Bruce Lee, Yun Fan (緣分 / Yuánfèn 缘分) and the Encounters That Shape a Lifetime (李小龍、緣分與塑造一生的相遇)

 

Hoje completam-se 53 anos desde o falecimento de Bruce Lee. A fotografia acima mostra um par de Onitsuka Tiger pertencente ao Grão-Mestre Leo Imamura. A imagem foi registrada pelo querido Raphael Carvalheira durante a visita oficial do meu mentor ao Polo de Acesso pelo qual sou responsável, em 2024.

Ao observar essa fotografia, é possível perceber que o Si Gung (師公 / Shī Gōng 师公) escolheu esse calçado por um motivo muito especial. Segundo ele, Bruce Lee desempenhou um papel fundamental em sua vida.

Ele conta que, por ter "aparência de estrangeiro" e viver no Brasil, não no Brasil de hoje, mas no de quarenta anos atrás, vivia um contraste muito grande. Naquela época, enfrentou situações de preconceito racial. Nesse contexto, Bruce Lee surgia, entre o final da década de 1960 e o início da década de 1970, como um verdadeiro ícone para jovens que, assim como ele, lidavam com frustrações e enfrentavam inúmeras dificuldades em diferentes aspectos da vida por causa do racismo.

O Si Gung comenta que Bruce Lee o ajudou profundamente a acreditar mais em si mesmo, a confiar nos seus projetos e a acreditar que aquilo que parecia impossível poderia, de fato, ser alcançado. 

Segundo ele, foi esse processo que, finalmente, lhe trouxe autoconfiança.

Today marks the 53rd anniversary of Bruce Lee's passing. The photograph above shows a pair of Onitsuka Tiger trainers belonging to Grand Master Leo Imamura. The image was taken by my dear friend Raphael Carvalheira during my mentor's official visit to the Rio de Janeiro Access Hub, for which I am responsible, in 2024.

Looking at this photograph, it becomes clear that Si Gung (師公 / Shī Gōng 师公) chose this footwear for a very special reason. According to him, Bruce Lee played a fundamental role in his life.

He explains that, because he had what he describes as "the appearance of a foreigner" while growing up in Brazil—not the Brazil of today, but the Brazil of more than forty years ago—he experienced a profound sense of contrast. At that time, he faced episodes of racial prejudice. It was within this context that Bruce Lee emerged, between the late 1960s and the early 1970s, as a true icon for young people who, like him, were dealing with frustration and confronting countless challenges in different aspects of life because of racism.

Si Gung (師公 / Shī Gōng 师公) often says that Bruce Lee profoundly helped him to believe in himself, to trust in his own projects, and to realise that what once seemed impossible could, in fact, be achieved.

According to him, it was through this process that he finally developed genuine self-confidence.

Mais tarde, eu me vi em Bangkok e, enquanto visitava um dos muitos shoppings da cidade, encontrei uma loja da Onitsuka Tiger. Acabei, com o incentivo do Mestre Senior Fabio Gomes, comprando o modelo que uso na foto acima, na qual apareço sentado ao lado do Si Gung (師公 / Shī Gōng 师公) .

Com certeza, a essa altura, você já percebeu que esses sapatos não servem apenas para calçar. Na verdade, essa marca conquistou algo muito especial, principalmente na cor amarela: conseguiram um heart-share. 

"Heart-share" é o grau em que uma marca ocupa um lugar afetivo no coração do cliente, tornando-se parte da sua identidade, das suas memórias e das suas escolhas, para além de critérios racionais como preço, qualidade ou conveniência.

O meu caso com Bruce Lee remonta a 1999, o mesmo ano em que comecei a praticar o Sistema Ving Tsun. Naqueles finais de tarde, quando saía da escola, havia uma banca que vendia quadros de madeira com fotografias dos maiores heróis do cinema. Entre eles, estava uma imagem de Bruce Lee caminhando pela sala de espelhos na sequência final de Operação Dragão (Enter the Dragon, 1973).

 Pendurei aquele quadro no meu quarto e, nos momentos mais desafiadores da adolescência, olhava para ele e encontrava inspiração para tentar mais uma vez. Bruce Lee parecia estar vivo naquele quadro. Era como se realmente estivesse ali.

Later, I found myself in Bangkok and, while visiting one of the city's many shopping centres, I came across an Onitsuka Tiger store. Encouraged by Senior Master Fabio Gomes, I ended up purchasing the pair I am wearing in the photograph above, in which I am seated beside Si Gung (師公 / Shī Gōng 师公).

By now, you have probably realised that these shoes are more than something to wear. In fact, this brand has achieved something quite remarkable, particularly with its iconic yellow model: it has earned a genuine heart-share.

"Heart-share" refers to the extent to which a brand occupies an emotional place in the customer's heart, becoming part of their identity, memories and choices, beyond rational considerations such as price, quality or convenience.

My own connection with Bruce Lee dates back to 1999, the same year I began practising the Ving Tsun System. On those late afternoons, as I left school, there was a newsstand that sold wooden picture plaques featuring photographs of cinema's greatest heroes. Among them was an image of Bruce Lee walking through the Hall of Mirrors in the final sequence of Enter the Dragon (1973).

I hung that picture on the wall of my bedroom and, during some of the most challenging moments of my adolescence, I would look at it and find the inspiration to try once again. Bruce Lee seemed alive in that image. It was as though he were truly there.

Recentemente, o mesmo Raphael Carvalheira me enviou uma mensagem: "Acabei de ver uma garota no metrô com um Onitsuka Tiger amarelo igual ao do Bruce Lee". Imediatamente, enviei esta imagem para ele. Esse não é o mesmo modelo que comprei em Bangkok. Este eu ganhei do Grão-Mestre Leo Imamura. É o mesmo modelo que ele usava na primeira imagem deste artigo.

Sabe, muitas vezes esse tênis amarelo não combina com a roupa que estou usando. Ainda assim, sempre que o calço em um dia difícil e meus olhos se voltam para ele, lembro de mim mesmo em 1999, comprando aquele quadro do Bruce Lee e pendurando-o no meu quarto. Esse par de tênis conecta o Mestre Senior Thiago Pereira ao menino de quinze anos que sonhava em praticar artes marciais pelo resto da vida.

Nesses momentos, sinto as dificuldades diminuírem e se tornarem administráveis. Começo a enxergar soluções onde antes pareciam não existir. Tudo isso porque passo a olhar para o problema em perspectiva.

Recently, the same Raphael Carvalheira sent me a message: "I’ve just seen a girl on the subway wearing the same yellow Onitsuka Tigers as Bruce Lee." I immediately sent him this photograph above. It is not the same pair I bought in Bangkok. This pair was a gift from Grandmaster Leo Imamura. It is the very same model he was wearing in the first photograph of this article.

The truth is, these yellow trainers often do not match what I am wearing. Even so, whenever I put them on during a difficult day and my eyes fall upon them, I am reminded of myself in 1999, buying that picture of Bruce Lee and hanging it on the wall of my bedroom. This pair of trainers connects Senior Master Thiago Pereira with the fifteen-year-old boy who dreamed of practising martial arts for the rest of his life.

In those moments, my difficulties seem to diminish and become manageable. I begin to see solutions where, only moments before, none appeared to exist. All because I have started to see the problem from a different perspective.

Muitos praticantes de Ving Tsun ao redor do mundo já se perguntaram se, caso Bruce Lee nunca tivesse existido, ainda estariam praticando hoje. Sabe, eu acredito que sim.

Recentemente, ouvi do Mestre Senior Quintela, responsável pelo Headquarters do Moy Yat Ving Tsun Safeguard Group, em Abu Dhabi, que certa vez o Mestre Senior Nataniel teria lhe dito: "O seu discípulo vai encontrar você."

Em outra ocasião, o Grão-Mestre Leo Imamura perguntou se eu não achava curioso estarmos no Instituto Moy Yat, dedicando tantas horas de um domingo qualquer ao treinamento.

Por fim, lembro de estar sentado em um dos maiores eventos de artes marciais chinesas do meu estado. O organizador, o querido Mestre Sergio Silva, me convidou para ocupar a cadeira de honra. Enquanto observava os praticantes executando a Dança do Leão, comecei a refletir sobre todas as horas que eles haviam dedicado para chegar até ali e sobre o fato de que, naquele momento, também estavam reunidos em uma manhã de domingo.

Pensando em tudo isso, acredito que seja uma questão de Yun Fan (緣分 / Yuánfèn 缘分). Ou seja, todos nós acabaríamos nos encontrando de alguma maneira.

Many Ving Tsun practitioners around the world have wondered whether, had Bruce Lee never existed, they would still be practising today. As for me, I believe they would.

Recently, I heard Senior Master Quintela, who is responsible for the Headquarters of the Moy Yat Ving Tsun Safeguard Group in Abu Dhabi, recount something that Senior Master Nataniel once told him: "Your disciple will find you."

On another occasion, Grandmaster Leo Imamura asked me whether I did not find it curious that we were at the Moy Yat Institute, devoting so many hours of an ordinary Sunday to training.

I also remember sitting at one of the largest Chinese martial arts events in my state. The organiser, the dearly respected Master Sergio Silva, invited me to take the seat of honour. As I watched the practitioners performing the Lion Dance, I found myself reflecting on the countless hours they had dedicated to reaching that moment, and on the fact that they, too, had chosen to spend a Sunday morning gathered there.

Reflecting on all of this, I have come to believe that it is ultimately a matter of Yun Fan (緣分 / Yuánfèn 缘分). In other words, we would all have found one another somehow.

Talvez seja precisamente essa a maior contribuição de Bruce Lee. Não apenas ter inspirado milhões de pessoas a praticarem artes marciais, mas ter servido de ponto de partida para encontros muito maiores do que ele próprio.

 Alguns encontraram um mentor, como aconteceu comigo ao conhecer o Si Gung (師公 / 师公, Sī Gung / Shī Gōng) [foto acima]. Outros descobriram uma profissão. Outros, ainda, uma forma diferente de viver.

 Talvez seja isso que Yun Fan (緣分 / Yuánfèn 缘分) nos recorde: certos encontros parecem possuir uma disposição própria para acontecer, e transformam-se em relações capazes de orientar toda uma vida. 

No fim, talvez descubramos que algumas pessoas não entram no nosso caminho para serem o destino, mas para nos conduzirem até ele. Foi assim com Bruce Lee na vida do Si Gung (師公 / 师公, Sī Gung / Shī Gōng). Foi assim também na minha. E talvez todos nós estejamos destinados a ocupar esse mesmo papel na vida de alguém.

Perhaps that is Bruce Lee's greatest contribution. Not simply that he inspired millions of people to practise martial arts, but that he became the starting point for encounters far greater than himself.

Some found a mentor, as I did when I met Si Gung (師公 / 师公, Sī Gung / Shī Gōng) [photo above]. Others discovered a profession. Still others found a different way of living.

Perhaps that is what Yun Fan (緣分 / Yuánfèn 缘分) reminds us of: certain encounters seem to possess a momentum of their own, unfolding into relationships capable of shaping an entire life.

In the end, we may come to realise that some people do not enter our lives because they are the destination, but because they lead us towards it. That was Bruce Lee's role in Si Gung (師公 / 师公, Sī Gung / Shī Gōng)'s life. It was his role in mine as well. And perhaps each of us is destined to play that very same role in someone else's life.
