Breakfast after a year with my Master Julio Camacho

Many years ago, sitting with my Master Julio Camacho inside his old ZAFIRA car, we were waiting for his daughters to get out. We were at the Barra Bali condominium in the West Zone of Rio, and it was a pleasant early afternoon. While we were watching a gentleman sweep the floor in silence, he concluded his speech, calling me the following reflection: “...Thiago, when two people get to know each other very young, there are so many transformations, that it is very rare when the transformations of both coincide...”

After a long time, I could be with my Master Julio Camacho and his wife, Mrs. Marcia Camacho, again. However, it would not be that Saturday of May. I had scheduled myself to be with Si Fu at more private moments this time, whether during his interview on my PODCAST “Vida Kung Fu” [And therefore, in its aftermath] or on his visit to the MYVT Méier School. And it was thanks to an amusing misunderstanding that I decided to go and meet him. It was breakfast in the condominium of Master Leonardo Reis, my “Si Hing”, with other senior members of the Moy Jo Lei Ou Family. I preferred to arrive earlier, to have the opportunity to read a book that I got as a gift from my Kung Fu brother Fabiano Silva about “Karate”. As I know that the ambience of the condominium is very pleasant in the morning, I had everything planned! However, when parking the car, Rafael Romanizio, one of the new disciples who would perform “Baai Si” that morning, also parked with me. We exchanged a few words and walked together to another location, where the ceremony would take place. I didn't know that the staff would already be there, so while Rafael was speaking, I found myself reflecting on this strange feeling of “not being part of the organization of the ceremony”. I participated in the organization of many events, since 2006 when I had a conversation with Master Felipe Soares, my dear “Si Suk”, who forever changed my view on the importance of participating in Kung Fu Family moments beyond practice. However, now in 2023, already with my Kung Fu Family, the time had come to promote this to the next generation, without ceasing to make myself available to my own Family, when requested.

After talking for a while with Si Hing Leonardo and Thiago Silva, we walked towards the breakfast spot. Arriving there, just Thiago and I, we realized that Si Fu, Si Mo and Roberto Viana [who had picked them up at Mrs Vera Camacho's residence, whom we affectionately call "Si Taai"], were already there. Si Fu, as always, was in a very good mood, and praised the way we were dressed. The good-mood way that Si Fu leads life is always disconcerting for me. He once told me that "a good disciple learns even when Si Fu didn't intend to pass anything on", and I think that in moments like this I can learn a little. My Si Hing Leonardo always teases me when he meets me in the morning, because I'm always serious. In fact, sometimes I'm thinking about the next challenge, the next problem, etc... And that makes me more serious. Before I thought I wasn't so serious, then I realized that in fact I'm . So, seeing Si Fu enjoying the moment brings me a reflection on the need to practice more “Siu Nim Tau” . After all, you can be serious, but with your mind in the present.
[De pé da esq para a dir. - Matheus, Rangel e Romanizio]
[Standing from left to right. - Matheus, Rangel and Romanizio]

Strictly speaking, discipleship ceremonies do not have "Honorable Witnesses", but there I was sitting next to my Si Hing Leonardo. Si Fu had given me the opportunity to give an opening lecture on the theme "Baai Si", so that I could become more involved. However, sitting there as a spectator in a more privileged place, I was very delighted with the disposition of the new disciples.
You know, it's been very common these past few years for someone to say "gratitude" to you. This never made much sense as it is a word in a disconnected tense. Alexander Rangel on the other hand, is someone who expresses gratitude in his every action and every interaction. Rangel treats you with such affection, that sometimes he hugs me and I freeze in the embrace thinking - "Why is he so grateful?" - Rangel's attitudes mobilize me to do better, after all, the gratitude that person expressed, should be honored.
Romanizio is someone I don't know very well, but I was very surprised to hear his words during the Ceremony, showing that he waited until the moment when he considered it worthwhile to take this very important step in the journey of a practitioner.
Matheus Azevedo also positively impacted me with his maturation in such a short time. It wasn't so much what he said, but the way he looked maybe.

Só me resta terminar dizendo “Gratidão”[risos].

A few days later, as expected, my Si Fu visited my Mo Gun in Méier wild neighborhood [PHOTO]. Before having with my students, we talked for about an hour. I met Si Fu  for the very first time when I was 15 years old, while he was 29 years old. After more than two decades of intense coexistence, some transformations no longer coincide. However, I was right when I planned this more reserved contact in the midst of so many commitments on the occasion of his visit to Brazil.
Si Fu left me very calm to follow the path with my Family that I believe to be the most appropriate, in this case remaining linked to "Moy Yat Ving Tsun Martial Intelligence" and not to the "Julio Camacho Institute". In family terms, we follow together, but I brought him my concern about what my peers would understand about my institutional decision. The feeling of turning left when he and all the other disciples are turning right was never easy. However, about this he commented: “I'm saying, Thiago: There's no problem. I just wonder, will you be able to do the same for a disciple of yours in the future?
I live well being "serious" while Si Fu lives well "with an incredible high spirits". And it's good that I have a Si Fu who respects these differences in choosing how to go about life. I can only end by saying “Gratitude” [laughs].

THE FIRST TIME I MET GM WILLIAM MOY

That year, I completed twenty uninterrupted years as a member of the Moy Yat Lineage. Over the decades, mainly from my Si Fu, I heard countless passages about Si Taai Gung Moy Yat. Some of these stories he himself was present, while in others, they were stories he had heard from Si Gung. And when Si Gung visited Rio, or I went to São Paulo, it was common to hear him quoting his own Si Fu Moy Yat.
All these stories delighted me a lot, as they always ended with some speech, action or gesture by the Patriarch, which demonstrated all his art and perspicacity. However, I had never heard stories told by his own son, my Si Baak Gung William Moy [PHOTO ABOVE].
In many of the photos I had contact with, Si Baak Gung William always looked very serious. It was only on one of Si Gung's birthdays, that he appeared in a tribute video, and to my surprise, he made a very funny joke in the footage. Everyone laughed, and that made me think he was cool.

During a period of two years, my Si Fu's eldest daughter, who is called Jade [PHOTO at right], decided to practice with me at MYVT Meier School, and that brought us closer together. Jade is my youngest Kung Fu sister, but she is also Si Fu's daughter. So several times, for something that I would bring to the attention of any other Kung Fu brother, I didn't know what to do about Jade. Once I decided to call Si Fu, because I couldn't figure out what to do. I had been with Jade on Wednesday, which was the day of the week she was in Méier wild neighborhood with me, but I well remember calling him one late Saturday afternoon, from inside my car. - "Use your Kung Fu" - He would have said in response.
At other times, some of my disciples who are now over twenty years old were teenagers like Jade at the time, and some were amazed to learn who she was - “Wow! Is she Si Fu's daughter?”- I remember Alexandre, mainly saying that [Laughs].
Regardless of not knowing what to do many times, I always tried to treat both Jade and Julinha [above photo in the left] with great affection, due to all their father's dedication to me. Being that in many of these opportunities, he stopped being with them to be with me, of course, The same for my Kung Fu brothers.

Then, on the occasion of the inauguration of the Moy Yat Institute in São Paulo, I finally got to meet Si Baak Gung William [PHOTO]. A lecture was scheduled and he arrived straight from the airport, he was holding these papers that helped him tell a little of his story, his father's story and the story of the two of them. In the end, I got the presentation script as a gift [PHOTO ABOVE], much thanks to my Si Gung.
It touched me a lot to hear his stories in the Kung Fu Family from him, and the whole challenge to understand the relationship with his father who was also his Si Fu. It struck me a lot in a certain story, the courage of Si Taai Gung Moy Yat when addressing him, showing that he would not stop being his Si Fu, to just be his father in that context. With that, I realized how difficult it seems to be "Si Fu's son", within the Martial Circle. However, his feeling of satisfaction when telling all these stories, showed his gratitude for everything he experienced.
I could also see that Si Baak Gung is really cool, in fact he seems to be always smiling and available to talk with great affection, everyone who approaches.
Since yesterday was his birthday, I decided to tell these fragments of memories.

YOU SHOULD NOT PLAY KUNG FU

[Com Si Gung e Si Baak Gung William]
[With Si Gung and Si Baak Gung William]

This is an article I write while listening to one of my favorite songs called “Roll with the changes” by REO Speedwagon. It's just that a lot of changes have happened in the last few months of my career, and this is a song that has accompanied me more often in my moments of reflection.
Last week we finalized another instrument of the Moy Yat Ving Tsun Martial Intelligence Program which was the Basic Level Moy Yat Genealogy Study. I participated with three of my students, and the whole process was conducted by Si Gung.
When I started to include my students in these studies, I was a little apprehensive. I couldn't understand if it was appropriate to be in these seminars with my students. However, Master Gabriel from Brasilia was asked if he thought that this configuration affected his relationship with his Si Fu, considering that both are always present in this kind of meeting. Master Gabriel was very assertive when he said that after everything he had lived with his Si Fu, it would not be the participation with him that would weaken his leadership. It was from this speech that I became aware that the greatest example was letting my students follow live over the weeks, my continuous search for a better understanding of the transmission of the System, without fear of my questions seeming basic or of getting it is clear that there is a more sophisticated approach to these and other instruments and that at some point, “we are left behind”.

[Brasilia, 2023]

However, it was in the last Meeting on Level 2 of the Ving Tsun Experience Program, that I had an even greater awareness of something that, in fact, was already clear to me...
Si Gung made a series of observations about the “Cham Kiu” Domain and its nuances, so that we could better understand how to work on Level 2. I couldn't believe what I was hearing from the beginning of that night... I was very touched by the level of depth in placements by Si Gung. He demonstrated a deep knowledge, never deviating from the subject. So you who are there until late at night, feel prestigious, because the references always funnel to the initial intention. With that, three days later as I watched two disciples practice Luk Dim Bun Gwan, I made a comment on a side issue, but immediately saw that it was unfounded. Because I am the Si Fu, there is a tendency for my disciples [especially the less experienced ones] to listen to me very carefully, but I realized there that I misused that attention. It was only 30 seconds maybe, but how many times can someone get hit in 30 seconds during a fight? I had taken 30 seconds of two people's lives for nothing.
We can't "play with Kung Fu"... At least, I'm starting to be less ignorant about how deep I could have already reach... That's why, when the word was passed to me, I commented that it wasn't the case of finding that I was doing a bad job, but that this work could be much better, if I could turn to it 100%... Taking into account that this is not an excuse, being able to expose my students to a network of people focused on this understanding refined has been key.

BEING SHY AND PRESENTING A PODCAST ABOUT VING TSUN AND KUNG FU

Resolvi basear minha carreira também no conceito de “Show Up”. Sempre procurei me fazer presente e expor meu trabalho.

In 2010 I used to jogging around the neighborhood listening to a coach who had a YouTube channel. I would download my favorite episodes, convert them to MP3 and listen on my MP3 player. The term “coach” wasn't talked about as much in recent years, but I loved Eric Thomas' energy and approach to life. Each episode spoke of a different theme that would help you improve your quality of life. And one of my favorite episodes was “Show Up”.
At the time, I understood the importance of “being present”, to achieve relevance. Later, I would learn the power of absence as well.
“Show Up” is about challenging yourself to show up, to be remembered. I don't mean “wanting to be the center of attention” in a negative way, but you know that basketball player who always appears in the decisive moments? He's not afraid to turn attention to him, which is why he stays relaxed even with everyone watching his every step.
I decided to base my career also on the concept of “Show Up”. I've always tried to make myself present and expose my work. Not because I like to be in the spotlight, but because I understand the importance of making yourself evident in the community you are a part of. On the other hand, if you go for a walk with me and introduce me to your group of friends, you'll probably see me mostly silent. It's just that I'm very shy.

For many years, I maintain this site that has had different names, the most remembered being “Blog do Pereira”. When I realized that the audience outside Brazil was infinitely superior, I followed my Master's suggestion to change the name until I reached this one. It so happened that in recent years, I decided to study more deeply the history of Masters who started their carreers with just a few students and consolidated their work not only in their countries, but also beyond their own borders. My Si Gung, Grand Master Leo Imamura, has said a lot that the professional who thinks his public is in his neighborhood is lost. With that, I began to delve into the history of Professor Jigoro Kano and the Kodokan. From his story, I got to know that of other exponents. People who gave their lives to maintain a legacy for future generations. And a podcast that touched me a lot with absurd content was “BUDOKAST”. Not only the presenters, but also the guests, gave real lessons about the life and work of these exponents. My favorite episodes were the ones about Kyuzo Mifune, Shiro Saigo and one about Kyudo. As I listened to them, the more inspired I was to do similar work, focused on Chinese arts. A podcast without jokes or childish behavior. Would be serious conversations, about serious matters. Matters, as I said above, that people dedicate their lives to perfection. And for that, they deserve respect.
Então acredito que o conceito do “Show Up”, necessita de propósito.

It was then that I decided to invite my Kung Fu brother Thiago Silva[photo left] to put this project into practice. Afterwards, we invited our Kung Fu brother Rodrigo Moreira [picture at right]. Finally, I called my student Daniel Eustáquio to help behind the scenes.
I had already received requests from students to do something similar, but it was just at some given lunch at Norte Shopping Mall, in the North Zone of Rio that when I had this idea suggested once again by a dear student, I thought it was time to put it to work. So in a short time we are already on air with episodes in English and Portuguese on Spotify and Youtube.
When I'm around people I've just met, I keep quiet, because there's no purpose in me that motivates me to go beyond my shyness. When I write or speak publicly about Ving Tsun, there is work to be done. I want to be able to leave a mark so that students of future generations can be proud and learn from. And by doing so, naturally bonds are created with people from Brazil and the world, who are part of the martial community.
So I believe that the concept of the “Show Up” needs a purpose.

I think Ving Tsun doesn't work for me... - An essay

At some point, maybe you've already said to yourself - "Hey! I think Ving Tsun doesn't work for me..." - This doubt arrives, because that initial reason that motivated us to make contact and then enroll, ends up taking us by storm on a random afternoon - “If I needed to, would I be able to defend myself?” - At this moment you don't find a very clear answer. If you are more curious, you ask a Si Hing, if you are more pessimistic, you convince yourself that you couldn't. And me? What did I do in those hours?
Few people fought as much as I did... Few people went through as many life and death fights as I did... They all occurred when I was returning from college, with my head against the window of the bus that took from 45 minutes to an hour to reach my destination. I imagined the most incredible fights happening, always to the sound of the music I was listening to on my Discman. Of course! I always won them all!
At the time, I had already had access to the entire Mui Fa Jong Domain, which is when you work with the “wooden dummy”... I was twenty-one years old, and I was only practicing weekly  “Maai Sang Jong”. However, a few years before, my doubts were many and I almost gave up...

This was the vision I had when I used to arrive at the door of the Mo Gun at the age of sixteen [PHOTO ABOVE], trying to pass with my bike, my backpack, with my headphones falling... stairs... I always wondered why I was there. I didn't understand what the "Chi Sau" was for, I didn't think I was getting "good at fighting", I had serious doubts about what I was actually learning, and usually when it arrived, everyone was doing some activity that almost always didn't have much to do. to do with practice.
I would change clothes, and sit next to the wooden doll by myself to read some manga while my class didn't start. Si Suk Ursula would appear and ask - "Thiago... We're talking back there, don't you want to stay with us there?" - She always invited me but I never accepted, despite that she kept inviting - "I'm staying right here." -I would answer And soon after someone showed up to teach me.
[Sentei-me com minha mãe nessas cadeiras quando fiz minha matrícula]
[I sat with my mother in these chairs when I enrolled]

At that time, there was an activity in the English language course in which you needed to speak your Hobby, and I said that I was practicing Kung Fu. A girl asked me how long I had been practicing and I replied that I had been practicing for two years. The whole class was amazed... I think it was strange for someone to do the same thing for two years without stopping. Inside, I had a strange feeling that my skill didn't match the time I was practicing. Even going twice a week. What was weirder, is that even though I wasn't as linked to Si Suk Ursula as I am today at that time, I already had a deep admiration for Si Suk André Cardoso and of course, for Si Fu.
At various times I did not enter the Mo Gun, I passed by with my bicycle and preferred to go play soccer, as I did not see progress and continued with the same question in my heart - “If I needed to, would I be able to defend myself?” - And I kept pedaling through the Tanque neighborhood. However, as I walked away, I felt, for some mysterious reason, failing with that nice guy who would one day become my Si Fu. In addition, Si Fu was very skilled and it made no sense for his skill to come from "Chi Sau"

Two years later, I still didn't know what I was really capable of. However, the constant practice of "Maai Sang Jong", made me come to a conclusion - "I think nothing evolves, but I'm going to go for it anyway."- I had already been practicing Ving Tsun for five uninterrupted years, and on any given beautiful day, Si Suk Felipe Soares entered with such a perfect palm on my forehead during a "Maai Sang Jong", that before he removed his hand I was already crying. I was wearing a helmet, and it was a super hit. I threw the helmet on the floor and went crying to the bathroom. Partly, I couldn't understand how Si Suk Felipe had gotten so good and I hadn't noticed. He had been helping with Mo Gun activities and participating in things that for me were distractions from what really mattered, which was practice.
When I left the bathroom, the other people continued practicing and there was a chair with a glass of water on top next to Si Fu. I sat beside him, crossed my ankles, shrugged my shoulders and drank water like a child. One thing then crossed my mind - "Maybe Ving Tsun doesn't work for me..."

[After leaving my bike on the stairs, I passed under this painting.
Nearly twenty years later, it would grace my own Kung Fu Family's Mo Gun]

Over time, I got involved in other activities that took place in the Mo Gun and in the Kung Fu Family. Due to a very great luck that accompanies me, events followed one another and I was recognized by my peers. Sometimes I received congratulations for a video I had made, other times for a post on this site, but deep down, after all these years, one question remained - "If I needed to, would I be able to defend myself?" - This question followed me, because I couldn't associate the ability I was developing in other areas and the first conquests I had, with the fighting ability I always wanted. - “If you get good at Kung Fu Life, you get good at the technical part. I have no doubts about that. However, the opposite does not happen” - Si Fu would have said.
[O dia do meu Baai Si]
[The day of my Baai Si]

Você deve estar querendo saber se eu ainda me faço a mesma pergunta, certo?

You must be wondering if I still ask myself the same question, right? This question is always there, somewhere in my heart, trying to make me doubt what I can or can't do. And maybe that's why I'm such a fan of formality. Because when the “human” has doubts, the “commitment” sustains. We make a commitment to organize ourselves to receive what Si Fu has to deliver. It's not an easy task, we all have internal demons that arise to get in the way of our trajectory. After a while, I understood that it would be a lack of consideration for what I was given, not believing in its potential. There is a difference between someone giving you something, you being able to receive it, and doing something with what you have received. I cannot accept the possibility of not making what I learned work in the most different circumstances. And although Si Fu always scolds me about it, I do believe that comparing myself to someone with greater excellence helps me to go further.
If I still think that Ving Tsun doesn't work for me? Well, I make it work and if it doesn't work, I pay the price.

VISIT BY MASTER FABIO GOMES TO MYVT MEIER SCHOOL

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of spending the afternoon with Master Fabio Gomes[PHOTO]. This disciple of Grand Master Leo Imamura, my Si Gung, decided to take on the challenge of adapting the logic of the Ving Tsun System to the needs of Special Operations Forces of Brazil.
In his own words, he always had an admiration for the work performed by these elite units. In 1999, the 1st Battalion of Special Forces of the Brazilian Army (military unit composed of Combatants and Special Forces Operators) was still located in Camboatá, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, a region close to one of his residences. At the time, driving by this military unit, the following question would have crossed his mind: “Why not try to develop work with Ving Tsun in the security area, starting with the 1st Battalion of Special Forces?

Yesterday afternoon, I had the good surprise of receiving my Si Suk Fabio Gomes at the Mo Gun of my Kung Fu Family. With him was Fabricio, who took the opportunity to do an experimental class with my student Daniel Eustáquio[PHOTO].
I was able to talk with Si Suk Fabio Gomes for more than an hour, about many topics of common interest, and from this conversation a very special project possibility arose. The idea came spontaneously from him, from the work I have been developing with Thiago Silva on our Podcast “Vida-Kung Fu” with its two programs: The homonym in Portuguese “Vida Kung Fu”, and the program totally in English called “ Kung Fu Coffee Break”[Both already on SPOTIFY]
This morning I woke up with the message that the project was confirmed!
In addition, it was possible for me to get to know a little more about Master Fabio Gomes and moments of his trajectory as a disciple of his Master Leo Imamura, and also as a contemporary of my Master Julio Camacho. I took the opportunity to ask about their legendary trip with Si Gung to Kentucky in the '90s and about their trip with Si Suk Marcello Abreu to Fatsan and Hong Kong in 2006. We ended the afternoon with an espresso in the already traditional Mr Roberto's Café Zoro, which is in our neighborhood.

GM LEO IMAMURA: STUDY OF GENEALOGY

There is a big difference between a fighting modality, and a System that has the potential to lead the practitioner to a better understanding of who he is, and his conduct in the world in which he lives. Your awareness does not come from a meditative state in a stationary position with all the undisturbed ambience, or through someone's speech. This process takes place through a cultivation resulting from dedication. What happens is that sometimes we have precarious practices, performed very well, by extremely skilled people. On the other hand, this type of scenario allows us to reflect on how hard we are dedicating ourselves to exploring what we are having access to. Otherwise, we will be mediocre practitioners before an excellent system like Ving Tsun.
I tend to think that there is nothing that a practitioner can experience on their journey, that some ancestor of their family tree, living or dead, has not already experienced.

The question that someone inattentive might ask is: “How can the Study of my Lineage help me to be a better fighter?”.
I am participating [once again] in a Genealogical Study with Grand Master Leo Imamura, my Si Gung. And it's not just any study... It's a basic level study. Many people associate my constant participation in this type of activity with my personal taste for genealogy... In fact, this year marks the thirteenth year that I haven't played soccer as a leisure activity. What was supposed to be a moment to relieve the stress of the week, became an activity with such exacerbated competition that it ended up containing even cursing. I thought I would earn more by doing two things I like: Getting more involved with Kung Fu Family activities on the weekends, and going out roller-skating listening to good music.
Despite this, as a professional, I have always seen the need to advance in search of more knowledge in order to equip myself with better conditions to approach, share and guide my students more efficiently. In this process, many conceptual doubts that a student brought me, I was able to answer based on what I had heard about the ancestors. When citing what I understood of a certain event, which coincided with the situation, the student realized that there was something greater than me that supported what he said.

Many people thought that the "Commodores" group was finished after Lionel Richie left in 1982. It turns out that three years later they released a wonderfully produced and performed song called "Nighshift". Ten years earlier, Bruce Springsteen asked to record one of his song  289 times for his legendary 1975 album “Born To Run”. Can you imagine the level of excellence he was aiming for? Yet last year, 40 years after Lionel Richie left the Commodores,  Springsteen covered the song "Nightshift."
With this kind of example, I understand that we must always seek excellence in everything we do and stay close to people who are in that same search. In this way, other people who seek this state of excellence will be able to recognize it in us too, just as Springsteen recognized it in the Commodores song of 1985. Therefore, regardless of our seniority and our titles, it is essential that we continue to study the Ving System Tsun.
I thought that my intention to always be in all possible seminars was a matter of insecurity with what I was capable of doing, but I heard from Si Gung in recent months about the importance of seeking a "support network" so that the knowledge come to us. With that, we don't limit our descendants only to what we know, but we use other powerful minds to add to this process.

It has been a very rewarding experience to be part of these Moy Yat Ving Tsun Program study groups since the time of the Lockdown. Everyone has been very patient with my doubts, especially Si Gung. There is an atmosphere of great respect - “...We have Master Pereira here with his 'hand raised'. So, Master Pereira. Goodnight!" -Si Gung usually says  in these ZOOM meetings. At these times I remember Si Fu: Once, not knowing how to conduct a very serious conversation with a student much older than me, he would have said: "Treat him like an adult and treat yourself like an adult". - So even though Si Gung met me when I was 14 to 15 years old, being called as “Master Pereira”, always reminds me of the importance of treating myself like an adult. And an adult who is a professional never stops studying.
