(Nossa entrevistada em um momento de descontração durante a Visita Oficial de Si Gung Leo Imamura em março de 2015. Na ocasião, tivemos a Celebração do 52º Aniversário de Si Gung  e o evento foi organizado em conjunto por todos os Núcleos da Moy Yat Ving Tsun do Rio de Janeiro.)

A vida era mais ou menos assim no Brasil nos final dos anos 80 : Quando chegava Sexta, você pegava o pouco dinheiro que tinha e se dirigia até uma locadora qualquer do seu bairro. Chegando lá, você encontrava a sessão de artes marciais. Muitos filmes com "Kickboxer" no título, mas não importava qual você escolhesse, pois uma coisa era certa: Em algum momento do filme, a personagem principal que poderia ser o Van Damme , Loren Avedon ou similares, encontraria um Mestre e viveriam de forma intensa a prática daquela arte marcial para derrotar o vilão do filme.  Quando o filme acabava, você se pegava imaginando como seria uma vida assim... Viver no local que se pratica uma arte marcial 24 horas por dia e sete dias por semana....

Life was something like this in Brazil in the early 90s: When it was Friday, you would take the money you had and go to any of the video rental stores in your neighborhood. Arriving there, you would find the martial arts session. Lots of movies with "Kickboxer" in the title, but it did not matter which one you chose, because one thing was certain: At some point in the movie, the main character who could be Van Damme, Loren Avedon or similar, would find a Master and live in intensely 24/7 the practice of that martial art to defeat the villain of the film. When the movie ended, you would find yourself imagining what a life like this would be like ... Living at the martial arts school practicing a martial art 24 hours a day, seven days a week ....

Hoje, voltamos com uma das colunas mais queridas da página chamada "Mo Gun All Stars". Nela, fazemos entrevistas com membros da Linhagem Moy Yat no Brasil e no mundo que se destacam de alguma forma. E apesar das inúmeras entrevistas incríveis que fizemos ao longo dos anos, sem dúvidas, a mais emblemática foi a da Mestra Ursula Lima no final da década de 2000. E no ano em que a página celebra 10 anos, nada melhor do que entrevistar um de seus principais discípulos: Helena Carneiro "Moy Gaap Lin" . Ela que realiza sem saber , o sonho de muitos garotos que tantos filmes assistiram nas décadas de 80 e 90: Viver no Mo Gun (Acho que estou falando de mim mesmo ,risos). Porém, espero que possa descobrir desde a primeira parte desta entrevista, que na vida real, é bem diferente....

Today, we return with one of the most beloved columns of the page called "Mo Gun All Stars". In it, we do interviews with members of the Moy Yat Lineage in Brazil and in the world that stand out in some way. And despite the countless incredible interviews we've done over the years, the most emblematic one was that of Master Ursula Lima in the late 2000s. And in the year the page celebrates 10 years on line, there's nothing better than interviewing one of her main disciples: Helena Carneiro "Moy Gaap Lin". She realizes without knowing, the dream of many boys that  watched  so many movies  in the 80's and 90's: Living in the Mo Gun. However, I hope you can find out since the first part of this interview, that in real life, it's quite different ....

Existe uma lenda no Rio de Janeiro, sobre dois irmãos Kung Fu que também são primos fora do "Mo Lam". Mestre Julio Camacho, o irmão Kung Fu mais velho, começara a transmitir o Ving Tsun na Zona Oeste do Rio no terraço da casa da então prima Ursula de 16 anos. Os anos se passaram, e uma das maiores parcerias de artes marciais de todos os tempos aconteceu no Brasil. Enquanto Mestre Julio Camacho trabalhava em termos de inovação, a futura Mestra Ursula Lima trazia um aspecto mais organizacional. De alguma forma, ambos se assimilavam ao seu Si Fu, Grão-Mestre Leo Imamura.
Para muitos que viveram aqueles tempos, nada disso é novidade. Porém, para os que chegam agora, são apenas histórias, histórias de uma época em que juntos Mestre Julio Camacho e Mestra Ursula Lima, marcaram para sempre a administração de um Mo Gun baseado na excelência.

There is a legend in Rio de Janeiro about two Kung Fu brothers who are also cousins out of the "Mo Lam". Master Julio Camacho, older Kung Fu brother , had begun spreading the Ving Tsun in the West Zone of Rio on the rooftop of the house of his cousin Ursula, 16 years old. The years passed, and one of the greatest martial arts partnerships of all time happened in Brazil. While Master Julio Camacho worked in terms of innovation, the future Master Ursula Lima brought a more organizational aspect. Somehow, they both assimilated to their Si Fu, Grand Master Leo Imamura.
For many who have lived those times, none of this is new. But for those who arrive now, those are only stories, stories of a time when together Master Julio Camacho and Master Ursula Lima, have always marked the administration of a Mo Gun based on excellence.

Journey of Ving Tsun Life: Você pode falar um pouco sobre quem é você?

Helena: Me chamo Helena Carneiro Ribeiro, sou praticante e Tutora Qualificada do Núcleo Copacabana da Moy Yat Ving Tsun Martial Intelligence, discípula "Dai Ji" (12ª GVT) de Mestra Ursula Lima - Líder da Família Moy Lin Mah, tendo recebido na ocasião de meu Baai Si o nome Kung Fu "Moy Gaap Lin".

Journey of Ving Tsun Life: Can you talk a little about who you are?

Helena: My name is Helena Carneiro Ribeiro, I am a practitioner and Qualified Tutor of the Copacabana School of Moy Yat Ving Tsun Martial Intelligence, disciple "Dai Ji" (12th GVT) of Master. Ursula Lima - Leader of the Moy Lin Mah Family, having received on the occasion of my Baai Si the name Kung Fu "Moy Gaap Lin".

Journey of Ving Tsun Life:Como é o seu dia a dia fora do Círculo Marcial?

Helena: Atualmente, estou trabalhando como Web Designer em dois projetos e faço também alguns trabalhos como freelancer, quando surge a oportunidade. Além disso, sempre que possível, busco participar de projetos e feiras culturais pela cidade do Rio. Eu costumo dizer que tive muita sorte no meio profissional, pois conheci pessoas magníficas que me ensinaram muito e me ensinam até hoje. Em especial, gostaria de citar Gustavo Pinto, consultor na área de Tecnologia da Informação e meu coordenador; e a prof.a Zuzana Paternostro, Historiadora e Crítica de Arte, minha mentora no mundo das Artes Plásticas. Entre o trabalho e as atividades do Mo Gun, estão a Família e os amigos, que me apoiam e me dão condições de cumprir bem hoje o meu papel.

Journey of Ving Tsun Life: How is your day-to-day life outside the Martial Arts Circles?Helena: I am currently working as a Web Designer on two projects and I also do some freelance work when the opportunity arises. In addition, whenever possible, I try to participate in projects and cultural fairs in the city of Rio. I usually say that I was very lucky in the professional environment, because I met wonderful people who taught me a lot and taught me to this day. In particular, I would like to mention Gustavo Pinto, consultant in the field of Information Technology and my coordinator; and Prof. Zuzana Paternostro, Historian and Critic of Art, my mentor in the world of Plastic Arts. Between the work and the activities of the Mo Gun, are the Family and the friends, who support me and enable me to fulfill my role well today.

Journey of Ving Tsun Life:Você já teve outras experiências com artes marciais ou tinha algum interesse nesse tema antes de se tornar uma discípula de sua Si Fu?Helena: Antes de começar a praticar o Ving Tsun no Núcleo Copacabana da Moy Yat Ving Tsun, eu já havia presenciado algumas competições de Judô, Jiu-Jitsu e Muay Thai, algumas danças de Capoeira, mas nunca me aventurei em nenhuma destas modalidades. Havia interesse, mas eu sempre fui muito medrosa e se não fosse por um amigo me puxando o braço, dificilmente eu sairia de casa, (risos). E foi justamente o que aconteceu. Graças ao incentivo de meu Gaai Siu Yan e amigo, meu Si Hing Rodolpho Alcantara, que comecei a praticar o Ving Tsun com Si Fu Ursula Lima.

Journey of Ving Tsun Life: Have you ever had other experiences with martial arts or had any interest in this subject before becoming a disciple of your Si Fu?Helena: Before I started practicing Ving Tsun at the Moy Yat Ving Tsun Copacabana School, I had already witnessed some Judo, Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai competitions, some Capoeira dances, but I never ventured into any of these modalities. There was interest, but I was always very fearful and if it was not for a friend pulling my arm, I would hardly leave the house (laughs). And that's exactly what happened. Thanks to the encouragement of my Gaai Siu Yan and friend, my Si Hing Rodolpho Alcantara, I started practicing the Ving Tsun with Si Fu Ursula Lima.

 Journey of Ving Tsun Life:Você tinha algum conceito equivocado sobre mulheres praticarem artes marciais? Sua Si Fu foi um exemplo para você neste aspecto?Helena: Quando somos crianças, todos jogam até alguém colocar um brinquedo na sua mão e dizer que este ou aquele brinquedo é de menina, ou é de menino. Hoje em dia, os meios de comunicação tornaram-se mais democráticos e as vozes de diferentes grupos começaram a ganhar espaço. Graças a isso, podemos ver cada vez mais o potencial de cada indivíduo a ser explorado, independente de gênero, raça, religião, localização geográfica etc. Da minha parte, não houve nenhum equívoco (respondendo a pergunta, risos) e acredito que para as gerações futuras, também haverá cada vez menos. Minha Si Fu é um forte exemplo para mim em diversos aspectos, dentro e fora do Círculo Marcial. Tanto como Si Fu (Líder de Família) e Artista Marcial, como um ser humano excepcional. Hoje, nossa Si Fu tem prestígio internacional graças ao seu esforço e dedicação e de todos que a apoiam. Quando ouvimos outros membros da família Kung Fu, como você próprio, Si Hing, ou o Si Sok Felipe Soares, o Si Baak Ricardo Queiroz e principalmente Si Baak Julio Camacho, compartilhando a respeito do que já vivenciaram ao lado de nossa Si Fu, das dificuldades e condições que ela enfrentou para tornar-se a figura que é hoje, isso não só nos inspira, como nos faz valorizar ainda mais a nossa Si Fu.

Journey of Ving Tsun Life: Did you have any misconceptions about women practicing martial arts? Is your Si Fu an example to you in this aspect?Helena: When we are children, everyone plays until someone puts a toy in their hand and says that this or that toy is for girls, or for boys. Nowadays, the media have become more democratic and the voices of different groups have begun to gain space. Thanks to this, we can see more and more the potential of each individual to be explored, regardless of gender, race, religion, geographical location, etc. For my part, there was no misunderstanding (answering the question, laughs) and I believe that for future generations there will also be less and less. My Si Fu is a strong example for me in many ways, inside and outside the Martial Arts Circles. As much as Si Fu (Family Leader) and Martial Artist, as an exceptional human being. Today, my Si Fu has international prestige thanks to her effort and dedication and of all who support her. When we hear other members of the Kung Fu family, such as yourself, Si Hing, or Si Sok Felipe Soares, Si Baak Ricardo Queiroz and especially Si Baak Julio Camacho, sharing about what they have already experienced alongside my Si Fu, the difficulties and conditions that she faced to become the figure she is today, this not only inspires us, but also makes us value our Si Fu even more.

 Journey of Ving Tsun Life:Você pode nos contar algum momento marcante sobre você e sua Si Fu ao longo desses anos?Helena: São muitos (risos)
Ao longo desse tempo, tiveram momentos bons e outros em que eu me encontrava numa situação difícil ... Em todos eles, lá estava Si Fu. Por outro lado, penso que eu muito provavelmente, não estive presente da mesma forma, sempre que Si Fu precisou. É difícil perceber o quanto uma pessoa se dedica por nós e cuida para que estejamos bem, até que a gente também assuma esse papel. Hoje, acredito que eu tenha um pouco mais de maturidade para perceber certas coisas e o Kung Fu me beneficia muito nesse processo. Eu posso falar de uma ocasião que foi muito marcante para mim e que tem relação com esse sentimento ... Era uma quarta-feira, um dia cheio no Mo Gun, e eu tinha acabado de chegar para tutorizar uma aula do Ving Tsun Experience. Nesse dia, Si Fu já estava lá desde cedo e quando eu cheguei, fui direto para a sua sala. Esperava cumprimentar Si Fu e então correr para trocar de camisa, seguindo para as atividades do dia. Mas quando entrei, vi Si Fu na frente do computador com uma expressão séria e os olhos vermelhos, ela pediu que eu entrasse e fechasse a porta. Si Fu compartilhou comigo a respeito de uma notícia que acabara de receber e estava muito preocupada. Nesse momento, apesar da notícia, minha primeira reação foi um choque ao ver Si Fu fragilizada. Eu não sabia o que fazer ou o que dizer. Só pude ouvir o que Si Fu dizia, como uma parede e então, Si Fu levantou e disse que precisávamos cuidar das aulas do Experience. Eu nem lembrava mais da hora ou da aula que haveria. Ao sair da sala, Si Fu mudou de expressão e voltou sua atenção para o que era necessário naquele momento. As atividades no Mo Gun seguiram, conduzidas por Si Fu... O que queria dizer é que, quando penso em Si Fu e no papel que ela exerce na Família Kung Fu, me pergunto como posso contribuir com esse processo, para que nós da Família Moy Lin Mah, possamos estar cada vez mais, cuidando melhor de nossa Si Fu, assim como ela o faz conosco.

Journey of Ving Tsun Life: Can you tell us some remarkable moment about you and your Si Fu over the years?Helena: There are many (laughs)
During all this time, there were good moments and others in which I was in a difficult situation ... In all of them, there was Si Fu. On the other hand, I think I most likely was not present in the same way, whenever Si Fu needed it. It is difficult to see how much a person is dedicated to us and takes care of us to be well, until we also assume that role. Today, I believe I'm a little more mature to notice certain things and Kung Fu greatly benefits me in this process. I can speak of an occasion that was very striking to me and that relates to that feeling ... It was a Wednesday, a full day at Mo Gun, and I had just arrived to tutor a Ving Tsun Experience class. On that day, Si Fu was there early on, and when I arrived, I went straight to her office. I expected to greet Si Fu and then run to change my shirt, moving on to the day's activities. But when I entered, I saw Si Fu in front of the computer with a serious expression and red eyes, she asked me to enter and close the door. Si Fu shared with me about a news she had just received and was very worried. At this moment, despite the news, my first reaction was a shock to see Si Fu weakened. I did not know what to do or what to say. I could only hear what Si Fu said, like a wall and then, Si Fu got up and said we needed to take care of the Ving Tsun Experience classes. I could not even remember the time or the class there would be. As she left the room, Si Fu changed her expression and turned her attention to what was needed at that moment. The activities at the Mo Gun followed, led by Si Fu ... What I meant to say is that when I think of Si Fu and the role she plays in the Kung Fu Family, I wonder how I can contribute to this process so that we Family Moy Lin Mah members, may we be more and more, taking better care of our Si Fu, as she does with us.

 Journey of Ving Tsun Life: O que significou para você fazer o “Baai Si” com sua Si Fu?

Helena: O Baai Si com minha Si Fu foi um processo muito natural. Tiveram muitos esforços reunidos para a sua realização, ainda mais por se tratar da primeira cerimônia de Baai Si da Família Moy Lin Mah, mas ao mesmo tempo, foi relativamente simples. Do meu ponto de vista, acho que podemos comparar a Cerimônia de Hoi Kuen com o momento em que você convida a pessoa que gosta para namorar, é quando você quer ter um compromisso sério com aquela pessoa e se sente a vontade para se abrir de verdade com ela, há uma série de desafios a serem encarados a partir daí, inclusive dentro do convívio que aumenta e que vai se estender também aos familiares de cada um. Já o Baai Si, seria como o casamento, quando ambas as partes desejam firmar aquele compromisso dia após dia, levando em consideração os altos e baixos, as incertezas e os desafios da vida, dispostos a seguir juntos cuidando um do outro e das gerações seguintes. Vejo um pouco por aí, (risos). O Kung Fu me mostrou que relacionar-se com o outro é uma capacidade humana que deve ser desenvolvida e trabalhada constantemente, não é fácil. Mas é fundamental para o nosso ser. Acredito que o Baai Si hoje, dentro da nossa cultura, talvez seja algo um pouco difícil de assimilar. Eu o entendo como um compromisso firmado entre Mestre e Discípulo, um para com o outro, seus familiares e todas as gerações que vieram antes e as que ainda estão por vir. Assim é a minha relação com Si Fu.

 Journey of Ving Tsun Life: What did it mean for you to do the "Baai Si" with your Si Fu?

Helena: Baai Si with my Si Fu was a very natural process. Many efforts were made to bring it about, especially as it was the first Baai Si ceremony of the Moy Lin Mah Family, but at the same time it was relatively simple. From my point of view, I think we can compare the Hoi Kuen Ceremony with the moment you invite the person you like to date, it's when you want to have a serious commitment to that person and feel free to open up for real with it, there are a series of challenges to be faced from there, including within the conviviality that increases and that will extend also to the relatives of each one. Already Baai Si, it would be like marriage, when both parties want to make that commitment day after day, taking into account the ups and downs, the uncertainties and challenges of life, willing to continue together taking care of one another and the following generations . I'll see a little around, (laughs). Kung Fu has shown me that relating to one another is a human capacity that must be constantly developed and worked on, not easy. But it is fundamental to our being. I believe Baai Si today, within our culture, is perhaps a little difficult to assimilate. I understand it as a compromise between Master and Disciple, one towards the other, their families and all the generations that came before and those that are yet to come. So is my relationship with Si Fu.
