WHY CHOW YUN FAT IS THE COOLEST HONG KONG ACTOR OF ALL TIME?

A reporter once asked at a press conference how Chow Yun Fat would treat someone he loves in real life:

"... There is no way to say it succinctly, I would need a long time if we were going to talk about love. Because there are many ways to talk about love and it cannot be explained so simply.
The love I have for my wife, for example, is completely different from the love you speak. Even saying 'I love you' in Cantonese is different than speaking Mandarin or English.
Since we both speak Cantonese, you would understand the 'love' I speak of. And you will be able to write about it accurately. So leave me your card and then I'll talk to you about 'love' more calmly. But as an actor, it's easy to talk about 'love' according to what is written in the script ... "

Chow Yun Fat starred in a TV soap opera called "The Bund" in 1980 (Available in the NETFLIX Brasil catalog). The series tells the story of a gangster's rise in 1930´s Shang Hai. The soap opera was an incredible success across Asia and quickly made him a big star.
However, later, with a fortune of more than 1 billion HK Dollars, he made the following statement: "... The challenge is not how much money you make in life, but how you maintain a calm mindset and live the rest of your life in a simple way and without many worries" ... - He completes saying- "My dream is to be a happy person".
(With social media, Chow Yun Fat’s simple lifestyle was discovered)

This attitude is not new, Chow Yun Fat in his interviews says that he leads an ordinary life. And recently, he made headlines when he said he is going to donate his entire fortune valued at more than 700 million US Dollars, to charity. He said smiling: "... The money is not mine, I'm just keeping it for now ..."

Chow Yun Fat became known between the '80s and' 90s by fans of Hong Kong gangster films as "The King of Berettas". That's because his great cinematographic partner, the legendary Director and screenwriter John Woo, when giving an interview about one of the duo's greatest hits called "Hard Boiled"(1992), would have said: "Give two berettas in the hands of this man and he becomes God ". - Thus, since his first success under the direction of John Woo in 1986 called "A Better Tomorrow" (1986), the use of two Berettas by the characters of Chow Yun Fat written by John Woo, became his trademark, and influenced the pop culture of the time in Hong Kong.

Regarding the use of weapons in his films, Chow Yun Fat says he hates them as much as he hates blood- "But I'm an actor, and John (John Woo) seems to love guns and the sound of gunshots. So when he screams' Action! ' I need to work". - Explains him laughing.
On another occasion, Chow Yun Fat was asked about the violence present in films like "The Killer" (1989) where he plays a murderer (PHOTO). Chow says: "... The characters I play are not so shallow. You can't say that a killer is a bad or good person. In this world that these characters live in, that's their job. They don't kill out of hate, that´s just Business..."

The partnership between John Woo and Chow Yun Fat is legendary in the Hong Kong film industry. Chow Yun Fat, became famous for his elegance and charm when playing characters from the underworld. According to him, it all started when in "A Better Tomorrow" (1986), he talked with John Woo if he could put a few more layers on his famous character Mark. "See John, I have experience, I have a story to tell. Would you mind changing the scene a little so I could put more of my performance on? He always gave me space to put a lot of me in the roles. Many directors don't allow that, but John Woo allows actors a lot of things to put their ideas into their roles. "- Chow Yun Fat said.
Below, you can check out one of the most anthological scenes of Hong Kong cinema in the 20th century. Observe a series of trademarks by the Director of John Woo, such as the slow-motion shooting, which the western audience would only have contact with when he directed "Mission Impossible 2 "(MI: 2, 2000). All this visual and sound poetry, added to the charm of Chow Yun Fat as the mobster Mark in "A Better Tomorrow". Notice how John Woo uses the soundtrack with interpreters from the '30s (a device used almost twenty years later by Stephen Chow in "Kung Fu Hustle") to create tension in the scene. In addition, we are treated to the first time that Chow Yun Fat kills on the scene using two Berettas. As stated above, something that would become your trademark:

On the explanation of why this partnership with John Woo works so well. Chow Yun Fat comments: "... We talk about everything: From the sets to the costumes. Sometimes, he teaches me things about how to position myself in relation to the camera so that I look better, cooler ... Or so that I can jump off the screen and not be an ordinary actor ... "

In 1998 (PHOTO) alongside Mira Sorvino, Chow Yun Fat stars "Replacement Killers"(1998). A film that received the following criticism from the main critic of Los Angeles at the time: "Pure garbage".
In fact, the film was a poorly made copy of the Hong Kong gangster films that had been so successful for more than ten years since "A Better Tomorrow" in 1986.
Perhaps the producers did not have enough confidence in an Asian directors to hand the production over to John Woo. So they seem to have decided to call Antoine Fuqua.
About Hollywood, Chow Yun Fat says: "I believe that every actor in the world wants to have a chance in Hollywood. But right now I can only fantasize about how to get there. For an Asian actor it is very difficult, and Bruce Lee was a exception. Many people don't know what 'Chow Yun Fat' would be able to do in a film. Many directors and actors know Chinese films, but the general public? I'm not sure. But my goal is still to make a great film with John Woo in Hollywood one day ... "

In the same year that "Mission Impossible 2" (MI: 2, 2000) became the great summer Blockbuster directed by John Woo and starring Tom Cruise. Chow Yun Fat gave life to Li Mu Bai in the long-dreamed work of Ang Lee (PHOTO) based on the genre "Wu Xia" of literature called "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"( 2000).
Chow Yun Fat's presence, elegance and subtle grandeur. He gave a unique credibility to the character who appeared as a great martial arts master.
It was in that same period, from his good relationship with Ang Lee, that Chow Yun Fat developed his passion for photography. It caught Chow's attention, Ang Lee's ability to perceive subtleties in places that later became locations for the film.

One of Chow Yun Fat's most recent works is a film written and directed by renowned filmmaker Wong Jing called "Da Shang Hai" (The Last Tycoon, 2012). In it, Chow Yun Fat plays a gangster who did exist in real life and conveys his old elegance and romantic violence in this character. It's like watching Clint Eastwood in "The Unforgiven"(1992): "I hope the directors continue to put me in action movies. I can still do that. Preferably using two guns at the same time." - He said at one of the press conferences to promote the film.

Maintaining a love relationship using Kung Fu.

Ele teria dito: "... O sofrimento, a impermanência e a insubstancialidade das coisas."

On my 2010 birthday (PHOTO), I felt a mixture of very strong emotions: I heard powerful words from dear people about me. Those words we hardly believe are directed at us. At the same moment, I knew that my relationship of so many years with my partner was falling apart .... But it was only a few months after this photo above that Si Fu would say the following words: "Pereira, we were born alone and will die alone. In the meantime, we meet people willing to form an alliance with us. "- Si Fu said. He went on: "... In the meantime, we have the illusion that people are 'ours', and we do not accept the fact that they can leave. And more than that: They have this right ..."
In the same conversation, Si Fu introduced me for the first time, his understanding of what he called the "three truths of Chinese Buddhism": "... Pereira, do you know what are the 'three truths of Chinese Buddhism'?" - I said no. He would have said, "... the suffering, impermanence and insubstantiality of things."

Years before this conversation, when Si Fu first visited Méier Studio (PHOTO), in the background was dear Thiaguinho Thiers wearing a blue jacket. He was, in fact, my first student of all time. He was seven years old, and I worked hard to do my best.
The day I found out from the dance school secretary guy that Thiago's grandmother called and told him that Thiago had decided to stop practicing, I felt like the most incompetent person in the world ...
I remember sitting on the steps that connected the disabled kitchen to the backyard and staring at the floor for a while. I was trying to understand what I had done wrong. It was up to Si Fu later to make me understand that this kind of thing would be a constant over the next few years ... Still, that was a very strong feeling of "loss" in my career ...

When Si Fu made his second visit to the former Méier School headquarters on Medina Street (PHOTO), I was able to witness for the first time a new interpretation of his for "Siu Nim Tau" ( 念頭). He translated it as "Little desire".
Si Fu does not speak empty things,  two years later, in a Ceremony in which his To Dai Clayton Quintino would access another level. Si Fu told Clayton that he was free to walk away whenever and if he wanted to. Si Fu said that the relationship should withstand possible departures. That talk about Si Fu struck me a lot, since it had been a year since I had manipulated it all the way to keep Clayton practicing. I thought I was helping him by doing this, but I didn't really give him a chance to go when he needed to.
It is not necessary to think, to know that our "excessive desire" impairs our actions by making us manipulative.
(Si Fu me abraça em meu aniversário em 2013)
(Si Fu hugs me in my birthday celebration in 2013)

(risos). - "Já te contei a história da vaquinha?" - Perguntou Si Fu empolgado.

Then, some time later, asked by Si Fu about how was a relationship I was living at the time, I replied that the person was a little jealous. Si Fu told me that he would explain his vision of jealousy to me by telling "the story of the little cow." (laughs). - "Did I tell you the story of the lil' cow?" Asked Si Fu excitedly. I said "no". - "Pereira, imagine that you have a cow. How do you not to lose it?". - I was laughing, but I said I'd use a fence. Si Fu said: "That's what everyone does. Want to know what I would do?" - I said "yes". Si Fu went on: "I wouldn't make fences, I'd let the cow completely loose. If she wanted to leave she could go, but she wouldn't go anyway." - I was silent and Si Fu added: "Because of the quality of my pasture."
(Com Si Fu no final do ano de 2013)
(With Si Fu in the end of the year of 2013)

Si Fu then added, now seriously, with a line I never forgot: "Pereira, what happens if you try to keep water in your pocket?" - I remained silent and he answered: "It will make your pocket all wet". - Then he continued: "If you try to close your hand so as not to let the water out, it escapes between your fingers. "- He paused and said:" Remember! The best way to keep water is to keep your hand open. "
It seemed so obvious to leave the water in the open palm, but within that context I felt myself hearing something unique.

(Com Si Fu, Julia and Jade no Restaurante Passione em 2013)
(With Si Fu, Julia and Jade at Passione Restaurant in 2013)

Si Fu would still tell me in the next few years about people having a false illusion of control. And now thinking about what he said to me in 2011, much of what comes to us comes from the fact that we think things are forever, that they will stay the same and that when we try not to suffer, we end up suffering.
Therefore, having "Little desire" ["Siu Nim Tau" (小 念頭)] is essential.

THE EMPTINESS: OVERCOMING DIFFICULTIES WITH MASTER JULIO CAMACHO

(Laughing with Si Fu after a demo on Muk Yan Jong
at the former residence of Si Suk Ines Braconnot)

The first time I heard Si Fu talk about "take advantage of the emptiness," I was sitting next to him, my  Kung Fu sister Paula Gama and another  Kung Fu sister at the bakery in Rosas Park in Barra in 2007.
This last Kung Fu
sister  went through a professional and life setback, and Si Fu at that time was supporting her to get on track again. That afternoon, he talked about the importance of that moment  in a very optimistic and sincere way. This Kung Fu sis laughed without seeming to believe in the tranquility of Si Fu's speech and looked at Paula as if to say, "I can not believe he's saying this!" - More information: "This moment of emptiness is the more important one, it is in it that we work so that when something begins to happen again we are already in conditions."

In Kung Fu, we believe that you build your ability. So you can start practicing today or anytime. Regardless of age, sex, body structure or any other stereotyping limitation related to Ving Tsun. It turns out that this skill  building also refers to our ability to think our own thinking and consequently to experience a significant change in our vision on our life.
(Si Fu with Si gung at MYVT Barra School during his visit in 2017)

I've heard Si Fu telling me that because he as he lives in Rio de Janeiro, he used to go  to São Paulo once a week to be with Si Gung and to do his practice. Si Fu said that he often went to Mo Gun even though he had warned that he would, and did not find Si Gung. To make matters worse, someone reported that he had gone to do something seemingly trivial: "Si Fu went to the movies." - Si Fu says that at first he did not deal very well with this, since he ended up coordinating and helping practices of the younger members, his own practice was always in the background or not even happening. "Perhaps Si Gung has noticed my difficulty in dealing with that emptiness," he would have said to me years later. Si Fu reflecting on that period some time later, realized that Si Gung was giving him the same experience of someone who lived next to the Mo Gun in Sao Paulo, not artificializing his process for being from Rio. Something that the Si Taai Gung Moy Yat himself  did it for him in the USA
(With my grandfather after my access to Cham Kiu in July,2000)

Although I really like my grandfather, his reference to me is that of the handyman. That operational person who could solve everything by himself with his own hands . Already my father, seems always to be in activity, for him that also works very operationally, to be working is to be doing something objectively.
Si Fu seems to have repaired these influences on me over the years, so with much patience he has been doing a job with me to help me leave more empty spaces for other people to occupy. He tries very perseveringly, to show me that the a leader is not necessarily operational. "Life can be simple Pereira" he said once.

(Com Si Fu na magnífica Paris em Maio de 2017)
(With Si Fu in the wonderful Paris in May, 2017)

Aquilo me chamou a atenção.

Contrary to what may seem, Si Fu does not sit with me and gives me a class on Chinese logic. My learning with him occurs much more by inspiration from my interpretations of his actions. For example: I once had breakfast together in some cafe, I learned that he was facing a difficult situation and had two days to solve it. I tensed as I listened, and he seemed to be engrossed in resolution with the help of a Kung Fu brother of mine. It turns out that later, he was in the Mo Gun with other people, telling funny stories and laughing. That caught my eye. I asked myself, how much my day would be lost if I were in his place. And more: He, in a matter of minutes, seemed to enjoy the moment as if nothing was happening.

Ele pegou a fruta e comeu.”

"A monk was once walking on the edge of a cliff ..."- Si Fu told me once:  "Then he saw that a tiger was chasing him. When he tried to escape, he slipped and fell, and there he was able to catch himself on a very fine branch. But if he climbed back, the tiger would kill him, and if he stayed there, the branch would break and he would die. Then he realized there was a fruit at the end of the branch. He took the fruit and ate it. "
Si Fu seems to live in real life the Zen paradox of this monk and tiger story. He often says about financial hardships: "If I have too much, little or no money, you will not notice a difference in me because of that. I do not get excited or sad about it. "

On the other hand, sometimes emptiness occurs unexpectedly, because we do not perceive it happening still in the immanent plane. We may be accustomed to a routine of life, and suddenly it seems to be torn from us. Then we see ourselves in a great emptiness, not knowing what to do.
So when we come across this kind of "emptiness," we have an immediate tendency to try to fill it at any cost without respecting the time of things to reconfigure and without letting this new cycle tell us the action to be taken.

“ – Complementou.

That is why Si Fu spoke to me many years ago: "Thiago, as much as someone likes you, if you have a fever, that person will even take care of you, take your temperature, give you the medication, but she will not be able to get the fever for her and get it from you. See: I can rub my arm in yours, but the fever will not leave you for me. You will have to deal with it alone, just like most things in life. "As I got emotional, Si Fu stopped and seemed to wait for a few moments. Then he went on: "So I see a lot more as a matter of alliances. You meet people throughout your life with whom you are making alliances. Some last longer, some less. Some alliances can last a lifetime. But one thing does not change: You are born alone and you die alone. "- After another pause, Si Fu who has no religious bias, quoted Chinese Buddhism:" Do you know Chinese Buddhism? What are the three premises? "- He asked -" The impermanence of things is one of them. "- He said.

Em 2015, me vi numa situação inédita e dificílima.

In 2015, I found myself in an unprecedented and difficult situation. And even though it took me down, it was in that year that projects like "Culture Kung Fu" appeared and that I was titled as Qualified Master. And I had this idea of working on the emptiness. But I found myself struggling to enjoy this impermanence of things, and so I looked exhausted. Today, even in one of the most difficult times of my life, I've never been so confident. I see myself enjoying the small details, the small moments, enjoying things that in the run would be unnoticed. I started to walk more, to sit under a palm tree to make my schedule, when I used to do it on a cold and lifeless table. I started to improve my relationships, and I feel even more radiant. And when you change that key, you also become available for more good things to happen. Not because of magic, but because you get in tune to make it work, not to whine.
And maybe, in that moment, you do not even recognize yourself anymore. And maybe, in that moment, you find out once again that you learned Kung Fu.
