MYI's President Paulo: Leadership Beyond the Role

Em 1994, apenas duas pessoas possuíam uma bola de futebol no colégio onde eu estudava, em Rocha Miranda: eu e o querido Bruno Koschek. Como fui o primeiro a ter uma bola, acabei exercendo certa liderança entre os outros alunos. A minha era uma humilde bola “dente de leite”. Quando Bruno apareceu com uma bola oficial, porém, perdi imediatamente aquela posição de destaque.

Nesse mesmo período, lembro-me com carinho da professora Eliane, a querida “Tia Eliane”, escrevendo um bilhete na agenda para minha mãe: “Parabéns, seu filho é um líder nato”. O que ela não sabia era que eu era o dono da bola (risos).

Mas fica a pergunta: o que Tia Eliane diria do Presidente do Instituto Moy Yat se ele fosse seu aluno?

Conviver com o Mestre Sênior Paulo Camiz no contexto de membro do Board do Instituto Moy Yat tem sido uma experiência singular para observar uma grande capacidade de liderança em ação. Recentemente, estive conversando sobre isso com o Grão-Mestre Leo Imamura.

Essa percepção voltou recentemente após uma reunião com o Mestre Paulo e o Mestre Sênior Tiago Quintela, Diretor do Global Headquarters do Moy Yat Ving Tsun Safeguard Group em Abu Dhabi. O encontro tratava de um projeto que estamos desenvolvendo e que também conta com a participação do Mestre Sênior Felipe Soares e do Grão-Mestre Leo.

Mais uma vez, algo me chamou profundamente a atenção. A cada desafio apresentado, a cada obstáculo levantado ou situação que exigia uma solução, o Mestre Sênior Paulo parecia ter sempre uma palavra, uma frase ou uma perspectiva capaz de direcionar a conversa para possibilidades e caminhos viáveis. Sua mentalidade fazia as coisas avançarem.

Depois de observar ele fazer isso algumas vezes durante a reunião, passei a prestar atenção de forma mais cuidadosa. Parece ser uma forma particular de enxergar as situações. Parecia que sua mente operava naturalmente nessa direção de uma perspectiva positiva.

Então pedi a palavra e apresentei uma situação específica, solicitando sua orientação. Na verdade, meu interesse não estava na resposta. Eu queria observar como ele construiria o raciocínio. No fundo, eu já intuía que, onde eu enxergava uma dificuldade, ele provavelmente enxergaria uma possibilidade.

E isso continua sendo algo que me impressiona profundamente.

In 1994, only two people owned a football(Soccer ball) in the school I attended in Rocha Miranda wild neighbourhood: myself and the dear Bruno Koschek. As I was the first to have one, I naturally assumed a certain leadership role amongst the other classmates. Mine was a humble “milk-tooth” football, as we used to call it. However, when Bruno arrived with an official "Teresa Herrera" ball (Soccer ball), I immediately lost that position of prominence.

During that same period, I fondly remember my teacher, the beloved “Auntie Eliane”, writing a note in my school diary to my mother: “Congratulations, your son is a natural leader.” What she did not know was that I happened to be the owner of the ball (laughs).

This raises an interesting question: what would Auntie Eliane say about the President of the Moy Yat Institute if he had been one of her students?

Having the opportunity to work alongside Senior Master Paulo Camiz as a member of the Board of the Moy Yat Institute has been a unique experience in observing leadership in action. Recently, I found myself discussing this very subject with Grandmaster Leo Imamura.

This perception resurfaced following a recent meeting involving Master Paulo, Senior Master Tiago Quintela, Director of the Moy Yat Ving Tsun Safeguard Group Global Headquarters in Abu Dhabi, and myself. The meeting concerned a project we are currently developing, which also includes the participation of Senior Master Felipe Soares and Grandmaster Leo.

Once again, something caught my attention quite profoundly. With every challenge presented, every obstacle raised, or every situation requiring a solution, Senior Master Paulo always seemed to have a word, a phrase, or a perspective capable of steering the conversation towards possibilities and practical paths forward. His mindset helped things move ahead.

After observing him do this several times throughout the meeting, I began paying closer attention. It appeared to be a particular way of perceiving situations. His mind seemed naturally inclined towards a constructive and positive perspective.

I then asked to speak and presented a specific situation, requesting his guidance. In truth, my interest was not really in the answer itself. I wanted to observe how he would build his line of reasoning. Deep down, I already suspected that where I saw a difficulty, he would most likely see a possibility.

And that remains something that continues to impress me deeply.

Mestre Paulo também nunca pressiona ninguém. Às vezes, uma pendência se apresenta e reaparece por mais de uma semana nas reuniões, e ele a trata com muita tranquilidade. Isso também tem sido muito importante para mim, porque, em muitas dessas situações, eu as teria percebido como uma urgência quando, na verdade, não eram. Dessa forma, essa convivência tem me ajudado a repensar e buscar refinar minha capacidade de avaliação de cenários.

Mestre Paulo também é extremamente solícito e flexível em sua agenda e naquilo com que pode contribuir para todos. Acho isso muito importante porque, da minha parte, quando algo me é solicitado, seja cortar a grama do Instituto ou realizar alguma atividade de natureza mais administrativa, procuro encarar sempre como uma oportunidade.

Acredito que nos damos bem por isso, porque o vejo em uma busca sincera por acolher as limitações de cada pessoa. Recentemente, ele precisou solicitar a mudança do horário da reunião semanal. Como a alteração não era viável para todos os membros, imediatamente propôs uma terceira alternativa, e a reunião acabou acontecendo com a presença de todos, ainda que eu saiba que ele próprio tenha precisado fazer ajustes para isso.

Por esse motivo, considero que o Mestre Paulo possui uma mentalidade voltada para soluções o tempo todo, uma capacidade de gerir pessoas que é realmente impressionante e uma habilidade de apresentação pessoal, como não demonstrar fadiga, por exemplo, que considero admirável.

Tem sido uma oportunidade única aprender com ele. Diferentemente dos meus amigos de infância, que me respeitavam porque eu era o dono da bola, os membros do Board demonstram admiração pela forma como o Mestre Paulo tem ocupado a posição de presidente de maneira tão impressionante. Da mesma forma, tenho certeza de que seus pares na medicina o reconhecem e o respeitam como médico.

Trata-se de um brilho que vai além da função. E considero importante aprender como atuar nesse nível de liderança também. Pelo menos, isso representa um pouco das conversas que tenho com o Si Gung sobre tudo o que venho observando na posição de Secretário-Geral.

Master Paulo never pressures anyone. At times, an unresolved matter arises and continues to reappear in meetings for more than a week, yet he handles it with remarkable calmness. This has also been very important for me because, in many of these situations, I would have perceived them as urgent when, in reality, they were not. As a result, this experience has helped me rethink and refine my ability to assess situations more accurately.

Master Paulo is also extremely helpful and flexible with his schedule and with whatever contribution he can make for others. I believe this is very important because, for my part, whenever something is requested of me, whether it is mowing the Institute’s grass or carrying out a more administrative task, I always try to view it as an opportunity.

I believe we work well together because I see in him a sincere effort to accommodate each person’s limitations. Recently, he needed to request a change to the weekly meeting schedule. As the proposed change was not feasible for all members, he immediately suggested a third alternative, and the meeting ultimately took place with everyone present, even though I know he himself had to make adjustments in order to make it happen.

For this reason, I consider that Master Paulo possesses a mindset that is constantly focused on solutions, an ability to manage people that is truly impressive, and a personal presence that I greatly admire, including his ability not to display fatigue, for example.

It has been a unique opportunity to learn from him. Unlike my childhood friends, who respected me because I was the owner of the ball, the members of the Board admire the way Master Paulo has occupied the position of President in such an impressive manner. Likewise, I am certain that his colleagues in medicine regard and respect him in the same way as a physician.

There is a bright about him that goes beyond the role itself. I believe it is important for me to learn how to operate at that level of leadership as well. At least, this reflects some of the conversations I have with Si Gung about everything I have been observing in my role as Secretary-General.
