Grandmaster Leo’s Official Visit from a Kung Fu Perspective [从功夫视角看Leo Imamura 师公的正式访问]

A chamada “Visita Oficial” ocorre quando a liderança do Moy Yat Ving Tsun Safeguard Group, com a presença do Grão-Mestre Leo Imamura, se dispõe, durante determinado número de dias, a acompanhar a programação proposta, permanecendo sempre atenta às necessidades do Polo de Acesso. Portanto, não se trata necessariamente de uma pessoa visitando outras, mas de uma disposição da liderança para acompanhar, de maneira próxima, a realidade e as demandas daquela unidade.

A Visita Oficial da Liderança do Moy Yat Ving Tsun Safeguard Group concorre para que os membros dos Polos de Acesso pertencentes a essa designação de descendentes do Patriarca Moy Yat possam prover a Vida Kung Fu, propiciando oportunidades para ativar propensões que lhes permitam refletir sobre sua importância.

Esse instrumento estratégico representa uma inovação proporcionada pelo Patriarca Moy Yat a partir de sua experiência com o Patriarca Ip Man, na qual a programação da visita passa a assumir características de um sistema de variação. Na ocasião da Visita Oficial aos Polos de Acesso Moy Mei Si, dirigido pelo Mestre Sênior Paulo Camiz, e Morumbi, dirigido pelo Mestre Sênior Herbert de Morais, o tema proposto foi Transmissão Capacitadora.

The so-called “Official Visit” takes place when the leadership of the Moy Yat Ving Tsun Safeguard Group, with Grandmaster Leo Imamura present, makes itself available over a given number of days to accompany the proposed programme, while remaining attentive to the needs of the Access Hub. It is therefore not necessarily a matter of one person visiting others, but rather of the leadership making itself available to closely accompany the reality and needs of that particular unit.

The Official Visit of the Moy Yat Ving Tsun Safeguard Group Leadership contributes to enabling members of the Access Hub belonging to this designation of descendants of Patriarch Moy Yat to provide Kung Fu Life, creating opportunities to activate propensities that allow them to reflect upon its importance.

This strategic instrument represents an innovation introduced by Patriarch Moy Yat, based on his experience with Patriarch Ip Man, whereby the programme of the visit takes on the characteristics of a system of variation. On the occasion of the Official Visit to the Moy Mei Si Access Hub, led by Senior Master Paulo Camiz, and the Morumbi Access Centre, led by Senior Master Herbert de Morais, the proposed theme was Enabling Transmission.

A Visita Oficial, naquela noite de sexta-feira, era mais especial do que o normal para mim porque, pela primeira vez em muito tempo, eu poderia estar com pessoas de quem gosto e que admiro e simplesmente apreciar os acontecimentos. Algumas coisas ainda me surpreendem, e uma delas é a disposição do Grão-Mestre Leo Imamura para deixar que as coisas aconteçam. Era possível perceber, graças a um trabalho conjunto entre ele e as lideranças daqueles Polos de Acesso, a disposição de permitir que se revelasse o quanto havia sido efetivamente trabalhado no chamado “pré-evento”, ou não. As dificuldades surgem espontaneamente, e situações aparentemente simples são amplificadas pela lente da Perspectiva Kung Fu, permitindo que o praticante viva a experiência em profundidade.

O pré-evento nunca foi simplesmente uma divisão de tarefas destinada a minimizar erros a partir do óbvio: “Você, que tem carro, pode buscar o Si Gung 師公 (shī gōng 师公)? Pode levá-lo ao hotel? Pode levar fulano ao ponto A? Depois, consegue pegar a televisão e levá-la para o auditório? Opa, estamos encerrando à 1h da manhã. Amanhã, você consegue buscar o Si Gung 師公 (shī gōng 师公) às 6h30? Ah! Antes, consegue passar para me buscar?”. Me lembro bem de quando minha Família, dentro dessa mesma lógica, propôs algo parecido, não por má intenção, mas por falta de percepção. Era a primeira Visita Oficial desde que havíamos ingressado formalmente no Programa de Salvaguarda. Naquela ocasião, o Si Gung 師公 (shī gōng 师公) não estava preocupado com o carro que iria buscá-lo, com o conforto que teria ou mesmo se tudo daria certo ou não. Ele provocou o grupo a prestar atenção à quantidade excessiva de atividades e, sobretudo, à sobrecarga que recaía sobre meu discípulo Vitor Sá, que, naquela ocasião, era quem estava de carro.

Da mesma forma, naquela noite, com o evento já iniciado, o Si Gung 師公 (shī gōng 师公) não demonstrava qualquer pretensão de simplesmente fazer com que “tudo desse certo”. Isso não significa que o resultado não fosse importante. Sua preocupação estava em perceber se os membros dos Polos de Acesso estavam atentos ao que estava acontecendo e a como pretendiam realizar os ajustes necessários diante daquilo que surgia, por exemplo. Nesse sentido, quanto menor o preparo, maior seria a necessidade de ajuste.

The Official Visit, on that Friday evening, felt more special than usual to me because, for the first time in a long while, I could simply be with people I like and admire and appreciate what was unfolding. Some things still surprise me, and one of them is Grandmaster Leo Imamura’s willingness to let things happen. Through the work carried out jointly by him and the leadership of those Access Hubs, it was possible to see a deliberate willingness to allow the extent to which the so-called “pre-event” had actually been worked on, or not, to reveal itself. Difficulties arise spontaneously, and seemingly simple situations are magnified through the lens of the Kung Fu 功夫 (gōngfu 功夫) Perspective, allowing the practitioner to experience the process in greater depth.

The pre-event was never simply a matter of dividing up tasks in order to minimise obvious mistakes: “You have a car, can you pick up the Si Gung 師公 (shī gōng 师公)? Can you take him to the hotel? Can you take so-and-so to point A? Afterwards, can you collect the television and take it to the auditorium? Oh, we’re finishing at 1 a.m. Tomorrow, can you pick up the Si Gung 師公 (shī gōng 师公) at 6.30 a.m.? Ah! Before that, can you come and pick me up?” I remember very well when my own Family, following that same logic, proposed something similar, not out of bad intentions, but because we lacked awareness. It was the first Official Visit since we had formally joined the Safeguard Programme. On that occasion, the Si Gung 師公 (shī gōng 师公) was not concerned about which car would pick him up, how comfortable he would be, or even whether everything would go according to plan. Instead, he prompted the group to pay attention to the excessive number of activities and, above all, to the burden being placed on my disciple Vitor Sá, who, at the time, was the one with a car.

Likewise, that evening, with the event already under way, the Si Gung 師公 (shī gōng 师公) showed no intention of simply ensuring that “everything went right”. That does not mean that the outcome was unimportant. His concern was whether the members of the Access Hubs were aware of what was happening and how they intended to make the necessary adjustments in response to whatever emerged, for example. In that sense, the less preparation there had been, the greater the need for adjustment would be.

Odair é aluno do Mestre Sênior Herbert, enquanto Fernando e Ortega são alunos do Mestre Sênior Paulo. Dessa forma, tratava-se de uma Visita Oficial entre Polos de Acesso ou, se podemos dizer assim, uma Visita Oficial “interpolos”.

A Visita Oficial começou com a exibição de trechos do filme Kung Fu Panda (2008), que, pelo que entendi, o Si Gung 師公 (shī gōng 师公) considera um dos melhores filmes sobre Kung Fu 功夫 (gōngfu 功夫). De fato, sua análise foi muito especial e inspirou a todos. Desde o primeiro momento, o Si Gung 師公 (shī gōng 师公) trouxe à tona a importância do “campo transmissivo”. O Grão-Mestre Leo Imamura comenta: “...Por isso, dizer que ‘o Ving Tsun 詠春 (Yǒng Chūn 咏春) é um campo transmissivo’ é afirmar algo muito simples e muito exigente: a tradição continua viva não porque alguém a declara, mas porque alguém se torna capaz de habitá-la...”

Por meio de provocações sutis, relacionando aquilo que aparecia no filme ao que havia ocorrido durante a preparação daquele momento, o Grão-Mestre Leo conduzia a atenção dos membros para dentro da Dimensão Kung Fu 功夫 (gōngfu 功夫). Assim, a exibição do filme se desdobrava em várias camadas que iam muito além do entretenimento ou de um momento agradável entre pessoas queridas. Se, por um lado, havia nuances no roteiro que os presentes passavam a apreciar a partir dessas provocações, por outro, eles também começavam a perceber que estavam, naquele exato momento, vivendo o próprio processo sobre o qual refletiam. E aquilo era apenas o início do primeiro dia.

Odair is a student of Senior Master Herbert, while Fernando and Ortega are students of Senior Master Paulo. In this sense, it was an Official Visit involving two Access Hubs or, if we may call it that, an “inter-hub” Official Visit.

The Official Visit began with the screening of excerpts from Kung Fu Panda (2008), which, from what I understood, the Si Gung 師公 (shī gōng 师公) considers one of the best films about Kung Fu 功夫 (gōngfu 功夫). His analysis was indeed very special and inspired everyone present. From the very beginning, the Si Gung 師公 (shī gōng 师公) brought to the fore the importance of the “transmissive field”. Grandmaster Leo Imamura comments: “...For this reason, to say that ‘Ving Tsun 詠春 (Yǒng Chūn 咏春) is a transmissive field’ is to state something both very simple and very demanding: the tradition remains alive not because someone declares it so, but because someone becomes capable of inhabiting it...”

Through subtle provocations, connecting what was unfolding in the film with what had taken place during the preparation for that moment, Grandmaster Leo drew the members’ attention into the Kung Fu 功夫 (gōngfu 功夫) Dimension. In this way, the screening of the film unfolded into several layers that went far beyond entertainment or simply spending an enjoyable evening with people we care about. On the one hand, there were nuances in the story that those present began to appreciate through these provocations; on the other, they also began to realise that, at that very moment, they were themselves living the process upon which they were reflecting. And that was only the beginning of the first day.

Ao final, tivemos um momento para permanecer à mesa, compartilhando pizzas incríveis. Para mim, foi importante refletir, naquela noite, sobre como o preparo, ou seja, o pré-evento, cria determinadas condições. A realidade, porém, introduz variações, e a maneira como as pessoas respondem a essas variações revela aquilo que efetivamente foi desenvolvido. Não é possível escrever um manual que antecipe cada acontecimento de uma Visita Oficial. Se isso fosse possível, bastaria seguir o procedimento. Quando surge aquilo que não estava previsto, porém, torna-se necessário regular a ação enquanto a situação acontece. Há, portanto, uma distinção que considero particularmente interessante: a preparação não existe para eliminar a necessidade de ajuste; ela deveria aumentar a qualidade do ajuste quando ele se torna necessário.

O exemplo envolvendo Vitor Sá desmonta a lógica de simplesmente cumprir tarefas. O Si Gung 師公 (shī gōng 师公) não estava avaliando apenas se haveria um carro disponível. Ele percebia o que aquela organização estava produzindo nas pessoas, especialmente a sobrecarga concentrada sobre um único membro. Isso muda completamente a unidade de análise. O iniciante olha para a tarefa e pergunta: “O Si Gung 師公 (shī gōng 师公) chegou ao hotel?” Uma Perspectiva Kung Fu 功夫 (gōngfu 功夫), porém, começa a formular outra pergunta: “O que precisou acontecer entre essas pessoas para que o Si Gung 師公 (shī gōng 师公) chegasse ao hotel?” Quem percebeu? Quem se antecipou? Quem ficou sobrecarregado? Quem permaneceu passivo? Quem conseguiu se ajustar? Quem precisou receber ordens? Quem foi capaz de enxergar o todo?

Esse para mim, é um dos potenciais da Visita Oficial enquanto instrumento do Programa.

 At the end, we had some time to remain around the table, sharing some incredible pizzas. For me, it was important that evening to reflect on how preparation, that is, the pre-event, creates certain conditions. Reality, however, introduces variations, and the way people respond to those variations reveals what has actually been developed. It is impossible to write a manual that anticipates every occurrence during an Official Visit. If that were possible, all one would need to do would be to follow the procedure. When something unforeseen arises, however, it becomes necessary to regulate the action while the situation is unfolding. There is, therefore, a distinction that I find particularly interesting: preparation does not exist to eliminate the need for adjustment; it should increase the quality of the adjustment when adjustment becomes necessary.

The example involving Vitor Sá challenges the logic of simply completing tasks. The Si Gung 師公 (shī gōng 师公) was not merely assessing whether a car would be available. He was observing what that organisation was producing in the people involved, particularly the burden being concentrated on a single member. This completely changes the unit of analysis. A beginner looks at the task and asks: “Did the Si Gung 師公 (shī gōng 师公) get to the hotel?” A Kung Fu 功夫 (gōngfu 功夫) Perspective, however, begins to ask a different question: “What needed to happen amongst these people for the Si Gung 師公 (shī gōng 师公) to get to the hotel?” Who noticed what was happening? Who anticipated what was needed? Who became overloaded? Who remained passive? Who was able to adjust? Who needed to be given instructions? Who was capable of seeing the whole picture?

For me, this is one of the potentials of the Official Visit as an instrument of the Programme.
