Moy Yat Institute and USP : The Art of Creating What Does Not Yet Exist (無中生有 )

Você podia me ver ali, em 1989, em uma mesinha de madeira que o meu avô havia feito para mim. A minha avó costumava preparar um chá-mate acompanhado de biscoitos de água e sal com manteiga. Às vezes eu comia assistindo a "Thundarr, o Bárbaro". Outras vezes, vendo "Spectreman". Mas, naquele momento, eu tinha uma brincadeira favorita: massa de modelar. Sabe, acho que foi um brinquedo muito inteligente que me deram, porque, como eu não podia ter todos aqueles brinquedos que apareciam na televisão, com a massinha eu podia, usando a imaginação, criar tudo o que quisesse. Na minha mente, ficava idêntico! E acho que é um pouco assim que tenho me sentido com o Instituto Moy Yat em São Paulo.

Recebi a honra de ser nomeado Secretário-Geral deste centro de excelência dedicado à preservação do legado de um mestre que, em vida, personificou a arte marcial da qual era herdeiro. Isso é muita coisa! Porém, o mais legal é entender que o Instituto é um projeto tão à frente do seu tempo naquilo que se propõe a realizar que as possibilidades agora parecem infinitas.

Então eu me imagino novamente com aquela massinha nas mãos, podendo criar o que quiser. E foi com esse espírito que conversei com o querido Gabriel Guarino, um dos curadores deste evento, que gentilmente convidou o Instituto a se fazer presente para prestigiar a ocasião. Vi ali uma oportunidade muito especial de criar novos vínculos e fortalecer os antigos em um ambiente acadêmico tão consagrado quanto o da USP.

Temos tanto a compartilhar que compreendi aquele convite como mais uma oportunidade de criar possibilidades para o Instituto Moy Yat onde, à primeira vista, elas pareciam não existir. E assim, eu e o meu aluno Nathan de Assis (foto acima) nos fizemos presentes neste evento tão especial, em um fim de tarde tão agradável quanto os de 1989...

You could have seen me there in 1989, sitting at a small wooden table that my grandfather had made for me. My grandmother would often prepare a cup of mate tea accompanied by water biscuits spread with butter. Sometimes I would sit there watching Thundarr the Barbarian. At other times, Spectreman. But at that particular stage of my life, I had a favourite pastime: modelling clay.

You know, I think it was a remarkably intelligent toy to give a child. Since I could not have all those toys that appeared on television, the modelling clay allowed me to create anything I wanted through the power of imagination. In my mind, it looked exactly as I had envisioned it. And I believe that is somewhat how I have been feeling about the Moy Yat Institute in São Paulo.

I was honoured to be appointed Secretary-General of this centre of excellence dedicated to preserving the legacy of a master who, during his lifetime, embodied the martial art of which he was the heir. That is no small responsibility. Yet what is even more exciting is understanding that the Institute is such a forward-thinking project in what it seeks to accomplish that the possibilities now seem virtually limitless.

So I find myself once again imagining that modelling clay in my hands, able to create whatever I can envision. It was with that spirit that I spoke with  Gabriel Guarino, one of the curators of this event, who kindly invited the Institute to be present and lend its support to the occasion. I saw in that invitation a very special opportunity to create new connections and strengthen existing ones within an academic environment as distinguished as the University of Sao Paulo.

We have so much to share that I understood the invitation as yet another opportunity to create possibilities for the Moy Yat Institute where, at first glance, none appeared to exist. And so, my student Nathan de Assis (pictured above) and I attended this very special event on an afternoon every bit as pleasant as those I remember from 1989...

O local foi precisamente escolhido, a energia de todos estava formidável, eu nunca havia ido a USP e essa foi uma primeira impressão incrpivel. 

Era a  “Mostra de Artes Marciais Chinesas da USP: memória e criação entre Brasil e China”, realizada no CDI-USP. Um evento de grande relevância cultural e acadêmica, que integra as celebrações do “Ano da Cultura Brasil-China 2026”.

A comissão organizadora e curatorial , concebida por Cecília Mello, Paula Faro e Gabriel Guarino , promoveu uma impecável condução do evento. Como este evento foi uma coisa tão importante e tão única, é fundamental celebrar o apoio da Universidade de São Paulo (USP), o Centro USP-China e todas as instituições apoiadoras, como a FAPESP e a ECA-USP, por promoverem um ambiente tão rico para a preservação, a memória e o intercâmbio das artes marciais.

Além disso, o evento contou com palestrantes, pesquisadores e participantes que contribuíram para o sucesso desta brilhante iniciativa. Fortalecer os laços entre Brasil e China por meio do ecossistema das artes marciais é avançar em direção ao futuro sem perder de vista as nossas raízes

The venue had been chosen with great care, the energy among everyone present was exceptional, and for me, having never visited the University of Sao Paulo before, it was an extraordinary first impression.

The occasion was the “USP Chinese Martial Arts Exhibition: Memory and Creation between Brazil and China”, held at CDI-USP. It was an event of considerable cultural and academic significance, forming part of the celebrations for the Brazil–China Year of Culture 2026.

The organising and curatorial committee, composed of Cecília Mello, Paula Faro and Gabriel Guarino, conducted the event impeccably. Precisely because it was such an important and unique initiative, I believe it is essential to acknowledge the support of the University of Sao Paulo (USP), the USP-China Centre, and all partner institutions, including FAPESP and ECA-USP, for fostering such a rich environment for the preservation of memory, the production of knowledge, and exchange within the world of martial arts.

In addition, the event brought together speakers, researchers and participants whose contributions were instrumental to the success of this remarkable initiative. Strengthening the ties between Brazil and China through the martial arts ecosystem is a way of moving confidently towards the future without losing sight of our roots.

Os compartilhamentos promovidos pelos Mestres presentes foram algo verdadeiramente tocante. Cada um deles foi à frente para fazer a sua contribuição, contando com a ajuda dos seus alunos e discípulos, de maneira que pudéssemos compreender um pouco melhor não apenas os seus estudos a respeito das origens e da forma como esses sistemas se apresentam nos dias de hoje, mas também através de demonstrações realizadas com grande acurácia em cada gesto.

Algumas perguntas vindas da plateia foram particularmente marcantes. Questões como: que tipo de transformações esses sistemas de Kung Fu sofreram ao longo do tempo? Ou ainda: o que os palestrantes entendiam por tradução?

Tratavam-se de questionamentos fundamentais para uma compreensão das artes marciais que ultrapassa a visão redutora frequentemente difundida pelo cinema, permitindo uma representação mais rica e sofisticada dessas tradições, como aponta a sinóloga Anne Cheng.

The presentations shared by the Masters in attendance were genuinely moving. Each of them stepped forward to make their contribution, often with the assistance of their students and disciples, allowing us to gain a deeper understanding not only of their research into the origins of these systems and the ways in which they are expressed today, but also through demonstrations performed with remarkable precision in every movement.

Some of the questions raised by members of the audience were particularly memorable. Questions such as: what kinds of transformations have these Kung Fu systems undergone over time? Or indeed: what did the speakers themselves understand by the concept of translation?

These were fundamental questions for anyone seeking an understanding of the martial arts that goes beyond the reductive image so often perpetuated by cinema, opening the door to a richer and more sophisticated appreciation of these traditions, as the sinologist Anne Cheng has observed.

Durante o evento, porém, algo me chamou particularmente a atenção: a conduta suave com que o educador, antropólogo e artista marcial Gabriel Guarino conduziu toda a programação (foto acima). Eu esperava que o meu aluno Nathan também pudesse perceber essa sutileza, mas, ainda que não fosse o caso, teríamos a oportunidade de conversar sobre isso depois do evento.

Como em qualquer iniciativa dessa natureza, alguns pequenos imprevistos aconteceram. No entanto, em momento algum era possível perceber em Gabriel qualquer sinal de desequilíbrio ou ansiedade em relação ao cumprimento dos horários da programação ou a eventuais questões técnicas. Quando me recebeu, percebendo que o evento ainda levaria algum tempo para começar, não se desculpou nem chamou atenção para a espera. Em vez disso, escolheu dizer algo como: "Vamos começar já já, mas, se quiser pegar um café, ainda dá tempo. Tem uma cafeteria ali atrás...". Incrível. E eu ainda consegui tomar o meu tão amado café! Risos.

Em outro momento, quando o evento mudaria de espaço, ele comentou o quanto estava feliz com a nossa presença e, após apertar a minha mão, sugeriu que nos dirigíssemos ao segundo andar, onde haveria um coffee break e, posteriormente, uma mesa-redonda.

Para mim, isso revela que houve um excelente trabalho de pré-evento, o que permitiu que Gabriel, realizando ajustes sempre na medida certa, pudesse expressar um nível de sutileza realmente impressionante. Muitas vezes pensamos apenas no evento em si e desconsideramos que todo evento possui um antes, um durante e um depois. Compreender essa tríade é o que nos permite agir através de uma conduta suave, realizando ajustes cirúrgicos sem comprometer a experiência daqueles que participam.

During the event, however, something particularly caught my attention: the gentle manner in which the educator, anthropologist and martial artist Gabriel Guarino conducted the entire programme (pictured above). I hoped that my student Nathan would also be able to perceive this subtlety, but even if he did not, we would have the opportunity to discuss it afterwards.

As with any event of this nature, a few minor unforeseen issues arose. Yet at no point could one detect in Gabriel any sign of imbalance or anxiety regarding the schedule or any technical matters that required attention. When he welcomed me, noticing that the event would still take some time to begin, he did not apologise or draw attention to the delay. Instead, he chose to say something along the lines of: "We'll be starting very shortly, but if you'd like to grab a coffee, there's still time. There's a café just behind us..." Remarkable. And I still managed to enjoy my much-loved coffee! Laughs.

On another occasion, when the event was about to move to a different location, he commented on how pleased he was to have us there and, after shaking my hand, suggested that we make our way to the second floor, where a coffee break would be served, followed by a round-table discussion.

To me, this suggests that there had been excellent preparation before the event itself, which allowed Gabriel, through adjustments that were always measured and appropriate, to express such an impressive degree of subtlety. Too often we focus solely on the event itself and overlook the fact that every event has a before, a during and an after. Understanding this triad is what enables us to act with a gentle conduct, making precise adjustments without compromising the experience of those taking part.

No final do dia, após um coffee break que proporcionou um valioso momento de conexão entre audiência, convidados e palestrantes, houve uma mesa-redonda mediada pela pesquisadora em Filosofia Chinesa e Práticas Corporais, pós-doutora em Tecnologia e Sociedade e também artista marcial, Nabylla Fiori. Cada um dos presentes pôde compartilhar a sua perspetiva, apoiando-se inclusive nas perguntas formuladas pela audiência, sobre os desafios que as artes marciais enfrentam na atualidade e sobre as adaptações realizadas nas suas organizações e instituições para melhor atender os alunos, sem deixar de lado a preservação do legado que cada um recebeu.

De minha parte, fiquei realmente muito feliz por poder participar de um evento tão importante quanto este. Foi uma alegria reencontrar pessoas queridas, conhecer outras, prestigiar esse compartilhamento de conhecimento ao lado do meu aluno, e apreciar, a todo momento, a hospitalidade e o acolhimento diferenciados oferecidos pelos organizadores.

Saí com a certeza de que um evento como esse só é possível graças à nossa capacidade de visualizá-lo pronto antes mesmo de acontecer. E isso não tem nada de mágico. Como diz o Grão-Mestre Leo Imamura: "Não existe mágica na dimensão Kung Fu". O que acredito é que um compromisso sincero com a nossa vocação, aliado a uma visão clara, é capaz de produzir coisas extraordinárias. E este evento é uma prova disso.

At the end of the day, following a coffee break that provided a valuable opportunity for connection between audience members, guests and speakers, a round-table discussion was held and moderated by Nabylla Fiori, a researcher in Chinese Philosophy and Body Practices, a postdoctoral scholar in Technology and Society, and a martial artist in her own right. Each participant had the opportunity to share their perspective, often drawing upon questions raised by the audience, regarding the challenges faced by the martial arts today and the adaptations made within their organisations and institutions to better serve their students while remaining faithful to the preservation of the legacy entrusted to them.

For my part, I was genuinely delighted to have taken part in such an important event. It was a pleasure to reconnect with dear friends, meet new people, witness this exchange of knowledge alongside my student, and enjoy the remarkable hospitality and warmth consistently demonstrated by the organisers throughout the day.

I left with the conviction that an event such as this is only possible because of our ability to envision it as a reality long before it comes into being. And there is nothing magical about that. As Grandmaster Leo Imamura often says: "There is no magic in the Kung Fu dimension." What I believe is that a sincere commitment to one's vocation, combined with a clear vision, is capable of producing extraordinary results. This event stands as proof of that.

On behalf of the Moy Yat Institute, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the opportunity.

Existe uma diferença fundamental entre quem espera ter todos os recursos antes de começar e quem aprende a criar com aquilo que tem. A massinha de modelar não era um substituto inferior dos brinquedos que apareciam na televisão. Era algo melhor: um instrumento de possibilidade pura.

O Instituto Moy Yat (foto onde apareço acima) opera com essa mesma lógica. Não esperamos que todas as condições estejam perfeitas para avançar. Aprendemos a perceber o potencial existente em cada situação e a criar, com precisão e imaginação, aquilo que ainda não tem forma.

Isso não é improvisação. É exatamente o que o Sistema Ving Tsun também promove: a capacidade de agir com a medida certa, no momento certo, utilizando os recursos disponíveis. E, a partir disso, produzir algo que ninguém imaginava ser possível.

There is a fundamental difference between those who wait until they have every resource before they begin and those who learn to create with what they already have. Modelling clay was not an inferior substitute for the toys that appeared on television. It was something better: an instrument of pure possibility.

The Moy Yat Institute (pictured above, where I appear) operates according to that same logic. We do not wait for conditions to become perfect before moving forward. We learn to recognise the potential that exists within each situation and to create, with precision and imagination, that which has not yet taken form.

This is not improvisation. It is precisely what the Ving Tsun System also cultivates: the ability to act with the right measure, at the right moment, making use of the resources available. And from that, to produce something that no one imagined would be possible.
