An unprecedented study of 'Baat Jaam Do' by GM Leo Imamura

In 1991 and 1992, I enjoyed it when the time of my Aunt Geny's or one of her children's birthdays arrived. This happened because we only got our first VCR at home in 1993, and up to that moment, these were my only opportunities to watch sequels of the films I liked but that brailian TV Channel GLOBO TV didn't broadcast. By a twist of fate, one of her sons was studying aviation, and because of that, at all the parties, I ended up watching 'TOP GUN ' [1986]. I liked 'TOP GUN ' so much that I wanted to wear my wool lapel jacket from the film all the time. In the movie, Tom Cruise's character is nicknamed 'Maverick.' Years later, I discovered that the word 'maverick' is an English word that refers to a person who is independent and tends to do things differently, often challenging established conventions...

I gathered with other Masters and postgraduates of Moy Yat Ving Tsun at the Moy Yat Institute in São Paulo for a very unique study involving the 'Baat Jaam Do.' On these occasions, you may find me holding a notebook. You might think you can remember everything, but the elucidations are very elaborate, and a misunderstood word or phrase can change the entire meaning of what was said. The group was highly diverse; looking around, I could see people at different stages, with different pursuits, but with a common spirit: that of making oneself available for the experience without fear of revealing their ignorance or poor understanding of any topic. I witnessed in practice what Si Gung has spoken of regarding 'embracing diversity' and how rich it can be for the Kung Fu Family. Even in such different moments, each person present was entirely committed to the whole. This, in itself, was truly moving to witness.

For me, the standout of this study was Master Felipe Soares [photo with glasses]. I met him when he was quite young and at different stages of his life. His consistency in his observations, along with a constant willingness and a lack of desire to be right or have the last word, makes anyone listening to him not feel inadequate, and all listen to him attentively. I witnessed this all the time and with many different people. Si Suk ended up assuming a leadership role during this gathering through silent acclamation.
On my part, lunch breaks were the most challenging moments for me. Typically, I had messed up a demonstration in the morning, and the challenge of dealing with the mistake seemed to want to undermine my confidence. Sometimes, I found myself gazing into nothingness in silence. In those moments, Si Suk Felipe would ask, 'Is everything alright?'
After lunch, I would walk to my disciple's apartment listening some music in my walkman or have a conversation with my Kung Fu brother, Roberto Viana. When I returned, I was in a lighter spirit to do better.

É necessário separar o autor do efeito." - Teria dito Si Gung Leo Imamura.

Si Gung led us to envision the transmission of 'Baat Jaam Do' in a way that deeply touched me. In fact, this was the reason I was there. Throughout my journey, I was very well guided, whether by my Si Fu or Si Suk Ursula, at different stages. Because of this, I am always reflecting on how much room for improvement still exists regarding transmission. When someone sets aside time to be with you, pays attention to you, sits with you for dinner or coffee at times when someone would typically be with their family after work, that needs to be respected.
Before, I used to think a lot about giving 100%, but after this study, I realized it's not a matter of what you want, but how much the person can receive. Nonetheless, a Si Fu also needs to have something to deliver. So, you could see Si Gung speaking with us at every moment, as adults responsible for a very serious task towards their descendants. Despite having known many of those present when they were still teenagers, like Si Suk Paulo Camiz, he made it clear to us the responsibility that the study involved. - 'In this Domain is where silent language reaches its peak. It is necessary to separate the author from the effect.' - Si Gung Leo Imamura would have said.

Sentado ali durante o jantar no final do último dia do evento, estava bastante emocionado.

The challenges of being a disciple and also a Si Fu seem to be many. You are there trying to balance the two roles all the time. However, as my Si Fu recently mentioned on my birthday, it is important to take care of the descendants who have chosen us as their 'Si Fu' for their Kung Fu journey, and that's why I have undertaken this challenge. If you're not a bit of a 'Maverick,' you can't make it.
Sitting there during the dinner at the end of the last day of the event, I was quite moved. Bonds were strengthened and created not based on what we wanted for ourselves, but on what we understood to be important for responsibly caring for the next generation.
The pizza seemed better than a regular pizza, and the hugs, instead of feeling like farewells, I could sense them as a silent 'see you soon'.

15 years of "Baat Jaam Do", what has changed?

Então eu me divertia: Geralmente eu pegava minha prova e perguntava diretamente para ele - ' ...Tirou quanto D?...'

In 1998, my family was in a better living condition, and my mother decided it was time to enroll me in an English course. I declined, after all, at the age of 14, being "trapped" in a course for two hours, twice a week, would disrupt my plans for leisure in the afternoon. My mother then simply enrolled me, and a week later, you could see me there, sitting on a bench in the courtyard of a renowned English course in Taquara, West Zone of Rio. As people arrived, I tried to intuit who would be in my class. Later that day, I felt proud to have correctly identified three people who would be my classmates. One of them was a young man whom I'll call D. He seemed to exhibit all the behavior of those students who sit in the front row, make sure to get everything right, and thrive on the good grades they achieve... I'm not sure if it's still the same, but in those days, there were several people like that.
As the weeks passed, I noticed two things: firstly, that I was doing well, and along with this student, we excelled in the class. The second thing was that even if I skipped class to play arcade games in Madureira neighborhood[North Zone], nothing happened. This was because the course seemed really easy, and they didn't count absences. Furthermore, I noticed that most of the time, even with so many absences, my grades were higher than D.'s, even though he always gave his best. This made him quite upset. It seemed that the tenser he became, the worse his performance on the next test. Meanwhile, I didn't even want to be there, and perhaps the way he saw me treating the course made him even more frustrated... So, I had fun: Usually, I would take my test and ask him directly - '...What did you score, D?...'

This year marks fifteen years since I accessed the "Baat Jaam Do" Domain. We call it a "Domain" because it's a kind of territory with its own logic. When I accessed the previous Domain, "Luk Dim Bun Gwan," my Si Fu [PHOTO above] told me and my Kung Fu brother, Vladimir, that if there was a Domain that almost made him give up, it would have been that one. As he didn't provide many details, I was left with anticipation. After all, it was hard to imagine my Si Fu contemplating giving up. I went through the "Luk Dim Bun Gwan" Domain, and nothing significant happened that made me consider giving up. In fact, it became my favorite study in the entire Ving Tsun system. However, in July 2008, I couldn't have imagined the hell I was entering with my access to the "Baat Jaam Do" Domain. Years later, after a lunch at Barra Garden Mall with my Si Gung and other Kung Fu brothers, my Si Gung would have said that because Ving Tsun System is composed of different natures, it's possible that you may identify more with a particular Domain and have more difficulties with others. I listened attentively to that, closer to the end of the table, with Carlos Antunes seated across from Si Gung. I'm not quite sure what he was thinking, but I thought about "Baat Jaam Do."

As facas vão junto onde você for.

My Si Fu recently spoke to me about how content he is with his life. He shared the pleasant feeling he experiences when lying down at the end of the day, with a smile. According to him, these days, he wouldn't trade his life for anyone else's. I was pleased to hear that, even though I didn't show any reaction while driving, and we were nearly reaching our destination.
The "Baat Jaam Do" Domain seems very demanding and unyielding for people like me. There is no pointo to practice more, demonstrating greater determination... It's as if you needed to become more intelligent to perceive something that, with "free hands" you overlooked through a rough patch. Or maybe because your younger Kung Fu brother was inattentive and didn't realize you were using brute force on him. At that moment, when you're alone, the knives can bring you down. You realize that your lack of attention to details created a ceiling that didn't just limit your own development but that of all those who were technically associated with you. Perhaps the best thing to do at that moment is simply not to touch the knives. If you have responsibilities towards the Family, you can't just disappear; thus, you simply set it aside and forget the matter.
But on that day in the car, Si Fu talked about the pleasant feeling of lying down with a clear conscience. And the same applies when you haven't fulfilled your part in your Kung Fu journey. The knives go with you wherever you go. And when your heart asks, what excuse do you give?

In the world of Kung Fu, only those who choose to stay remain. There are no enrollments, absences, exams, higher or lower grades. There is only you and your conscience regarding what you have achieved with what you had access to. And in this year, marking 15 years since I accessed this Domain, I realize that I was the same age when this story of the English course took place. I've been reflecting deeply on what I've developed through the use of knives. This is because today, this understanding influences the journey of my own students.
The conclusion I arrive at is that we should let go of using patches, of only understanding superficially, and not just trying but delving deep with all our heart. One day, someone will rely on us, just as we rely on our Si Fu, and delivering 100% to that person won't be enough anymore. Those 100% will need to be worthy of being delivered. Otherwise, it's a no-go

The magical hot dog with GM Leo Imamura

Porém, não me culpei. Porém, me sentindo um tanto derrotado olhando a sala vazia, permiti-me ter aqueles devaneios.

When I began practicing Ving Tsun, shortly thereafter, it seemed like the entire School was focused on management aspects. In those times, the Ving Tsun System itself was exotic enough for a young lad of 15...16 years old like me. And seeing so much energy being devoted to management improvement and professionalization made it all incomprehensible to me. Not having stopped practicing due to demotivation was partly thanks to my Si Fu and partly a miracle. Many years later, I found myself leaning against a wall in one of the car parks at the first headquarters of the Méier School in wild Meier neighborhood, watching the cars pass in slow motion on Medina Street. 'Almost overnight,' nearly all the students abandoned the practice, and only six remained. Since I knew so little about how to price the work I offered, the math didn't add up. I would talk to Si Fu on the phone, and at the end of the conversation, I realized something very important: I was still playing at being a School Director, even a year after renting the room. I used my free time in Mo Gun to read books that didn't contribute to the work I was doing, just to pass the time until the few evening students arrived. When in fact, I wasn't considering preparing myself better for when a new cycle began. However, my 'play' didn't stop there in 2012. Despite dedicating myself more to studies and making it a point to attend all possible seminars in the following years, the number of students rose steeply, but my lack of understanding of how to manage the school remained the same. Consequently, almost like an act of philanthropy, allowing practitioners to attend classes without making any kind of payment in the face of the first difficulty, in 2017, we were forced to close the doors on Medina Street. While watching an episode of a series with my disciple Cayo on my notebook, as we rested with the last items ready to be removed and the room handed over, I remembered the times of high adventures when I started and all the focus on management. However, I did not blame myself. I was too young to understand the value of that process, and nothing guaranteed that I would be able to contribute anything if I were older. However, feeling somewhat defeated as I looked at the empty room, I allowed myself those reveries.

I found myself seated in a square in Brasilia, having the famous 'lil' church's hot dog' with Si Gung, Si Suk Vede, and two of my disciples. I vividly remember when I ate a street hot dog for the first time in front of the Guaraci Cinema in the Rocha Miranda neighborhood. I came home, telling my grandfather how incredible it was to fit so much into a hot dog... I've also had many snacks with my Si Fu in amazing places, like when I took him for a  north zone folk drink at the Madureira Market in North Zone of Rio while he was in the neighborhood dealing with personal matters. However, sitting there with my Si Fu's Si Fu was in itself a completely unprecedented situation for me.
Si Gung remained quiet, available but silent. He doesn't usually continue with trivial matters. If you try three times, he approaches the subject from a 'Kung Fu perspective' and links it to some relevant topic related to the preservation of the Ving Tsun System. It was the end of the day when he had devoted all his energy to the 'To Dai' of Master Thiago Quintela but had set aside some time to be with me, my disciples, and my Si Suk sitting there.
Although I didn't know how to make the most of that moment with my Si Gung, I felt that everyone who was there with him was deeply moved by the circumstances of the moment to some extent. It's simply impossible, after so many years, to be sitting in a square with disciples from different generations  near midnight if you don't love what you do. Since the episode when the Méier School had only six students and almost closed in 2012, I came to believe that it was all about commitment, but I was also mistaken

It was only at the end of last year that I began to realize this... You know, when I used to think that everything revolved around my commitment to my work, I always seemed tired and tense. Then I started to have contact with practitioners of my age group from different generations, such as my Si Suk Thiago Quintela and Felipe Soares, and also Gabriel Mendes, who seek a deeper understanding of the Ving Tsun System that resonates well with my current phase. It's quite special and inspiring to see people who started at the same time as you, speaking with such quality about the Ving Tsun System.
It's true that a 'Kung Fu Life' cannot be programmed, including its ending time. Because, sitting there at that late hour, I found myself thinking about how much I still rely on chronological time to provide experiences.
Finally, after that hot dog, as memorable as the first one I had in the 80s in Rocha Miranda, I remembered that I'm about to turn 40 years old. What I did with the time I dedicated since I was 15, it's hard to say. However, I hope to maintain enough energy to one day be seated not only with disciples from different generations but also with beginner students, having the determination to say nothing and wait for the right approach to happen. With or without a Mo Gun. And maybe I'll never get there, but if I simply make myself available for the process of trying with a beginner's spirit, who knows?

Visiting Master Quintela from Brasília.

Então, atravessamos a rua.

On any given afternoon, I alighted from a rented car with two disciples on a street in Brasília[Brazil´s capital]. We were in search of a Mo Gun with a name that had caught my attention from the very beginning - "Lotus Flower". Ascending the street with uncertain steps, we looked for a facade that resembled a Moy Yat Ving Tsun School, and, within my field of vision, a shop bearing the same name came into view. Si Suk Quintela [photo above] mentioned that his Mo Gun was situated beneath his family's shop. As it turned out, the shop was on the ground floor! So, we crossed the street. My disciple, Daniel, thought the entrance might be at the back, but it wasn't there either. Finally, Daniel entered the shop, and Si Suk's wife, Mrs. Gabriely, and a To Dai named Nathalia received us and showed us a simple door leading to the shop's basement. When the door opened, I saw a staircase descending to the basement, on the right wall, pictures of the Moy Yat lineage from bygone times in Hong Kong, and a smile involuntarily graced my face. It felt as if I were entering a Mo Gun entirely different from the usual ones, the ones my Si Fu used to tell me about from his trips to the USA.
Can you imagine being affiliated with a group for over twenty years and never having had the opportunity to spend even a moment with one of the dearest, most kind-hearted, and dedicated individuals? Well, it took precisely twenty-four years in the Kung Fu family to finally be able to converse calmly with Master Thiago Quintela [photo above], a disciple of my Si Gung, Grandmaster Leo Imamura [photo above].

The day had started much earlier when my disciples and I were involved in one of the pre-events before the trip [Photo above]. I had talked to Si Fu twice about this journey, and with his approval, I dedicated myself to organizing it. We would spend five days in Brasília, interacting with Kung Fu families with whom I had never engaged, except on occasions celebrating Si Gung's birthdays. With that, I found myself in unfamiliar territory after a long time. I spoke to Si Fu, seeking guidance to avoid making mistakes, but one piece of advice summed it up well - "Be aware."

When we arrived at Si Suk Quintela's Mo Gun, a practice for Si Suk Vede Carvalho was in progress. He travels to Brasília once a month, driving 800 km to be with my Si Gung. During these journeys, all the Kung Fu families in Brasília mobilize to assist him. Si Gung remained silent while Si Suk Quintela provided some guidance. After a brief introduction to the Mo Gun, my disciples began to participate. I sat near Si Suk and Si Gung to observe the practice, and after so many years of accompanying my Si Fu, some situations are still new to me. In cases like these, I aim to remain quiet and only speak when necessary.
Since this entire trip arose from a mission I had towards Si Gung, my contact with Si Suk and his To Dai Nathalia had already been occurring throughout the month, so I could send my equipment and arrange for my Kung Fu Family's participation in the "Official Visit" that would take place two days after our arrival. Regarding this visit, I publicly want to express how enthusiastic I was about the hospitality of Thiago [Photo above], Ana, Rodolfo, and Nathalia, who are the members of the Kung Fu Family led by Si Suk Quintela and his wife, Mrs. Gabriely. It particularly touched me to see Ana enjoying the staff practice on the last day and the warm embrace I received from Thiago, as if we were old friends. This positive energy at the end of an "Official Visit" was, for me, a great lesson in the concept of "turning the difficult into the easy," which I believe to be attributed to Professor François Jullien.

Apesar do ambiente descontraído, ninguém ali estava brincando.

During the Official Visit organized by your Family, I occasionally found myself in conversation with Si Suk Quintela during breaks. He would remark to me how much he enjoys living in Brasília and how beneficial the dynamic between him and my Si Baak Nataniel is for everyone. He often jokes about "letting Si Gung work for him." So, I couldn't help but think about how wonderful it would be for my To Dai to go through the same process with my Si Fu. There, in those days of great adventures, I could see in practice how valuable it is to share the responsibility of transmission. On the afternoon when I arrived at Si Suk's Mo Gun, only Si Suk Vede and my disciples were practicing, and three generations of the Moy Yat lineage were sitting there. Si Suk Quintela exudes a sense of lightness. Speaking of lightness, that was the main impression I had of Si Suk Quintela [photo above]: a "light" Family Leader.

There were very impressive moments in that Mo Gun, with the members of the Kung Fu Family entering one by one, seemingly without a scheduled time. If there was a schedule, I didn't notice it. Si Suk's daughter was walking around, and only she was able to shift Si Gung from a serious expression to a more jovial one. Observing their interaction was quite enjoyable. However, Si Gung didn't fail to emphasize to Si Suk Vede the importance of martial conduct by not allowing himself to lose focus on the people coming and going from the premises. He drew an analogy with a traffic incident Si Suk had experienced. Despite the relaxed atmosphere, nobody there was playing around.
In the end, I realized the importance of addressing Mo Lam topics with a "Feminine Conduct," as I saw that even when challenged, practitioners remained energetic and attentive.
I would like to express my gratitude to Si Suk, his wife, and the members of this Kung Fu Family, who are starting off on the right foot, for the opportunity.

A coffee with Master Julio Camacho during the morning breeze

During the Official Visit of my Si Fu, we arranged a reserved breakfast for senior members of our Kung Fu Family. Although only Roberto Viana and I were with Si Fu in the photos, Claudio Teixeira and my Si Hing Leonardo Reis were also there. I had suggested a topic beforehand, but Si Fu preferred to open it up to the others who were present. Somehow, everyone had questions regarding the transmission and preservation of the Ving Tsun System in the future. Si Fu, who that morning was wearing the complete uniform of the ' Julio Camacho Institute' (an institution named after him), seemed already, by his attire alone, quite enthusiastic about the possibilities of this new phase in his career. Perhaps even a final act before his retirement. With this, Si Fu spoke with great animation about his new moment, his updated perspective on how the transmission and preservation of Ving Tsun can occur, respecting the personal characteristics of each Family Leader that may emerge from the Moy Jo Lei Ou Family. Even with a question that my Si Hing took great care to ask regarding how he envisioned leading his Family in the future, Si Fu was entirely supportive. I think I saw Si Hing being surprised, or maybe I just imagined things... Nevertheless, regardless of what was said, it truly caught my attention, the enthusiasm of Si Fu as he spoke. It was a speech full of energy and extremely optimisc. The impression in moments like these is that, regardless of how challenging the end of a cycle may have been, Si Fu's eager gaze towards the next stage is so impressively energetic that it seems as if everything were steps designed to lead to that exact point.

That breakfast made me reflect on a time when Si Fu and I once entered one of the large elevators at the CEO Offices in the Western Zone of Rio together. Si Fu leaned against an iron bar at one end of the elevator, and I leaned against the other. We remained in silence, and Si Fu began to speak to me. The topic revolved around a much-loved Kung Fu brother who had distanced himself not so amicably two years earlier but had re-established contact just minutes before during the breakfast. Since we had always been very close, Si Fu perhaps found it worthwhile to alert me. From what I believe I heard, he said the following - 'Pereira, avoid getting into any kind of conversation with him related to what happened... Refrain from drawing attention or attempting to say anything, you know?' - Si Fu looked at me and continued - 'It must not have been easy for him to re-establish contact; he must already have a lot on his mind... It's important for him to have breathing space. Avoid touching on any topic, and if you see anyone doing so, neutralize it... At the right time, I will talk to him...' I agreed and never spoke with that Kung Fu brother about anything related. However, I couldn't help but reflect on how often, even though there had been losses in various forms, Si Fu refrained from discussing the matter in order to preserve the relationship, as the person who caused the situation would not be in a position to address the issue until some time had passed

At that last Sunday's breakfast, this story kept coming back to my mind several times...
I want to conclude with a disconnected quote from what was written before, but that occurred to me now, which I heard from Si Fu when I was 17 years old and was about to give up - 'Thiago, do you know the difference between being stubborn and being persevering?' - I shook my head negatively, and he continued - 'The stubborn one tries but gives up halfway; the persevering one goes all the way...' I remember smiling, and Si Fu also smiled as he continued - 'Thiago, when we give up, we feel great relief... But when we go all the way with what we set out to do... It's an incomparable feeling...' - Si Fu said one afternoon in 2002 at the reception of the Jacarepaguá Centre. Those were the times of high adventures

An essay on Master Nataniel Rosa

It had been some time since I saw my Si Baak Nataniel Rosa always with a bottle in hand during the studies we promote at the Moy Yat Institute. He was there on camera, and suddenly he would drink something... Finally, I was able to be with him and ask what it was. With great calmness, he said, 'It's water.' I was somewhat frustrated and insisted if it was just water, and he confirmed, 'Yes, I drink two of these a day.' I thought it was some recipe, but it was just water. I think that, in a way, the simplicity with which Si Baak approaches life leaves dreamers like me not quite understanding what his secret is.
I remember being a fan of Master Fabio Campi, and when Si Baak Nataniel appeared at the old MYVT Central School in Sao Paulo and they began to practice, even Si Suk Fabio Campi smiled as Si Baak seemed to play with him as if he were a rookie. At the time, I thought he must be really good to practice with such ease with someone I admired so much. Recently, when asked about the reason for being recognized with an award from the International Wushu Kung Fu Hall of Fame in recognition of his achievements and excellence, he simply said, '...Because I maintained my relationship with my Si Fu...' And he continued, '...I don't consider myself very intelligent, so why would I not make use of his intelligence to my advantage?' He concluded as if stating the obvious

- Diz Si Baak.

Si Baak moves around his Mo Gun with his enormous water bottle... He's always laughing and chatting with some of his disciples as if they were old friends. Despite his size and presence, he manages to blend in among the people without ever drawing attention to himself. Meanwhile, my Si Gung, Grandmaster Leo Imamura, spends most of his time sitting in Si Baak's office chair or in one of the 'Gau Yi' next to the Sam Toi. Si Gung interrupts the practice, makes comments, and talks to the practitioners, while Si Baak mingles among them as if he were just one of them. This behavior is quite different from what you would expect from someone who received such an important award, watched by over two million people who were tuning in live via the internet to the event happening in Canada. Regarding the fact that he is already a veteran Family Leader with the title of Senior Master and still maintains a beginner's spirit with his Si Fu, he comments, '...That's our differentiating factor. There's a whole movement happening, and we need to stay united...' - says Si Baak.

When I asked Si Baak about his schedule, he replied, 'During this period, my schedule will be the same as your Si Gung's.' This response touched me deeply, as I spent a few minutes reminiscing about the times when I used to rush from college to catch a bus that would take me in time for lunch with Si Fu and Paula Gama on the other side of the city. Later, I began working in Méier, and when I read that message, I wondered how many years had passed. Then, I could see Si Baak acting as an assistant to Si Gung on various occasions, even with my disciples [pictured above] who were with me. Si Gung allows himself not to look directly while dealing with other matters, as Si Baak punctuates as if it were Si Gung himself speaking. This is quite curious, as I heard that Si Taai Gung Moy Yat opened his first Mo Gun near Si Jo Ip Man's Mo Gun to remain close to his Si Fu. So, how does Si Baak, who sometimes appears to have a supporting role in his own Mo Gun, have disciples who are so sharp, albeit so different from him?
Si Baak says he doesn't agree with Si Gung all the time but is always ready to engage in difficult conversations when needed. And I believe that, as he can transition from a completely relaxed approach to a very serious and assertive comment in an instant

At the end of five days with Si Baak, I could hear from him about how my Si Fu had participated in various moments of his journey, whether related to his career or the Kung Fu Life during travels. However, in some way, it was on the penultimate day of the trip, at the conclusion of the Official Visit to the Lotus Flower MYVT School, that my disciples were greatly impressed by him.
Si Baak had spent the day in the corners during the event of his younger Kung Fu brother. He spoke little, sometimes laughed, and at other times showed videos of engines to Si Gung during breaks. - '...He didn't have to come at all, but he made a point of being there for both days.' - Si Gung pointed out at another moment, highlighting Si Baak's choice to be present. Then, when the words were passed to him, all that playfulness gave way to very serious and important comments about various points that had occurred throughout the day. My disciples were deeply impressed not only by the change in tone in his speech but also by the quality of what he said, even though he seemed not to be paying attention. It was a true Masterclass at that moment. As I passed by him while everyone said their goodbyes, Si Gung said to him only the following: 'Your speech was very good.'
Despite this, what struck me the most happened in our last embrace. Si Baak said, 'Come back anytime you want... Seriously... We are all one big family'

A historic visit by Master Julio Camacho: A rookies heart.

Over seventy days ago, my Si Fu Julio Camacho offered the possibility of arranging his visit to Brazil in the month of September. It would be the first time that my Kung Fu Family alone would take care of your visit. For me, this official visit was significant for other reasons, and why not benefit everyone in the process? With that in mind, we devised a schedule that would be as comprehensive as possible. It wouldn't matter if you were a seasoned practitioner, someone who has been away from the practice, or simply a guest. My disciples extended invitations to members from the entire Moy Jo Lei Ou Clan, and for those who attended, I'm sure it was a historic event. However, none of this would have been possible without Si Fu's unwavering determination to be present

Si Fu had left his home on Friday morning in a distant place called Sarasota, Florida. Prior to that, he had stayed in a shelter due to a hurricane for four days. On that Friday, he worked, rented a car, took two flights, and arrived with a smile at Rio International Airport the following day at 7 a.m. I awaited him and could see his smile up close. Later, on that same day, while we were having coffee in a secluded corner of Barra Shopping, he would have said, '...You have no idea what I did to be here. If this isn't enough to demonstrate my desire to be here with you...' Those words were wrapped in an incredible example because throughout the day, Si Fu conversed, interacted, demonstrated movements, lectured, all with a broad smile on his face, followed by an expression as if he were the most well-rested person in the room, when in fact he had been in transit for more than 24 hours.

In the background on the right, I watch my Si Fu
conduct a conversation about the wooden dummy.

One of the fundamental reasons for this visit was to bring my Si Fu closer to my Kung Fu Family. Due to his ethics, he prefers to interact with my disciples through me or in my presence, thus avoiding any intergenerational misunderstandings. For me, it was essential that this connection took place because I attribute everything I know about Kung Fu to Si Fu. Even when it wasn't him who said, demonstrated, or commented on something, it was through the opportunities he provided me with that I could gain access. I would even say that I developed the ability to comprehend through him. Therefore, it is only natural for me to desire to bring him closer to my disciples so that they can have contact with this person who is so important to me.
Even with the presence of members from other families, this intentionality was never compromised, considering that we made extensive preparations to receive him. Errors occurred here and there, but no one was capable of doubting the intelligent effort undertaken by members of the Moy Fat Lei Family to welcome not only Si Fu but also everyone who was present.

- Disse-me Si Fu em certo momento.

Interestingly, in the most important moments when the most remarkable conversations occurred between us this weekend, I forgot to take photos in all of them. On one occasion, even Si Fu suggested that the recording be done, and ten seconds later, I completely forgot. I think that in a way, what was said, heard, and felt was so important that I became completely immersed. "...The proof that the decision I made back then was correct is us being here now having this conversation..." - Si Fu told me at a certain point.
For me, the proof that this visit was successful was the rookie's heart with which I took Si Fu to the airport upon his departure: I didn't know whether to speak or stay silent. I missed the parking, his suitcase with the passport got stuck inside the car, and the key wouldn't open it. Throughout the road, it seemed like I was driving a tank, making basic traffic errors... All of this, because of the strength of the symbol attributed to the relationship, or any other feeling that I can't explain.
Despite the forgetfulness, I think I managed to take the most important photo of this trip, which is the one at the airport that concludes this post. I don't recall ever positioning myself so formally for a photo in a usually relaxed moment and location, with Si Fu as in this photo... Light heart, mission accomplished, and a great example that even though he talks so much about Kung Fu enabling you to live life lightly, when it gets heavy, Si Fu seems to know how to handle it in a very inspiring way as well, as he did with the heavy script to be present.
