Why does GM Leo Imamura not give up?

Me senti em casa.

There is a viaduct that connects a region of Rio known as "Samba´s masters land" to the Rocha Miranda wild neighborhood. When I drive up that viaduct, for a few seconds I can see much of the neighborhood where I grew up, and I feel at home. For a brief moment, life's problems seem to disappear. Recently, however, the Rocha Miranda has become more dangerous, my best friend has many commitments and hasn't had time, and even the restaurant where we used to have Sunday lunches has closed.
Perhaps that's why, sitting with the sunlight in my eyes at a table in Manhattan Bakery on Friday morning, when I saw Si Gung walking towards us, where my disciple Lucas and I were waiting, I had a feeling similar to when I drive over that viaduct towards Rocha Miranda neighborhood. I felt at home right there. I walked up to the door to greet Si Gung and fetch his suitcase; he arrived with a smile. I didn't know what time he had gone to bed or how tired he was, but he seemed happy to see us. Once he sat down, I remembered I hadn't even taken our orders yet, but he didn't admonish me for it. His mere presence was enough to elevate our attention to another level. Without sermons, without lessons, without discussing anything unrelated to our work, Si Gung swiftly transported us to the "Kung Fu Dimension". His breakfast ended quickly, but he showed no intention of leaving. He continued to discuss pivotal and pertinent matters about our present and future, clearly indicating through his demeanor that he wasn't there just to eat. I've heard someone said that "home is where the heart is."

We started the morning with a true gift, which was the opportunity to observe Si Gung leading a class. Watching Si Gung work makes you feel ashamed of your work ethic in passing down the Ving Tsun System (whichever it may be). The level of attention to detail and his way of encouraging excellence (without forcing it) compel those watching to remember not to give any less effort than he does in studying the System. In fact, I was deeply moved to see him rise to provide details about the "Siu Nim Tau" (photo above) in the manner he did. There were three masters present, and yet he made a point of doing so. It was something very special.

Então, você poderia me ver ali pensando: "Ei!

In moments like these, I naturally empty my heart regarding everything I think I know, and I listen to Si Gung's guidance as if hearing about "Cham Kiu" for the first time. From the order of the tutors to the orientations, everything is done with great care, coherence, and zeal. You don't feel exposed and, by not fearing "losing face", you can let the eternal apprentice within take the lead. Today, I heard Si Gung say, "The time that the disciple... that the practitioner makes available... it needs to be worth its weight in gold to us..." And indeed, he does this every second. So you could see me there thinking, "Hey! Let me pay attention to this so I don't forget..."

Si Gung takes advantage of his visits to São Paulo to spend time with his parents and resolve personal matters with them. He also opens up his life so that we can be present in these moments. "So, Pereira? Where do you want to have lunch today?" he asked, as he usually does. Due to my "Korea phase," inspired by the cultural richness I've been learning from my dear friend Choi Ki Hon from São Paulo, I suggested once again a Korean restaurant. And there we all were! During the journey, I was able to talk with Si Gung about martial arts books and Chinese culture. Si Gung typically relates the subject to some theme that directs the safeguarding of the Ving Tsun System and how to better understand this mission. This constantly helps us to not forget our mission and to leave the amenities for another time.

We returned to Moy Yat Institute where we talked, and he once again encouraged me to dedicate myself more to developing my own understanding of things. Shortly after, I attended a Biu Ji class of his son Lukas Imamura. Afterwards, we went to the barber shop and discussed more about the current state of the Clan on the way. Finally, when we returned, Sensei Ricardo Leite and Edson, who is a practitioner in the Ving Tsun Experience Programme (photo top right), arrived soon after. My disciple Lucas also arrived (photo top left), and there was Si Gung again! The same energy he showed when he arrived at the bakery at 8 a.m. And there I wondered: "Why doesn't Si Gung give up?" - It's a valid question, considering all the challenges his position also brings. However, earlier today he had also spoken to me at the same bakery: "The difference between us is that we don't work... We love what we do. A person works at something they don't like five days a week and needs to unwind on the weekend; when the difference between working days and rest days becomes too disproportionate, they take holidays. We don't take holidays... We love what we do..."

Eu nunca desisti.

Watching Si Gung work today once again was deeply inspiring. You know, I managed to be fully present in every moment, even later when he gave an interview to Sensei Ricardo Leite, until we said goodbye shortly before 1 a.m. The fleeting feeling I get when I drive over the viaduct connecting the neighborhoods of Madureira(Samba´s masters land) to Rocha Miranda(my childhood neighborhood) lasted the entire day today. There were no issues, nothing outside mattered; there was only the renewed enchantment with the System I chose to study 25 years ago. I understand that for you, the reader, you may not fully grasp what I'm trying to describe. However, Si Gung also said in his interview today: "...Symbols exist to reach certain levels of consciousness that simple description cannot reach. Hence the difference between prose and poetry..."
]I have never given up.

"SIU NIM TAU"! STUDYING EVERYTHING FROM THE BEGINNING!

Lembro do meu pai me alertar dizendo: "...

My grandfather used to dedicate Sunday afternoons to practice some skill. Sometimes, he would cook all afternoon, other times he would fix some eletronic, dirtying the whole house with grease. While my grandmother used cornmeal in everything she cooked, my grandfather seemed to be the greatest grease enthusiast that ever lived. I was a child, but I can remember lying down watching TV and sometimes looking at him, struggling to see his electronics books. He only stopped when he succeeded, all while drinking liters and liters of coffee.
That bothered me; sometimes, I wished my grandfather would watch something on TV, but he was completely immersed. Finally, between 1991 and 1992, my video game controller stopped working. It was a 'Dynavision 2' controller, a black market version of the Nintendo 8bits. I thought about taking it immediately to my grandfather. I remember my father warning me, saying, "...Your grandfather is going to break this thing, and this video game was expensive!"- I did not care,  I took the controller anyway.
Upon arriving, my grandfather stopped watching the movie, took the controller, and examined it from top to bottom. Without warning, he got up, heated a solder on the kitchen stove, amid protests from my grandmother, opened the controller, soldered a part of the circuit, and it started working again. It seemed like magic... That was a magical moment with my grandfather.

Si Gung asked me if I wanted to study something special on this trip; I replied yes. I was interested in understanding better how to work on the martial aspect in "Siu Nim Tau," in a way that the practitioner could feel the difference more clearly between the Ving Tsun Experience Program and the Traditional System. Si Suk Felipe and Quintela immediately supported the idea, and Si Gung seemed enthusiastic about undertaking this work. You then stand there, trying to open your heart to relearn something you practiced when you were 15 years old. Si Gung reached a very interesting level of understanding of the components of Siu Nim Tau, working step by step. For me, with a nature more like "Biu Ji," it seems quite challenging. However, I realized that despite my motor difficulties, the mental part was well. I always prepare myself a lot for these moments internally. I tell myself that I have no time to waste, that I cannot hinder those trying to help me, and that it's not for me but for my students. Sometimes, even so, I can't. I am a bit slow, but I never give up.

O importante é continuar no jogo.

Receiving fully (Jun Dak 盡 得) means that a disciple has completely understood the kuen sut 拳術 and not just the kuen faat 拳法. That's why "Jun 盡" ("fully") was used to describe Patriarch Ip Man 葉問's process in our Genealogical Study of the Moy Yat Lineage. So, it's no use someone handing you something if you're not able to receive or comprehend it. This understanding may come much later, or never, if there's no guidance.
I have dedicated myself to these and many other study moments, with the spirit of a beginner, to understand what I missed due to my young age, immaturity, or lack of conditions. Only then do I believe I have the possibility to honor in the best way possible what my Si Fu Julio Camacho offered me, which was the opportunity to inaugurate my Kung Fu Family and continue the legacy of our lineage for the next generations.
I simply don't care; I may be doing it with the most beginner person of all, or with Si Gung in person. I decided that I would become a better Si Fu and a better professional, and there's no way to go through that without making mistakes. Sometimes it's not your day. Sometimes you're just not cut out for it. The important thing is to keep in the game.

"...Esses momentos, ninguém vê. Eles não aparecem, então ninguém fica sabendo. Domingo à tarde e vocês estão aqui..." - Teria dito Si Gung.
Eu amo a minha vida.

"...These moments, no one sees. They don't appear, so no one finds out. Sunday afternoon, and you are here..." - Si Gung would have said. It was already the second day of practicing Siu Nim Tau, and I still hadn't gathered the conditions to go beyond Lap Sau [photo above] in this recap that I am proposing to myself. I knew that if I got too serious, I would make even more mistakes. So, I remembered my grandfather, I remembered Sunday afternoons in Rocha Miranda wild neighborhood, and introspective, that experience touched me a lot because I thought of the simple pleasure my grandfather had in studying each step to fix an eletronic. He didn't seem obsessed to achieve like I was; he kept trying to see a snippet from a page in his electronics books until he understood what was needed. This dedication to studying steps, assembling and disassembling devices, getting everything greasy, perhaps, was what enabled him to fix my video game controller on the first try without ever having seen one. Perhaps it was also like this in the Ving Tsun System. We dedicate ourselves to studying each step in Siu Nim Tau, so we can handle the unprecedented within an increasingly complex framework. In the end, I couldn't advance beyond "Lap Sau," but Si Gung kindly did a bit of "Daan Chi Sau" with me before we said goodbye. Thirty-one years after the times of high adventures with my grandfather at his home, I also had my Sunday afternoon with my Kung Fu grandfather. Life seems incredible at these times, doesn't it? I love my life.

TWO NEW MEMBERS IN MOY FAT LEI FAMILY (DOIS NOVOS MEMBROS NA FAMÍLIA MOY FAT LEI)

There I was: Speeding my car in the streets of Méier , until arriving at  Oficinas Street. There, I saw a payphone and I threw my car on the sidewalk, I turned on the "alert" and phone Si Fu: "Of course not Thiago! ..." - Said Si Fu looking without patience - "It was for you to pick me up at home And let's go together to Citta America Mall "- he concluded. Calmer, I got into my car, turned on the sound, and while was playing Prince's "Purple Rain", I drove to Si Fu's home.

It was a very hot morning, although the Méier School reform was a success in many respects such as promoting new leaderships. We still had to solve the problem with the air conditioning, and because of that, my Kung Fu brother , Iuri Alvarenga, was sweating if there was no tomorrow while practicing with Vitor, Clayton and Keith Markus. The combination until then, would be to get the Si Fu in the Citta America mall to from there, together we go to another mall in Barra for the invitation of admission in the Moy Fat Lei Family of Renato and Poliana Madeira. It turns out that I received a message from Si Fu: "... If you want to meet me around 11:00, we can go talking in the car and have more time together ..." - At that moment, I thought I was going to meet him at Citta America and because of the distance, I flew off to my car!

When I entered the Kung Fu Family (photo above), I could not understand the commotion that events like Si Fu's birthday, ceremonies, or even his presence or a simple request used to cause in people. Practitioners like Si Suk Ursula and André Cardoso, seemed to give their all in the simplest of the requests of their Si Hing Julio Camacho, my Si Fu. And over time, I realized, that when we practice, we put everything of ourselves to perform a movement and understand what lies behind it, so in relation to Kung Fu Life could not be different. To the point where in our own daily lives we can do the same.

Then, eighteen years after joining the Kung Fu Family, I was running like Tom Cruise , and  to the car, I was driving like crazy to Barra, until a thought crossed my mind: "I should find him at home or at Citta America Mall? "- As I was without a cell phone, I could no longer talk to him, and almost at Oficinas Street, I found myself wondering what to do until I saw a pay phone.

(Em 2006 , Mestre Julio Camacho demonstra o Siu Nim Tau em Hong Kong

(In 2006, Master Julio Camacho demonstrates the Siu Nim Tau in Hong Kong in the Mo Gun of Master Sam Lau that appears in the blue coat in the background. This was the first Ving Tsun demonstration by a Brazilian in Hong Kong)

Once, Si Fu was talking about the Siu Nim Tau while we were practicing, he commented that we can not fly away with our thoughts while we execute it. We need to be present with every movement and every moment, from the beginning, to the end of the Siu Nim Tau. And this, he called "Moving Meditation": "If your mind fly away during a fight you die."

In many moments in Kung Fu Life, even when we want to hit it a lot, we end up forgetting something, getting in the way, making foolish ... I think as Si Fu said many times, "Siu Nim Tau" also means "Little will." So we would be doing exactly the opposite of its nature.

I got Si Fu at home and on the way it was possible to have a long talk about "Baai Si", also very enlightening. And if when we are practicing, we need to understand the levers of our own body and its fine adjustments in order to be able to do what was proposed. That conversation showed that when one is Si Fu, it is also important to observe the levers, but the invisible ones. Those who drive the Kung Fu Family always ahead, without strength, without exaggeration.

Si Fu, who is also a Psychologist, had to attend a patient and I waited. I usually carry a book with me or my notebook. On that day, I had nothing with me. I sat on a bench in front of a large portal where an incredible wind was flowing on that hot day and I thought about what we had talked about.

When we arrived at Yuki Restaurant, a restaurant where my two younger Kung Fu brothers, Clayton and Rodrigo, my To Dai Pedro Freire and the two aspiring members of the Moy Fat Lei  Family Renato and Poliana Madeira  were waiting for us.

(Daniel, son of Renato and Poliana, showing his newest drawing at the end of a practice)

Renato took me by surprise when a few months ago he came to meet the Méier School with the intention of starting his eldest son (photo above) on the way to the Chinese martial arts, with all his relatives. It was a very hot day, with unbearable heat, I received them the best I could. To my surprise, not only Dani, but Renato and Poliana also began to practice. And their involvement with everyone of Méier School was such a big thing that it gave me the funny feeling that they were with us a lot longer.

We sat at the table, in a previously unprecedented configuration, with Si Fu participating directly in the invitation of two new members to join my Family. This kind of process is very special not only for me, but mainly within the context of "Mo Lam" (The Martial Arts Circles). For it is the "simple" presence of the Si Fu of Si Fu which symbolizes the consent that the second gives to the work of the first. In addition, given the importance Si Fu has within the "Mo Lam", the Moy Fat Lei Family has always been with a kind of turbine since its inception, just because it descended from Si Fu.

I really believe that everything has a way. And the first thing that caught my attention in Renato and Poliana was the whole organization made by the couple, and the constant adjustments in their schedules so that they and Daniel could follow the practice. Other people would not have persevered.
As the weeks went by the involvement of the two increased to the point of discovering that the list of places for Si Fu's birthday dinner, and the negotiation with them, was happening on their part. At first, I was a bit afraid, but I thought better and let things happen by myself, monitoring from afar with the help of Clayton and Rodrigo.

(My photo with Si Gung: Master of my Master on the occasion
of his 52nd birthday in Rio de Janeiro that I helped organize).

Long before the fever of the motivational speakers  that invaded Brazil in the last years, in the year 2000, Si Gung (photo) commented during a lecture in the old School directed by Si Fu in Jacarepaguá, that a good oratory had to vary so as not to Dull the audience experience. This variation could contain a funny story in order to bring the attention of the listener back.
Enquanto Si Fu trazia o lado "Humano", me foquei no lado "Formal".

Usually when I invite someone into the Kung Fu Family, I try to vary in the same way during the meal, so that the experience is full, and so that we avoid seriousness. This time, thanks to the presence of Si Fu (photo) that brought a relaxed air and full of curiosities. I was able to balance with the most serious portion of a luncheon for this purpose.
We do not invent anything there, we only use the concept of Humanity and Formality of Confucianism. While Si Fu had the "Human" side, I focused on the "Formal" side. It was a new experience and I think it worked well.

In appreciation for the invitation, it is customary for a Hung Baau to be delivered at an appropriate time. In the photo above, I receive from Renato a Hung Baau for me and another to be delivered to my wife.
Renato for some reason reminds me of my  Kung Fu
brother Thiago Silva: Someone very intelligent who is always smiling.
From our first phone call when he sought Ving Tsun's practice for his eldest son, so far this picture has all gone by in the blink of an eye. I'm glad that's how it was.

We also delivered Hung Baau to the Si Fu who gave us the honor of his presence. In the photo above, we see the moment that Poliana delivers a Hung Baau to her now "Si Gung".
Poliana said how much she felt welcomed, with her family, by everyone of Mo Gun. Poliana, with Renato, lived in many places in Brazil and in Rio. Places that had Kung Fu Families. However, it was precisely in Méier that their entrance took place in my Family. As my Si Fu said to me when I joined the Kung Fu Family: "I hope it's not by chance."

Our day was even further afield on the way to the international airport with Si Fu to get his new passport when lunch was over. It was another special day with Si Fu, in which at first I had many appointments. But then, I remember Si Fu's citations a few years ago to a passage by Rabelais: "... I know many who could not when they should, because they did not want when they could ..."

You who now walks on Sunday morning near the corner of Rubies Street and Street of Topazes in front of the sign,  to buy a cockerel, the newspaper or for any other reason. Perhaps notice the gentleman who sells DVD's there next to the bakery. In his business, you can find the franchise films "Ip Man" starring Donnie Yen (photo) in the role of Ip Man, the greatest Master of the Chinese Art called Ving Tsun (read "Wing Chun") . But in 1995, when I moved away from Rocha Miranda, nobody knew what Ving Tsun was ... We did Not even had DVD's, only VHS tapes that could be rented at Primu's Video, on the same corner ...

O PRIMEIRO MESTRE DE
VING TSUN DE ROCHA MIRANDA
ROCHA MIRANDA'S FIRST VING TSUN MASTER

My name is Thiago Pereira, and in the photo above, I'm between my Master Julio Camacho, and my Master's Master: Mr. Leo Imamura. I was born in Rocha Miranda, and now I want to tell a little about how last year, I became the first Master of Ving Tsun internationally recognized from our beloved neighborhood.
In fact, for those who walk today in the dangerous streets of Rocha Miranda, may not remember or did not lived the good times of the first half of the 90s, when I was only 11 years old, and could go to the Feast of St. Barbara Church smoothly with my friends .

I grew up in Vieira do Couto Street, and my grandfather Carlos ,holding me in this photo, came to the neighborhood in the 50's and married my grandmother, who had arrived ten years earlier. My mother was born and also grew up on this street. And as I studied at the Salesian School. Later, she met my father in Rocha Miranda Main Club. And finally in 1983 I was born.

where I lived from 1989 to 1995)

Rocha Miranda was not widely known outside the North Zone  of Rio. The beach was much far awaythan it is today, almost no one had cars, few had a phone line, but it did not matter much! Life was much simpler and quiet in those days, and I can say that my childhood was very happy.
However, in 1995, we were invited to leave the house in which we lived and how it was not possible to live all in the small house of my grandparents in the beginning of the street, we moved to West Zone. All friends of the street and the school, all the dreams, stayed behind. And when we are children, this is not always so easy to understand.
(Making a speech after being titled as Master of Ving Tsun on August 29, 2015)

When I arrived in the new district was affected by successive approaches in the street: pickpockets, rascals in school, bandits, etc ... Every time something happened to me, I dreamed of returning to Rocha Miranda and always thought of all my friends from Salesian School: all parties, all discoveries, all the laughter that I was losing to be so far.
Rent movies was my most fun in a place that did not know anyone. And Airborne(1993) I rented almost every week. It told the story of Mitchell Goose, a young man who had been forced to move from California to Cincinnati, and had hard times in the new place untill he was back on top ... But my comeback was far from happening ...
(Com meu amigo de infância Junior em 2009)
(With my childhood friend Junior in 2009)

Things just were not worse because the weekend I could stay in my grandparents. And there, on the corner of Vieira do Couto, at the Texaco station, at a small VHS rent store, my friend Junior (photo), gave me a film that would change my life, The Legend of Drunken Master II(1994). The film starring Jackie Chan, and it was from it that I fell in love for the Kung Fu. I started to buy magazines and watch more and more movies. I decided then that should start practicing martial arts to defend myself of constants problems that faced in the street and at school. But it was only in 1999 that would begin in Ving Tsun.

Ving Tsun is a martial art that was first known because of its most distinguished practitioner: Bruce Lee (photo). Later, in the 2000s, the Master of Bruce Lee, Ip Man (photo), through the franchise films "Ip Man", made the art became famous again.

From all that the practice of Ving Tsun brought me, the most important undoubtedly was the relationship with my Master Julio Camacho (photo): A friend, mentor, and a person who helped me to develop myself as a human being. For although I has begun to practice to learn how to defend myself. The manner of speaking, to stand, to dress, to understand the world and myself more clearly. Were all fruits of this relationship with him.

A few days ago, Completed 1 year I was titled Qualified Master by Moy Yat Ving Tsun Martial Intelligence. And several times I thought that if I had not went trough what I lived, experienced what I have since I left in 1995  Rocha Miranda, none of this would have happened. It is not a matter of thinking If I would not be as happy as I am today. It's just that, I would live a different story.
But for my grandfather, who made many works in the neighborhood as a bricklayer, and my grandmother, so dear to all of the neighborhood. Wherever they are now, they can be proud, because his grandson succeeded in becoming the first Master of Ving Tsun from the neighborhood that they choose to live more than 60 years ago ....
