Breakfast after a year with my Master Julio Camacho

Muitos anos atrás, sentado com meu Mestre Julio Camacho dentro de seu antigo carro ZAFIRA, aguardávamos suas filhas descerem. Estávamos no condomínio Barra Bali na Zona Oeste do Rio, e era um agradável início de tarde. Enquanto assistíamos um senhor varrer o chão em silencio, ele concluiu uma fala sua, me chamando a seguinte reflexão:  “...Thiago, quando duas pessoas se conhecem muito jovens, são tantas as transformações, que é muito raro quando as transformações de ambos coincidem...”

Many years ago, sitting with my Master Julio Camacho inside his old ZAFIRA car, we were waiting for his daughters to get out. We were at the Barra Bali condominium in the West Zone of Rio, and it was a pleasant early afternoon. While we were watching a gentleman sweep the floor in silence, he concluded his speech, calling me the following reflection: “...Thiago, when two people get to know each other very young, there are so many transformations, that it is very rare when the transformations of both coincide...”

Depois de muito tempo poderia estar novamente com meu Mestre Julio Camacho e sua esposa, a Sra Marcia Camacho. Porém, não seria naquele Sábado de Maio. Eu havia me programado para estar com Si Fu em momentos mais reservados desta vez, fosse durante sua entrevista no meu PODCAST “Vida Kung Fu”[E por conseguinte, nos desdobramentos desta] ou em sua visita ao Núcleo Méier. E foi graças a um divertido mal entendido, que decidi ir ao seu encontro. Se tratava de um café da manhã nas dependências do condomínio do Mestre Leonardo Reis, meu “Si Hing”, com outros membros seniores da Família Moy Jo Lei Ou. Preferi chegar mais cedo, para ter a oportunidade de ler um livro que ganhei de presente do meu irmão Kung Fu Fabiano Silva sobre “Karate”. Como sei que a ambiência do condomínio é muito agradável pela manhã, já tinha tudo planejado! Porém, ao estacionar o carro, junto comigo estacionou também o Rafael Romanizio, um dos discipulandos que faria “Baai Si” naquela manhã. Trocamos algumas palavras e caminhamos juntos até um outro local, onde seria a Cerimonia. Eu não sabia que o pessoal já estaria por lá, então enquanto o Rafael falava, me peguei refletindo sobre essa estranha sensação de “não fazer parte da organização”.  Participei da organização de muitos eventos, desde 2006 quando tive uma conversa com o Mestre Felipe Soares, meu querido “Si Suk”, que mudou para sempre a minha visão sobre a importância de participar das coisas. Porém, agora em 2023, já com minha Família Kung Fu, havia chegado a hora de promover isso a uma próxima geração, sem deixar de me disponibilizar para minha própria Família, quando requisitado. 

After a long time, I could be with my Master Julio Camacho and his wife, Mrs. Marcia Camacho, again. However, it would not be that Saturday of May. I had scheduled myself to be with Si Fu at more private moments this time, whether during his interview on my PODCAST “Vida Kung Fu” [And therefore, in its aftermath] or on his visit to the MYVT Méier School. And it was thanks to an amusing misunderstanding that I decided to go and meet him. It was breakfast in the condominium of Master Leonardo Reis, my “Si Hing”, with other senior members of the Moy Jo Lei Ou Family. I preferred to arrive earlier, to have the opportunity to read a book that I got as a gift from my Kung Fu brother Fabiano Silva about “Karate”. As I know that the ambience of the condominium is very pleasant in the morning, I had everything planned! However, when parking the car, Rafael Romanizio, one of the new disciples who would perform “Baai Si” that morning, also parked with me. We exchanged a few words and walked together to another location, where the ceremony would take place. I didn't know that the staff would already be there, so while Rafael was speaking, I found myself reflecting on this strange feeling of “not being part of the organization of the ceremony”. I participated in the organization of many events, since 2006 when I had a conversation with Master Felipe Soares, my dear “Si Suk”, who forever changed my view on the importance of participating in Kung Fu Family moments beyond practice. However, now in 2023, already with my Kung Fu Family, the time had come to promote this to the next generation, without ceasing to make myself available to my own Family, when requested.

Depois de um tempo conversando com o Si Hing Leonardo e o Thiago Silva, caminhamos em direção ao local que seria o café da manhã. Chegando lá apenas eu e Thiago, percebemos que o Si Fu, Si Mo e Roberto Viana[que havia buscado ambos na residência da Sra Vera Camacho, a quem chamamos carinhosamente de “Si Taai”], já estavam lá. Si Fu como sempre estava muito bem humorado, e elogiou a maneira que estávamos vestidos. A maneira bem-humorada que o Si Fu leva a vida, para mim é sempre desconcertante. Certa vez ele me disse que “um bom discípulo aprende mesmo quando o Si Fu não tinha a intenção de passar nada”, e acho que em momentos assim eu posso aprender um pouco. Meu Si Hing Leonardo sempre implica comigo quando me encontra pela manhã, devido a eu estar sempre sério. De fato, por vezes estou com o pensamento no desafio seguinte, no problema seguinte, etc... E isso me faz ficar mais sério. Antes eu achava que eu não era bem humorado, depois eu percebi que de fato não sou. Então ver Si Fu curtindo o momento, me traz a reflexão da necessidade de praticar mais o “Siu Nim Tau”. Afinal, você pode estar sério, mas com a mente no presente.

After talking for a while with Si Hing Leonardo and Thiago Silva, we walked towards the breakfast spot. Arriving there, just Thiago and I, we realized that Si Fu, Si Mo and Roberto Viana [who had picked them up at Mrs Vera Camacho's residence, whom we affectionately call "Si Taai"], were already there. Si Fu, as always, was in a very good mood, and praised the way we were dressed. The good-mood way that Si Fu leads life is always disconcerting for me. He once told me that "a good disciple learns even when Si Fu didn't intend to pass anything on", and I think that in moments like this I can learn a little. My Si Hing Leonardo always teases me when he meets me in the morning, because I'm always serious. In fact, sometimes I'm thinking about the next challenge, the next problem, etc... And that makes me more serious. Before I thought I wasn't so serious, then I realized that in fact I'm . So, seeing Si Fu enjoying the moment brings me a reflection on the need to practice more “Siu Nim Tau” . After all, you can be serious, but with your mind in the present.

A rigor, Cerimonias de discipulado não contam com “Testemunhas Honoráveis”, mas lá estava eu sentado ao lado do meu Si Hing Leonardo. Si Fu havia me dado a oportunidade de fazer uma palestra de abertura sobre o tema “Baai Si”, de maneira com que eu pudesse me fazer mais inserido. Porém, sentado ali como um espectador num lugar mais privilegiado, fiquei muito encantado com a disposição dos novos discípulos. 

Sabe, tem estado na moda nos últimos anos alguém falar para você “gratidão”. Isso nunca fez muito sentido, pois é uma palavra em um tempo verbal desconectado. O Alexander Rangel por outro lado, é alguém que expressa a gratidão em cada ação sua e em cada interação. O Rangel trata você com um carinho tão grande, que as vezes ele me abraça e eu fico meio congelado dentro do abraço pensando - “Por que ele está tão agradecido?”- As atitudes do Rangel me mobilizam a fazer melhor, afinal a gratidão que essa pessoa expressa, deveria ser honrada. 

O Romanizio é alguém que eu não conheço muito, mas fiquei muito admirado ao escutar suas palavras durante a Cerimonia, mostrando que esperou até o momento em que julgasse válido dar esse passo tão importante dentro da jornada de um praticante. 

Por fim, o Matheus Azevedo também me impactou positivamente com o seu amadurecimento em tão pouco tempo. Não foi muito por aquilo que ele disse, mas pelo seu jeito talvez. 

Strictly speaking, discipleship ceremonies do not have "Honorable Witnesses", but there I was sitting next to my Si Hing Leonardo. Si Fu had given me the opportunity to give an opening lecture on the theme "Baai Si", so that I could become more involved. However, sitting there as a spectator in a more privileged place, I was very delighted with the disposition of the new disciples.

You know, it's been very common these past few years for someone to say "gratitude" to you. This never made much sense as it is a word in a disconnected tense. Alexander Rangel on the other hand, is someone who expresses gratitude in his every action and every interaction. Rangel treats you with such affection, that sometimes he hugs me and I freeze in the embrace thinking - "Why is he so grateful?" - Rangel's attitudes mobilize me to do better, after all, the gratitude that person expressed, should be honored.

Romanizio is someone I don't know very well, but I was very surprised to hear his words during the Ceremony, showing that he waited until the moment when he considered it worthwhile to take this very important step in the journey of a practitioner.

Matheus Azevedo also positively impacted me with his maturation in such a short time. It wasn't so much what he said, but the way he looked maybe.

 

Alguns dias depois, conforme previsto, meu Si Fu visitou meu Mo Gun no bairro do Méier[FOTO]. Antes de ter com meus alunos, conversamos por cerca de uma hora. Conheci o Si Fu quando tinha 15 anos de idade, enquanto ele tinha 29 anos de idade. Após mais de duas décadas de convivência intensa, algumas transformações passaram a não mais coincidir. Porém, eu estava certo quando planejei esse contato mais reservado em meio a tantos compromissos por ocasião de sua visita ao Brasil. 

Si Fu me deixou muito tranquilo para seguir o caminho com minha Família que acredito ser o mais apropriado, nesse caso me mantendo vinculado a  “Moy Yat Ving Tsun Martial Intelligence” e não ao “Insituto Julio Camacho”.  Em termos familiares, seguimos juntos, mas levei a ele minha preocupação em relação ao que meus pares entenderiam sobre minha decisão institucional. A sensação de virar para o lado esquerdo quando ele e todos os outros discípulos estão virando a direita, nunca foi fácil. Porém, sobre isso ele comentou: “Eu estou dizendo, Thiago: Não tem problema algum. Apenas me pergunto, se você será capaz de fazer o mesmo por um discípulo seu no futuro”.

Eu vivo bem sendo “sério” enquanto o Si Fu vive bem “com um incrível alto astral”. E que bom que eu tenho um Si Fu que respeita essas diferenças de escolha de como seguir a vida. Só me resta terminar dizendo “Gratidão”[risos].

A few days later, as expected, my Si Fu visited my Mo Gun in Méier wild neighborhood [PHOTO]. Before having with my students, we talked for about an hour. I met Si Fu  for the very first time when I was 15 years old, while he was 29 years old. After more than two decades of intense coexistence, some transformations no longer coincide. However, I was right when I planned this more reserved contact in the midst of so many commitments on the occasion of his visit to Brazil.

Si Fu left me very calm to follow the path with my Family that I believe to be the most appropriate, in this case remaining linked to "Moy Yat Ving Tsun Martial Intelligence" and not to the "Julio Camacho Institute". In family terms, we follow together, but I brought him my concern about what my peers would understand about my institutional decision. The feeling of turning left when he and all the other disciples are turning right was never easy. However, about this he commented: “I'm saying, Thiago: There's no problem. I just wonder, will you be able to do the same for a disciple of yours in the future?”

I live well being "serious" while Si Fu lives well "with an incredible high spirits". And it's good that I have a Si Fu who respects these differences in choosing how to go about life. I can only end by saying “Gratitude” [laughs].
