Learning to use the "Baat Jaam Do" with Grand Master Leo Imamura.

Ele deu a possibilidade, eu aceitei e me preparei nos dias seguintes. Se ele mostrasse, eu aprenderia, eu tinha me comprometido.

At times, Si Gung would look at me with raised eyebrows. Sometimes, he seemed dismayed, and other times, surprised by my incompetence[Photo above]. In reality, he didn't say anything; these were just projections of mine onto him. The truth is that, at a certain point, he finally stood up and demonstrated a movement, helped guide one of the knives, showed me again, and I simply couldn't execute it. My disciple, Lucas Eustáquio, watched silently from the back of the room. Lucas has been witnessing this entire process with Si Gung. I don't mind, because in a world where resilience is so low, I hope Lucas sees me making mistakes and trying again. After all, a pact was made with Si Gung days before that lesson. He provided the opportunity, I accepted, and prepared myself in the following days. If he showed, I would learn; I had committed myself. It was already 1:00 PM, and we hadn't stopped since 10:00 AM... Finally, Si Gung grabbed a cane, walked across the room to where I was, and without saying a word, began to mobilize the knives. I could feel when I was about to take a blow with the cane; it was live, no excuses. However, I also noticed when the knives fit into place. Later, Lucas would say he found that moment very emblematic exactly because of the facts I described, but he couldn't understand what had changed for me to succeed. Neither could I. Moments later, there I was experiencing my newfound awareness while moving, now with a better understanding. Lucas was with Charles [a student of Master Felipe Soares] sitting next to Si Gung on the other end. Master Felipe Soares himself was also there providing assistance. But as I moved, at a certain point, I was shocked by what Si Gung had just done. He came to me seemingly aware of what needed to be done to lead me to an understanding of the movement. Without speaking, without giving hints, without taking the knives and demonstrating for me to see... It was simply incredible. I wondered how long it took him to reach that level of mobilization and how much it could help the members of my family if I could understand how to act like that.

[Preparo do  Jing Sau Do 正手刀]
[Preparing the  Jing Sau Do 正手刀]

Later that day, Si Gung seemed to anticipate my concerns. He said, "You need to develop your own Kung Fu, not just keep copying me..." I countered, "But if your way is so good, why can't I just copy as best I can?" - Si Gung insisted on the point that everyone needs to develop their own Kung Fu at some point. I also insisted on what I believed - "...I still don't understand the 'Lei' phase of the System, so for now, I think it's okay to do it your way...". The subject ended, and we sat in the lobby of his parents' building waiting for them to come down. During practice with the knives, it also seemed to me that he could read my thoughts. I needed to spin the knives in a movement called Jing Sau Do 正手刀. I started doing this movement by spinning the knives with the tips away from my body. Si Gung shouted from the other end of the room, asking what I was doing. Realizing that I wouldn't be able to understand alone, he got up with his cane and positioned it alongside my body. He then asked me to perform the entire movement without the tip leaving the cane. I was using metal knives, and after understanding the logic of that movement, I realized how much I lacked refined control over the use of knives. At that moment, I thought - "Maybe it's better to use nylon knives..."-  My performance was below what it could be, but another thought occurred to me - "...But it would be a shame to use nylon knives at this point..."-  That's when Si Gung, without taking his eyes off his notebook screen, asked - "Thiago, don't you want to get the nylon knives?"-  Without responding, I just ran and grabbed a pair. And the improvement was gradual from there.

It was seven hours and forty-three minutes of practice. At times, I thought it was over, but it was as if Si Gung let me keep everything just to say, "...What happened? Tired? Want to stop already?" - This happened because most of the time Si Gung remained silent. In moments like these, you need to understand whether to continue, to stop, or what to do... These lessons with Si Gung are like a game from an old video game: you rented the game on Friday and had to finish it by Monday because you had to return it. Back then, you couldn't save your progress and pick up where you left off. If your mother called you for lunch, you had to turn it off and start all over again. So, I try to keep my level of attention and determination always at the maximum, so that I don't miss the opportunity to extract the most from the experience. I had prepared myself to be there, but at a certain point Si Gung would have said - "...Let's see the second part now..."- He paused and continued - "...Although I'm not sure if you'll be able to pass it..."[PHOTO ABOVE]-  Si Gung paused his speech, walked in silence with his arms by his side without moving them as he usually does, and when he sat down, he concluded - "...But it's okay... Just the first part is already enough... You can keep practicing it, it will be more than good enough..." - This possibility didn't exist for me.
[Si Gung steps back, reflecting on whether I will be able to progress beyond the 2nd part.]

We took a break for lunch; Lucas and Charles went ahead as the restaurant queue was long. When they informed us they had secured a table, we stopped the practice for the first time and drove to meet them at the restaurant. On the way, I mentioned to Si Gung an episode involving two Kendo practitioners, which I became aware of in 2020. At the time, the senior, an experienced Master, after practicing a little with the younger one who wanted to interview him, reportedly said that the interviewer wouldn't be able to understand the topic he wanted to inquire about. That story struck a chord with me, and when Si Gung heard it, he laughed heartily, understanding what the Kendo Master meant by it. I then commented that part of the skill lies in observing once and executing immediately afterward. Si Gung agreed - "...Yes... Seeing it just once should be enough..."

E o quanto a frieza é importante.

At a certain point, the practice demanded that I refrain from an excessive reaction to what was happening. As these are highly sophisticated movements, a centimeter more or less is what determines whether you'll protect yourself or be struck by the opponent's weapon. It was very special to observe the coherence behind each part of the list. And how crucial composure is. Si Gung, even when trying to help, you had to be attentive to grasp what he was saying without him uttering a word. I witnessed how he takes the idea of "silent transmission" to the utmost, which, as he mentioned on another occasion, reaches its peak in the "Baat Jaam Do"'s nature. At times, I didn't believe I could progress beyond a certain point, but Si Gung's mobilization ability led me to a sudden understanding that enabled me to continue reasonably.

We ended the day with a very special dinner with Si Gung's parents. It took us a few tries to find the restaurant. Even after nearly eight hours of study, Si Gung seemed as if he had just woken up full of energy, as he spoke to his parents with all possible attention and presence. I, at various moments, got lost in thought and returned to the practice. At some point between practice and dinner, Si Gung reportedly said - "...Today you've elevated to a new level, now you need to keep studying..."-  The dinner took place at a wonderful and cozy Japanese restaurant. Our time there passed quickly, and Si Gung seemed to still have work to do. So, the three of us - Si Gung, Lucas, and I - returned to the Institute because Master Felipe Soares and his To Dai had bid farewell at the end of the practice. The three of us remained, and we had a conversation full of learning. It was quite a day, where every second was worth it. I went to bed with a clear conscience that night, as I also felt that I had reached a new level.

How to "cut off"": A Baat Jaam Do Story

Si Fu often asks his disciples about their clear positioning, which we have not always been able to do. According to him, there is no neutrality, one´s own presence affectes the scenario, so also, the importance of positioning oneself. I can cite as an example the Chinese language, which does not have a very clear active and passive voice, it leaves, in most cases, this indecisive difference, and describes the operations not so much of the "agent" but the "operation". According to François Jullien: "... The thing that carries me in this way is not due to me, nor is it suffered for me; it is neither me nor not I, But rather passes through me ... ...".

When we begin in "Baat Jaam Do," we clearly do not understand that we have a sharp object in our hands. Of course, we know that it is two knives, but the correct intention in its use is not undertaken. So from the opponent's distance, the approach of the other weapon that invests against you and the energy imprinted in the movements, they completely unmasked you, showing that you are still a beginner with "Free Hands" in the head.

(With Vladimir Anchieta, the day we migrated from

I had the good fortune to start the Baat Jaam Do Domain together with to my Brother Kung Fu and personal friend, Vladimir Anchieta. That night, on our first time allocated in the Blue Sky building in Barra da Tijuca, Si Fu told us about the importance of cutting in Baat Jaam Do, among many other things: "Baat Jaam Do is good, because it helps us to cut off what does not Serves us more. "

It is said that the "Baat Jaam Do" has eight possible cut lines, considering this possibility, we would have 8 + 1. When you follow a line, eight more possibilities would be created. Therefore, when approaching the opponent's weapon, it should be done with mastery, because the pressure applied on the instrument, can generate the propensity of an attack with another part of the weapon or make it go in another direction.
There were two men named Formião and Brásidas in ancient Greece, they used the calculation to deduce a coming situation from the various elements of the conjuncture, this process was called "logisms". They put together as much data as possible, and work out hypotheses to stop at the most likely one. Now, is not it what we do in our day to day life?

How many times, when we are faced with a need for decision, do we make small calculations to help us decide which way to go? Often we convince ourselves and we go down a path that is not legitimate. Therefore, the Chinese strategists did not conjecture or enter into calculations, according to Professor Jullien- "All their art, on the contrary, is to detect as early as possible the smallest tendencies that are made manifest: Upon detecting them as soon as they begin To orient oneself in secret, the uninterrupted course of things, before they have had the time to emerge and to manifest their effects, the person is in a position to predict what they are leading to, coinciding with the activation of these tendencies, he anticipates Your upgrade. "

Among so many potential benefits, I believe Baat Jaam Do will help us to be more careful about what direction we take in our lives because we may be able to anticipate future trends with its practice. Knowing that no action of ours, including our lack of action, goes unnoticed and neutral, we need to position ourselves!
Last but not least: If you can monitor a development process to the point of being able to "cut it off", be a bond, a job, or something that you do not need anymore ... You will have courage enough to do it when the time comes?
