HONG KONG´S CINEMA FIRST FEMALE ACTION CHARACTER

Um querido irmão Kung Fu, me enviou por motivos desconhecidos, o filme 'Come Drink With'[1966] etrelando Cheng Pei Pei[foto].

A dear Kung Fu brother, for unknown reasons, sent me the movie 'Come Drink With'[1966] starring Cheng Pei Pei[photo]. I always wanted to see this film, but I managed to go after the original copy n I foun it. And here in this article, I share my impressions of this work of art...
In general, the Hong Kong movie industry in the 1960s saw a rise in strong female leading characters, and King Hu's films were instrumental in this trend. His films were known for their complex and nuanced portrayal of women and helped to change the way women were portrayed in Hong Kong cinema.
King Hu's films were known for their complex and nuanced portrayal of women. His female characters were often just as skilled and capable as their male counterparts, and they were often the ones who drove the action of the story. This was a refreshing change from the typical portrayal of women in Hong Kong cinema at the time, which often reduced them to damsels in distress.

A NEW VING TSUN SCHOOL IN RIO RUNNIN' WILD

I used to say to myself that I didn't like the downtown area of the city of Rio de Janeiro very much... However, due to commitments from my other profession, I occasionally saw myself in the region. When not, I found an excuse to stop by and work from one of the many Starbucks over there. Other times, I sat down to chat with my Kung Fu brother Carlos Antunes, or with a To Dai. So, when I found myself, I was already enjoying the city downtown...

Recently, I had the opportunity to visit the room recently rented by one of my disciples, José Carlos. The room is located in Largo da Carioca, one of the many locations in downtown Rio. This being one of the most famous...

So far, the room has a poster of the Ving Tsun Kuen Kuit, which my disciple Keith Markus gave as a gift to José as a sign of good luck. And for the work to begin there, I first talked to my Si Fu. We talked for almost an hour about legitimacy and possibilities, related to this work... It was no longer about me, but about a descendant, and any wrong decision we make when we are part of a Lineage can harm all our descendants.
Therefore, I also spoke about the idea of how the transmission would take place there within this new location... And I commented that I had oriented José to maintain this space, as a Studio for the Ving Tsun Experience Program.

For me, of course, it was a moment of deep reflection when I set foot on the future Carioca Studio of Ving Tsun for the first time. José Carlos became aware of this desire after a series of significant experiences, with emphasis on Si Gung's two visits to MYVT Freguesia School in 2022, which touched him deeply for different reasons.
I remember as if it were yesterday, being excited with the keys to what would become the first headquarters of the MYVT Meier School in my hands. I called Si Fu from a payphone... Laughs. The keys felt heavy in my hands... However, I was just a boy. José, start from a point ahead. And as my Si Fu once said, that's exactly what it's about... Leaving the next generation at a point ahead of what we started.
Let's now wait for the first adventures in the Carioca Studio...

VING TSUN EXPERIENCE IN RIO DE JANEIRO

I gathered some people last Saturday to study the Ving Tsun Experience Level 1. Being the Ving Tsun Experience, a program inspired by the vision of Patriarch Moy Yat, which enables the interest of different people in experiencing the high level of a Kung Fu system through the characteristics of the Ving Tsun System, in terms of phases, modalities and nature of its domains.
Since we haven't reached the Chinese New Year yet, I considered this the last big gathering of the Year of the Tiger. And due to good consistency in the works presented since 2020 when we had the isolation due to the pandemic, the practitioners have believed and attended like never before.

This work had the consent of Si Gung [GM Leo Imamura] and my Si Fu [Master Julio Camacho]. So we had the presence of practitioners from different generations and from different moments that morning...
I was very confident that by presenting a fresh look at the work we've been doing for so long, it would inspire them to study even more of the Traditional System. I had 6 hours to come up with this potential scenario...

This study was the unfolding of a series of events since one of Si Gung's visits to MYVT Freguesia School. He himself told me that it would be great if I could attend a group of Masters and Senior Masters from different generations weekly, in an online study conducted by him. Along with me, my Kung Fu brothers Thiago Silva and Roberto Viana were also present. Roberto in particular was delighted with what he found in these studies, and very excited to practice Ving Tsun with the spirit of a beginner. It is important to take into account that this year Roberto completes 20 years in the Family.

I quote my Si Fu and our stories a lot in these meetings. I believe that helping older practitioners to rediscover their passion for Ving Tsun through the Ving Tsun Experience is also a way to inspire them to do the same for themselves and for those who are coming. As for the rookies who participated, they got to see some of the depth our Lineage has to offer.
It was a very special morning...

TWO EPIC VING TSUN SEMINARS IN RIO

One day I was there at the age of eighteen having my first contacts with “Biu Ji” and “Mui Fa Jong”, and in the blink of an eye of twenty years, I found myself in front of dozens of people talking about these two Domains of the Ving Tsun System, which represent the Advanced and Higher Initial Levels in our System. This was a challenge I set myself, because I started to pay more attention to the time I have in life... I somehow realized that I don't have all the time in the world... And of the time I have, I can't know how I will be in my final years... Therefore, taking advantage of every second to leave our mark and take the work we do to another level, I believe is fundamental. After all, a good job lasts beyond our lifetime...

When I sat down to breakfast on the day of the first seminar regarding “Biu Ji”, I had already prepared myself a lot. I knew that there would be people with almost two decades of practice, and if they were willing to spend a few hours with me, listening to what I had to consider on this topic, it couldn't be just anything....
Preparing for this type of event is always so much fun, when I start gathering all my notes and creating a lesson plan, there's a moment when something tells me it's going to be amazing... When that happens, I start to accelerate the pace in what I'm doing... I start remembering other important or even more impactful topics... And after that, I'm anxious to be able to start sharing everything that was prepared...

The fact that it is a martial art does not necessarily imply that there is practice... We can approach a Kung Fu System in many ways, but that day I knew it would be important to have... I wanted to be interrupted, and that I couldn't get to the last power point slide... I believed that if the content was engaging and interesting, questions would arise, and these wouldn't let me get into what I planned...

You change the tone of voice, the volume of what you're talking about, tell a funny story, and with these resources you'll capture the audience's attention for hours in an organic way. - "It went by fast!" - or - "I didn't even see the time go by!" - This type of “Feedback” that carries a report of “emotional time” [The one that we perceive its passage according to our feeling], was the final proof that it had been a good job.
I, so little, had a goal. I only knew that depending on how I conducted it, it could provoke feelings like a practitioner who is uncomfortable with so much that our Family has to offer and he had never realized, and even advanced in the System, if he realized that he could be fine further in terms of understanding...

- “Peguei eles!” - Pensei.

A short time later, there I was again, only now talking about “Muk Yan Jong” and with outsiders, practitioners of other martial arts... As I am in another phase of the System, the approach to this Domain changes completely. It was necessary to hold this meeting on two different occasions... And even one day after the Brazil game in World Cup, everyone was there very early and in one piece for the long hours that followed... - "I didn't see the time go by!" - Someone said at the end... - “I got them!” - I thought.

For some mysterious reason, at the end of the first day of the Wooden Dummy Meeting, I was quite emotional. Do you have any connection with a place or location? Well, I have... Sometimes when things are bad or difficult, I get in my car and drive to this location. I take a few laps around the neighborhood, and it's like everything's all right again. But that day, I felt so good that I found myself heading towards Rocha Miranda[My special place]... It was a very beautiful late afternoon, and I felt very fulfilled. You know, it's hard to explain... I see the "duty" a lot, but I like what I do a lot too... "To like", most of the time involves a childish feeling... But I don't worry, what I have a duty to preserve it, it's also what I like to do the most, so I don't get confused...
When I stopped the car on a dusty sidewalk in Rocha Miranda, and people were passing by as if they were in slow motion heading towards the center of the neighborhood... I lifted my sunglasses and saw that purple sky over the houses with peeling paint... I decided to send an audio message to my Master Julio Camacho to thank him for everything... Because I knew that absolutely everything I had shared that day came from what I learned with him...

It's hard to explain... But when we're ethical with the time we have, and we do things with our hearts, people notice... And we feel fulfilled. That's more or less it...
I closed my car, and enjoyed the late afternoon in my special place... Rocha Miranda wild neighborhood...And I was smiling as I walked away...

LEO, THE HIGH LEVEL LOW PROFILE

Either because of having done “Baai Si” and having continued in the “game”, or simply because have been following a “Si Fu” for more than two decades as a member of his Kung Fu Family. Whatever that person's expression is within the martial circle, he will be representing not only himself but also his own Si Fu.
Si Hing Leonardo for decades, attended Mo Gun weekly once or twice. In those moments when he was present, he gave himself wholeheartedly to what was most important to him: the transmission of the Ving Tsun System. And that, no one can deny... What he lost by focusing on transmission and technical improvement more than anything else, we'll never know - “I know you must have been upset with me many times, but it was my choice not to participate. ..”- He would have said to me in one of our cafes after practices.

Si Hing Leonardo's focus is present in other fields of his life... In the case of his famous book "Storm Dragons", he did not bother to write other books, he sought to improve his work to the limit from the "feedbacks" of readers and friends. With that, he surprised everyone with the English version, which I particularly thought was much better than the original in Portuguese.

The book, which is still for sale on AMAZON, shows that Si Hing is above all else, a “crafter”. He breaks down the Ving Tsun System in a very particular way, making it transcend the understanding of the entire Moy Jo Lei Ou Family together.

E talvez fosse o caso...

Having someone like Si Hing Leonardo as a disciple must be a great challenge. Being a grown man, his family, he makes very conscious choices understanding what is important to him. Many times, we did not understand his “parallel path” while we were organizing an event. What perhaps we didn't understand was that he made his choices and paid for them. Something that Si Fu talks a lot about "martiality", which is the importance of managing our choices.

Another challenge is his perspicacity regarding the Ving Tsun System, but our Si Fu is extremely intelligent too, and at times like this I found myself lost in the room as if I were witnessing two adults talking. And maybe that was the case...

For many times, I thought that members of a Kung Fu Family should look alike. Today I see that I was wrong. Diversity is very welcome, and discovering who we are and supporting it is part of the journey. According to Si Fu, when we don't elaborate well who we are, we tend to imitate the closest model we have. So in a way, Si Hing Leonardo's journey has always been very lonely for lack of a partner. No one put in as much practice as he did, and then he got too far behind for us to match.

There is a question that can be asked for cases like this: “The Daai Si Hing is very good technically, so what? What does he do with that skill?” - Well, spending time with him in the last two years weekly, I can perceive a very strong presence when we are together. Si Hing Leonardo became someone very sharp, became more minimalist, completely changed his lifestyle, and using the handling of knives that both intrigues and amuses him, he makes decisions with great caution.

I think Si Hing Leonardo is the great living example of the importance of Si Fu's work: He follows his own path, is firm in his principles, has become extremely intelligent, is a grown man, knows what is most important to him, and defend it. And while he is so similar to Si Fu, they are also very different.
This is the Daai Si hing of the Moy Jo Lei Ou Family, passionate about the Ving Tsun System for the last 25 years... Someone who doesn't seem to attach much importance to the title of Master, but who flaunts it with every movement. The man who fulfilled the dream of an entire generation, and became number 1. Congratulations, Si Hing! Happy Birthday!

SI FU TIES A KNOT IN A DROP OF WATER.

There is a very important foundation in the Ving Tsun System, which is the idea of "facing", as the martial proverb inscribed in stone seal by Si Taai Gung says - "Jung Sin Dui Ying". We pass the first entire Domain called “Siu Nim Tau” facing our opponent in a stationary stance. Even so, when the first blows start to come in and bother us, our natural tendency is to contract the body, hold our breath, tense beyond what is necessary, tense parts of the body that we don't need at that moment... All of this, because even the “ symbolic combat” when it carries a martiality in the appropriate measure for the practitioner, it brings out what was hidden.
When we arrive at the “Mui Fa Jong” Domain, whether it's the touch with the hands on the opponent, or the “verbal” touch, when someone calls your attention, they enter with more intensity. The demands sometimes seem too many - "...You throw a lot of things at the person and he has to learn to deal with it..." - My Si Gung Leo Imamura would have said once.
My Si Fu once told me that in this Domain, people start to show up with appointments that according to them prevent them from being present, but mainly they start to get injured - "It's very funny!" - He said with a smile - "...The person starts to appear with some health problem, which prevents him from practicing..." - He commented, as if he were talking about a supernatural phenomenon of people who have resistance to the frustrations caused by that Domain, and end up expressing it in the body.

At these times, we cannot forget the basic principle: No matter what challenge you are facing, you cannot run away. You have to face it head on. Even to decide, if necessary, to make a “strategic withdrawal”. At practice time, you can simply ask your practice buddy, “Hey man, want to drink some water?” - You are not thirsty, but you will take advantage of those moments to reflect on what can be adjusted and improved, including asking your opponent. This is yet another advantage of “symbolic combat”: You can try as many times as you like. You can work on your assertiveness, so that in the real world, you don't make mistakes. There won't be a second chance most of the time.

When we make ourselves available to accept, use, and lean on whatever is thrown at us by life, we stop being scared. - “...'I got scared' doesn't seem like an appropriate line for a martial artist...” - Si Fu told me sometimes, and in different ways over the years. We must accept what comes, and let pass what goes. Something close to the “martial proverb” [Kuen Kuit] “LOI LAU HUI SUNG”.
If we fail to develop this mental attitude, the process with weapons in the Ving Tsun System can be very painful.

In our Family, Si Fu encourages us not to waste energy on what is not necessary. He is our greatest example, that with the right attitude, it is possible to solve anything. Si Suk Ursula once said that he seems to be able to “tie a knot in a drop of water”. But more than his ability to finish what he started is that he does it without making excuses, and without appearing to be suffering. This helps us to understand that even when we manage to resolve a demand, we can still, in that moment of apparent “success”, ask ourselves how much suffering or pain the whole process was. Thanks to Si Fu's example.

VING TSUN HAS IT! My new challenge as a practitioner.

This is me on a late Saturday afternoon... I was with Daniel Anchieta, still a child, trying to learn how to use Chinese  seals. It was the kitchen of one of the Mo Guns that my Si Fu already directed in Rio de Janeiro. In one of the other rooms, he worked with Daniel's father, my Kung Fu brother Vladimir, some part of “Baat Jaam Do”.
I was very focused on following Si Fu's instructions on how to use the seals. I should be able to perfectly stamp paper rectangles, which would later be laminated. With that, the seals and their prints would be on a display. I had a date with a girl that night, but I thought it would be best to cancel it and continue concentrating on the chinese seals work... I didn't want to stop halfway through, and the more I made mistakes, the more it irritated me and I made even more mistakes... It was a good fight for me with those seals ...
[Cham Kiu com Si Fu]
[Cham Kiu with Si Fu]

Muitos anos antes, eu estava no segundo Domínio do Sistema Ving Tsun, o “Cham Kiu”.

Many years before, I was in the second Domain of the Ving Tsun System, the “Cham Kiu”. I was sixteen years old, and I didn't see how the weekly practice of "Chi Sau" could make me a better fighter... I lived a paradox, because I thought my Si Fu was the best, and I couldn't understand how he had become so good" just doing Chi Sau”. It was then that a friend of mine called me to try again a martial art that I had already practiced and he continued... I went without informing anyone of the Kung Fu Family, so my feeling was that I was doing something wrong... .
I did the warm-up, the stretching, and the practice of this martial art unfolded... I realized that my resourcefulness was much better than three years before, when I was still practicing this modality... - “How could it be? Is this possible?”-  I asked myself. And I didn't know how to answer.
My friend Rodrigo was a witness that one of the black belts present said that I had kicked him below the allowed limit... I knew I hadn't done that, he stopped practicing. With the other one, I didn't stand a chance. However, in the end, the teacher called me and asked my age, when I answered he commented - “Thats bad... If you were already seventeen, I would sign you up for the championship next week!” - Leaving there with everyone, I had already decided that I would not return. I felt very embarrassed for having been there without saying nothing to anyone from the Family, but at the same time  I was very impressed. I was learning something, and I didn't even know how...

[Julia, watches the Chi Sau practice with Thiago Silva]

Over the years, I got in touch with the idea that “Kung Fu” is not just associated with what we mean by “fighting”, and that learning a martial art does not mean learning a skill just to kill. The “Kung Fu” we developed serves for everything... Everything should be present during practice: The art of breathing, the art of relaxing, the art of concentrating, the art of having fun, the art of knowing yourself, and so many others... You learn without realizing it, and learn to learn from anything and at any time...
[With Si Fu at one of his former apartaments]

My biggest challenge has been to rediscover “Life” beyond “Kung Fu Life”. Aligning the practitioner with the person has not been an easy task. I have devoted a lot of time to understanding better how to transpose martial skill into a life skill, but the challenge seems endless. Unfortunately, I'm still very contaminated by a fixed idea about “Kung Fu”, and it's hard to understand that not everything can be solved with determination. Sometimes things even resolve themselves, but letting things go by themselves for someone who worships action like me, is desperate. However, I know that Ving Tsun has everything I need. It is not necessary to look in another System... I don't think I would have the patience for that...

Experiences like that lonely Saturday afternoon trying to use the selas with assertiveness, are important for me to be able to break a very dangerous cycle, which is to study the Ving Tsun System, to get even better in relation to the Ving Tsun System. I need to use what I've learned to be able to use a simple stone seal and pasty ink on a sheet of paper. If I left that afternoon, I knew I would have a feeling of giving up inside me.
... However, there is a greater quest than that, which is to be someone who understands the art of living life based on martial arts... In Chinese, “to understand” is also called “Bright up”... Many things have already been brithen up, the most important ones remain obscure. And perhaps, precisely because they are so important...
But this is just a story of “Chi Sau” and “stone seals”... Don't take it too seriously.
