Lunch with my Master Julio Camacho

A coffee with Master Julio Camacho during the morning breeze
During the Official Visit of my Si Fu, we arranged a reserved breakfast for senior members of our Kung Fu Family. Although only Roberto Viana and I were with Si Fu in the photos, Claudio Teixeira and my Si Hing Leonardo Reis were also there. I had suggested a topic beforehand, but Si Fu preferred to open it up to the others who were present. Somehow, everyone had questions regarding the transmission and preservation of the Ving Tsun System in the future. Si Fu, who that morning was wearing the complete uniform of the ' Julio Camacho Institute' (an institution named after him), seemed already, by his attire alone, quite enthusiastic about the possibilities of this new phase in his career. Perhaps even a final act before his retirement. With this, Si Fu spoke with great animation about his new moment, his updated perspective on how the transmission and preservation of Ving Tsun can occur, respecting the personal characteristics of each Family Leader that may emerge from the Moy Jo Lei Ou Family. Even with a question that my Si Hing took great care to ask regarding how he envisioned leading his Family in the future, Si Fu was entirely supportive. I think I saw Si Hing being surprised, or maybe I just imagined things... Nevertheless, regardless of what was said, it truly caught my attention, the enthusiasm of Si Fu as he spoke. It was a speech full of energy and extremely optimisc. The impression in moments like these is that, regardless of how challenging the end of a cycle may have been, Si Fu's eager gaze towards the next stage is so impressively energetic that it seems as if everything were steps designed to lead to that exact point.
A historic visit by Master Julio Camacho: A rookies heart.

Brazil´s Father´s Day: A Tribute to Grandmaster Leo
There is a term we use in the Chinese martial circles to address that person responsible for pass down a legacy to us and guiding us through our path, being the bridge between us and the art of which he is the legatory. This term is "Si Fu" (師父).
Many people translate Si Fu (師父) as "Master". In fact, by the limitations of our Western languages, to contemplate the very rich Chinese language composed of ideograms. There is no word or phrase that ultimately reaches what the term "Si Fu" (師父) reaches.
One of the ideograms that make up this term is that of "Father" (Fu 父). You may then notice that this "Father" (父) ideogram represents something like a person holding two arms up and open, as if defending someone or something.
Brazil is a South American country that in the last thirty years has faced periods of great recession with extremely high levels of inflation. That is why 1 Real (our currency) is worth only 25 cents of American Dollar. And for all that we live and face as a third world country, certain dreams or professional goals are simply unthinkable or not so well accepted socially.
And in an almost completely unfavorable scenario, my Si Gung Leo Imamura accomplished the almost cinematic feat of maintaining a constant practice and coexistence in Kung fu Life with his mentor Si Taai Gung Moy Yat in the United States, even living in Brazil in the middle of the decade of ' 80
Si gung brought to the Brazilian martial arts scene a professionalism never before thought. Even the very possibility of living only by martial arts, when many had this activity only as a source of extra money and uncommitted , had been unprecedented.
Perhaps that is why, among other people touched by his example in those times of high adventures, was my Si Fu Julio Camacho (photo above). Not out of desire or simple vocation, but out of responsibility and commitment to the man who had been teaching him to defend his personal values. He assumes responsibility for opening the first Moy Yat Ving Tsun School in the West Zone of Rio in 1995 (PHOTO above).
Alguns lhe aconselharam a fechar as portas do Mo Gun.
Years later, when my Si Fu had to make a major adjustment in his life to keep moving on. Some advised him to close Mo Gun's doors. This Mo Gun at Barra da Tijuca (PHOTO above) was the deployment of so many others since that one from 1995. His words were firm during a Friday lunch at Barra World Mall: "Closing the Mo Gun is out of the question. I have a commitment to my Si Fu. " - This talk of Si Fu marked me deeply, because when I heard it, the words referred me to a phrase of Si Gung himself: "My parents taught me my values, but it was my Si Fu who taught me to defend them."- It seemed to me that Si Fu had also learned this lesson at that time.
Ele me pegou olhando fixamente e perguntou brincando:" Que foi? Gostou do meu casaco?" - Ele me abraçou e eu disse que sim. Ele riu e me deu três tapas fortes nas costas e me abraçou lateralmente me puxando para perto de si e rindo.
But the "Si Fu-To Dai" relationship is not just about difficult times on one side. Once I was looking at the Puma jacket that Si Gung was wearing. He caught me staring and asked jokingly, "What's up? Did you like my jacket?" - He hugged me and I said yes. He added: "Did you know your Si Fu gave it to me? We were in Hong Kong and he was going to buy one for him and one for me. I don't know if the money wasn't enough and he decided to buy just one for me. I told him not needed but he insisted. Your Si Fu is cool isn't he? "- I shook my head positively and he concluded with another question: "And have you ever given your Si Fu some nice jacket?" - I stared unanswered. He laughed and gave me three hard slaps on my back and hugged me sideways pulling me close and laughing.
- Disse-me Si Fu próximo a inauguração do Núcleo Méier.
The Si Gung we know today is a completely different person. When I met him, he was always serious. I just saw him smiling with disciples from his nearest circle. Si Fu was one of them. And I listened here and there to the stories of the great load of activities at the Julio Verne Headquartes School in the 1990s and early 2000s. Si Fu was always there at all these times, following Si Gung's example: "For many years Pereira, my signature was to be the first to arrive at an event and the last to leave. I wanted my school members to look at me and see a pillar on which they could lean. " - Si Fu told me near the opening of the MYVT Meier School
Over the years, Si Gung began to conduct his activities much more lightly. His own expression has changed and today he smiles for whatever reason. When I talked to Si Suk Rodrigo Giarola, Manager of the Moy Yat Institute recently, he said it wasn't quite like that (Laughter). Anyway, I could see my own Si Fu tuning in with this new moment of his mentor, culminating in one of the phrases he says most to me: "Pereira, life can be easy."
Speaking of "signatures", one of Si Fu's most recognized signatures in his career, was the fact that he was present for a long time in all of Si Gung's international travels accompanying him. And to this day, he participates in important trips or when his presence is required.
I remember sitting with senior members of the Moy Yat Sang Family in Si Gung's room at the former Disciple House in June 2016.
A meeting was taking place with the Masters of our institution, and my Si Fu was present. Si Gung commented that he needed someone, "Would be better two people" (he said), to accompany him to Canada for an event that would take place there.
It took three seconds of silence for all present before Si Fu said, "I will go with you, Si Fu." - The silence remained and no one else set out to go.
That scene was very striking to me, because the deeper the relationship is, the more challenging is to zeal for your Si Fu. And my Si Fu gave me a great example that afternoon. Certainly inspired by the example of his own Si Fu, my Si Gung, who never gave up to respond to a call from Si Taai Gung Moy Yat.
The relationship is close when To Dai becomes bonded not only with his Si Fu but with members of his own family. Regarding children, Si Gung would have once told Si Fu that he could consider himself a good father when he was ready in case his daughter died. Si Fu told this story laughing, saying that until today he was not and that hardly one day would be. But as a good disciple commented that he understood what Si gung meant: Si Fu explained that the logic was exactly the affectionate relationship a father (or mother) has with a child, it prevents children from experiencing certain experiences because of their fears. - "... Nothing could happen to your child, but since you are afraid of the worst happening, you neutralize his experience ..."
Alguém aparecia e me dizia: 'O Si Fu foi no cinema'. Eu ficava pensando o que aquilo queria dizer. De repente aparecia alguém do antigo 'Curso Introdutório' e eu ia lá dar a sessão.
Then, in March 2003, Si Fu was titled "Qualified Class Master" by Si Gung and Si Taai. Long before this happened, Si Fu experienced moments of questioning during his career. He would have said that to continue practicing once a week in Sao Paulo was not only expensive, but also needed to do an entire organization to leave the Jacarepaguá School for a day, and his daughter Jade who was very small. Also, he had to go by bus because the money was short. - "There were times when I called, Si Fu and I would say that I was going, asked about his schedule and when I got there there was no one. Then someone would appear and said to me: 'Si Fu went to the cinema'. I kept thinking what that meant. Suddenly someone came to some 'Introductory Course' class and I would coordenate this class. So, I used to leave Rio to practice and ended up teaching an Introductory Course session. "
Comentei no início do artigo, que este ideograma de "Pai" (父) do termo "Si Fu"(師父).
I commented at the beginning of the article that this "Father" (父) ideogram of the term "Si Fu" (師父). It symbolizes someone protecting something or someone. But if we think harder, we can understand that often a "Si Fu" (師父) will need to protect his disciple from his own influence. Like when Si Gung told Si Fu about when he might consider himself a good father, regardless of his willingness to protect his daughter. And I believe that Si Fu has taken the same logic when dealing with someone from the Family that is leaving as close as possible: "One needs to feel free to go, just so that one can return at a later time more fully. "
- "O Si Gung..."
However, at other times, a "Si Fu" (師父) will need to protect the disciple from himself. This is because the disciple will try to manipulate the relationship, even unconsciously. An attentive "Si Fu" (師父) will not allow this to happen. - "Si Gung ..." - Si Fu told me about Si Gung - "... He was actually giving me the same opportunity that Si Taai Gung Moy Yat gave him: Not to treat me different just because I lived in another State. This is one of the greatest gifts that a Si Fu can give to To Dai ... "- Si Fu concluded about his trips to Sao Paulo when he arrived there and could not find Si Gung.
Once I was driving with Si Fu at the end of another day in front of the Stadium Steak House on Avenida das Americas, and he said, "Antunes brought me here."- Si Fu then asked what my experience had been like that day. I stressed the positives of teaching and he said, "Now you have discovered the secret of Moy Yat Ving Tsun: Direct Interpersonal Mobilization." - Si Fu has spent a few minutes saying things like the fact that the process of passing down the Ving Tsun System to someone else, allows us to learn twice as much. These were words spoken by the same Si Fu of the trips to Sao Paulo when he needed to coordinate the sessions of the old Introductory Course. Showing that his experience brought him a new awareness that could even be shared with me.
So, I subscribe below all these stories I have heard. For indeed, a "Si Fu" (師父) also protects the legacy he received, provides his disciple Kung Fu Life experiences so that he knows how to do that too, so that one day he can do with his future disciple. . Just like Si Fu does to me. So, as Si Gung says, "Kung Fu cannot be taught, only learned."

How to get back to the Kung Fu Family.
When accessing the Traditional System in the Grand Clan Moy Yat Sang, the practitioner is admitted before into a Kung Fu Family. It is necessary that the person is part of a Kung Fu Family, so that he can have access to the Ving Tsun System and the knowledge that the Leader of this Family wants to share.
To be part of a Kung Fu Family, it is necessary for the person to be nominated by another Family member or invited by the Family Leader. For this admission to be formalized, a ceremonial process takes place in which the presence of this candidate, a formal presenter (Gaai Siu Yan) and the Family Leader (Si Fu) or a representative appointed by him, becomes necessary.
But how do you get back to the Kung Fu Family once you've walked away?
Si Fu was in 2009 at the Shaolin Temple in southern China. On occasion, he had the opportunity to enjoy a meal made with food grown by the local monks themselves. Unlike the temple in northern China, the Southern Shaolin Temple has no tourist bias and because of this, monks can produce their own food more peacefully.
At the time, Si Fu was served by young monks, some of them were still children. He noted that many of them had bandages on their heads.
According to the teachings by Si Taai Gung Moy Yat left for Si Gung. It is well known that under the ancestral table, which we call "Sam Toi", a sandalwood stick may appear. The Kung Fu Family will show maturity to the point that this stick is covered in dust, as this is a sign of disuse. This is because, for the monks who sleep while meditating, the Si Fu hits them with one in the head. The monks, especially younger ones wake up, however, according to Si Fu, that is not enough. Because at any moment Si Fu hits them with the stick, even when they are awake and attentive. Because like life itself, sometimes you may be living a good time, and yet it will hit you without mercy. So it is with the sandalwood staff, and so it is with life.
Over the years, we see people moving away from the Kung Fu Family for the most diverse reasons, but there is a range of reasons that does not vary much: "You see, this is not necessary. walk up to the elevator like that? "- Si Fu said when a To Dai of his stepped away after a long conversation. After witnessing people pulling away and hearing from them too many times, I came to the conclusion that most of the time it would be solved with just a conversation. But when the person appears decided, there is little to be done. However, it is forgotten that the basis of the Ving Tsun is the process of "Humanity", in which it is necessary to have two people.
Over the years, we see very special people with incredible potentials leaving the "Mo Lam". Sometimes, due to lack of time, lack of money, etc ... It turns out that we are prepared daily to find justifications in times of adversity or simply lack of interest, but we come across the figure of Si Fu. This is perhaps the only person on the face of the earth who you will not find an echo, and for this reason, in order not to have to come up with a simple solution to a problem that seemed enormous, many practitioners move away without communicating Si Fu face to face. I speak of this, because the lack of commitment to almost everything in our world is very great, and we simply disappear. But with Si Fu, this person was the same who actually received you in the Kung Fu Family in person. So, you are expected to presently say "See you soon" or "Goodbye."
I remember when my Kung Fu brother André Almeida (photo), Director of the Barra da Tijuca School, told me something that would mark me forever: "Have you noticed that almost everyone when they respond to a message begins by writing 'I can not'? I wonder if the person really 'can not' or simply does not have the courage to speak the truth ... ".
But of all sorts of "walking away" from the Family, I can say without a doubt that the worst are those in which you get "hurt" or are feeling "guilty" for something.
It is said that the Shaolin Temple was burned down because a monk would have poisoned the water of the Temple killing almost all residents, paving the way for the Qing troops to burn what was left. This story also talks about how someone with blurred vision and who accumulates bad feelings can "contaminate" people around them, but especially himself. And unfortunately, some contaminations, be they: grief, guilt, anger, etc ... They are forever if we do not take care.
If you would ask me the most important thing I have done in my whole Ving Tsun career, I would say without a doubt that it was when I rented one of the Mo Gun in Barra neighborhood in my name for Si Fu. Perhaps for you to read, it is not clear how much this meant to me, but I could feel, in an adverse moment, really useful to the Kung Fu Family.
Years before, walking by the Downtown Shopping Mall, Si Fu would have said, "... The secret is to have a big heart and a bad memory ..."- If he really had not acted like this with me, I would not have had the chance to develop myself from a fool to a man and contribute to the Kung Fu Family, as I felt myself doing at that moment.
A intensidade? Bem, a circunstância vai dizer.
Going back to the Kung Fu Family is simply a matter of decision. Understand the need to cleanse the heart of fears, sorrows or whatever has made you turn away. Maybe, when you come back, you'll find that things have changed a bit, but not enough to leave you out. However, it is important to know that the Kung Fu Family is not a congregational group, it is a "Family of War" and you will be "beaten" one hour or another. The intensity? Well, the circumstance will tell. The Kung Fu Family and Si Fu may not be the way you want them to be, but maybe it's better that way, because who knows, is your only chance of not finding echo to your fears.
