New Bruce Lee movie: A Conceptual mistake (Novo filme de Bruce Lee: um erro conceitual)

by Thiago Pereira (moyfatlei.myvt@gmail.com)

O filme traz o empático e carismático Philip Ng (Ng Wan Lung 伍允龍) no papel de Bruce Lee.

I've heard that: "A  man lives a life but a name lives forever" .- This no doubt is a very inspiring phrase, and one of the names that almost 50 years is not forgotten is the Bruce Lee's name.
The number of productions honoring the "Little Dragon" are such that it is difficult to enumerate them. And in 2016, again "Bruce Lee will be resurrected" in "The Birth of The Dragon" (2016) untitled in Portuguese.
The film stars the empathic and charismatic Philip Ng (Ng Wan Lung 伍允龍) in the role of Bruce Lee.
(Chan Wah Shun's father asks Leung Jan to accept him
as a disciple in Wing Chun soup-opera, 2007)

Philip Ng was born in Hong Kong, but spent most of his life in Chicago. After contact with other Chinese arts like Hung Ga and Choy Lee Fut, became a disciple of the legendary Wong Shung Leung, Si Hing of my Si Taai Gung Moy Yat.
Philip managed to establish himself as a big name in Hong Kong cinema, including becoming a choreographer and reporter of the fabulous Hong Kong show "Kung Fu Quest". In which Philip and other martial artists from Hong Kong traveled to local wilds of mainland China to meet traditional systems of martial arts and Si Fu. He stood out for his respect to the respondents, something that his friends did not always did, and for his kindness.
Philip always contributes to the spread of Ving Tsun, either by his character or by striking roles as Chan Wah Shun, from "Wing Chun" 2007, when, plays along with the living legend Yuen Biao who starred that production in the role of Leung Jaan.

When the trailer for the new film about Bruce Lee starring Philip Ng came out, I must say that I was afraid while watching. This is because the number of bad productions involving this icon is such that we always have a back foot when a new production is launched.
The film apparently, will tell the Bruce story on the way to becoming an icon, and focuses on the famous fight with Wong Jack Man in San Francisco.

The trailer features Wong Jack Man as a Shaolin monk and Bruce Lee as someone objective and focused on practical results. The film will show the Chinese Martial Circle resistance with the fact that Bruce be teaching Western.

Billy Magnussen is perhaps the major problem of this movie at first. He plays a fictional character named Steve McKee, perhaps a reference to Steve Mcqueen, famous film actor and private student of Bruce Lee.
The issue here is not just what he does in the film, but the fact that for the film to be relevant in the West, have to have a Caucasian somehow in production. So it was with "The Forbidden Kingdom (2008), which starred Jackie Chan, Jet Li and a  random Caucasian guy. Is that even almost 50 years after his death, Bruce Lee icon would not be enough to sell this movie on west ? Would not it be smarter to use his wife, Linda Lee ,as Caucasian counterpart in the film?

We are obviously talking about business here. And if to sell a film it is necessary it will be done for sure. However, if at any time the idea was to honor the memory of Bruce Lee, who fought against racism in Western cinema. Conceptually the film already begins wrong.

Philip Ng is an actor I respect a lot since I first watch him in the "WING CHUN 2007" soap-opera in which he plays the young Master of Ip Man, Cham Wah Sun (Jaau Chin Wa). But were were his participation in journalistic series "KUNG FU QUEST 'that made me admire him as a martial artist.

Hong Kong-born Philip Ng has been cast as a young Bruce Lee in George Nolfi’s martial arts action movie “Birth of the Dragon,” while Mainland Chinese actor Yu Xia will play Shaolin Master Wong Jack Man, it was announced Monday.
Groundswell Productions is producing the movie, which starts production on Tuesday in Vancouver, British Columbia.
“Birth of the Dragon” recreates the mid-1960’s fight between Lee and Wong from the point of view of a young martial arts student, Steve McKee (Billy Magnussen, “Into the Woods”) whose allegiance became torn between the duo. To this day, people still argue about who won the famous fight, but one thing is certain — after his battle with Wong, Bruce Lee reinvented himself and his style of kung fu.

“‘Birth of the Dragon’ is a rare opportunity to make an action film with rich characters based on real events and real people. It’s a story about people from the East and West transcending their differences to work together, which is obviously a very timely story,” added Nolfi.
