Why does GM Leo Imamura not give up?

 

Existe um viaduto que liga uma região do Rio considerada "terra dos bambas" ao bairro de Rocha Miranda. Quando eu subo com o carro por aquele viaduto, por alguns segundos é possível ver boa parte do bairro onde cresci, então me sinto em casa. Por um breve momento, os problemas da vida parecem desaparecer. Recentemente, porém, o bairro ficou mais perigoso, meu melhor amigo tem muitas  atividades e não tem tido tempo e até o restaurante onde costumávamos almoçar aos domingos fechou.

Talvez seja por isso que, sentado com a luz do sol nos meus olhos em uma mesa na Padaria Manhattan na manhã desta sexta-feira, ao ver Si Gung caminhando em nossa direção, onde eu e meu discípulo Lucas o aguardávamos, tive um sentimento semelhante ao do viaduto. Me senti em casa. Me dirigi até a porta para pegar a mala do Si Gung e cumprimentá-lo; ele chegou com um sorriso. Não sabia que horas ele tinha ido dormir ou o quão cansado estava, mas parecia feliz em nos ver. Assim que se sentou, lembrei que ainda não havia feito os pedidos, mas ele não me chamou atenção por isso. Sua simples presença já era suficiente para nos elevar a outro nível de atenção. Sem sermões, sem lições, sem assuntos que não estivessem ligados diretamente ao nosso trabalho, em poucos segundos Si Gung nos transportou para a "Dimensão Kung Fu". Seu café da manhã acabou rapidamente, mas ele não fez menção de ir embora. Continuava discutindo assuntos determinantes e relevantes sobre nosso presente e futuro, deixando claro com sua atitude que não estava ali apenas para comer. Já ouvi dizer que "casa é onde o coração está".

There is a viaduct that connects a region of Rio known as "Samba´s masters land" to the Rocha Miranda wild neighborhood. When I drive up that viaduct, for a few seconds I can see much of the neighborhood where I grew up, and I feel at home. For a brief moment, life's problems seem to disappear. Recently, however, the Rocha Miranda has become more dangerous, my best friend has many commitments and hasn't had time, and even the restaurant where we used to have Sunday lunches has closed.

Perhaps that's why, sitting with the sunlight in my eyes at a table in Manhattan Bakery on Friday morning, when I saw Si Gung walking towards us, where my disciple Lucas and I were waiting, I had a feeling similar to when I drive over that viaduct towards Rocha Miranda neighborhood. I felt at home right there. I walked up to the door to greet Si Gung and fetch his suitcase; he arrived with a smile. I didn't know what time he had gone to bed or how tired he was, but he seemed happy to see us. Once he sat down, I remembered I hadn't even taken our orders yet, but he didn't admonish me for it. His mere presence was enough to elevate our attention to another level. Without sermons, without lessons, without discussing anything unrelated to our work, Si Gung swiftly transported us to the "Kung Fu Dimension". His breakfast ended quickly, but he showed no intention of leaving. He continued to discuss pivotal and pertinent matters about our present and future, clearly indicating through his demeanor that he wasn't there just to eat. I've heard someone said that "home is where the heart is."

Começamos a manhã com um verdadeiro presente, que foi a oportunidade de observar Si Gung conduzindo um Momento Programado de Acesso. Observar Si Gung trabalhar faz com que você se sinta envergonhado pela sua ética de trabalho na transmissão do Sistema Ving Tsun(Seja ela qual for). O nível de atenção aos detalhes e sua maneira de incentivar a excelência (sem forçar) obrigam quem está assistindo a lembrar-se de  se doar tanto quanto ele ao estudo do Sistema. De fato, fiquei muito tocado ao vê-lo levantar-se para dar detalhes sobre o "Siu Nim Tau" (foto acima) da maneira como fez. Estavam presentes três mestres e, mesmo assim, ele fez questão de fazê-lo. Foi algo muito especial.

We started the morning with a true gift, which was the opportunity to observe Si Gung leading a class. Watching Si Gung work makes you feel ashamed of your work ethic in passing down the Ving Tsun System (whichever it may be). The level of attention to detail and his way of encouraging excellence (without forcing it) compel those watching to remember not to give any less effort than he does in studying the System. In fact, I was deeply moved to see him rise to provide details about the "Siu Nim Tau" (photo above) in the manner he did. There were three masters present, and yet he made a point of doing so. It was something very special.

Em momentos como esse, eu naturalmente esvazio o coração em relação a tudo que penso saber, e ouço as orientações do Si Gung como se estivesse ouvindo sobre o "Cham Kiu" pela primeira vez. Desde a ordem dos tutores até os apontamentos, tudo é feito com muito cuidado, coerência e zelo. Você não se sente exposto e por não temer "perder a cara", pode permitir que o eterno aprendiz que carrega dentro de si tome a frente. Hoje ouvi Si Gung dizer: "O tempo que o discípulo... Que o praticante disponibiliza... Ele precisa valer ouro para nós..." E de fato, ele faz isso a cada segundo. Então, você poderia me ver ali pensando: "Ei! Deixa eu prestar atenção nisso para não esquecer..."

In moments like these, I naturally empty my heart regarding everything I think I know, and I listen to Si Gung's guidance as if hearing about "Cham Kiu" for the first time. From the order of the tutors to the orientations, everything is done with great care, coherence, and zeal. You don't feel exposed and, by not fearing "losing face", you can let the eternal apprentice within take the lead. Today, I heard Si Gung say, "The time that the disciple... that the practitioner makes available... it needs to be worth its weight in gold to us..." And indeed, he does this every second. So you could see me there thinking, "Hey! Let me pay attention to this so I don't forget..."

Si Gung aproveita suas visitas a São Paulo para dedicar tempo aos seus pais e resolver questões particulares com eles. Ele também abre sua vida para que possamos estar presentes nesses momentos. "E aí, Pereira? Onde você quer almoçar hoje?", perguntou ele, como costuma fazer. Devido à minha "fase Coreia", inspirada na riqueza cultural que tenho aprendido com meu querido amigo Choi Ki Hon em São Paulo, sugeri mais uma vez um restaurante coreano. E lá estávamos todos nós! Durante o trajeto, pude conversar com Si Gung sobre livros de artes marciais e cultura chinesa. Si Gung geralmente relaciona o assunto com algum tema que direcione a salvaguarda do Sistema Ving Tsun e como podemos entender melhor essa missão. Isso nos ajuda constantemente a não esquecer nossa missão e a deixar as amenidades para outro momento.

Si Gung takes advantage of his visits to São Paulo to spend time with his parents and resolve personal matters with them. He also opens up his life so that we can be present in these moments. "So, Pereira? Where do you want to have lunch today?" he asked, as he usually does. Due to my "Korea phase," inspired by the cultural richness I've been learning from my dear friend Choi Ki Hon from São Paulo, I suggested once again a Korean restaurant. And there we all were! During the journey, I was able to talk with Si Gung about martial arts books and Chinese culture. Si Gung typically relates the subject to some theme that directs the safeguarding of the Ving Tsun System and how to better understand this mission. This constantly helps us to not forget our mission and to leave the amenities for another time.

Voltamos para o Instituto Moy Yat onde conversamos e ele me incentivou mais uma vez a dedicar-me mais ao desenvolvimento do meu próprio entendimento sobre as coisas. Logo depois, acompanhei uma aula de Biu Ji com seu filho Lukas Imamura. Em seguida, fui com ele até a barbearia e conversamos mais sobre o momento do Grande Clã no caminho. Finalmente, quando voltamos, logo depois chegaram o Sensei Ricardo Leite e o Edson, que é praticante do Programa Ving Tsun Experience (foto acima à direita). Meu discípulo Lucas também chegou (foto acima à esquerda) e lá estava Si Gung novamente! A mesma energia que demonstrou às 8h quando chegou à padaria. E ali me perguntei: "Por que Si Gung não desiste?" - É uma pergunta válida, considerando todos os dissabores que a posição dele também proporciona. Porém, hoje mais cedo ele também havia falado comigo na mesma padaria: "Nossa diferença é que nós não trabalhamos... Nós amamos o que fazemos. Uma pessoa trabalha no que não gosta cinco dias por semana e precisa descomprimir no final de semana; quando a diferença entre os dias trabalhados e os de descanso se torna muito desproporcional, ela tira férias. Nós não tiramos férias... Nós amamos o que fazemos..."

We returned to Moy Yat Institute where we talked, and he once again encouraged me to dedicate myself more to developing my own understanding of things. Shortly after, I attended a Biu Ji class of his son Lukas Imamura. Afterwards, we went to the barber shop and discussed more about the current state of the Clan on the way. Finally, when we returned, Sensei Ricardo Leite and Edson, who is a practitioner in the Ving Tsun Experience Programme (photo top right), arrived soon after. My disciple Lucas also arrived (photo top left), and there was Si Gung again! The same energy he showed when he arrived at the bakery at 8 a.m. And there I wondered: "Why doesn't Si Gung give up?" - It's a valid question, considering all the challenges his position also brings. However, earlier today he had also spoken to me at the same bakery: "The difference between us is that we don't work... We love what we do. A person works at something they don't like five days a week and needs to unwind on the weekend; when the difference between working days and rest days becomes too disproportionate, they take holidays. We don't take holidays... We love what we do..."

Observar Si Gung trabalhar hoje mais uma vez foi muito inspirador. Sabe, eu consegui estar presente em cada momento, mesmo mais tarde quando ele deu uma entrevista ao Sensei Ricardo Leite, até nos despedirmos pouco antes da 1h da manhã. O sentimento que dura segundos quando subo o viaduto que liga os bairros de Madureira a Rocha Miranda, hoje durou o dia inteiro. Não havia problemas, não havia nada lá fora, apenas o encantamento renovado pelo Sistema que escolhi estudar há 25 anos. Eu sei que para você que está lendo, talvez não compreenda completamente o que estou tentando descrever. No entanto, Si Gung também disse hoje em sua entrevista: "...Simbologias existem para alcançarmos certas consciências que a simples descrição não alcança. Daí a diferença entre prosa e poesia..." 

Eu nunca desisti.

Watching Si Gung work today once again was deeply inspiring. You know, I managed to be fully present in every moment, even later when he gave an interview to Sensei Ricardo Leite, until we said goodbye shortly before 1 a.m. The fleeting feeling I get when I drive over the viaduct connecting the neighborhoods of Madureira(Samba´s masters land) to Rocha Miranda(my childhood neighborhood) lasted the entire day today. There were no issues, nothing outside mattered; there was only the renewed enchantment with the System I chose to study 25 years ago. I understand that for you, the reader, you may not fully grasp what I'm trying to describe. However, Si Gung also said in his interview today: "...Symbols exist to reach certain levels of consciousness that simple description cannot reach. Hence the difference between prose and poetry..."

Study of Level 6 with GM Leo: No more coffee with milk

Alguns poucos meses atrás, fiz um estudo do Nível 6 do Programa Ving Tsun Experience com o Si Gung. Foi um trabalho muito especial, no qual ele pôde compartilhar durante todo o processo uma série de detalhes que, para mim, soaram como total novidade no que diz respeito ao estudo do Sistema Ving Tsun. Existe uma possibilidade de compartilhamento de informações no Ving Tsun Experience, que ao ser realizado durante a jornada Kung Fu no Sistema Tradicional, pode acabar comprometendo a natureza do Domínio Baat Jaam Do, no qual a transmissão silenciosa alcança o seu ápice.

Eu costumava não entender a razão de existir do Programa Ving Tsun Experience, e estranhava a ênfase que era dada a ele. Depois de todo esse tempo mais próximo ao Si Gung, pude não só observar como esse programa é trabalhado por profissionais que seguem este programa, bem como observar como o próprio Si Gung faz uso dele e como ele o atualiza constantemente. Nessas horas, lembro de quando chegavam as atualizações do programa em meu email, por vezes eu nem abria, pois não compreendia sua importância. Hoje percebo o quanto cada linha que gera uma nova versão permite um trabalho mais consistente. Pude também presenciar a importância que os Mestres que seguem este programa dão para suas atualizações. - "...Achei que você fez muito bem quando abriu o arquivo e o leu junto com o Edson! A ideia é essa! Você não precisa perder tempo decorando a lista do Ving Tsun Experience, você já tem muita coisa para se preocupar no Sistema Tradicional, por isso o que você fez é exatamente a lógica do tutor do Ving Tsun Experience..." - Teria dito Si Gung naquela noite de Quinta.

 A few months ago, I conducted a study of Level 6 of the Ving Tsun Experience Program with Si Gung. It was a very special work, during which he could share throughout the process a series of details that sounded completely new to me regarding the study of the Ving Tsun System. There is a possibility of information sharing in the Ving Tsun Experience, which, when conducted during the Kung Fu journey in the Traditional System, may compromise the nature of the Baat Jaam Do Domain, in which silent transmission reaches its peak.

I used to not understand the reason for the existence of the Ving Tsun Experience Program and found the emphasis given to it strange. After spending more time with Si Gung, I could not only observe how this program is worked by professionals who follow it, but also observe how Si Gung himself uses it and updates it constantly. At those times, I remember when the program updates arrived in my email, sometimes I didn't even open them because I didn't understand their importance. Today, I realise how each line that generates a new version allows for more consistent work. I could also witness the importance that Masters who follow this program give to its updates. - "...I thought you did very well when you opened the file and read it with Edson! That's the idea! You don't need to waste time memorising the Ving Tsun Experience list, you already have a lot to worry about in the Traditional System, so what you did is exactly the logic of the Ving Tsun Experience tutor..." - Si Gung would have said on that Thursday night.

Procuro aprender com Si Gung a cada momento. Por exemplo: Ele sempre parece estar fazendo algo em seu notebook, e de fato está. Isso não muda o fato de que ele mantém uma atenção não somente ao que está sendo dito, mas ao que está ocorrendo. Por vezes ele levanta os olhos, levanta as sobrancelhas como quem presta atenção, fica balançando as pernas para dentro e para fora e, dependendo do que vê, levanta ou volta a digitar. Essa dinâmica me lembra o ano de 2006, quando eu assistia meu Si Fu com os MPA's da Paula Gama e suas filhas Anna e Adda. Naquelas tardes, elas estavam acessando o Domínio "Biu Ji". Si Fu sentava-se em sua cadeira, às vezes mexendo em seu computador, às vezes simplesmente observando o que acontecia. Para mim, era um processo muito importante, porque me sentia auxiliando apenas, levando em conta as limitações que tinha.

Da mesma maneira, na noite de Quinta ao mobilizar o Edson no Nível 6, incríveis 18 anos depois daquelas tardes de altas aventuras com o Si Fu no antigo Núcleo Barra, tenho condições de assistir o Si Gung sabendo que ele está monitorando. Afinal, quando retornar ao Rio, estarei por minha conta então considero sempre uma excelente oportunidade para aprender o que não fazer.

Tinha um cara que conheci em 2018, namorado de uma amiga, ele era vendedor e se autodenominava "águia". - "É que eu sou um cara 'águia'" - Dizia ele. Eu achava aquela lógica muito divertida, porque de fato ele era um vendedor sem igual. Você sentava com ele para comer um petisco e sentia vontade de comprar um ar condicionado, sabe-se lá porque. E eu me perguntava: "Será que em meu ramo, eu sou um cara águia?" . Sendo assim, meu contato recente com esses profissionais atentos em um nível águia, imediatamente me transformou em um "café com leite" nesse grupo. Ao contrário de me sentir mal, me senti muito motivado por ter agora a possibilidade de almejar novos níveis de compreensão sobre o Sistema e os Programas. Então, nesta noite de Quinta com o Edson, depois de dois anos de muito trabalho, estava finalmente fazendo um trabalho razoável dentro do que tinha de mais atualizado no Nível 6 do Programa Ving Tsun Experience. O Mestre Quintela costuma dizer que se você praticar por dez anos a partir de agora, serão dez anos de um estudo de alto nível. Então, é uma sensação muito boa de recomeço que venho experimentando e de redescobertas.

I seek to learn from Si Gung at every moment. For example: He always seems to be doing something on his notebook, and indeed he is. That doesn't change the fact that he maintains attention not only to what is being said, but to what is happening. Sometimes he raises his eyes, arches his eyebrows as if paying attention, sways his legs in and out, and depending on what he sees, he either raises or resumes typing. This dynamic reminds me of the year 2006 when I used to assist my Si Fu with the classes of Paula Gama and her daughters Anna and Adda. During those afternoons, they were accessing the "Biu Ji" Domain. Si Fu sat in his chair, sometimes tinkering with his computer, sometimes simply observing what was happening. For me, it was a very important process because I felt like I was assisting, taking into account the limitations I had.

Similarly, on Thursday night while mobilizing Edson at Level 6, incredible 18 years after those afternoons of high adventures with Si Fu at the former MYVT Barra School, I have the opportunity to watch Si Gung knowing that he is monitoring. After all, when I return to Rio, I will be on my own, so I always consider it an excellent opportunity to learn what not to do.

There was a guy I met in 2018, the boyfriend of a friend; he was a salesman and referred to himself as an "eagle". - "It's because I'm an 'eagle' guy,"- he would say. I found that logic very amusing because indeed, he was an unparalleled salesman. You would sit down with him to eat a snack and feel like buying an air conditioner, for goodness' sake. And I wondered: "Am I an eagle guy in my field?" Therefore, my recent contact with these attentive professionals at an eagle level immediately turned me into a "coffee with milk guy" in that group. Instead of feeling bad, I felt very motivated to now aim for new levels of understanding about the System and the Programs. So, on this Thursday night with Edson, after two years of hard work, I was finally doing a reasonable job within the most updated Level 6 of the Ving Tsun Experience Program. Master Quintela often says that if you practice for ten years from now on, it will be ten years of high-level study. So, it's a very good feeling of a fresh start and rediscovery that I've been experiencing.

Observar o progresso do Edson é algo sem paralelos. Tenho conseguido acompanhar como o Edson evolui a cada visita a São Paulo. Muitos dos meus discípulos puderam, de maneira singela, contribuir de alguma forma e se beneficiaram com isso. Realmente fico muito impressionado com como o Programa se encaixa de maneira sistêmica. Si Gung parecia muito animado quando fomos jantar. Meu discípulo Lucas estava no carro e pôde compartilhar dessa sensação de quanto Si Gung estava satisfeito com o desenrolar das coisas e com o que tinha ocorrido naquela noite.

Naquela semana, recebi um vídeo que falava da importância de não "trabalharmos duro demais", pois a vida passa muito rápido. Recebo muitos vídeos com essa temática dos poucos e bons amigos que tenho; muitos se preocupam com o nível de imersão que vivo. Naquele dia, mandei o vídeo para Si Gung e pedi que ele desse sua opinião. "...Acho muito útil para aqueles que apenas trabalham demais. Por outro lado, isso tem sido uma desculpa para muitos não exercerem sua existência..." - ele teria escrito. Então, naquela quinta-feira, senti um pouco disso. Foram dois anos me sentindo perdido, atrasado, defasado, "café com leite" e muito mais... Mas de alguma maneira que não sei explicar, durante aqueles minutos de estudo do Nível 6, senti que algo encaixou. Foi como um suspiro de alívio saber mais uma vez que não existe mágica na Dimensão Kung Fu, e só com muito estudo se chega lá.

Não espero que quem leia até aqui entenda o que estou dizendo, mas esses são apenas fragmentos de memória para expressar o sentimento que sentia com Si Gung e Lucas no carro naquela noite de quinta-feira. E lembrei-me da fala de Johnathan Kent para seu filho Clark no meu seriado favorito de todos os tempos "Smallville" - "O trabalho faz o homem honesto, Clark".

Vamos com tudo!

Observing Edson's progress is unparalleled. I've been able to witness how Edson evolves with each visit to São Paulo. Many of my disciples have been able, in a subtle way, to contribute in some form and have benefited from it. I am truly impressed by how the Program fits in a systemic way. Si Gung seemed very excited when we went out for dinner. My disciple Lucas was in the car and could share in the feeling of how satisfied Si Gung was with how things were unfolding and with what had happened that night.

During that week, I received a video that spoke about the importance of not "working too hard" because life passes by too quickly. I receive many videos with this theme from the few good friends I have; many are concerned about the level of immersion I live in. On that day, I sent the video to Si Gung and asked for his opinion. "...I find it very useful for those who simply work too much. On the other hand, this has been an excuse for many not to exercise their existence," - he would have written. So, on that Thursday, I felt a bit of that. It had been two years of feeling lost, behind, outdated, "coffee with milk," and much more... But somehow, in a way I can't explain, during those minutes studying Level 6, I felt that something clicked. It was like a sigh of relief to know once again that there is no magic in the Kung Fu Dimension, and only with a lot of study can one get there.

I don't expect anyone reading this far to understand what I'm saying, but these are just fragments of memory to express the feeling I had with Si Gung and Lucas in the car that Thursday night. And I remembered Johnathan Kent's words to his son Clark in my all-time favorite TV series "Smallville" - "Work makes the man honest, Clark."

“Biu Ji” practice with Grand Master Leo Imamura - A story about hands and pockets

 

No último final de semana, realizei mais um movimento em busca de um melhor entendimento sobre como transmitir o Sistema Ving Tsun de maneira mais inteligente e eficaz. Essa busca também envolvia uma melhor compreensão sobre o que de fato envolve a responsabilidade de ser um "Si Fu". Não o que pensava sozinho, tenho tentado entender melhor essa função como um representante de uma Linhagem que quase não aparece, sem deixar de monitorar a jornada de cada um de seus discípulos. E para conseguir me fazer presente nessas viagens, tenho contado com o apoio irrestrito da minha Família Kung Fu, que parece estar surfando nas boas vibrações desse novo momento.

Na sexta-feira, meu discípulo Luiz Grativol me acompanhou até a rodoviária. Fazia muito tempo que não tínhamos um momento só nosso, então valeu muito a pena. Chegando em São Paulo, meu discípulo Lucas me aguardava, e de lá fomos direto para a Padaria Manhattan, onde encontraríamos meu Si Gung [foto acima] para a primeira atividade de um dia repleto de muito estudo.

Over the past weekend, I made another move in search of a better understanding of how to pass down the Ving Tsun System more intelligently and effectively. This quest also involved a deeper comprehension of the true responsibilities that come with being a "Si Fu." Not what I had initially thought alone, I've been striving to better grasp this role as a discreet representative of  a Lineage, all while keeping a watchful eye on each disciplel's journey. To ensure my presence during these ventures, I've relied on the unwavering support of my Kung Fu Family, seemingly riding the positive vibes of this new chapter.

On Friday, my disciple Luiz Grativol accompanied me to the bus station. It had been a long time since we had a moment just to ourselves, so it was well worth it. Upon arriving in São Paulo, my disciple Lucas awaited me, and from there, we headed straight to Manhattan Bakery, where we would meet my Si Gung [photo above] for the first activity of a day filled with extensive study.

Si Gung nos encontrou com muita boa vontade na padaria Manhattan. Estávamos apenas nós três. Por vezes, tenho algum tema ou pergunta a fazer para aproveitar o tempo que ele disponibiliza. Quando não é o caso, ele aproveita alguma pergunta rasa que faço e a envolve com uma resposta bem mais abrangente, permitindo-nos ter uma melhor compreensão da chamada "Dimensão Kung Fu". Si Gung tem falado muito sobre praticantes que se encontram na Jornada Kung Fu por décadas, sem acessar a "Dimensão Kung Fu", ou que a acessaram por poucos minutos. Talvez por isso, cada tema que ele aborda ou cada momento à mesa é sempre para nos conduzir a essa compreensão.

Portanto, mais de uma vez, entendi claramente que quando Si Gung estava chamando a atenção de Lucas, na verdade, indiretamente estava chamando a minha atenção por alguma trapalhada. Pois, ao ficarmos muito tempo na posição de "Si Fu" com alguém nos servindo, não é difícil ficarmos desatentos quando há alguém de uma ou duas gerações antes da nossa.

Si Gung met us at the Manhattan bakery with great willingness. It was just the three of us. At times, I have a topic or question to bring up to make the most of the time he makes available. When that's not the case, he seizes on some shallow question I pose and wraps it in a much broader answer, allowing us to gain a better understanding of the so-called "Kung Fu Dimension." Si Gung has spoken extensively about practitioners who have been on the Kung Fu Journey for decades without accessing the "Kung Fu Dimension" or who accessed it for only a few minutes. Perhaps for this reason, every topic he touches on or every incident at the table is always aimed at bringing us to this understanding.

Therefore, on more than one occasion, I clearly understood that when Si Gung was drawing Lucas's attention, he was actually indirectly drawing my attention to some mishap. Because, when we spend a lot of time in the "Si Fu" position with someone serving us, it's not difficult to become inattentive when there is someone from one or two generations before ours.

"Me diz uma coisa... Você gostaria de ter a minha vida?" - Teria me perguntado Si Gung com uma rápida olhadela para trás e um sorriso, enquanto se dirigia para pegar o seu carro na garagem. - "Eu não conseguiria dar conta" - Respondi honestamente. Com um sorriso, Si Gung concluiu - "Tudo tem um preço". Si Gung fez uma série de ajustes nas aulas de maneira que pudéssemos aproveitar o máximo de conteúdos diferentes. Desde aulas online até presenciais, foi muito impressionante ver como Si Gung mantinha a mesma energia para cada pessoa que chegava, sem diminuir, sem flutuar, sem nenhum assunto que não fosse o tema da aula, e como deixar tanto a transmissão quanto o aprendizado mais eficientes. Praticantes chegavam um atrás do outro em pleno sábado, e naquele dia, pude entender melhor que existe uma outra camada de trabalho que envolve uma maior disponibilidade. Uma melhor compreensão de como ajustar os diferentes horários e pessoas, para que todos tirem o máximo de proveito. - "A minha razão de viver é essa" - Teria dito Si Gung.

"Tell me something... Would you like to have my life?"- Si Gung would have asked me with a quick glance back and a smile, as he headed to get his car from the garage. - "I wouldn't be able to handle it," - I replied honestly. With a smile, Si Gung concluded- "Everything has a price."

Si Gung made a series of adjustments to the classes so that we could make the most of different content. From online to in-person classes, it was very impressive to see how Si Gung maintained the same energy for each person who arrived, without diminishing, without fluctuating, without any subject other than the topic of the lesson, and how to make both the transmission and learning more efficient.

Practitioners arrived one after the other on a Saturday, and on that day, I could better understand that there is another layer of work that involves greater availability. A better understanding of how to adjust different schedules and people, so that everyone takes full advantage. - "My reason for living is this,"-  Si Gung would have said.

Eu havia pedido ao Si Gung para ter meu discípulo Lucas comigo durante todos os momentos que estivesse com ele. Deixei claro que não tinha problema algum em: errar, ser chamado a atenção, fazer alguma trapalhada, etc., na frente do Lucas. Minha intenção em me tornar um melhor Si Fu do que tenho sido precisa estar acima disso.

No domingo, amanheci com febre de 39º; era esse o dia do meu tão esperado MPA do Domínio "Biu Ji", pois tinha o desejo de entender melhor a transmissão nessa natureza. Apenas com Si Gung e Lucas no Instituto Moy Yat, Si Gung disse: "Então, Thiago, vou pedir para você fazer o Siu Nim Tau, Cham Kiu e Biu Ji..." - Quando comecei a fazer as formas, um sentimento muito bom me ocorreu. Apesar da febre, por alguns instantes, me senti de volta ao Núcleo Jacarepaguá no início dos anos 2000... Me sentia leve pelo simples prazer de praticar.

Fiz o trabalho de "Chi Sau" sob a orientação do Si Gung e considero que tenha sido um passo fundamental para algo melhor no futuro.

Recentemente, Si Gung chamou minha atenção por uma foto que publiquei na qual meu Si Fu está demonstrando o "Da Jong" e eu acompanho com as mãos no bolso - "O que você acha dessa postura para um momento de experiência marcial?" - Me questionou Si Gung. Então, durante toda essa experiência de Biu Ji, Si Gung chamou a atenção do Lucas de uma forma bem peculiar [e por várias vezes] por ele estar exatamente com as mãos no bolso.

Refleti sobre o quanto nós damos o exemplo, seja ele qual for.

I had asked Si Gung to have my disciple Lucas with me during all the moments I was with him. I made it clear that there was no problem in making mistakes, being corrected, or messing up in front of Lucas. My intention to become a better Si Fu than I have been needs to be above such concerns.

On Sunday, I woke up with a fever of 39°C; it was the day of my much-anticipated MPA in the "Biu Ji" Domain, as I had the desire to better understand the transmission in this context. With only Si Gung and Lucas at the Moy Yat Institute, Si Gung said, "So, Thiago, I'm going to ask you to do the Siu Nim Tau, Cham Kiu, and Biu Ji..." - As I began to perform the forms, a very good feeling came over me. Despite the fever, for a few moments, I felt back at the Jacarepaguá School in the early 2000s... I felt light from the sheer pleasure of practicing.

I engaged in "Chi Sau" work under Si Gung's guidance, and I consider it a fundamental step for something better in the future.

Recently, Si Gung drew my attention to a photo I posted in which my Si Fu is demonstrating the "Da Jong," and I accompany him with my hands in my pockets - "What do you think of this posture for a martial experience moment?"-  Si Gung questioned me. So, throughout this Biu Ji experience, Si Gung drew Lucas's attention in a very peculiar way [and several times] for him having his hands in his pockets exactly like I did.

I reflected on how much we set an example, whatever it may be.

VISITING SAO PAULO WITH MY KUNG FU STUDENTS

 Em meados da década passada, eu tentava acompanhar os passos ágeis do meu Mestre Julio Camacho no aeroporto de Congonhas, na cidade de São Paulo. Era um final de tarde, e não lembro qual era a ocasião; apenas me recordo de, ao final de algumas rampas, encontrar o Mestre Anderson Maia, meu Si Baak, que havia chegado pouco antes. Ao nos ver descendo a rampa, com um sorriso no rosto, bradou: 'Julio Camacho e seu leal discípulo.' - Si Fu também sorriu, abraçou-o e, em seguida, foi a minha vez.

In the middle of the last decade, I was trying to keep up with the swift steps of my Master Julio Camacho at Congonhas Airport in the city of São Paulo. It was late in the afternoon, and I can't recall the occasion; I only remember that, at the end of a few ramps, I encountered Master Anderson Maia, my Si Baak, who had arrived a little earlier. Upon seeing us descending the ramp, with a smile on his face, he exclaimed, 'Julio Camacho and his loyal disciple.' - Si Fu also smiled, embraced him, and then I greeted him.

'Quando conheci o Lucas, ele tinha um corte de cabelo igual ao de uma cuia' - Lucas já não aguenta mais ouvir isso toda vez que quero contar de forma anedótica quanto tempo o conheço. Mesmo assim, ele sempre sorri como se fosse a primeira vez que ouvisse. Estava em São Paulo para um estudo sobre o Domínio "Baat Jaam Do" no Instituto Moy Yat e me hospedei na residência do Lucas [foto]. Para mim, foi realmente emocionante entrar no local. O mesmo garotinho de 2008, agora com seu próprio apartamento em outra cidade.

Tentamos aproveitar ao máximo nossa estadia: estudamos o "Cham Kiu" de modo que seu irmão Daniel, que também faz parte da minha Família Kung Fu, pudesse se beneficiar. Para todas as coisas que fizemos durante esses dias na casa dele, procurei estar ciente o tempo todo da razão pela qual estava hospedado ali. A função de Si Fu tem momentos muito especiais, como ficar hospedado na residência de um discípulo que você conheceu quando ele tinha 12 anos de idade. No entanto, também traz o fardo de nunca esquecer nosso compromisso com essa mesma pessoa em cada ação.

'When I met Lucas, he had a haircut that resembled a 'bowl.' - Lucas can no longer stand hearing me say this whenever I want to anecdotally convey how long I've known him. Nonetheless, he always smiles as if it were the first time he's heard it. I was in São Paulo for a study on the 'Baat Jaam Do' domain at Moy Yat Institute, and I stayed at Lucas's residence [photo]. For me, it was genuinely moving to enter the place. The same little boy from 2008, now with his own apartment in a different city.

We tried to make the most of our stay: we studied 'Cham Kiu' in a way that his brother Daniel, who is also a member of my Kung Fu family, could benefit. For everything we did during these days in his residence, I sought to be very conscious all the time of the reason I was staying there. The role of Si Fu has very special moments, like staying at the residence of a disciple you met when he was 12 years old. However, it also carries the burden of never forgetting our commitment to that person in every action.

Ao final da noite, aproveitávamos para que Daniel e Lucas praticassem 'Chi Sau' nas dependências do prédio. Foram momentos muito divertidos, e que nós três nunca esqueceremos.

São os momentos de aventura que levaremos no coração.

At the end of the night, we took the opportunity for Daniel and Lucas to practice 'Chi Sau' in the building's premises. These were very enjoyable moments, and the three of us will never forget them. These are the moments of adventure that we will carry in our hearts.

Antes de dormirmos, eu sempre colocava algum filme na TV que sabia que Lucas e Daniel nunca assistiriam por conta própria[Risos]. Nessas oportunidades, tentava levá-los a assistir os filmes por uma 'Perspectiva Kung Fu'. Alguns dos filmes que assistimos foram 'AKIRA'[1988], 'Blade Runner'[1982] e quando meu irmão Kung Fu Roberto Viana[FOTO a esquerda] chegou para ficar hospedado também, assistimos em sua homenagem o clássico 'O Rei dos Kickboxers'[1990]. 

Before going to sleep, I always put on a movie on the TV that I knew Lucas and Daniel would never watch on their own [laughs]. On these occasions, I tried to get them to watch the movies from a 'Kung Fu perspective.' Some of the movies we watched were 'AKIRA' [1988], 'Blade Runner' [1982], and when my Kung Fu brother, Roberto Viana [PHOTO on the left], arrived to stay as well, we watched the classic 'King of Kickboxers' [1990] in his honor

Lucas e Daniel também foram recebidos com muito carinho e muita ação, pelos meus Si Suk e pelo Si Gung no Instituto Moy Yat[FOTO]. Fiz questão de levá-los até lá, para que eles pudessem ter experiências além das minhas próprias limitações, ao vivenciarem situações com Mestres do Grande Clã e praticantes iniciantes e com mais experiência. 

Lucas and Daniel were also warmly welcomed and had a lot of action from my Si Suk and Si Gung at the Moy Yat Institute [PHOTO]. I made a point of taking them there so they could have experiences beyond my own limitations, as they encountered situations with Masters from the Grand Clan Moy Yat Sang, and both beginner and more experienced practitionerss 

Enquanto Lucas trabalhava durante o dia, toda a minha atenção estava dedicada ao seu irmão, meu discípulo Daniel [à direita na foto]. Vivemos muitos momentos significativos nesse período, e um deles foi poder conhecer o Mestre Márcio Fogolin e seu discípulo Thiago Ferreira [foto acima]. Com o Mestre Márcio, tivemos uma aula de história sobre o círculo marcial no Brasil. Foi uma conversa muito rica de cerca de duas horas. Ao chegar, quando viu Daniel, Mestre Márcio o reconheceu como um dedicado discípulo, pois segundo ele, sempre o via nas fotos comigo. Essa fala do Mestre Márcio me tocou, pois me fez lembrar imediatamente do episódio no aeroporto, quando eu e meu Si Fu fomos recebidos pelo meu Si Baak Anderson alguns anos atrás.

No entanto, talvez a frase que mais me deixou orgulhoso tenha vindo do Mestre Paulo Camiz, meu Si Suk. Sendo ele um dos melhores médicos não apenas de São Paulo, mas do Brasil, ele sempre parece muito sério em suas ações e atitudes, como alguém que não desperdiça tempo. Ao final do jantar que encerrava o encontro sobre 'Baat Jaam Do', ele teria dito: 'Parabéns pelos seus discípulos, eles são formidáveis.'

'Formidável' é uma palavra que não é muito comum no dia a dia, e eu também não tenho uma relação muito próxima com o Si Suk. Sendo sério em suas ações, como intuo que seja, sabia que era um elogio sincero, e pude me sentir verdadeiramente honrado nos últimos momentos dessa viagem tão especial.

While Lucas worked during the day, all my attention was dedicated to his brother, my disciple Daniel [on the right in the photo]. We experienced many significant moments during this period, and one of them was getting to know Master Márcio Fogolin and his disciple Thiago Ferreira [photo above]. With Master Márcio, we had a history lesson about the martial arts circles in Brazil. It was a very enriching conversation lasting about two hours. Upon arrival, when he saw Daniel, Master Márcio recognized him as a dedicated disciple because, according to him, he always saw him in photos with me. This remark from Master Márcio touched me, as it immediately reminded me of the episode at the airport when my Si Fu and I were welcomed by my Si Baak Anderson.

However, perhaps the phrase that made me most proud came from Master Paulo Camiz, my Si Suk. Being one of the best doctors not only in São Paulo but also in Brazil, he always appears very serious in his actions and demeanor, like someone who doesn't waste time. At the end of the dinner that concluded the 'Baat Jaam Do' gathering, he  said to me, 'Congratulations on your disciples; they are formidable.'

'Formidable' is not a word used often in everyday language, and I don't have a very close relationship with Si Suk either. Being serious in his actions, as I assume he is, I knew it was a sincere compliment, and I felt honored in the final moments of this very special journey.

An unprecedented study of 'Baat Jaam Do' by GM Leo Imamura

 

Em 1991 e 1992, eu gostava quando chegava a época de algum aniversário da minha Tia Geny ou de algum dos seus filhos. Isso acontecia porque só fomos ter nosso primeiro VCR em casa em 1993, e até aquele momento, eram minhas únicas oportunidades de assistir às continuações dos filmes que eu gostava, mas que a TV GLOBO não exibia. Por um acaso do destino, um dos filhos dela estava estudando aviação, e por conta disso, em todas as festas acabava assistindo "TOP GUN - Ases Indomáveis" [1986]. Eu gostava tanto de "TOP GUN - Ases Indomáveis" que queria vestir minha jaquetinha do filme com lapela de lã o tempo todo. No filme, o personagem do Tom Cruise tem o apelido de "Maverick". Anos mais tarde, fui descobrir que a palavra "maverick" é uma palavra inglesa que se refere a uma pessoa que é independente e tende a fazer as coisas de forma diferente, muitas vezes desafiando as convenções estabelecidas...

In 1991 and 1992, I enjoyed it when the time of my Aunt Geny's or one of her children's birthdays arrived. This happened because we only got our first VCR at home in 1993, and up to that moment, these were my only opportunities to watch sequels of the films I liked but that brailian TV Channel GLOBO TV didn't broadcast. By a twist of fate, one of her sons was studying aviation, and because of that, at all the parties, I ended up watching 'TOP GUN ' [1986]. I liked 'TOP GUN ' so much that I wanted to wear my wool lapel jacket from the film all the time. In the movie, Tom Cruise's character is nicknamed 'Maverick.' Years later, I discovered that the word 'maverick' is an English word that refers to a person who is independent and tends to do things differently, often challenging established conventions...

Reuni-me com outros Mestres e mestrandos da Moy Yat Ving Tsun no Instituto Moy Yat em São Paulo para um estudo muito peculiar, envolvendo o "Baat Jaam Do". Nessas ocasiões, você pode me ver segurando um caderno de anotações. Você pode pensar que consegue lembrar de tudo, mas as elucidações são muito elaboradas, e uma fala ou frase mal compreendida pode mudar todo o sentido do que foi dito. O grupo era muito heterogêneo; olhando para os lados, pude ver pessoas em diferentes estágios, com diferentes objetivos, mas com um mesmo espírito: o de se disponibilizar para a experiência sem receio de mostrar sua ignorância ou má compreensão sobre algum tema. Pude ver na prática o que o Si Gung tem falado sobre "acolher a diversidade" e o quão rica ela pode ser para a Família Kung Fu. Pois mesmo em momentos tão diferentes, cada pessoa ali presente estava completamente comprometida com o todo. Isso, por si só, já era emocionante de se ver.

I gathered with other Masters and postgraduates of Moy Yat Ving Tsun at the Moy Yat Institute in São Paulo for a very unique study involving the 'Baat Jaam Do.' On these occasions, you may find me holding a notebook. You might think you can remember everything, but the elucidations are very elaborate, and a misunderstood word or phrase can change the entire meaning of what was said. The group was highly diverse; looking around, I could see people at different stages, with different pursuits, but with a common spirit: that of making oneself available for the experience without fear of revealing their ignorance or poor understanding of any topic. I witnessed in practice what Si Gung has spoken of regarding 'embracing diversity' and how rich it can be for the Kung Fu Family. Even in such different moments, each person present was entirely committed to the whole. This, in itself, was truly moving to witness.

Para mim, o grande destaque desse estudo foi o Mestre Felipe Soares [foto com óculos]. Conheci-o quando era bem jovem e em diferentes fases da sua vida. Sua coerência nos apontamentos, juntamente com sua constante boa vontade e a falta de desejo de estar certo ou de ter a última palavra, faz com que qualquer pessoa que o ouça não se sinta inadequada, e todos o ouvem com atenção. Pude testemunhar isso o tempo todo e com muitas pessoas diferentes. O Si Suk acabou por assumir uma liderança durante esse encontro, por meio de uma aclamação silenciosa.

Do meu lado, os intervalos para o almoço eram os momentos mais difíceis para mim. Geralmente eu havia me confundido em alguma demonstração na parte da manhã, e o desafio de lidar com o erro parecia querer roubar minha alma e minar a minha confiança. Às vezes, eu me pegava olhando para o nada em silêncio. Nessas horas, Si Suk Felipe costumava perguntar: "Está tudo bem?".

Após o almoço, eu caminhava até o apartamento do meu discípulo com o meu walkman ou conversava com o meu irmão Kung Fu, Roberto Viana. Quando voltava, já estava com o espírito mais leve para fazer melhor.

For me, the standout of this study was Master Felipe Soares [photo with glasses]. I met him when he was quite young and at different stages of his life. His consistency in his observations, along with a constant willingness and a lack of desire to be right or have the last word, makes anyone listening to him not feel inadequate, and all listen to him attentively. I witnessed this all the time and with many different people. Si Suk ended up assuming a leadership role during this gathering through silent acclamation.

On my part, lunch breaks were the most challenging moments for me. Typically, I had messed up a demonstration in the morning, and the challenge of dealing with the mistake seemed to want to undermine my confidence. Sometimes, I found myself gazing into nothingness in silence. In those moments, Si Suk Felipe would ask, 'Is everything alright?'

After lunch, I would walk to my disciple's apartment listening some music in my walkman or have a conversation with my Kung Fu brother, Roberto Viana. When I returned, I was in a lighter spirit to do better.

Si Gung nos levou a vislumbrar a transmissão do "Baat Jaam Do" de uma maneira que me tocou muito. De fato, era essa a razão de eu estar ali. Durante toda a minha jornada, fui muito bem orientado, seja pelo meu Si Fu ou pela Si Suk Ursula, em diferentes etapas. Por conta disso, estou sempre refletindo sobre o quanto ainda seria possível melhorar no que se refere à transmissão. Quando alguém reserva um tempo para estar comigo, presta atenção no que digo, senta comigo para jantar ou tomar café, em horários em que alguém já estaria com a família ao final do expediente, isso precisa ser respeitado.

Antes, eu pensava muito em entregar 100%, mas depois desse estudo, percebi que não é uma questão do que queremos, mas do quanto a pessoa pode receber. Apesar disso, um Si Fu também precisa ter algo para entregar. Então, era possível ver o Si Gung falando conosco a cada momento, como adultos responsáveis por um trabalho muito sério em relação à sua descendência. Apesar de ter conhecido muitos dos presentes quando ainda eram adolescentes, como o Si Suk Paulo Camiz, ele nos deixava claro a responsabilidade que o estudo envolvia. - "Nesse Domínio é onde a linguagem silenciosa encontra o seu ápice. É necessário separar o autor do efeito." - Teria dito Si Gung Leo Imamura.

Si Gung led us to envision the transmission of 'Baat Jaam Do' in a way that deeply touched me. In fact, this was the reason I was there. Throughout my journey, I was very well guided, whether by my Si Fu or Si Suk Ursula, at different stages. Because of this, I am always reflecting on how much room for improvement still exists regarding transmission. When someone sets aside time to be with you, pays attention to you, sits with you for dinner or coffee at times when someone would typically be with their family after work, that needs to be respected.

Before, I used to think a lot about giving 100%, but after this study, I realized it's not a matter of what you want, but how much the person can receive. Nonetheless, a Si Fu also needs to have something to deliver. So, you could see Si Gung speaking with us at every moment, as adults responsible for a very serious task towards their descendants. Despite having known many of those present when they were still teenagers, like Si Suk Paulo Camiz, he made it clear to us the responsibility that the study involved. - 'In this Domain is where silent language reaches its peak. It is necessary to separate the author from the effect.' - Si Gung Leo Imamura would have said.

Os desafios de ser um discípulo e também um Si Fu parecem ser muitos. Você está ali tentando equilibrar as duas funções o tempo todo. No entanto, como meu Si Fu teria dito recentemente no meu aniversário, é importante cuidar dos descendentes que nos escolheram como "Si Fu" para a sua jornada no Kung Fu, e é por isso que venho me propondo a esse desafio. Se eu não fosse um pouco "Maverick," eu não seria capaz.

Sentado ali durante o jantar no final do último dia do evento, estava bastante emocionado. Laços foram estreitados e criados não com base no que queríamos para nós, mas no que entendíamos ser importante para cuidar com responsabilidade da próxima geração.

A pizza pareceu melhor do que uma simples pizza costuma ser, e os abraços, em vez de parecerem de despedida, pude senti-los como um silencioso "até breve."

The challenges of being a disciple and also a Si Fu seem to be many. You are there trying to balance the two roles all the time. However, as my Si Fu recently mentioned on my birthday, it is important to take care of the descendants who have chosen us as their 'Si Fu' for their Kung Fu journey, and that's why I have undertaken this challenge. If you're not a bit of a 'Maverick,' you can't make it.

Sitting there during the dinner at the end of the last day of the event, I was quite moved. Bonds were strengthened and created not based on what we wanted for ourselves, but on what we understood to be important for responsibly caring for the next generation.

The pizza seemed better than a regular pizza, and the hugs, instead of feeling like farewells, I could sense them as a silent 'see you soon'.
