Master Washington Fonseca's "Biu Ji Spirit"

Master Washington Fonseca giving a lecture at the Brazilian Federal Senate.

So, I when I met Grandmaster Leo Imamura that morning, I was already feeling very unwell at the Manhattan bakery. I thought I'd wake up feeling better, but the fever wouldn't go down. I managed to buy an antibiotic with the help of my disciple Lucas Eustáquio, and all I wanted was to lie down and sleep. I had scheduled a "Biu Ji" class with Si Gung, and after breakfast, we would go to the Moy Yat Institute. Inside, besides the physical pain, I felt bad for it affecting me so much. I thought, "Well, I've always followed through with my duties even when my health is very poor. I must be really unwell." Somehow, I managed to do that "Biu Ji" class, guided by Si Gung and with Lucas's help. But I had also given up on going to lunch with Si Gung and his parents. He had invited me, and for me, it was an honor to have the opportunity to be present at such a personal moment for Si Gung, but I was already feeling broken-spirited. I returned to Lucas's house after the "Biu Ji" practice and slept until it was time to take Si Gung to the airport with dear Master Herbert and Lucas again. These adventures took place last November...

People of high caliber took to the lectern at the Federal Senate on that Monday, the 18th, but I must confess I was deeply moved by Master Washington Fonseca's speech. He had spoken to me about three days earlier, mentioning how unwell he was on the eve of the Panel event [on the 16th of March]. However, he concluded his message making it clear: "But I will be there!". When I met him on that Saturday morning, he was completely focused on organizing everything for the panel, despite his weakened health. During the episode in São Paulo, Si Gung mentioned one or two things, perhaps to check if I was open to reconsidering my withdrawal from the lunch. With Si Suk Washington, he was very direct about how vital he was to that activity. However, this didn't need to be said, as Master Washington himself was fully aware of it, and I was glad to be able to help.

(Mesa com a visão do Mestre Washington do Painel.)
(Table with Master Washington's view of the Panel.)

When the video material is ready, perhaps you will be attentive to what is playing on the screen. Everything that was said during that Panel was very special. However, for me, it will also be possible to remember Si Suk Washington's effort to be there. At one point, I approached his table, and there was a packet of the same lozenges that I had taken in São Paulo before getting the antibiotic. The packet was empty; I reminded Si Suk Washington to be mindful of the quantity of lozenges per day. He looked at me for a few seconds without saying anything. In my imagination, I gave voice to that look of his: "And what do you suggest?"

So, honestly, I don't remember what Master Washington Fonseca said on that podium. I was deeply reflecting on the lesson I had learned from him that weekend. He had fallen ill with the same symptoms as me, a sore throat and fever, and he did what needed to be done. Of course, we are individuals with different bodies, but as he spoke, I also recalled my Si Suk André Cardoso, who, as I've mentioned before, on my first day in "Biu Ji," said the following: "...Big Thiago, in 'Biu Ji,' we do things without excuses, without delay, and we do what needs to be done with what we have at the moment..." I heard those words when I was 18, and at 40, I realized that even a fever could still stop me. But if you want to know what I learned from Si Suk Washington and his example of a "Biu Ji spirit" for life, it's that I probably missed out on an excellent lunch with Si Gung and his parents in São Paulo last November.

"Luk Dim Bun Gwan" with Grand Master William Moy.

I had been assisting the Panel for many hours, eagerly anticipating Grand Master William Moy's discussion on 'Luk Dim Bun Gwan'. It so happened that when I was much younger, my Master Julio Camacho allegedly told me that during a conversation with Grand Master William Moy in São Paulo on a certain occasion, he shared that when you have a clear awareness of the shoulder line while practicing 'Luk Dim Bun Gwan', you hardly need to look. As the staff would naturally follow the line towards the opponent. That story fascinated me both because of my young age and the fact that in those days, it wasn't allowed to watch 'Luk Dim Bun Gwan' practice. So, imagining the son of Patriarch Moy Yat practicing without looking was almost magical. In the blink of an eye, 22 years had passed and there I was standing, holding the microphone so that Grand Master William himself could speak precisely about 'Luk Dim Bun Gwan'. In these moments, I become very emotional about life; it's almost magical, and I was very focused not to smile, as it was almost involuntary. After all, a part of me wondered - 'Would he demonstrate without looking to his oponnent?'

On that day, I left the hotel with my disciple Daniel and Master Felipe Soares's student at 6 a.m. to assist with the setup. I love Saturday mornings, especially that one, which had all the makings of a great day, and I simply didn't imagine that Grand Master William would ask me to help with the demonstration. I was moved, it seemed there was no reason for it, but it was something I carried in my heart. Perhaps that's why when he said - 'Pick up the pole' - I grabbed his staff and not the other. So, for about 3 seconds, it was just the two of us, each holding one end of the same staff, with him looking at me, perhaps trying to understand what I was doing, until he said - 'Not this one, the other pole'.

"Ok, você pode disparar" - disse ele. E eu dei o meu melhor disparo.
Assim, você poderia me ver ali na demonstração.

"Okay, now, go ahead." he said. And I took my best shot.
So, you could see me there in the demonstration.

Eu nunca desisti.

When we open a 'Mo Gun', we must have clear the reason for doing so within the context in which we find ourselves, that's what I believe. If you lose sight that your job is to safeguard the Ving Tsun System, perhaps you may do things for money, for the power that the leadership position provides (even within a small 'bubble' of the people in your circle), you may allow yourself not to fulfill what was agreed upon with a single student or with an entire group. Or perhaps, out of innocence, you may not fully grasp the responsibility that this act will demand of you. Similarly, I believe that as the years go by for a professional or simply someone who conducts work in this field, if we lose sight of the enchantment and colour that martial arts provided us when we began the journey, we lose strength and give up. You might even say: 'Hey, I'm focusing on this now, or on that...' - But deep down, you can no longer prioritize. And as the saying goes, as quoted by Yamamoto Tsunetomo in the book 'Hagakure' (Ed. Conrad, 2004) - 'When your heart asks, what do you answer?' - That's why moments like these with Grand Master William Moy mean a lot to me. There are those initial objectives from when you started, and each time you pass through them more mature, you ask yourself: 'Have I made it?' - At that moment, for a few simple minutes, there is an 18-year-old Thiago somewhere inside who, 22 years later, not only witnessed the long-awaited demonstration of Grand Master William's staff, but also took part in it. If that isn't the ultimate for a martial artist, I don't know what is. I never gave up
