, "Does anyone have any questions or concerns?" Glancing around, I noticed no one got in, so I raised my hand. - "Come on, Thiago!" - Said Si Gung. Everyone fell silent, and realizing that attention was turning to me, I said, "It's a stupid question ..." - Si Gung said in a loud voice, "Great! I love 'stupid questions'!' 'usually they are the best ones! " . Some of those people present laughed, and I decided to ask my question: "Si Gung, I was wondering why Muk Yan Jong didn't have an arm on the top."-  When I just asked the question, some of the present people that had the same time in Kung Fu Family than me, laughed out loud. This time, however, Si Gung was not joking when he said, "I don't know the reason for the laughter. This was the smartest question I have been asked in all these years about 'Muk Yan Jong'. I believe it is the doubt of many here."
To this day, I don't know if Si Gung said that to preserve me or if it had really been a good question ...

"KUNG FU LIFE" PERSONAL REPORT TO MY STUDENTS.

Unlike a martial arts school wich objective is only training. A "Mo Gun", while a "Kung Fu House" of a Kung Fu Family like mine. Always has some surprise. It is not uncommon, for example, that all of a sudden, all students in one night skip class. And that way, that Family member you don't have much contact with will appear and the birth of the relationship actually happens there.
That's how it was last Thursday in the Méier neighborhood. Me, my disciple Cayo Cesar, and two To Dai: Andre and Rafa. We had a very special and intimate moment where I could share moments of my twenty years in the Kung Fu Family, to be celebrated the next day.
Those present asked very special questions that helped me talk about the topic. And even though we had a good time. There is an instrument in the Moy Yat Ving Tsun Martial Intelligence Program for these occasions, for people who dont have many time.

Si Gung shared on his last visit to the MYVT Freguesia School, that socially the relationship "Si Fu-To Dai" is not understood. He commented in a tone that ranged from jest to seriousness, that our spouse is under no obligation to understand that you will meet Si Fu for dinner and pay for that dinner. And it is because of our lack of time and understanding of the "Kung Fu Life Provision" that the Moy Yat Ving Tsun Martial Intelligence Program and its instruments exist. They will allow, from a scheduled time, that opportune moments like the one we lived last Thursday could happen.

Grand Master Leo Imamura's inspiring words about professionalism and leadership.

It was supose to be an afternoon of much learning about Siu Nim Tau in the MYVT Freguesia School , Mo Gun of the Moy Fei Lap Family, Kung Fu Family wich is led by Master Felipe Soares. It turns out that with just a few minutes of seminar, I was surprised by Grand Master Leo Imamura's strong and inspiring words (Photo) about what it is and how to be a martial arts professional.
We experience uninterrupted transitions all the time, and since most of these transformations are "micro-transformations," we do not realize when they occur. At other times we may feel that they are happening. And I find myself in a very strong moment of transition as a Si Fu . And maybe that's why those words touched me so much ...

Si Gung spoke of the importance of working hard to understand what we are doing and what our social role is. He commented on the ancestral table, and how the relationship to the "invisible efficiency" of this ancestry can help us learn how to better understand ourselves with the "not apparent" - "A leader needs to be able to feel things in the air. .." - He said.
Si Gung also commented on the weakness we carry when we first choose to "deny" first. And since the relationship "Si Fu-To Dai" is important in this respect - "... When someone tells us something, we first deny it and then listen ... A Si Fu is a person you have chosen to be the only one you will not deny first. You will first listen and only then deny ... If it is needed to ... "

But what really touched me was yet to come: Si Gung at one point began to share with those present very strongly and assertively about his view of the martial arts professional: "... I recently had the opportunity to talk about 'professionalism in martial arts' at the MYVT Copacabana School. It was very important to talk about it, because people want to work with martial arts, but they're not really prepared. Being a martial arts professional is being a warrior ... " - He said that, with the tone of the voice of those who lived those words: "... There is no possibility of being a martial arts professional without being a warrior. There are people who if in the end of the month, is not able to pay the bills , can not even sleep ... The person is so afraid that can not even sleep .. . ... "- Continued. - "... I've been working with martial arts ....considering the time I'm joined the Family, it's thirty years ago ... Thirty-one years as a professional ... And you know how my month starts ? "- He gestured to a number with his right hand and laughed, seeming to notice the surprise in some of the eyes:" ... But no problem, I'm going slowly ... "

Si Gung ended his speech by commenting on the importance of asking ourselves if "we have the stomach" to perform this function.
Those were words that touched me, and along with others I heard in the early hours of the Seminar, they made me reflect a lot not only on the work I have been doing. But mostly, about the way I do this work.
"... You pay dinner for your Si Fu, because of the whole table, he is the one who is paying attention to everything, to be able to provide Kung Fu Life. Now, if Si Fu is just there to eat , he has to pay the bill too .. "- Said Si Gung.

TAKING SI FU AND SI MO FOR A WALK AT COPACABANA FORTRESS

It was a busy Friday, ending an infernal week ... It was as if for a month my world had become a washing machine. That day it should not be possible to meet Si Fu and Si Mo, but the strength of the relationship led me to make a series of adjustments to be with both of them on Si Fu's invitation. For while we waited for Si Gung Leo Imamura to arrive in Rio de Janeiro, Si Mo would take Si Fu to visit Copacabana Fortress.
I am not sure how many hours we sat on this bench watching the sea. Among so many things we talked about, we evaluated the performances of different Stand-Up Paddle practitioners who practiced this sport in front of us. Si Fu also asked me to explain why I like the character "Rambo" so much, and after watching with me an episode of my Youtube show "Kung Fu Culture", made some considerations.

Throughout my life, many people in my circles of friends have not understood, or questioned, or placed me against the wall. Because of my dedication to the "Si Fu-To Dai" relationship. Well, I believe that you who are reading, may also wonder from time to time, what a walking tour at Copacabana Fortress can help you in technical terms for example ...
To continue answering this question, I want to share my insight into the work of Professor Peimin Ni of Hawaii's Grand Valley University.

grande repercussão quando escreveu o artigo “Kung Fu for Philosophers” no New York Times.

My interest in his research came from the discovery of his work by my Si Gung Leo Imamura. For his view of the Chinese classics as works that are part of what he calls the Kung Fu Instruction aroused Si Gung´s curiosity.
Although this approach is not the only one (authors such as François Jullien put forward a similar proposal) I found it interesting to present Doctor Ni's vision, because his work gained great repercussion when he wrote the article “Kung Fu for Philosophers” in the New York Times.
According to Professor Peimin Ni, during the Song and Ming Dynasties of China, the term "kung fu" was widely used by Confucian, Taoist, and Buddhist as the art of living life in general, and they all considered their teachings to be different schools of Kung Fu.
(Si Fu e Si Mo, escolhendo a refeição no Menu)
(Si Fu and Si Mo, choosing what they gonna eat from the Menu)

Thus, the essence of Kung Fu can be found in various arts and guidelines on how to cultivate the person and their life. This may be Dr. Ni's emphasis on the term "Kung Fu." Since, in his research, the following uses are listed for this notion:
(1) efforts expended on something,
(2) Appropriate ways of making efforts (employing time) or particular instructions on how to make efforts, this is also the sense in which we can speak of kung fu as an art form,
(3) incorporation of the skills resulting from these efforts, and
(4) the purposes of the skills achieved.
For him, kung fu allows one to perceive the union of man with action in a way that human action is not treated merely as a result of rational choices or technical procedures, but as a result of human cultivation. He called this knowledge "Kung Fu Perspective".

Like my Si Fu for over twenty five years, he has "Kung Fu Life" as a means of access to the Ving Tsun System. He sums up this whole concept in one sentence: "Thiago, life can be simple."

THREE NEW DISCIPLES IN MOY FAT LEI FAMILY.

(Uau! Já estamos na quarta cerimônia de discipulado
da Família Moy Fat Lei!Passa rápido, certo?)

(Wow! We are already at the fourth discipleship ceremony
of the Moy Fat Lei Family! )

Si Fu e Si Mo gentilmente aceitaram comparecer  a IV Cerimônia de Discipulado da minha Família Kung Fu. Naquela manhã, em nossa Casa-Kung Fu, três novos membros vitalícios seriam aceitos na Família Moy Fat Lei: Thalles Cunha, Wellington Souza e Veronica Paiva.

Si Fu and Si Mo kindly agreed to attend the IV Discipleship Ceremony of my Kung Fu Family. That morning at our Kung Fu House, three new special students(Disciples) would be accepted into the Moy Fat Lei Family: Thalles Cunha, Wellington Souza, and Veronica Paiva.
(Quem é o "hardest worker in the room"?)
(Who is "the hardest worker in the room"?)

In order for the Ceremony to be held, there was a pre-event meeting prior to it. In it, coordinated by disciple number 3 Keith Markus, all the necessary points were raised so that within a week everything could happen.
(Matheus e Rafa limpando o Mo Gun após a obra)
(Matheus and Rafa cleaning up Mo Gun after work)

A minor overhaul was required on our Mo Gun. Members who were not directly linked to the Ceremony but who are part of the Family like Rafa (in the right) participated in this process. Matheus (in the left) who was Gaai Siu Yan (Introducer) for Wellington Souza, was one of the responsables of this reform.

(Thiago, until then a practitioner of the Fundamental Program,

In that kind of moment that is the reform of a Mo Gun. It is very common to introduce new leaders and practitioners that make a lot of difference. Thiago ( photo) was one of those practitioners who stood out during the reform, and was thus invited to be admitted to the Kung Fu Family.
O clima estava bem leve naquela manhã de Sábado. Havia deixado todos cuidando do Mo Gun e fui buscar Si Fu e Si Mo.

The ambience was very light that Saturday morning. I had left everyone taking care of the Mo Gun and went to get Si Fu and Si Mo. When we arrived, we waited for a moment at the reception / office while the last details of the Ceremony were prepared.

Thalles Cunha was the first to be presented that morning to perform the "Baai Si" by his presenter Keith Markus (photo). Thalles who is a member of the Rio de Janeiro State Military Fire Department as well as his "Gaai Siu Yan". He was very moved during his presentation.
Thalles and his wife, who was also present, were about to have the birth of their first daughter, the day after the Ceremony.

Si Fu and Si Mo brightened the Ceremony at every moment, not only for their presence, but especially for their assertive and personalized words. To the point of seeming to have known the new disciples for a long time.

Each disciple who arrives is a different story that begins to be written from there. Accepting to drink tea is a very big responsibility. You are dealing with someone's dreams and hopes. So this tea that you drink when you accept a disciple seems to have a different flavor.

After Thalles, it was Wellington Souza's turn to be introduced by Matheus. He began to practice very recently and in a very determined way, he knew how to take advantage of the moment of the Moy Fat Lei Family and to insert himself in it and in the Si Fu-To Dai relationship very sincerely and intensely.

The last person to perform the Ceremony that morning was Veronica Paiva. She is Wellington's wife and was the one who found the MYVT Meier School on Google. Gradually, she found her own space in the Moy Fat Lei Family and in the "Si Fu-To Dai" relationship, and left her own mark.
Speaking of "mark," one of Veronica's trademarks, is the emotion with which she expresses her happiness in being part of the Kung Fu Family.

The presence of Si Fu in my Family Ceremonies is very special indeed. The Kung Fu Houses of the Families we lead are located in different areas of the city of Rio. At rush hour, this distance can be expressed within 2 hours. So, in a way, having Si Fu gently crossing the city , signing the work that is being done with his presence is very special. Of course, this extends to Si Mo.
(Photo with Si Fu , Si Mo and the new disciples)

In the end, already driving Si Fu and Si Mo home, Si Fu said he felt "... The Family's energy is lighter ...". I asked him what he meant and he just repeated that he felt that. I was thinking a lot about it, and was pleased with that statement.
Over the years as a professional, I realize that when one faces with some challenge in conducting work related to Ving Tsun and its transmission. We tend to resort to something familiar to us. Perhaps that is why if you are good with words, when you teachs, you talk so much. On the other hand, if you have a mastery of technique, you may not realize that what is easy for you may not be for the other, and a little didacticism would not hurt.
In my case, I use protocol a lot, formality, etc ... present in things. This may have been too heavy at the beginning of the Family.

I close with this image, and with reference to Si Fu's speech: "Life can be easy."
