New Legends of Kung Masters

(Si Fu speaks details of Biu Ji to me during practice at the beach.
In the background, it is possible to see Si Suk Ursula)

E isso me mantinha ainda praticando.
- Tentei dizer alguma coisa, mas me faltaram palavras.
Ele sempre me golpeava sem me dar chances.

It was an afternoon any of a weekday in 2003, I was walking towards Si Fu's house. I was 19 and Si Fu had invited me to have a coffee with him in his own house, which at the time was an apartment in a tall green building on the Pau-Ferro Road in Jacarepaguá.

I always questioned Ving Tsun (Wing Chun) from 15 to 19 years old: "Hey, does this work?" - I thought - But in the same proportion that questioned the System, I never questioned Si Fu. And that kept me practicing.

Arriving at his house, he opened the door wearing a Moy Yat Ving Tsun's uniform and with a smile invited me inside. Jade, his daughter, was playing in a corner and we sat at a small table and began to eat. Gradually I got into the subject. There was a situation between me and a person and a possible confrontation could not be avoided sooner or later. - "Thinking about it now, I miss this kind of concern! It was way better than the credit card bill! "- As always I was surprised when Si Fu said as he ate the bread in a friendly mixture of seriousness and tranquility:" Okay, if you want, I'll turn you into a fighter! "- I tried to say something, but I was short of words. Since 1988 when I started to enjoy martial arts I expected to hear something like that! Perhaps realizing that he had muted me, Si Fu went on: "Now you are in Mui Fa Jong. If you brought me that theme two months ago, when you were in Biu Ji, I would answer something else!" - Hey! I could only be dreaming!

Si Fu got up and asked me to join him, he stood barefoot on the living room carpet, and Jade stopped what she was doing to look. I froze at him who said, "I'll show you some techniques you already know, in a version that may be new to you." - Si Fu demonstrated a simple "Pak Da" and a "Lap Sau". And it hit me with awesome speed and impact! I felt it on my back! With a silly grin on my face, Si Fu asked me to hold him and he showed at least 3 different ways to let go using only the "Huen Sau". He stressed that any technique in Ving Tsun could be used objectively. He  beat me without giving me a chance.

I could barely hold myself from the inside, and as we sat down again, we combined a period of special training, in which the focus would be only "combat": "Important to know, that this also includes being hit. Without getting hurt one can not learn to fight"- I did not care! And we scored that series of training sessions.

E envelhecendo dia após dia, vi as responsabilidades aumentando...

The next morning of the first day, I went to college with my mouth cut and bruised. I had the left side of my face purple and swollen, had been hit by Si Suk Diego the night before. But it was all partying at that moment! My college friends asked me what had happened, and I said I fell off my bike.
In the end, I did not have to fight the guy who took me to look for Si Fu (photo), and over time, this theme started to become less attractive to me. I've never felt invincible, and I doubt anyone would feel that way. And aging day by day, I saw the responsibilities increasing ...

(My grandfather observes me at the entrance of the Jacarepaguá School, after receiving my "Siu Nim Tau" certificate and receiving access to "Cham Kiu" in July 2000)

After my grandfather died, a lot of bad things happened. In those moments, I saw the need to use Kung Fu in another way. After all, you can not beat bad times. Just go through them. And there lies the biggest lesson that Si Fu could have given me, which was worth all those special training: "You just have to survive Thiago. Survive, to give time for this to pass."

It may be a debt that does not stop growing, a newfound illness, your kids with problems, or have lost a great love ... All these and many others are problems that can take us completely, and if we do not know how to defend ourselves, We will be dragged forever by them. Therefore, it seems to me that the best defense is not the attack, but "to survive", "to survive" until the next cycle.

Ving Tsun and Self-Defense (Ving Tsun e Defesa Pessoal)

(Si Baak Nataniel Rosa golpeia Si Suk Fabio Gomes durante demonstração no BOPE)

A lógica grega divide as coisas entre teórica e prática. E assim, concebemos qualquer ideia relacionada as artes marciais.

The Greek logic divides things between theory and practice. And so, we conceive any idea related to the martial arts . When we see a movement of Ving Tsun at first, we try to associate it with some "practical situation" in which it could be used. That may seem to work at times, but most our search for "meaning" in what we do, distance us of the "evidence" that a particular movement, or as we call, device, port inside itself.

When we speak of "self-defense" to a layman, or even an inexperienced practitioner of martial arts. Possibly comes to his head a move that will ensure his physical well being in a crisis situation. This kind of stereotyped thinking occurs, according to Geoffrey York in "Battling the Clichés in Birthplace of Kung Fu", because the concept of "Kung Fu" in the West is basically known through films. And in this movie realm, Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee and Jet Li are considered Masters with their skills to defend thenselves physically.

Fortunately, we were treated to the franchise "Ip Man", which shows a Master of Kung Fu, wrapped in problems of everyday life such as lack of money, illness and relationship problems. Ip Man, not from real life, but from the films. It is a kind of modern "Spider-Man" : A hero who has the same problems as the audience, causing it to identify more with him.

In the movies about "Ip Man", we see Ip Man with a different attitude is to avoid confrontation at all costs. For the character knows, as an experienced martial artist. That between fantasy that often leads us to a martial practice for the first time, and the reality that can lead us to death. There is a big difference.
So it is dangerous to speak of "self defense techniques." For, when speaking "techniques", gives to understand that it will be effective in what it proposes, regardless of the context in which it is used.

So, Grand Master Leo Imamura (photo) talks about the importance of the role of anticipation when it comes to "self-defense" (physical). "The self-defense, mainly for civil people,  is in the previous stage to the moment of conflict "- says Si Gung in an interview.
This means that rather than think about how to react when the situation is already happening, think of danger when it is still immanent. For if you think about how to defend after the situation happens, you will always be at a disadvantage because the attacker in an assault situation for example, already knows where he will strike.
- perguntou ele. Meu sorriso respondia por mim.

When I met Si Fu (photo), during what we call the "Individualized Presentation" at the same location the photo above:former Tindiba School in Rio de Janeiro. Noticing my lack of interest in what he was talking about on Ving Tsun, and my desire to see some action. He invited me to get up because he was going to show me something. He knew that I had practiced a Korean martial art for a year and a half and said bluntly: "  Kick me " I was abused enough to do it, but sympathized with Si Fu since at first glance and asked, "What Kick?" . He then replied: "Anyone."
So I kicked, and Si Fu, who at the time was patient enough for this type of demonstration, with only one leg approached the kick, turned me on my own axis and driving me back to him, placed a palm on my nape: "Cool right?" - He asked. My smile answered for me.
(Thats me, just one month before my first meeting with Si Fu in my life)

With time, I understood what my Si Fu spoke a few times about when we need, the Kung Fu appears. And knowing the pain that a punch does when we are beaten for real, and know the responsibility that we have when we hit someone. I have no fantasies about fights and duels in my daydreams.
Understanding my responsibility as a descendant of the Lineage Moy Yat, I was always looking to anticipate the possible situations of physical confrontation. Although often I have heard or experienced things that I did not like to live or to hear. And at other times, few indeed, but I was physically attacked after I started practicing and I preferred to let it go.
At such times, always remember what Si Gung once said: "What hurts is not the punch, is the ego."
