JACKIE CHAN 66th BIRTHDAY : HOW HE CHANGED THE GAME FOREVER

Dentre esses jovens, estava eu.

On the 7th of April, Chinese cinema legend Jackie Chan turned 66 years old. And many of the younger practitioners who sought out the martial arts, did so because they had contact with some of Jackie Chan's cinematographic works.
Among these young people, I was there. After watching the movie "Drunken Master 2" (1994), my passion for Tae Kwon Do started to give space to Chinese martial arts. So, I started a tireless search for video stores in the Rocha Miranda neighborhood(north zzone of Rio), looking for "lost" films starring Jackie Chan ...

Below, the trailer for "Drunken Master 2":

This film was important for Hong Kong cinema, not only because of the care with regard to the choreography. Some of those coregraphies took up to four months to complete. But what was really remarkable about this film was the historic meeting between Jackie Chan and Lau Kar Leung ...
(Jackie Chan on the set of "Drunken Master 2" with the legend Lau Kar Leung)

When Bruce Lee passed away, Hong Kong cinema fell into decline with the martial arts genre, as producers were looking for a replacement at any cost. After several unsuccessful attempts, Jackie Chan gives up his career and moves to Australia, where he starts doing dishwashing and other jobs to survive.

Parallel to this, Lau Kar Leung (28 July 1934 - 25 June 2013), who is a Si Fu of Hung Ga Style and an experienced choreographer of martial arts films, would be the person responsible for a historic turn in Hong Kong cinema: He idealized and directed the classic "The Spiritual Boxer (1975)", which for the first time combined the genre of martial arts with comedy.

This new genre, mixing comedy and martial arts, allowed cinema genius Yuen Woo Ping (pictured left) to get the best out of Jackie Chan. No longer trying to turn him into a new Bruce Lee, but by joining him with his own father the actor Simon Yuen (center). Yuen Woo Ping launched Jackie Chan in the genre that would enshrine him across the planet as one of the greatest action heroes of all time.
Below is the trailer for this film that changed the history of Hong Kong cinema and Jackie Chan's life:

Jackie Chan achieved international recognition with the first "Drunken Master" in the 70s, in which he presents in a simply genius way, a martial art that was configured from the moment that its practitioner was drunk. Once again Yuen Woo Ping (creator of the project), brought Jackie Chan and his father Simon Yuen playing the role of Master and Disciple, in addition to other actors.

In the early 1980s, Jackie Chan skyrocketed in the Asian market, but was unable to achieve a projection that would take him to Hollywood. He even made some unsuccessful attempts, but the producers' restrictions on what he could and could not do on the scene, or the fact of fitting him into a stereotype, hampered that first attempt. It was then that Jackie Chan produced and acted what is considered the greatest action film in the history of world cinema and the most plagiarized film according to the Guinness Book: "Police Story".

The film was given a standing ovation at the Cannes festival and even then, some people wondered if Jackie Chan only knew how to make action films. It was then that he produced a highly awarded film a few years later, mainly for the brilliant direction of Jackie Chan with a series of sequential plans and for the wonderful work of photography of the film: "Miracles"!

The film featured some renowned Hong Kong film actors, but the talented Anita Mui (Hong Kong, October 10, 1963 - Hong Kong, December 30, 2003), who was a talented singer and actress and who made some partnerships with Jackie Chan and who unfortunately passed away very early. In the picture above, she appears in navy blue coat alongside Jackie Chan.

The 66 years old, Jackie Chan changed the history of cinema in his country, made the long-awaited worldwide success starring the "Rush Hour" franchise (Rush Hour, 1998) and inspires martial arts practitioners and enthusiasts around the world.

The message that remains is that of the constant search for excellence, that of perseverance in search of a dream, and that we will never know how much our actions can forever mark the lives of people we don't even know!

THE SECOND BRAIN OF THE VING TSUN PRACTITIONER.

(With Si Fu in 2015 in a shopping mall in Rio. Its decoration looks like that of the 1982 film TRON)

Existe um conceito na relação Si Fu- To Dai (Si-To), o qual usamos o ideograma (守) para nos referirmos à ele.
Segundo meu Si Gung Leo Imamura, toda a relação começa com ""Sau"(守).

There is a concept in the "Si Fu- To Dai (Si-To) relationship", which we use the ideogram (守) to refer to it. The transliteration we use to pronounce it is "Sao" (守).
Looking in good dictionaries, you can find different translations, but the one that came to me at first was "To accept".
According to my Si Gung Leo Imamura, the whole relationship starts with " Sao "(守). After all, in the times we are living in, some people (mainly through social media) seem to have developed an addiction to disagree." To accept "what it is proposed by the other, it is very difficult nowadays, because we are in opposition and not in a process that François Jullien called "Transindividuality".
(Si Fu just a few days after being titled Master, in one of the schools he directed)

Throughout his career of more than twenty-five years, Si Fu has dealt with many situations in which from younger Kung Fu brothers to his own disciples. They brought personal and private themes to him, in search of his strategic and assertive vision on the subject. So many years later, Si Fu said to me: "... Sometimes I heard the person's problem, and my life was upside down ... And I was there, right in front of the person hearing his problem, and he or she without knowing anything ... "- Si Fu told this with a mischievous smile and with his arms crossed, as if simulating his listening in these opportunities. On those occasions Si Fu narrows his eyes, cross his arms, squeezes his mouth and keeps nodding while smiling (laughs).
"Sometimes I was jealous of the person's problem, you know?" - He said more seriously- "I wish I had this problem". - He ended by implying that he had heard problems from people who were looking for a solution when he himself was experiencing much bigger problems.
A relação "Si Fu-To Dai" não é linear, ela é cíclica.

The "Si Fu-To Dai" relationship is not linear, it is cyclical. That is why, in different ways, the importance of working on the concept of "Sau" (守) [To accept], has been fundamental over the years. Because in more than twenty years of relationship, I did not always get along with Si Fu, and sometimes using this concept that since 2016 Si Fu started to call "To adhere" (Sau 守), it was very difficult. - "A disciple going away and somehow not putting it on the Si Fu account or leaving hurt saying things, often unfair, is nothing new. That's what always happens ..." - He would have said to me on one occasion .
(Si Fu caminha pela Vila Gu Lo, onde nasceu e morreu Leung Jaan, Si Gung de Ip Man)
(Si Fu walks through Gu Lo Village, where Leung Jaan was born and died, Si Gung of Ip Man)

Então recentemente pude conversar on line com Si Fu e tinham vários tópicos a serem abordados.

So recently I was able to chat online with Si Fu and there were several topics to be covered. He asked me to start talking until he interrupted me. He pointed out the standard way in which I build my thinking, and spoke of the importance of "letting his way of thinking cross trough mine". - "... It is not that you are going to let go of your way of thinking to assume my way of thinking. You are going to overlap our thoughts. And so, you get one more way of thinking ..."

Si Fu then to illustrate what he was saying, he told me a story that would mark me: "... Once when I was a teenager, I was in love with a girl. I told her I was happy because I liked her, but she said she didn't like me ... "- Si Fu laughed and went on with his story-" I said: Wow, that's too bad. I like you and I'm happy, you don't like me and you are in the same way as before. "
Through this simple story, Si Fu showed me the importance of "letting yourself be crossed by the way of thinking  of the other", it can bring us benefits in our daily lives. - "... Because I liked her, I dressed up better, put some perfum, etc ... So it was good for me. Even if she didn't like me. But she stayed the same ..."

So, we can say that to live our daily lives in a more strategic and less passionate way, we can use our "second brain": The brain of our Si Fu that accompanies us wherever we are. In this way, by looking outside ourselves and thinking about our own thinking, we become more intelligent. In addition, we can identify patterns and points to improve in ourselves. This should be one of the advantages of someone from the Ving Tsun Clan ... But it all starts with the constant ability to "join" (Sau 守).

HOW VING TSUN CAN HELP AGAINST BULLYING IN SCHOOLS

For those who don't know, on May 7th, it was released by AMAZON, a children's picture book based on the 1984 "Karate Kid" classic movie. The illustration above is from this book by Kim Smith.
Because I´m are following the new series that follows to the classic from 1984, I got in touch with this image promoting the book. Interestingly , the expression of the character Daniel LaRusso in the illustration, realizing surrounded by members of the Karate school called "Cobra Kai", touched me deeply.
I spent a few minutes looking at this scene, and a movie came to mind: Not the "Karate Kid" movie, but the movie of my own life. And I believe that the lives of many other young people who are currently being bullied every year.

Daniel LaRusso's expression in almost every image released by the book is utterly helpless. Since in the original story of the movie, he is the new boy of a school, and is bully by Johnny Lawrence and his fellow Karate practitioners.
(Picture of me taken in 1997, just moments before going to another
tough day at school at the height of the problems I was facing in my class.)

In 1997 it was difficult when Sunday came, because I knew that the next day I would need to be in that classroom and somehow try to "survive." It's hard to explain why bullying starts. It may be because of a blunder you made in public that marks you throughout the school year, or some physical trait (which is more common). This feature turns out to be a serious problem for the student.

(The countenance I carried throughout 1997 and part of 1998)

Maybe Daniel LaRusso's expression in the illustrations touched me so much, because it was exactly the expression he carried with me all year: An expression of helplessness.
For some reason I can't explain, I never considered commenting with my parents what was going on, and I endured those verbal and physical aggressions all year long. This ended up causing me some health problems. For in addition to living in fear, the person who suffers bullying lives in isolation, since no one wants to associate with this student, since they can become a target too. And some random people in the classroom will even chorus the bullies, just so that these bullies don't come to them at some point.

In the book's illustrations, Daniel LaRusso's expression begins to change when through a playful and experiential process with Mr. Miyagi, who becomes his Karate Master. He is beginning to gain more and more confidence because he no longer feels so alone and the very learning of a martial art coupled with his mentor relationship gives him the courage to live a better life.

I only met my Master Julio Camacho (photo) in 1999 at the age of 15. From then on I was never approached by any bully no more. Whether at school or on the street, everyone started to treat me with respect . Something about me changed every day thanks to the learning of this Chinese martial art called Ving Tsun that I learned from my Master.
Also through an experiential process that we call "Kung Fu Life," my Master teaches me over twenty years how to look at everyday issues from a strategic perspective, so common to a Kung Fu practitioner.

The book ends just like the 1984 movie: With Daniel-San facing his former bully Johnny Lawrence in the All Valley Karate Championship Final. Daniel eventually becomes champion, and earns the respect of the other boys.
(My Master and I when I got a Chinese cloth from a practice partner on my birthday in 2006)

Unlike a movie like "Karate Kid", we don't solve all our punch and kick issues. Ving Tsun, considered by many to be "The martial art of everyday fighting," speaks of learning the art of fighting without a fight. For we understand that our greatest opponents in life will be situations that we cannot "hit"
We can think about what kind of information we are giving, whether we enter a classroom on the first day of the year or our new job. Which will generate in those present the thought that they may disrespect us. Or maybe when we get robbed: Why did the bad guy choose us?

(Already as a professional and Master of Ving Tsun in 2017, I speak in public observed by my Master Julio Camacho and his Master Leo Imamura)

In 2007 I started to become a professional of this  martial art, and I try to create scenarios where people who also need to gain the confidence to resignify themselves as human beings can develop. Just as my Master did and still does for me.
I believe in the fundamental role that martial arts and living with it have played in my life from these extremely heavy episodes of bullying.
And today that Ving Tsun Kung Fu has become a dream I live daily, I quote my Master's famous quote: "You will never know why you devoted so much of your life to a dream until the day this dream saves your life."

ARTE MARCIAL CHINESA AUXILIA PAIS,ALUNOS, PROFESSORES E ESCOLAS.

(O Grão-Mestre de Ving Tsun Kung Fu,Sr. Leo Imamura,

MYVT MEIER RUNNIN' WILD AGAIN

O livro "My Life Outside the Ring" fora importado carinhosamente por este irmão Kung Fu.
What´cha gonna do when Hulk Hogan runs wild over you!" (risos)...

Things sometimes do not seem to go well. I remember losing count of how many times I watched all the Rocky Balboa movies that early in 2011 to get the motivation to move on in the loneliest moments. It used to work.
However, a book I earned as a gift from my Kung Fu brother Daniel de Caires, would mark me deeply that year. The official biography of one of my childhood heroes: Hulk Hogan, WWE icon.
The book "My Life Outside the Ring" had been affectionately imported by this Kung Fu brother. I read voraciously in a few days. And I was able to follow the incredible story of overcoming by this athlete.
Curiously, Hulk Hogan himself posted a picture of me (image above) in one of his old social networks, holding the book with the following caption: "Hulkamaniac from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: Thiago Pereira, 27 years old."

In the promotions of his fights, Hulk Hogan always said: " What´cha gonna do when Hulk Hogan runs wild over you!"" (laughs) ... I was so thrilled with the book that many of the titles of my posts on the brand-new Méier School that year,  were mostly like, "MYVT MEIER RUNNIN' WILD!"

(Prática de Quinta no Mo Gun provisório da Família Moy Fat Lei . Jul/18)
(Thursday´s practices at the former provisory Mo Gun of Moy Fat Lei Family. Jul/18)

Perhaps it was the non-auspicious number 4 on the door of that room, or who knows, everything else ... But that property, kindly offered for a modest amount by a friend, had so many structural and other problems of different nature that I simply I did not like staying there.
(Caroline Arhcanjo, leads a practice on Saturday while I was with my Si Fu)

Despite these problems, that was what we needed at that time because of the serious financial problem that the Moy Fat Lei Family passed in the first half of this year. It was a "strategic escape," to recover as we waited for another opportunity .
In that period, important leaders emerged as Cayo and Christiana. Others were strengthened, such as Caroline Archanjo and Luiz Grativol. And potential leaderships began to emerge, such as Matheus Alves and Gio Rodrigues.
(Jantares de Quinta dos Discípulos: Com meu discípulo Keith Markus)
(Thursday´s Disciples Dinner : With my disciple Keith Markus)

As that location was not welcoming, processes of "Kung Fu Life" outside the Mo Gun were enforced. It was then that the "weekly dinners of the disciples" appeared. In which, together with my disciples, We dined all Thursday night. In order to maintain minimal contact with the whole group.

I remember with emotion the day of delivery of the room: The light had already been cut by the owner, and all objects of the Moy Fat Lei Family fit in Vitor's car.
The Moy Fat Lei Family was homeless for the first time since its foundation, and for the second time in my career I was without a location. But somehow I knew that was the turning point.
I remember asking Cayo and Vitor to get rid of the wall used to expose our ancestral lineage and Si Taai Gung Moy Yat's picture. I thought to myself, "On the next Mo Gun, there will be a wall of its own. We will not need a plywood ever again!"

(A new adventure! Jaqueline and Cayo on the first
day of practice while we hadn´t a Mo Gun)

The first day I gave sessions on the premises of Jaqueline Tergolina's building, my disciple. It was on an incredible Saturday morning. We had already begun negotiations with the house in which it would be the new Mo Gun of the Moy Fat Lei Family two months later, but at that moment, it was still a question of perseverance.

Practices took place in two spaces throughout the week, depending on the availability of the condominium. One of them was a disabled skateboard ramp(PHOTO). During this period, Lee Pereira was admitted to the Moy Fat Lei Family, Cayo Cesar accessed the Intermediate Level "Cham Kiu" and Vitor Sá and Keith Markus formalized their access to the Advanced Level "Biu Ji".
(Meeting at Cayo´s house with the dear students : Luiz, Carol and Vitor)

What is most impressive is that with every adversity in negotiating with the real estate agent and the news that we would be staying for another one or two weeks at Jaqueline's condo, it seemed to bring the Family members even closer.
At that time, I used to always listen to a song suggested to me by my To Dai Luan Felipe in 2016 called "Sogni di Volare" by Christopher Tin. Today is one of my favorite songs.
Today, I only need to hear a few seconds of the song to be filled with all the certainty I had in that period of the direction I was taking.

I remember in one of the meetings of Schools of Moy Jo Lei Ou Clan in Barra da Tijuca, Si Fu's concern with the number of students wich were interrupting their practice. There were almost sixteen students who had withdrawn at that time.
I did not recognize myself as I reassured Si Fu with a smile on my face, that the image that I had clear in my mind was that of a sort of spiral spring. - "Si Fu, I'm sure we are taking momentum, it's going to be whoever has to stay for this new moment, the others will return later."

(Caroline finishing the cleaning of the frame
with the words: "Kung Fu House of Moy Fat Lei Family")

If we had not been through this financial difficulty, we would not need to rush out of the building on Medina Street. If the new building was not so inappropriate, the "Kung Fu Life" processes outside the Mo Gun would not be as amplified. If by chance our Kung Fu Family had not been to see the Ballet show that Sunday in August, we would not have seen this house.
And it was thanks to having passed through all these processes and many others that we had no doubt that the house was ours!

Therefore, I invite all members of the Grand Clan Moy Yat Sang and close friends of the "Mo Lam" to be with us next Saturday, October 27 at 7 pm, to join my Si Fu Julio Camacho, officially meet the new "Kung Fu House "of the Moy Fat Lei Family!

THE TWO NEW DISCIPLES OF MOY KE LO SI FAMILY

(Foto oficial da Cerimônia de Baai Si da Família Moy Ke Lo Si)
(Official photo of Moy Ke Lo Si Family´s Baai Si Ceremony)

As portas abertas prestes a fechar a qualquer momento. Aguardava minha To Dai Christiana.

The subway train that connected the Ocean Garden Station to the Cinelandia station was standing in front of me. The doors open about to close at any moment. My dear black suitcase I carried in Europe was there with me too. I waited for my To Dai Christiana. She had taken us in her car out of the Meier neighborhood. We were on time for my appointment: I had been honored to be invited to the Third Moy Ke Lo Si Family Discipleship Ceremony. I looked at the top of the stairs and no sign of Chris. She had been left behind when I stepped up. As She had not remembered the subway ticket, I passed and she stayed to buy hers. At that moment, I remembered the legendary adventure on the Barcelona trains with Si Fu and Claudio. Now there I was, on the other side of the story. I thought for half a second to go and leave Chris if the train left, but I thought it would be an over-expected experience for the Siu Nim Tau Domain. At that moment, I watched as Chris started down the stairs, and I reflected that I should adjust the experience to her moment in the Ving Tsun System. So, leaning against the wall of one of the carriages, we made a brief post-event of what had happened so far, and prepared for what would follow.
(With my To Dai Chris Chagas, at night in meeting event on the same day)

Estava atrasado , e decidido a chegar o quanto antes.

When we got off at the Cinelandia station, Chris was already able to follow me closer, and we walked steadily to the venue. We were late, and I was determined to get there as soon as possible.
(Thats me watching the Ke Lo Si Family Leaders doing the Ceremonial Procedures)

When we finally arrived, I realized that Si Suk Queiroz had delayed the start of the Ceremony in a few minutes because of my delay. And since they were all ready, the ceremonial procedures quickly began.
In fact, there is no form of an "Honorable Witness" formally speaking, according to our organization's procedures. But I noticed that there was a chair reserved for me, next to the "Sam Toi" (ancestral table).
A Si Fu usually says that his greatest asset is the Kung Fu Family, and about to sit there. After all the rushing to arrive, I tried to organize myself internally, to contribute dignity with to honor the position that was offered to me.

(Marcelo Azevedo, o primeiro a realizar o Baai Si naquela manhã.

(Marcelo Azevedo, the first to perform Baai Si that morning. He watches his Si Fu drinking the tea he offered, along with his Kung Fu brother Eduardo Esteves)

Dudu, Lamarão, Jorge, and so many other "Kung Fu Cousins" I like so much were there too. As always, they brought through their words, all the affection they have for each other. Moreover, these honest words demonstrate the close relationship that they hold with each other. Something really inspiring.
Azevedo, the first to offer tea to Si Suk Queiroz, remembered to thank not only his Si Fu for the opportunity, but also his Si Mo. The figure of his wife, who was present, was also remembered as a great incentive of his process.
Thus, the importance of these figures is recorded.

My dear Si Suk Mo Flavia Bambrilla, who is the wife of Si Suk Queiroz and Si Mo of the Moy Ke Lo Si Family. Watches carefully at the moment when Azevedo hands over the "Hung Baau" to his Si Fu, in thanksgiving for his tea.
A "Si Mo" does not necessarily need to be a practitioner to be respected. And, roughly in the case of our partners, as the wife of Azevedo. She would not need to either openly encourage or support her husband's trajectory.
François Jullien, in his book "Figures of Immanence" (Figures de L'immanence - Pour une lecture philosophique du Yi King, 1993), says: "... It is proper for a thought concerned with transcendence to seek to explore the other (that is to say, that in which the other is truly another and can be constituted in exteriority.) In contrast with this opening to the beyond, it is proper for a thought of immanence to seek to value, and to operate, all that exists of the same in the other and that allows its correlation ... "

At the "Baai Si" ceremony, the tea should also be offered to Si Mo if there is one, or the husband of a Si Fu. In case this figure is a woman. In the photo above, we see the moment that after offering tea to his Si Fu, Leo Macedo, flanked by his Kung Fu brother, the gentle Jorge Rocha. Watches his Si Mo drinking tea.
This act on the part of the leaders of a Kung Fu Family, symbolically explicit, the commitment assumed with the new disciple from then on, for the rest of life and beyond.
It may seem strange to understand this process at first if you are not from a Kung Fu Family. And because, in the face of a thought that is external to both our conceptual habits and our most common metaphysical actions, we need an assimilation by the acquisition of a custom that goes beyond mere understanding. (Jullien, François, 1997). Thus, it is clear the importance of the "Familiar" process to favor the favorable as "Kung Fu Life" as a means of access to the Ving Tsun System.

After the Ceremony, we went with Moy Ke Lo Si Family to a hotel for lunch. All in a very pleasant atmosphere. It even caught my attention when Si Suk Queiroz calmed Leo and his wife, asking them to let the children make noises throughout the Ceremony. He said that was great.
Me and Chris were just beginning our adventure ... "Chapter 1" had been breakfast at Méier and the race to get there in time. The "Chapter 2" was Ceremony of "Baai Si" ... And even before it ended, a new adventure began on the subway to the Copacabana School ... But this is a story for another day ...
Devido a excelência profissional destas duas pessoas. Sorte aos dois!

I would like to say that next Saturday we will have the titling of Si Suk Ricardo Queiroz to the "Senior Master" Class of MOy Yat Ving Tsun Martial Intelligence
. Together with him, at the same Ceremony, Master. Ursula Lima, also my Si Suk, will also be titled.
These are two very special titles for the Ving Tsun of Rio de Janeiro, not only for the Moy Yat Lineage, but as a whole. Due to the professional excellence of these two people. Luck to them!
