JACKIE CHAN 66th BIRTHDAY : HOW HE CHANGED THE GAME FOREVER

Dentre esses jovens, estava eu.

On the 7th of April, Chinese cinema legend Jackie Chan turned 66 years old. And many of the younger practitioners who sought out the martial arts, did so because they had contact with some of Jackie Chan's cinematographic works.
Among these young people, I was there. After watching the movie "Drunken Master 2" (1994), my passion for Tae Kwon Do started to give space to Chinese martial arts. So, I started a tireless search for video stores in the Rocha Miranda neighborhood(north zzone of Rio), looking for "lost" films starring Jackie Chan ...

Below, the trailer for "Drunken Master 2":

This film was important for Hong Kong cinema, not only because of the care with regard to the choreography. Some of those coregraphies took up to four months to complete. But what was really remarkable about this film was the historic meeting between Jackie Chan and Lau Kar Leung ...
(Jackie Chan on the set of "Drunken Master 2" with the legend Lau Kar Leung)

When Bruce Lee passed away, Hong Kong cinema fell into decline with the martial arts genre, as producers were looking for a replacement at any cost. After several unsuccessful attempts, Jackie Chan gives up his career and moves to Australia, where he starts doing dishwashing and other jobs to survive.

Parallel to this, Lau Kar Leung (28 July 1934 - 25 June 2013), who is a Si Fu of Hung Ga Style and an experienced choreographer of martial arts films, would be the person responsible for a historic turn in Hong Kong cinema: He idealized and directed the classic "The Spiritual Boxer (1975)", which for the first time combined the genre of martial arts with comedy.

[Yuen Woo Ping, Simon Yuen e Jackie Chan, on the set of "Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow" (1978)]

This new genre, mixing comedy and martial arts, allowed cinema genius Yuen Woo Ping (pictured left) to get the best out of Jackie Chan. No longer trying to turn him into a new Bruce Lee, but by joining him with his own father the actor Simon Yuen (center). Yuen Woo Ping launched Jackie Chan in the genre that would enshrine him across the planet as one of the greatest action heroes of all time.
Below is the trailer for this film that changed the history of Hong Kong cinema and Jackie Chan's life:

Jackie Chan achieved international recognition with the first "Drunken Master" in the 70s, in which he presents in a simply genius way, a martial art that was configured from the moment that its practitioner was drunk. Once again Yuen Woo Ping (creator of the project), brought Jackie Chan and his father Simon Yuen playing the role of Master and Disciple, in addition to other actors.

In the early 1980s, Jackie Chan skyrocketed in the Asian market, but was unable to achieve a projection that would take him to Hollywood. He even made some unsuccessful attempts, but the producers' restrictions on what he could and could not do on the scene, or the fact of fitting him into a stereotype, hampered that first attempt. It was then that Jackie Chan produced and acted what is considered the greatest action film in the history of world cinema and the most plagiarized film according to the Guinness Book: "Police Story".

The film was given a standing ovation at the Cannes festival and even then, some people wondered if Jackie Chan only knew how to make action films. It was then that he produced a highly awarded film a few years later, mainly for the brilliant direction of Jackie Chan with a series of sequential plans and for the wonderful work of photography of the film: "Miracles"!

The film featured some renowned Hong Kong film actors, but the talented Anita Mui (Hong Kong, October 10, 1963 - Hong Kong, December 30, 2003), who was a talented singer and actress and who made some partnerships with Jackie Chan and who unfortunately passed away very early. In the picture above, she appears in navy blue coat alongside Jackie Chan.

The 66 years old, Jackie Chan changed the history of cinema in his country, made the long-awaited worldwide success starring the "Rush Hour" franchise (Rush Hour, 1998) and inspires martial arts practitioners and enthusiasts around the world.

The message that remains is that of the constant search for excellence, that of perseverance in search of a dream, and that we will never know how much our actions can forever mark the lives of people we don't even know!

4 YEARS OF MOY FAT LEI FAMILY

(The day wich I hang the Jiu Paai on the wall)

Não é incomum alguém me perguntar: "Ei!

Next April 9th we will celebrate the first four years of the Kung Fu Family, which I am the leader of. And it couldn't be better: I can't remember a time when different members interacted as much as they do now and so positively.
So, out of the many possibilities that we imagine for this year's celebration, we would never imagine the harmony with which we would find ourselves at that moment ...

It is not uncommon for someone to ask me, "Hey! So what? How long does it take to become a Master?" This is a question that I always try to answer in a way that helps the person to reflect on his own question. However, I believe that more important than asking about "When" is thinking about "How" ....

On one of his trips accompanying Si Gung, Si Fu said that when he was in NY, he expected Si Gung to talk to Si Baak Gung William Moy (photo) in his office. Suddenly Si Gung would have opened the door and said, "Julio, Si Baak wants to give you something." - Si Fu received a frame with the legendary General Guan Yu, Zhang fei and Liu Bei as a gift.
Si Fu never told me what was said about the moment recorded in the photo above.

Today my Kung Fu family's Mo Gun has this frame (PHOTO) on one of its walls. This was because at the end of 2016, during a Traditional Ceremony where some of my To Dai accessed the Cham Kiu Domain. Si Fu surprised me giving me this frame. And on that occasion he spoke about the figure of General Guan Yu representing "loyalty" in Chinese culture. - "And because of that, I wanted to give it to you."
(o famoso quadro no nosso Mo Gun)
(the famous frame in our Mo Gun)

How to become a Master? Be loyal to your Si Fu. It is essential that you develop a feeling of loyalty above anything, and to be able to renew this process when you are authorized to open your own Kung Fu Family yourself.
We realized then that one of the biggest challenges in the trajectory of a Ving Tsun practitioner is to stay together. You see that To Dai very close to a Si Fu, that a while later nobody ever sees him again. Dont be that guy.

If you have read this far, you may be wondering why I was talking about my relationship with my Si Fu on some article about my Kung Fu Family's next birthday . Well, in an alternative reality, I would probably not only be anxious about the uncertainty of the future that has been amplified in recent weeks, but maybe I was investing my time to be scared and spread it on social networks.
As a disciple of my Si Fu, I learned in a mysterious way, to sincerely feel this being one of the best moments of my Family and my career. In some way, this is expressed by the different ability to connect heart to heart, to the point of being able to resinify my view of the world around me.

"BIU GWAAN" DEMONSTRATION AND UNIQUE CHANCE

When I started practicing Ving Tsun, I thought all I wanted to do was learn to practice with the "wooden dummy" (Muk Yan Jong). However, when I started the "Luk Din Bun Gwaan" Domain, I realized that this would be my favorite Domain in the Ving Tsun System.
Over the years, I began to perceive the practice with weapons like the "Ving Tsun Gwaan" (Ving Tsun staff) as a process of transcending the understanding of our own bodies.
The "Gwaan" allows you to easily see how much a small mistake when on guard can cost you. Because it is thin, any mistake in posture on guard position makes you a huge target.

Then it was around this time that I began to understand that we should not choose justifications for our mistakes. After all, in a case of life or death, after you die. Knowing if it was someone else's fault will not bring you back to life.
Beyond that consideration, a more powerful one touched me a lot in this process: The idea that when shooting with Gwaan (Biu Gwaan) it is good to know what you are doing and to hit the target. After all, everything you have generated from conditions to do the "Biu Gwaan", you must converge at the tip of the Gwaan in the moment you hit the target. If you make a mistake, well ... You ´re done. Because different from the free hands logic, depending on which instrument(weapon) your opponent is using, whether he will be hands free or not, and depending on your level of attention in the handling of the staff at the end of the shot. You may not have a second chance.

So you know what? Life is like that too. Sometimes we only have one chance at all. Spend your chance, and see what happens. So because of that, I began to understand the importance of not letting my guard down. Because being on guard is not just a matter of taking a position with your hands or a weapon like the "Gwaan". It is a state of mind. And who has no "fighting spirit" can not survive long without being under protection.

Many of my "Luk Din Bun Gwaan" sessions were attended by Si Suk Diego Guadelupe. At the time this video was filmed, we were alone at Mo Gun, and he decided to record it. I realize that the movement of "Biu Gwaan" (Shot) was there, but not the proper spirit.

What is written in the "Sam Wai" (神位) of a Ving Tsun school?

Usually when we arrive in a Certified School of Moy Yat Ving Tsun Martial Intelligence, we come across some frammes hanging a certain point of the site side by side. These pictures have strange characters in red color with white background or in white color with red background. And as we begin to frequent this place we call "Mo Gun," we naturally hear from different people, what those frames mean.
These frames are called "Sam Wai".
(Jaqueline Tergolina e Juliana Trugano, colocam os "Sam Wai" do Mo Gun da Família Moy Fat Lei)
(Jaqueline Tergolina and Juliana Trugano, hang "Sam Wai" of the  Mo Gun of Moy Fat Lei Family)

"Sam Wai" (神位), also known as "Ancestral Plaques", are wooden frames that are arranged in a room or wall of any Grand Clan Moy Yat Sang's Mo Gun , called "Jing Tong".

In the words of Si Gung Leo Imamura on the "Sam Wai" we have: "... In 1967, Grand Master Moy Yat 梅 逸 recorded in stone the genealogy of our lineage with the validation of Patriarch Ip Man 葉 問. When I entered the Moy Yat 梅 Family in 1987, the ancestor plaques (san wai 神位) were already represented by the traditional seals. "
(Com Si Fu e Si Suk Leo Mordente)
(With Si Fu and Si Suk Leo Mordente)

Thanks to the true genius Master Leonardo Mordente, a unique person I met in 2007 while accompanying my Si Fu, I was able to have a greater knowledge about the stone seals made by Si Taai Gung in 2015.
(Meu irmão Kung Fu Luciano "Lucky" Freitas, pinta

(My Kung Fu brother Luciano "Lucky" Freitas, paints
the first Sam Wai of the MYVT Meier School in 2011)

1- Yim Ving Tsun
2- Leung Bok To yan
3- Wong Wa Bo yan
4- Leung Laan Gwai yan
5- Leung Yi Tai
6- Leung Jaan
7- Chan Wa Sun yan
8- Ip Man jung si

When we look at the frames from right to left in any Mo Gun of the Grand Clan Moy Yat Sang, we will find the following written:

1- Yim Ving Tsun
2- Leung Bok To yan
3- Wong Wa Bo yan
4- Leung Laan Gwai yan
5- Leung Yi Tai
6- Leung Jaan
7- Chan Wa Sun yan
8- Ip Man jung si

(Jing Tong da Família Moy Fat Lei do Clã Moy Jo Lei Ou)
(Jing Tong of the Moy Fat Lei Fmaily from the Moy Jo Lei Ou Clan)

Como no próprio caso do Patriarca Ip Man.

It is curious to list these names as there are few people who look closely at the "Sam Wai" of their Mo Gun, and note that there are more ideograms in a single frame than the name of the person who is there. As in the case of Patriarch Ip Man, in which even his name having only two ideograms (葉 問), there are still two others, which we now know to be "Jung Si" (宗師). which is a term which may refer to something like "The Si Fu of the Si Fu"( The secondo "Si Fu" on plural)

(With Masters Anderson Maia and Leonardo Mordente,
holding a poster with high resolution photos of the inscribed stone seals by Patriarch Moy Yat)

When the brilliant Master Leonardo Mordente, my Si Suk, spoke about making stamps at the opening event of the Official Visit of Si Gung in the year 2015, he said: "... The amount of characters to be engraved at the base of the stone has a direct influence on the composition of the seal and, consequently, on the aesthetic effect of the stamp ... "
When we take the seal of Wong Wa Bo, although the name has only three ideograms (黃華 寶), the following is written: "黃華 寶 印 Wong Wa Bo yan (Seal of Wong Wa Bo).
According to Si Suk Leonardo Mordente, when one opts for a four-character seal, the ideal would be to add a word, an usual practice in the art of seals. The most common word as an addition option is yan 印, "seal." Therefore we have: "黃華 寶 印 Wong Wa Bo yan (Wong Wa Bo Seal)". In the third "Sam Wai" from right to left.As in the cases of Leung Bok To, Leung Laan Gwaai and Chan Wa Shun, the same thing happens.

(The best actor in terms of technical performance of martial arts films and soap operas, the brilliant Yuen Biao, is also Leung Jaan's greatest performer in Chinese movies and TV soap operas.)

For me, my favorite "Sam Wai" is Patriarch Leung Jaan's. This happens because when we look at the seal, we realize that it is a seal with only two characters as we see in the scheme below:

Since the ideograms used for the making of stone seals are archaic, they tend to confuse the vision somewhat by appearing to be more ideograms than they really are. However, Leung Jaan's mysterious seal, much more than hidden ideograms, does hold images:

The Leung Jaan seal, which appears in the center of the photo above, has four animals surrounding the ancestor's name. They are: A tiger on the right, a dragon on the left, a phoenix above and a tortoise below.
Segundo Patricia Welch (Chinese Arts - A Guide of Motifs and Imaginary, 2008. Ed.

According to Patricia Welch (Chinese Arts - A Guide of Motifs and Imaginary, 2008. Ed. Tuttle), "directions" are usually associated with animals since the Neolithic era by chinese pelos chineses, when each of the four quadrants of the sky were represented by an associated animal with one season of the year: The Fenix, The Tiger, The dragon and the turtle.

A vontade gera expectativa e a expectativa gera frustração..."

I want to close this article, with a remarkable story about "Sam Wai" I heard from Si Fu, when on the occasion of his 1998 US trip (PHOTO) accompanying Si Gung. Si Fu had the mission to prepare all the "Sam Wai", in wood as we see in the photo.
Si Fu tells this story always with satisfaction, about the fact that he went to the US and spent so much time in the making of these.
For me, there's the lesson as to when, on such a journey, our expectation is too high, and such a task is presented to us. For Si Fu was a great opportunity, but for others, it could be a great "waste of time". On expectations, Si Fu says: "... Desire generates expectation and expectation generates frustration ..."

THE KUNG FU AND THE VIDEO-GAMES

(Com Si Fu em seu aniversário de 2018)
(With Si Fu on his 2018 birthday)

I was in the car with Si Fu late one morning towards his house. Si Fu asked me a few questions related to a certain topic, and one of those questions was: "This person whom you call 'boy' is how old?" - I answered without being sure: "I think he is around 30 years old" - I could not remember the last time Si Fu Laugh with such a will:" 30 Pereira? Man ... "- He lost his speech, and he had an open smile and with open arms on the seat, almost indignant that I had used the word 'boy' .- "Pereira, do you know what Napoleon was 30 years old?" - I asked - "No" - I answered - "Pereira someone who is 30 years old, is no longer a 'boy'. When Napoleon  was 30 years old, he was writing his biography. "

I lived one of the "golden ages" of video games. Those who had more conditions possessed a Sega Genesis or a Super Nintendo (although  never saw one of this one in person before 1993). I remember as if it was today, when in the old store called "Luzes Shop" of Madureira Mall, I saw an agglomeration around a TV in the area of electronics. It was 1991, and "Sonic-The Hedgehog" had just released, and we just did not believe in the speed with which the blue hedgehog moved! Two years later, we wanted anyway a Sonic shirt that came with Master System III.
As I can not remember, the first time I played "Street Fighter II"and I chose the character "Blanka". On losing, a random boy said, "Little dude, always choose red or white character!" - referring to Ken and Ryu

Devido as nossas condições financeiras, o meu pai pôde me dar apenas um "Dynavision II"(FOTO).
Meus jogos favoritos eram: "Castlevania Jr", "Ducktales", "The Legend of Kage", "Trojan", "Mega Man 3", "Wrestlemania", e muitos outros...

(With Si Fu, at dinner in which the trip to Europe was decided still in 2018)

To live with Si Fu is to be sure that at the first opportunity, some paradigm of yours will be broken. I remember telling him, how important it was to my grandfather, that I could read one day Jules Verne's "Twenty Thousand Leagues Underwater" at some point. I told Si Fu, that my grandfather said that the experience of reading that book was so shocking that he even lost his breath. I told Si Fu that I had been frustrated because I had not found anything too much to read, to the point of "losing my breath".
Walking and smiling Si Fu said that the impact my grandfather felt was due to the time when he lived: "Thiago, at the time the experience of reading a book, was something unique. Maybe it's the same thing that you feel when you play these games that you like! "- Si Fu smiled and I knew he would make some curious comment: -" Can you imagine how 'silly' your grandfather would find you if he saw you in his thirties playing video games? "-  I laughed and so did he. Still I defended myself: "But Si Fu, most people my age these days play video game!"- With his hands in his pockets he looked at me laughing and shaking his head as if to say, "Seriously?" - And he said: "Pereira, by the standards of who was thirty years old when your grandfather was thirty, who plays video game at that age would be a silly boy."-  I smiled without knowing where he wanted to go, and he went on: "In the same way, that in his day, maybe your great-grandfather would find him a fool to read Jules Verne instead of going to work."- Si Fu completed: "Each era has its paradigm. It is up to you not to live hostage of it."

(Com Si Fu em uma foto oficial)
(With Si Fu in an official photo)

Some years ago, Si Fu talked about ethics, and suggested three questions for when a decision needed to be made: "Do I want to?", "Can I?" and "I should?" . "If the answer to those three questions is 'yes,' then you do it." - Said he.
I confess, I do not remember the last time I played my video game. Whenever I wanto to play it, I catch myself thinking of everything else I might be doing. I think about these three questions, and I always find that there is something more important to be done. Not necessarily work, but who knows, go out to run shirtless while it rains. Is there anything better? My brother Kung Fu Roberto Viana would say yes (laughs).

(I recorded my Dai Ji Keith Markus from when we went to get Si Mo at the airport)

I remember at the same time, when I was walking in a mall with Si Fu, and he asked me about the reason people wear superhero clothes these days: "I think deep down, everything that the hero represents, the clothes, is the only thing a person can feel is equal to him. "
These constant reflections proposed by Si Fu regarding my positioning and how I use my time wisely, help me to reconstruct old patterns. And resignify every action, living a life more according to my personal values.

(With Si Fu on his first visit to the new Mo Gun of my KF Family)

Ele falou me abraçando:"Agora você precisa 'virar homem'."

I recently complained to Si Fu about sports journalism and about the players as well. I told him about an interview with Leandro "fried fish", former right-back of Flameng soccer team and the best right back in history. And about his posture in this interview. I talked to Si Fu that it seemed that the players and journalists are more "silly", more "childish". We then began a conversation about this whole scenario. Si Fu talked about the moment we are living and the space that exists to be "silly." And curiously, shortly after the burial of my father last year, instead of saying that he was sorry or that he gave me his condolences. He said hugging me: "Now you need to 'become a man.'"

(Playing the remake of "Double Dragon" in my old residence on a Saturday afternoon)

So the question is not exactly about playing or not playing video games. But in the capacity that "Kung Fu Life" has to make us think beyond what is standard in a particular moment in the world. And to reflect, as we are still so "dumb" even with the age that we have. And as historical figures of the same age, they had already accomplished so many great deeds.

Kung Fu family at my father's funeral.

It is difficult to talk about practice and dedication to the development of Kung Fu. One should simply venture through this challenging world to have a chance to discover. And voluntarily, day after day. Living the simplest situations as the most complex too, which require you to review how big your comfort zone is.
I had complete the last stage to restart everything from zero . After overcoming an epic debit to the bank, that day promised! I enjoyed a windy Morning in the Méier neighborhood, spent much of my day with my To Dai Thiago Quental , Christiana Chagas and João Bittencourt, and I thought it would be a good idea to eat my so dear "Number 13" at Burger King.
There I was, following the "Fat (法)" from my name, eating the same hamburger as ever, with the same iced tea ever when I get a message from my mom that my father had suffered an accident.

My first reaction was as strangely as possible. I smiled involuntarily, because it took me a few seconds to believe that another challenging situation was present. I was living my illusion as I spent the day celebrating the recent victories and I could not believe that I would have to enter into a new fight.
What scared me most was my calm. And already at the door of the hospital, upon receiving the news of my father´s death, immediately all my movements turned to resolve the "loose ends" that I knew they would present themselves due to this unexpected demise.
(Thats me and Jade in 2011, in the end of one of the funiest days of our lives)

Si Fu once said that Julia, his youngest daughter had been injured, and somehow this was related to Jade, his eldest daughter. Jade started to cry as Si Fu prepared to take Julia to the doctor. He would have told Jade at that moment, that crying would not help. In fact it would only disturb, because the attention that should be given to Julia, would have to be shared with her. And if she really cared, she needed to support.
This story came from I do not know where like a lightning bolt in my head, and at the same moment I decided that I would only be sad when it was time to be sad: "Now it is important to take care of who is still alive" - Si Fu said when my grandfather died. it should be not different now.

Another time, on a Saturday morning in 2002. The mother of the beloved and legendary Si Suk André Cardoso (photo), underwent an emergency brain surgery just while we prepared to leave the Mo Gun for a football match that Si Suk was at the front organizing. Even in a situation like this, he called the Mo Gun and asked if everything was under control.
That was such a strong example that it struck me deeply. And I was able to summon this memory at that moment from inside the hospital.
I called my disciple Keith Markus and advised him on how to organize the activities of the Mo Gun the day after.
Eram muitas coisas a serem organizadas.

I did not sleep that night, I could not. There were many things to be organized. Among them, a simple homage to my father in the form of a drawing (photo above). I did not want him to be buried as my grandfather was on a dirt floor with no symbol. So I did a drawing of him in the early '80s. And I wrote above: "Yat Doi Fu Can" (一代 父親) reads something like "Yah Doui Fuh Tsahn" or "The best father of his generation". This was a pun on "Yat Doi Chung Si" (一代 宗正) [Click HERE to learn more about the terms].
Si Fu says you can do anything with art.
(Si Fu e sua filha Jade)
(Si Fu and his daughter Jade)

E numa ocasião me vi três dias sem dormir. Apesar disso me sentia bem e disposto.

In the days that followed I did not sleep much. I had more activities and tasks than time. And on one occasion I saw myself for three days without sleep. Despite this I felt good and willing. I remembered the time when years and years ago, Jade was sick and Si Fu said in the Mo Gun that he did not sleep for four nights. "But you know something? I'm fine." - He said .
This was also a strong example so that I could rely on the strength I knew I had to keep solving things without stopping.
(Abraço de Si Fu )
(Si Fu hugs me after my father´s funeral)

A few days after the funeral, I would sit at the table with relatives, and at one point I almost cried but I held back my tears. An aunt said, "You can cry Thiago." (laughs).
I think in the end, we who live in the "Mo Lam" (武林) and especially us who have access to the Siu Nim Tau. We have developed a strange capacity to keep the Center Line and more than that: We identify at every moment, what is priority and what is urgencies. And at that moment, my priority was not crying. It was to resume the Center Line as soon as possible. And so it has been in the last month.

Me tocou muito a presença massiva dos membros do Grande Clã Moy Yat Sang.

I was very touched by the massive presence of members of the Grand Clan Moy Yat Sang. The emblematic presence of To Dai and Dai Ji of my Kung Fu Family, my Kung Fu brothers, my Si Suk and of course my Si Fu.
Of course my friends and relatives supported me and continue to support me day after day. But even because of the nature of this page, I focus on this moment in the Kung Fu Family and especially in Si Fu.
It is in moments like this that I see, for example, the responsibility that we should have with what we want. I always wanted to be a great fighter, and on a Friday like that, I clearly saw that my life is a succession of uninterrupted fights. Come to think of it, the life of who is different from that? Perhaps the difference lies in the fact that as martial artists, we are more sensitive to perceive these challenges second by second.
And finally, I'm still surprised by this exotic skill transmitted to me by Si Fu, to make a learning of any event that affects me.
