GM LEO, MASTER QUINTELA’S KUNG FU FAMILY, AND ME.

(GM Leo e o Daai Si Hing da Família KF do Mestre Quintela: Paternostro)
(GM Leo and the Daai Si Hing of Master Quintela´s KF Fam: Paternostro)

I took a long time to buy the ticket to Brasília, and until I sat on the bus that would take me for 20 hours from Rio de Janeiro to the capital of Brazil, I couldn't believe I was actually doing this. Deep down, I knew I should go; the reason, I do not know. It was as if I were following a script for an episode of a TV series, and if it were a series, I was dressed for the part: wearing a black and red checked flannel shirt and a navy cap that I had received from a dear Kung Fu brother, along with an old bag. I could easily have passed for some character.
Just before the bus departed, a Kung Fu brother asked me why I was doing this, as it would be a 20-hour journey. I couldn't answer. However, while philosophers seek meaning in things, as Professor François Jullien states, classical Chinese thought, which operates on a different logic from that of Western philosophers, counters the quest for meaning by emphasising the ability to perceive the evidence of circumstances. Therefore, when Si Gung said, “I think it will be worth your while to go, as it will be very intimate...” – I did not consider whether it was “true” or not, as philosophy might suggest. Once again quoting Professor François Jullien, I was more focused on the counterpart proposed by the renowned sinologist: "congruence". This refers to something that perfectly suits a given situation.
So, as evidence, I had the unwavering dedication of Grandmaster Leo Imamura, my Si Gung, in every task he undertakes to prepare and execute. There has not been an opportunity, since our more intense connection in recent years, that has not been like this. And, as a congruent element, there was Master Quintela...
(GM Leo abraça a Sra Gaby Quintela, esposa do Mestre Quintela)

Naquele momento, lembrei do Si Suk André Cardoso.

I was welcomed by the disciples of Master Quintela at the bus station. Perhaps it was the first case of "jet lag" in the same time zone on record. I was walking with Nathalia and Paternostro, but my brain seemed unable to register that I was really there. At that moment, I remembered Si Suk André Cardoso. I used to commit to trips with the Kung Fu Family and would always cancel at the last minute. On one occasion, I left Si Suk André waiting at the bus station. I was about 17 years old and liked him a lot. I had decided not to go, but without the courage to tell him, I asked my mother to speak on my behalf. Those were the high adventures days in 2001, and 23 years later, I believed I had paid that debt with this trip.
I was welcomed at Master Quintela's home with a hug and smiles from him and his wife, the dear Mrs Gaby Quintela. They both received me with great warmth, and I immediately knew that the entire subjective atmosphere created by Master Quintela, his wife, and his family would be the congruent element that validated the evidence that, in fact, as Si Gung would have said, “It would be well worth my while to have come.” How wonderful that I followed where my heart pointed.

We would be gathered there throughout the weekend for an initiative called the “Official Visit.” Over the years, I have organised this initiative several times with the best intentions, but I believe I have never truly organised the Visit as an instrument of the Programme. In my quest to better understand what it entails, I participated in the same event when it took place with Master Felipe’s Family, and now I was there in the same pursuit of understanding with Master Quintela’s Family.
The “Official Visit” is not about the Master of a person visiting his Kung Fu Family. It provides an innovative opportunity for the practitioner, linked to the Hub(School), to offer “Kung Fu Life” through the proposed activities. As Professor François Jullien states in “The Propensity of Things,” it creates opportunities to activate tendencies that allow the practitioner to reflect on the importance of Kung Fu Life. Thus, Si Gung does not expect his reception or the activities to be perfect. He helps practitioners understand the schedule as a system of variation and fully commits to experiencing whatever situations arise from the programme, always with boundless patience. His dedication to his descendants is truly inspiring.

Speaking of which, I was also able to benefit from a theme proposed by the Kung Fu Family of Master Quintela, who organised a specific study on the lists of the Fundamental Trilogy. What initially seemed like a curiosity quickly turned into almost an exclusive seminar for those present. Clearly, we were witnessing the potential of the programme being fully realised, going well beyond what had initially been proposed. I was truly moved to be experiencing that moment.
To pick up and take Si Gung home, my usual partner was Paternostro, the Daai Si Hing of Master Quintela’s Family. It was quite a journey across the city of Brasília, which I have come to appreciate. The feeling of recognising the places in Brasília is quite curious, as I have lost count of how many times I have been there in the last two years. This allowed me to have special moments of closeness with Paternostro, during which we talked about episodes in our lives that somehow coincided. When Si Gung got into the car, I took the opportunity to ask him about the details of his birthday celebration next year.
As the days drew to a close, we all gathered to talk. Master Quintela has a remarkable gift for bringing people together around him. All the members of his family stayed there that weekend. The atmosphere was harmonious throughout, and we were always laughing heartily at the life stories each person shared over pizza or a bottle of Jack Daniel’s. I felt grateful to have that opportunity.

The topic I proposed was about the life of Patriarch Leung Jaan. I chose this theme because, being from the sixth generation, I believe he was the first of the ancestors of the Moy Yat lineage to have the mission of making the Ving Tsun system publicly recognised. It was as if an enthusiast of martial arts like him had received a mission he did not ask for. How does a practitioner deal with this? How does a Si Fu prepare a disciple for such a mission? How must a Si Fu, in Leung Jaan’s case, have dealt with the pioneering spirit that his Kung Fu journey imposed upon him? All these questions, and many others, were discussed by Si Gung through a meticulously prepared slide presentation and video display for that moment (photo above). Si Gung had just completed two intense weeks in São Paulo, welcoming members of the Clan from various places, including myself. He had arrived in Brasília, spent only a few minutes with his wife, and then joined the Official Visit of Master Quintela's Family. And there he was: at the last activity on Sunday, delivering something as incredible as that.
I recalled my Kung Fu brother Fabiano Silva and how he talks about the importance of finishing his training sessions for managers in his company with spectacular finales. Well, there was a spectacular finale for the incredible experiences we had. As I watched Si Gung and his presentation, I asked myself: “What is the limit to seeking excellence in your delivery?
(Eu e o Mestre Quintela)
(Master Quintela and I)

As Si Gung would have suggested: "It was worth going."

Grand Master Leo Imamura never tires: The power of profound coherence.

"The 'Official Visit' is a tool of the Program that continues to surprise me. From the moment Si Gung steps into the city until the moment of his departure, all his focus and attention are directed towards each member of the Kung Fu Family who is receiving him. Often these visits occur after a long period of continuous activities in his schedule, but the seriousness with which Si Gung treats each participant, often demonstrating more enthusiasm than the group itself, still deeply impresses me. This attitude reminds me of the days of high adventures in the early 2000s when I saw my Si Fu with a very similar attitude that greatly inspired me. Twenty-five years later, it's important to believe when Si Gung says, 'If you don't love what you do...' - He smiles, squinting his eyes, and gestures with one hand as if to say 'forget it' and adds - '...you won't last.' And perhaps only a mixture of love and commitment justify his conduct. In addition to this, we have Master Felipe Soares, my Si Suk. This time, he seemed to have completely decided to leave the Official Visit to his students. However, this 'completely' is not something neglected; there is monitoring. There is a very strong emphasis on pre-event and post-event. Those who follow Si Gung closely may hear his voice echoing in their heads when something goes wrong, saying - 'Probably the pre-event was poorly done'.
This belief in the conditions that will favour the transwind enchants me more and more, but this still seems like a great challenge to me. I seem to have an aptitude for putting myself in situations where everything depends on me and I need to solve it with a knife at my throat. This has been happening for years, and today I need to rethink my entire way of acting. That's why this has been my second favourite instrument of the Program after the Study of the Moy Yat Lineage.

Then you could see Si Gung drawing the attention of Si Suk Felipe's students [photo] in the area reserved by dear Lenildo, for the activities of that first day. Si Gung tried to bring awareness early on during lunchtime, when he first met the super dedicated Nakazato, who, like Lenildo, is a student of Master Felipe. When one tells a story of Si Gung bringing a "portrait" of a tough person, it's something extremely anachronistic, completely frozen in time. Sometimes, I heard Si Gung say that when he was a consultant at a school, he advised teachers to observe their students during break times, to get to know them better. Since in the classroom, they would sit and behave in a more artificial environment. With that, Si Gung allowed the leaders of the Moy Fei Lap Family to recognize their own students outside Mo Gun. You could clearly see who defended others, who complained, who made excuses, who was more thoughtful, etc... All of this, interspersed with a lighter moment, like when at lunch Si Gung sought the origin of the name "Nakazato". With that, sitting there in my corner watching the whole scene, I could understand how rich it is for the "Official Visit" to be conducted by him, within the Kung Fu Dimension. I wouldn't be able to do that today, so I try to be attentive to these opportunities.

I was also excited to have the presence of my Si Hing Leonardo [on the right], as I already imagined that Roberto [on the left] would be there. My Si Hing and I disagree on almost everything, including each of our approaches to the Ving Tsun System. Perhaps our only common ground is our fondness for the "sword and sorcery" literary genre. And for some mysterious reason, we have continued to encounter each other over the past five years. Sometimes the discussions get heated, but my concern has always been feeling ill-equipped to share something at a level that he would deem worthy of integrating into his way of thinking. That's why I knew that by participating over the weekend, perhaps this potential would manifest not through me, but through the entire atmosphere that forms on such occasions. You see, there are various layers unfolding all the time; you can either enjoy it as a visitor or have a profound learning experience from the arrangement of interactions that take place. In any case, it is also admirable the courage of Master Felipe in openly allowing all the present Masters to witness all the points for improvement that his Kung Fu Family would present over those three days. This is very inspiring because his focus has never been on his image, but on the development of his students.

Elisa Wanderley.

I can't remember when I formed such a special bond with the dear co-leader of the Moy Fei Lap Family, Mrs Elisa Wanderley. She seems to hold me in high regard, not only caring for me but also defending and congratulating me. Her affection is always very touching, and this welcoming spirit is reflected in all the members of the Family who have always treated me with more respect than necessary over the years. I try to reciprocate by attending these events of the Moy Fei Lap Family with as many practitioners from my Kung Fu Family [photo] as possible. The certainty that everything that will happen will be within an attempt to immerse in the Kung Fu Dimension and the care with which my students are received greatly encourages me.

In 1996, a canonical event occurred in my life: watching the movie "Airborne" (1993). The story of a California boy who has to move to Cincinnati and, after experiencing bullying, earns everyone's respect with his roller-blade skills. I remember well the scene where the main character has a romantic encounter with his love interest in a Botanical Garden, and as they bid farewell, the background music made me think of the good feeling I had watching that film and the sadness of realizing it was ending. That remains one of my top three favourite scenes of all time. The same feeling arises when these Visits are coming to an end. I experience such a level of immersion that it's as if time stands still. And it deeply moves me to understand that this isn't a film, but that one day, suddenly, it could end. Therefore, at the end of the day, I reflected on my wish that, at some point, at least one of my students could feel something like this. I know you may not understand, but profound coherence is priceless. You feel it every moment. And that's deeply moving, believe me.

Special presence of Prof. Vanise Almeida at MYVT Meier School

Minha Si Taai é a Professora Vanise Almeid[FOTO]a.

My Si Taai is Professor Vanise Almeida[photo]. She is one of the leaders of the Grand Moy Yat Sang Clan alongside my Si Gung Leo Imamura. One of her significant specialties is her work on the programme called in portuguese 'IMC,' which stands for 'Martial Intelligence for Children.' Thanks to a suggestion from Daniel Eustáquio, one of my disciples who has been conducting a special programme with children at the Moy Yat Ving Tsun Méier, it was understood that the presence of Si Taai was crucial for this activity.
Si Gung demonstrated at various moments during the Official Visit how to make use of individuals with a more profound knowledge than his in a particular subject. This was the case the previous morning with my Si Hing Leonardo Reis when discussing the influence of artificial intelligence on the future martial arts professional, and again during Sunday's breakfast with the presence of Si Taai.

Além dela, a esposa do Mestre Nataniel Rosa, a querida Sra.

It was raining heavily that morning, and I was immersed in matters regarding the confirmation of Si Gung's later flight. Since the organization of the visit is primarily led by the practitioners themselves, the presence of Si Taai was also a surprise to me. In addition to her, Master Nataniel Rosa's wife, dear Mrs. Patricia, was also online. A long table was arranged in the middle of the practice room, and as everyone had breakfast, Si Taai spoke through a remote connection. As always, everything Si Taai said carried a sweetness in her tone of voice. At some point, I amused myself by imagining how Si Taai would be when angry - 'Difficult to imagine...' - I thought to myself. Behind her, it was also possible to see a considerable quantity of coloured pencils. This is one of her other abilities, the skill to illustrate and colour challenging our imagination when we discover that these illustrations were not made by a computer. Like the illustration she made of Si Gung for his 60th birthday in Brasília. It was astonishing to see how perfect the result was.

That morning concluded with lunch [PHOTO] before we headed to the airport. I was deeply moved when I stood up to speak at the opening of the activity with Si Taai. It was truly special to have her with us on a Sunday morning. Si Taai touched on some points that left a lasting impression on me.
On one occasion, she spoke in a simple yet profound manner about how the 'psychological' aspect influences our 'motor' abilities. This laid the foundation for our work in psychomotricity with children. However, what struck me the most was when she mentioned that the facilitator of this program needs to be capable of being a child to work with children. Her words made me reflect on my journey and how, with the increasing responsibilities, I've become a more serious individual. I couldn't help but think of the character played by Robin Williams in one of my favourite movies, 'Hook' from 1991. In it, Peter Pan decides not to return to Neverland and, growing up in London, becomes a work-consumed lawyer incapable of connecting with his children, to the point of forgetting that he was once Peter Pan.
In this way, my mind went back to the day of my Master's graduation in 2015 when Si Gung emphasized the importance of always maintaining a childlike spirit. Moreover, because every Chinese sage has the ideogram for 'child' in their name. According to him, this symbolizes the commitment to preserving the purity of someone always ready to learn

THE RETURN OF THE EAGLE:GM LEO IMAMURA IN MEIER NEIGHBORHOOD

Este artigo foi escrito enquanto tocava a música “Your Time” do Stan Bush
This article was written while was playing the song “Your Time” by Stan Bush

There is a wonderful 1990 film called "Iron and Silk." This film is based on the experiences depicted in the book by author Mark Salzman in China. The film follows Mark, portrayed by himself, who travels to China to teach English. He becomes immersed in the local culture, learns martial arts, and establishes a special connection with a Si Fu and his Chinese teacher. The narrative explores the interaction between the West and the East, highlighting the journey of self-discovery and mutual understanding between two distinct cultures. The film provides an appreciation for the richness of Chinese culture. In Brazil, for some mysterious reason, it was given the title "The Return of the Eagle."
I tought was a good moment to use it here.

We prepared to welcome my Si Gung Leo Imamura to our Moy Yat Ving Tsun School in the wild  Méier neighborhood. This marked his inaugural 'Official Visit' as part of the MYVTKF Program. Just before going to pick him up at the airport, the image of Thiago Paternostro's wife, the dear Ana, To Dai of Master Thiago Quintela from Brasília, lingered in my mind because Ana's smile at the end of two intense days, which I fortunately participated in a few months ago during the Official Visit to the Flor de Lótus MYVT School, had left an impression on me. I thought to myself that if my students could finish the third day with a semblance of happiness and energy like Ana's on that occasion, it would be an indication of a successful event.
Many of my disciples approached me, smiling, expressing how happy they were with everything that had transpired. No one showed signs of fatigue, and I firmly believe that another full day of the visit would have been possible. This account may seem too subjective, but the image of someone smiling after so many intense activities one after the other seemed impossible until I witnessed the opposite in the Master Quintela's Kung Fu Family. With that image in my heart, we reached this significant milestone.

I was also able to rely on the presence of the Masters: Fábio Gomes [photo above], Geraldo Monnerat, Diego Guadelupe,Leonardo Reis and Felipe Soares. In addition to them and their students, the wives of three of them were also present: the dear Catia Reis, Adriana Lima [photo] and Elisa Wanderley. And as if that weren't enough, Master Edgar from the Wu Lin Dao Institute was also present, representing his Master Bruno.
This photo above means a lot to me because I have always sought to be present at all ceremonies, ceremonial acts, celebrations, and other activities of the Moy Yat Lineage [and sometimes even beyond it] in Rio. I have always believed in the importance of the martial community and in making myself present. Acting with transparency, today I believe that a sincere heart has the power to attract serious people. These serious individuals enrich the scene for my students and allow for a respectful exchange, as it should be.

Deixa eles...” - Dizia Si Gung com a maior calma do mundo.

"Do you want to change location now?"-  Si Gung asked me with a smile, looking ahead, and continued-  "Now it's too late. Why didn't you see this in the pre-event?"-  He inquired, knowing that I hadn't thought about it- "Never mind... let the s... happens.... We'll it see later..."
The 'Official Visit' is not a simple visit; it is, in fact, a mysterious Strategic Instrument of the MYVTKF Program that involves all levels and natures and allows, among many things, the student to reconsider the profound coherence of his choices. To that end, Si Gung makes himself available at an almost supernatural level so that things go wrong, with a smile on his face. Si Gung gave me a very powerful example, not only with provocations like those opening the paragraph but with actions, about the importance of the Kung Fu journey being focused on the process rather than the result.
At the moment of the photo above, the location was very hot in the morning. Si Gung complained, didn't diminish his energy, and believed in the process, in which acting at the moment of prefiguration is much more important than acting all the time when the situation is already configured. "You don't have to be doing anything... Let it go... Let them be ..." - Si Gung said with the utmost calmness.

One day in 1993, I left school, and my best friend's brother, who had come to pick her up, said, "You missed the movie that was on this afternoon, Chubby! It was a martial arts film! Really cool!"-  My mum overheard and said challengingly, "I recorded it for you.
I watched "Bloodsport"[1988] more times than anyone could imagine. I never would have thought that thirty years later, I would be in my own martial arts school, hosting one of the world's greatest authorities in Ving Tsun. We were already on the third day, and it still hadn't sunk in. I simply couldn't believe that all of this was actually happening.
"Why do you practice Kung Fu?" - Si Gung asked me as we walked in a West Zone city shopping mall on Saturday. You know, sometimes we get so focused on surviving and making things happen, and when things go well, it feels unreal. So, I focused, went back to the gate of my former school called Salesiano that afternoon in 1993, and stood between my mum and Zé Mario. I tried to imagine the scene from a different angle, and when I revisited that moment from my childhood, I told myself - "In the end, we make it."-  I was truly proud and incredulous.

Witnessing Si Gung lead practices, lectures, and studies related to the Ving Tsun System is a lesson in how much someone can dedicate themselves to a purpose. Observing what he does, you understand that even if you devote your own life, as he does, it's not enough. You need the lives of others to carry on. And perhaps from there also comes his endless motivation to make one more move or say one more word, be it at 8 am or midnight during a late-night practice in a hotel.
There is a certainty that there is a significant task ahead, and there is a real hope that my Kung Fu Family can reach another level of performance. A coherent path to follow solidifies from this Official Visit. Everything else now is a matter of putting the heart into it and having the stomach for it. We get there somehow, we get there.

A coffee with Master Julio Camacho during the morning breeze

During the Official Visit of my Si Fu, we arranged a reserved breakfast for senior members of our Kung Fu Family. Although only Roberto Viana and I were with Si Fu in the photos, Claudio Teixeira and my Si Hing Leonardo Reis were also there. I had suggested a topic beforehand, but Si Fu preferred to open it up to the others who were present. Somehow, everyone had questions regarding the transmission and preservation of the Ving Tsun System in the future. Si Fu, who that morning was wearing the complete uniform of the ' Julio Camacho Institute' (an institution named after him), seemed already, by his attire alone, quite enthusiastic about the possibilities of this new phase in his career. Perhaps even a final act before his retirement. With this, Si Fu spoke with great animation about his new moment, his updated perspective on how the transmission and preservation of Ving Tsun can occur, respecting the personal characteristics of each Family Leader that may emerge from the Moy Jo Lei Ou Family. Even with a question that my Si Hing took great care to ask regarding how he envisioned leading his Family in the future, Si Fu was entirely supportive. I think I saw Si Hing being surprised, or maybe I just imagined things... Nevertheless, regardless of what was said, it truly caught my attention, the enthusiasm of Si Fu as he spoke. It was a speech full of energy and extremely optimisc. The impression in moments like these is that, regardless of how challenging the end of a cycle may have been, Si Fu's eager gaze towards the next stage is so impressively energetic that it seems as if everything were steps designed to lead to that exact point.

That breakfast made me reflect on a time when Si Fu and I once entered one of the large elevators at the CEO Offices in the Western Zone of Rio together. Si Fu leaned against an iron bar at one end of the elevator, and I leaned against the other. We remained in silence, and Si Fu began to speak to me. The topic revolved around a much-loved Kung Fu brother who had distanced himself not so amicably two years earlier but had re-established contact just minutes before during the breakfast. Since we had always been very close, Si Fu perhaps found it worthwhile to alert me. From what I believe I heard, he said the following - 'Pereira, avoid getting into any kind of conversation with him related to what happened... Refrain from drawing attention or attempting to say anything, you know?' - Si Fu looked at me and continued - 'It must not have been easy for him to re-establish contact; he must already have a lot on his mind... It's important for him to have breathing space. Avoid touching on any topic, and if you see anyone doing so, neutralize it... At the right time, I will talk to him...' I agreed and never spoke with that Kung Fu brother about anything related. However, I couldn't help but reflect on how often, even though there had been losses in various forms, Si Fu refrained from discussing the matter in order to preserve the relationship, as the person who caused the situation would not be in a position to address the issue until some time had passed

At that last Sunday's breakfast, this story kept coming back to my mind several times...
I want to conclude with a disconnected quote from what was written before, but that occurred to me now, which I heard from Si Fu when I was 17 years old and was about to give up - 'Thiago, do you know the difference between being stubborn and being persevering?' - I shook my head negatively, and he continued - 'The stubborn one tries but gives up halfway; the persevering one goes all the way...' I remember smiling, and Si Fu also smiled as he continued - 'Thiago, when we give up, we feel great relief... But when we go all the way with what we set out to do... It's an incomparable feeling...' - Si Fu said one afternoon in 2002 at the reception of the Jacarepaguá Centre. Those were the times of high adventures
