THEY LAUGHED AT TARANTINO´S BRUCE LEE IN RIO DE JANEIRO CINEMA

There is a city in the state of Rio de Janeiro called "Niterói" (pronounced "Nyh-Teh-Roy"). I was sitting in one of my favorite theaters of this city watching Quentin Tarantino's "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood." Suddenly comes the much talked about scene where Brad Pitt's character confronts Bruce Lee. And seeing a Bruce Lee impersonation on screen by Mike Moh, I couldn't resist and a smile appeared on my face. And I think Bruce Lee has this weird power: Whether himself or an actor playing him, there's an uncontrollable charisma coming from his figure. But I could understand when Brad Pitt's "Overpower" character busted Bruce. In fact, as Tarantino himself said, it would be as if Bruce was fighting Batman: All fictional. What I could not understand were the caricatures made by actor Mike Moh and that made the audience laugh out loud at the movies. And suddenly there was one of my heroes being portrayed on the movie screen, while the audience laughed like there was no tomorrow.

One of the most striking scenes from the 1993 movie "Dragon, The Bruce Lee Story" is when Bruce goes with Linda Cadwell to the cinema to watch the movie "Breakfast at Tifanny's" (1961) in which Mickey Rooney plays the landlord "Mr Yunioshi " .A caricatured and humiliating representation of an Asian male. The whole cinema starts laughing, even Linda, who doesn't understand how much it was hurting Bruce.
And sitting in that movie theater watching "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" hearing the laughter, that was the first thing that came to mind. Ironic, isn't it?

NBA legend Kareen Abdul-Jabaar excellently defines in his interview for the Hollywood Reporter, the damage caused by Quentin Tarantino: "...And, even though we know the movie is fiction, those scenes will live on in our shared cultural conscience as impressions of those real people, thereby corrupting our memory of them built on their real-life actions.
That’s why filmmakers have a responsibility when playing with people’s perceptions of admired historic people to maintain a basic truth about the content of their character. Quentin Tarantino’s portrayal of Bruce Lee in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood does not live up to this standard..." My problem with this scene was, in fact, that Tarantino had the opposite effect of what Bruce Lee has fought so hard since the '60s: That the Western audience should respecte Asian characters and no longer caricatured them.
You can't understand that scene as a tribute to this movie legend, you can't understand the character pitifully played by Mike Moh as merely fictional. Bruce Lee, unlike any American star of all ages, sells to new generations to this day.
Bruce Lee went far beyond cinema, motivating through his films and magazines with stories about him, people around the globe to practice martial arts.

Mike Moh managed, under the direction of Quentin Tarantino and his humiliating characterization of a legend, to change the eyes of future generations. The image of the first man to fight bravely so that actors like Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Donnie Yen, Zhang Zi Yi, and even actors like Mike Moh himself could have their place in Hollywood.
The question remains: The dollars received to play in this scene pay for the fact that an icon of Hong Kong cinema, martial arts and pop culture would appear on the screen of a cinema in Rio de Janeiro, under hysterical laughter from the audience of the theater?

Caminhando com Si Fu pelo estacionamento do Barra Shopping, compartilhava com ele algumas dúvidas à respeito de convidar pessoas para realizar a Cerimônia de Discipulado "Baai Si". Ao longos das décadas, o vi realizando esse convite às mais diversas pessoas, e nem sempre pude compreender o que estava por detrás de um determinado convite. Já em outra oportunidade, levando ele de carro para algum local do qual não me recordo, refiz uma pergunta que a cada seis meses eu fazia: "O senhor já se arrependeu de algum convite?" - Diferente de todas as outras vezes, nesta em particular, sem entrar em muitos detalhes ele respondeu. 
Quando conversa comigo, Si Fu percebe como que a cada semana por vias mais elaboradas(outras vezes nem tanto), eu tento fazer com que ele me entregue um "Modelo" das coisas. Percebendo isso antes mesmo que eu comece a falar, ele sempre devolve uma reflexão para mim a respeito do tema que eu mesmo levei. É como se eu chegasse com uma dúvida, e voltasse com uma questão para refletir, só que bem mais elaborada e desenvolvida do que quando cheguei. 


Walking with Si Fu through the Barra Shopping Mall parking lot, I shared with him some doubts about inviting people for the "Baai Si" (Discipleship Ceremony). Over the decades, I saw him making this invitation to the most diverse people, and I could not always understand what was behind a particular invitation. On another occasion, taking him by car somewhere I don't remember, I asked a question that I asked every six months, "Have you ever regretted an invitation?" When he talks to me, Si Fu realizes that every week in more elaborate ways (sometimes not so much), I try to get him to give me a "Model" of things. Realizing this even before I even begin to speak, he always returns a reflection to me about the subject I have brought myself. It is as if I come in with a doubt, and come back with a question to reflect on, but much more elaborate and developed than when I arrived.

Foi então que após amadurecer mais a ideia, resolvi formalizar o convite para Baai Si de três novas pessoas. A primeira delas, foi a Veronica Paiva(Foto), que é uma To Dai muito querida que foi admitida na Família Kung Fu a bem pouco tempo, mas com um jeito muito especial, se tornou uma pessoa muito próxima ao longo desse ano. Veronica tem o sonho das artes marciais, assim como eu, desde muito jovem sendo também uma cinéfila. Porém, foi só nesse momento de sua vida, que iniciou formalmente sua prática do Sistema Ving Tsun. Para mim, foi o momento certo! Como eu sei? Porque estamos fazendo com que seja o "momento certo"!

It was then that after further maturing the idea, I decided to formalize the invitation to Baai Si for three new people. The first of these was Veronica Paiva (Photo), who is a very dear To Dai who was admitted to the Kung Fu Family very recently, but in a very special way, became a very close and very dear person throughout that time. Veronica has a dream of martial arts, just like me, from a young age also being a movie buff. However, it was only at this point in her life that she formally began her practice of the Ving Tsun System. For me, it was the right time! How I know? Because we are making it the "right time"!

Hoje o "Processo Discipular" no Clã Moy Jo Lei Ou, conta com cinco etapas distintas. Graças à essa visão amadurecida de Si Fu, particionando esse momento em cinco diferentes etapas, possibilitou não só que algo tão especial fosse prolongado, permitindo com que o candidato pudesse realizar melhor a experiência ao longo desse processo, como também graças à outros ajustes como a tomada de consciência à respeito dos diferentes graus relacionais que um praticante experimenta desde que pisa num Núcleo a primeira vez. Ficou mais fácil para um Si Fu em início de jornada como eu, visualizar esses momentos de transição entre um grau e outro.

Today the "Discipleship Process" in the Moy Jo Lei Ou Clan has five distinct stages. Thanks to this mature view of Si Fu, partitioning this moment into five different stages not only made it possible for something so special to be extended, allowing the candidate to be able to perform the experiment better throughout this process, but also through other adjustments such as awareness about the different relational degrees a practitioner experiences since stepping into a MYVT School for the first time. It has become easier for an early-stage Si Fu like me to visualize these transitional moments from one relational degree to another.

Quando Wellington Souza(Foto usando óculos) foi convidado dois dias depois, estávamos no mesmo restaurante. Esse é o nosso local preferido para jantarmos ao longo da semana, e fica na mesma rua do Mo Gun. O gerente e os garçons já nos conhecem e nos sentimos em casa.
Você pode me ver com a camisa do Fluminense, mas eu sou flamenguista. Acontece que havia ganhado essa camisa de presente da Veronica e resolvi usar durante o convite de Wellington que também é seu marido. Meu Si Fu que é torcedor deste time disse: "...Legal! Fez bem! Mostra que a relação está acima de seus interesses pessoais...".

When Wellington Souza (Photo wearing glasses) was invited two days later, we were in the same restaurant. This is our favorite place to dine throughout the week, and is just down the street from Mo Gun. The manager and the waiters already know us and we feel at home.
You can see me with the Fluminense soccer team jersey, but I'm Flamengo(red and black). It turns out that I had won this gift Jersey from Veronica and decided to wear during the invitation of Wellington who is also her husband. My Si Fu who is a fan of this soccer team said: "... Cool! You did well! It shows that the relationship is above your personal interests like your soccer team ...".

Enquanto refletia à respeito de realizar esse convite e conversava com Si Fu para saber suas impressões. Também me lembrei das vezes que Si Fu falava que havia convidado alguém, fosse para ser admitido na Família, fosse para realizar o "Baai Si", para legitimar uma relação que já existia.

Wellington, who appears in the background in black, was formally invited two days after Veronica. While pondering about making this invitation and talking to Si Fu to know his impressions. Muitos anos atrás, perguntei ao Si Gung em alguma carona que dei pra ele, sobre o que achava sobre um Si Fu ter duas profissões. Teria dito ele, que não importava, contanto que esse Si Fu tivesse tempo para seus To Dai. Disse ele: "Sou profissional a mais de vinte anos, mas se um discípulo por alguma razão excepcional só tiver as  23h de uma Sexta, eu estarei lá."  - Àquela fala me impactou na época, e acredito que com seu exemplo e o exemplo de meu Si Fu de pessoas que se entregam 110% à relação, existe uma propensão muito especial dos membros do Núcleo Méier se reconhecerem como descendentes da Linhagem Moy Yat.

Many years ago, I asked Si Gung on a ride I gave him, what he thought about a Si Fu having two professions. He would have told me, it didn't matter, as long as this Si Fu had time for his To Dai. He said, "I have been a professional for over twenty years, but if a disciple for some exceptional reason is only at 11 pm on a Friday, I will be there." - That speech impacted me at the time, and I believe that with his example and the example of my Si Fu of people who give 110% to the relationship, there is a very special propensity for members of the Méier School to recognize themselves as descendants of the Moy Yat Lineage.

Por fim, no último Sábado foi realizado o convite de Thalles Cunha(foto de azul). Thalles conheceu o Ving Tsun através de meu discípulo Keith Markus(foto de preto à esquerda), na época em que serviam juntos no mesmo quartel na Zona Sul do Rio. Thalles participou de um seminário para membros do Corpo de Bombeiros em Novembro de 2017, e dos vinte participantes, foi o único que se matriculou.
Atualmente, prestes a ser pai pela primeira vez, resolveu estabelecer um outro vínculo vitalício: O "Baai Si".

Finally, last Saturday was the invitation of Thalles Cunha (photo in blue). Thalles met Ving Tsun through my disciple Keith Markus (photo in black on the left), while serving together in the same Fire Station  in the South Zone of Rio. Thalles attended a Fire Brigade members seminar in November 2017, and of the twenty participants, it was the only one who enrolled.
Now about to be a father for the first time, he has decided to establish another lifelong bond: "Baai Si".

Si Fu sempre me chamou à atenção, dizendo que meu foco não deveria ser o Núcleo e suas contas a pagar. Dizia ele que o foco sempre deve ser a Família Kung Fu. - "Você ainda mistura muito Núcleo e Família..." - Disse Si Fu em mais de uma oportunidade. E ao me dedicar a separar melhor isso em minha cabeça, posso ver um progresso bem maior. Junto disso, Si Fu me chamou também a atenção sobre outro aspecto enquanto viajávamos de Uber: "Você continua 'lutando pelo prato de comida'. Esse pensamento de escassez vai prejudicar sua Família Kung Fu.". - Àquela fala ficou ressoando em minha cabeça, e foi na "Live" da semana passada do canal "Kung Fu Life" que ouvi Si Gung dizer para a audiência: "Um homem de verdade, faz mais do que pagar contas." 
Então, acho que foi quando decidi "fazer mais do que pagar contas e lutar pelo prato de comida", que a prosperidade nos alcançou.
O Si Fu sempre está certo. 

Si Fu has always caught my attention, saying that my focus should not be on the School matters and its accounts payable. He said the focus should always be on the Kung Fu Family. - "You still mix a lot of School and Family ..." - Said Si Fu on more than one opportunity. And as I dedicate myself to better sort this out in my head, I can see much greater progress. Along with that, Si Fu also caught my eye on another aspect as we traveled from Uber: "You keep 'fighting over the plate of food.' That thought of scarcity will pass down to your Kung Fu Family." - That talk was ringing in my head, and it was last week's "Live" on Kung Fu Life Channel that I heard Si Gung say to the audience, "A real man does more than pay bills."
So I think it was when I decided to "do more than pay bills and fight for the plate of food" that prosperity came to us.
Si Fu is always right.

Brazil´s Father´s Day: A Tribute to Grandmaster Leo

Existe um termo que usamos no mundo marcial chinês para nos dirigirmos àquela pessoa responsável a nos transmitir seus conhecimentos e de nos guiar através de nossa trajetória, sendo a ponte entre nós e a arte da qual é legatário. Este termo é "Si Fu"(師父).
Muitas pessoas traduzem Si Fu(師父) como "Mestre". De fato, pelas limitações de nossos idiomas ocidentais, para contemplar o riquíssimo idioma chinês composto por ideogramas, não há palavra ou expressão que alcance no final das contas, o que o termo "Si Fu"(師父) abrange.
Um dos ideogramas que compõem esse termo, é o de "Pai" (Fu 父). Você então pode observar que este ideograma de "Pai" (父) representa algo como uma pessoa segurando duas armas com as mãos para cima e abertas, como que defendendo alguém ou alguma coisa.

There is a term we use in the Chinese martial circles to address that person responsible for pass down a legacy to us and guiding us through our path, being the bridge between us and the art of which he is the legatory. This term is "Si Fu" (師父).
Many people translate Si Fu (師父) as "Master". In fact, by the limitations of our Western languages, to contemplate the very rich Chinese language composed of ideograms. There is no word or phrase that ultimately reaches what the term "Si Fu" (師父) reaches.
One of the ideograms that make up this term is that of "Father" (Fu 父). You may then notice that this "Father" (父) ideogram represents something like a person holding two arms up and open, as if defending someone or something.

O Brasil é um país da América do Sul que nos últimos trinta anos enfrentou períodos de grande recessão com níveis de inflação altíssimos. Por isso, 1 Real (nossa moeda corrente), vale apenas 25 centavos de Dolár Americano.E por tudo o que vivemos e enfrentamos como um país de terceiro mundo, certos sonhos ou objetivos profisisonais , são simplesmente impensáveis ou não tão bem socialmente aceitos.
E dentro de um cenário quase que completamente desfavorável, meu Si Gung Leo Imamura realizou o feito quase cinematográfico, de manter uma prática e convivência constante com seu mentor, Si Taai Gung Moy Yat nos Estados Unidos, mesmo morando no Brasil em plena década de '80.

Brazil is a South American country that in the last thirty years has faced periods of great recession with extremely high levels of inflation. That is why 1 Real (our currency) is worth only 25 cents of American Dollar. And for all that we live and face as a third world country, certain dreams or professional goals are simply unthinkable or not so well accepted socially.
And in an almost completely unfavorable scenario, my Si Gung Leo Imamura accomplished the almost cinematic feat of maintaining a constant practice and coexistence in Kung fu Life with his mentor Si Taai Gung Moy Yat in the United States, even living in Brazil in the middle of the decade of ' 80

Si gung trouxe para o cenário das artes marciais do Brasil, um profissionalismo nunca antes pensado. Inclusive, a própria possibilidade de se viver apenas de artes marciais dignamente, quando muitos tinham esta atividade apenas como uma fonte de renda extra e descomprometida, fora algo inédito.
Talvez por isso, dentre outras pessoas tocadas pelo seu exemplo naqueles tempos de altas aventuras, estava meu Si Fu Julio Camacho(foto). Não por desejo, ou pela simples vocação, mas por uma responsabilidade e pelo compromisso com o homem que vinha lhe ensinando a defender seus valores pessoais. Ele assume a responsabilidade de abrir o primeiro Núcleo da Moy Yat Ving Tsun na Zona Oeste do Rio em 1995(FOTO).

Si gung brought to the Brazilian martial arts scene a professionalism never before thought. Even the very possibility of living only by martial arts, when many had this activity only as a source of extra money and uncommitted , had been unprecedented.
Perhaps that is why, among other people touched by his example in those times of high adventures, was my Si Fu Julio Camacho (photo above). Not out of desire or simple vocation, but out of responsibility and commitment to the man who had been teaching him to defend his personal values. He assumes responsibility for opening the first Moy Yat Ving Tsun School in the West Zone of Rio in 1995 (PHOTO above).

Anos mais tarde, quando foi necessário que meu Si Fu fizesse um grande ajuste em sua vida para continuar seguindo em frente. Alguns lhe aconselharam a fechar as portas do Mo Gun. Esse Mo Gun na Barra da Tijuca(FOTO) era o desdobramento de tantos outros desde àquele de 1995. Suas palavras foram firmes durante um almoço numa Sexta no Barra World: "Fechar o Mo Gun está fora de cogitação. Eu tenho um compromisso com meu Si Fu.". - Essa fala de Si Fu me marcou profundamente, pois ao ouvi-la, as palavras me remeteram à uma frase do próprio Si Gung: "Meus pais me ensinaram meus valores, mas foi meu Si Fu quem me ensinou a defendê-los." - Pareceu-me que Si Fu também aprendera essa lição naquele momento.

Years later, when my Si Fu had to make a major adjustment in his life to keep moving on. Some advised him to close Mo Gun's doors. This Mo Gun at Barra da Tijuca (PHOTO above) was the deployment of so many others since that one from 1995. His words were firm during a Friday lunch at Barra World Mall: "Closing the Mo Gun is out of the question. I have a commitment to my Si Fu. " - This talk of Si Fu marked me deeply, because when I heard it, the words referred me to a phrase of Si Gung himself: "My parents taught me my values, but it was my Si Fu who taught me to defend them."-  It seemed to me that Si Fu had also learned this lesson at that time.

Mas a relação "Si Fu-To Dai" não se estabelece apenas sobre momentos difíceis de uma das partes. Certa vez, olhava para o casaco da Puma que Si Gung usava. Ele me pegou olhando fixamente e perguntou brincando:" Que foi? Gostou do meu casaco?" - Ele me abraçou e eu disse que sim. Ele complementou: "Sabia que foi seu Si Fu quem me deu? Estávamos em Hong Kong e ele ia comprar um para ele e outro para mim. Não sei se o dinheiro não era suficiente e ele decidiu comprar apenas para mim. Eu disse a ele que não precisava mas ele insistiu. Seu Si Fu é legal não é?" - Sacudi a cabeça positivamente e ele concluiu com outra pergunta: "E você? Já deu algum casaco legal assim pro seu Si Fu?" - Fiquei olhado sem resposta. Ele riu e me deu três tapas fortes nas costas e me abraçou lateralmente me puxando para perto de si e rindo.

But the "Si Fu-To Dai" relationship is not just about difficult times on one side. Once I was looking at the Puma jacket that Si Gung was wearing. He caught me staring and asked jokingly, "What's up? Did you like my jacket?" - He hugged me and I said yes. He added: "Did you know your Si Fu gave it to me? We were in Hong Kong and he was going to buy one for him and one for me. I don't know if the money wasn't enough and he decided to buy just one for me. I told him not needed but he insisted. Your Si Fu is cool isn't he? "-  I shook my head positively and he concluded with another question: "And have you ever given your Si Fu some nice jacket?" - I stared unanswered. He laughed and gave me three hard slaps on my back and hugged me sideways pulling me close and laughing.

O Si Gung que conhecemos hoje é uma pessoa completamente diferente. Quando o conheci, ele estava sempre sério. Apenas o via sorrindo com discípulos de seu círculo mais próximo. Si Fu era um deles. E eu ouvia aqui e acolá as histórias da grande carga de atividades no Núcleo da Julio Verne nos anos '90 e início dos anos 2000. Si Fu estava sempre em todos estes momentos, seguindo o exemplo de Si Gung: "Durante muitos anos Pereira, minha assinatura era a de ser o primeira a chegar a um evento e o último a sair. Queria que o membro do meu Núcleo olhasse e visse em mim um pilar em que ele poderia se apoiar." - Disse-me Si Fu próximo a inauguração do Núcleo Méier.
Com os anos, Si Gung passou a conduzir suas atividades de forma muito mais leve. Sua própria expressão mudou e hoje ele sorri por qualquer motivo. Quando conversei com Si Suk Rodrigo Giarola, Gerente do Instituto Moy Yat recentemente, ele disse que não era bem assim (Risos). De toda forma, pude ver meu próprio Si Fu se sintonizando com este novo momento de seu mentor, culminando em uma das frases que ele mais diz para mim: "Pereira, a vida pode ser leve".

The Si Gung we know today is a completely different person. When I met him, he was always serious. I just saw him smiling with disciples from his nearest circle. Si Fu was one of them. And I listened here and there to the stories of the great load of activities at the Julio Verne Headquartes School in the 1990s and early 2000s. Si Fu was always there at all these times, following Si Gung's example: "For many years Pereira, my signature was to be the first to arrive at an event and the last to leave. I wanted my school members to look at me and see a pillar on which they could lean. " - Si Fu told me near the opening of the MYVT Meier School
Over the years, Si Gung began to conduct his activities much more lightly. His own expression has changed and today he smiles for whatever reason. When I talked to Si Suk Rodrigo Giarola, Manager of the Moy Yat Institute recently, he said it wasn't quite like that (Laughter). Anyway, I could see my own Si Fu tuning in with this new moment of his mentor, culminating in one of the phrases he says most to me: "Pereira, life can be easy."

Por falar em "assinaturas", uma das assinaturas mais reconhecidas de Si Fu em sua trajetória, foi o fato de estar presente durante muito tempo em todas as viagens internacionais de Si Gung acompanhando-o a qualquer país. E até hoje, participa de viagens importantes ou quando sua presença é requerida.
Lembro-me de estar sentado junto a alguns dos membros seniores da Família Moy Yat Sang na sala de Si Gung na antiga Casa dos Discípulos em Junho de 2016.
Estava acontecendo uma reunião com os Mestres de nossa instituição, e meu Si Fu estava presente. Si Gung comentou que precisava que alguém, "melhor até se duas pessoas fossem"(Disse ele), o acompanhasse até o Canadá para um evento que ocorreria lá.
Foram necessários três segundos de silêncio de todos os presentes, até que Si Fu se colocasse: "Eu acompanho o senhor, Si Fu.".  - O silêncio permaneceu e ninguém mais se propôs a ir.
Aquela cena foi muito marcante para mim, pois quanto mais a relação se aprofunda, mais desafiador é o zelo pelo seu Si Fu. E o meu Si Fu, me deu um grande exemplo naquela tarde. Certamente inspirado pelo exemplo de seu próprio Si Fu, meu Si Gung, que nunca mediu esforços para atender à um chamado de Si Taai Gung Moy Yat mesmo morando no Brasil e ele nos EUA.

Speaking of "signatures", one of Si Fu's most recognized signatures in his career, was the fact that he was present for a long time in all of Si Gung's international travels accompanying him. And to this day, he participates in important trips or when his presence is required.
I remember sitting with senior members of the Moy Yat Sang Family in Si Gung's room at the former Disciple House in June 2016.

That scene was very striking to me, because the deeper the relationship is, the more challenging is to zeal for your Si Fu. And my Si Fu gave me a great example that afternoon. A relação se mostra próxima quando o To Dai passar a ter laços não apenas com seu Si Fu como também com membros de sua família consanguínea. A respeito de filhos, Si Gung teria dito à Si Fu certa vez que ele poderia se considerar um bom pai, quando estivesse pronto para o caso de sua filha morrer. Si Fu contou essa história rindo, dizendo que até hoje não estava e que dificilmente um dia estaria. Porém, como um bom discípulo comentou que entendeu o que Si gung quis dizer: Explicou Si Fu que a lógica era exatamente pela relação afetuosa que um pai(ou mãe) tem com um filho, ele impede que os filhos vivam determinadas experiências por medo.- "...Pode ser que nada fosse acontecer com seu filho, mas como você tem medo do pior acontecer, você neutraliza a experiência dele..."

The relationship is close when To Dai becomes bonded not only with his Si Fu but with members of his own family. Então, em Março de 2003, Si Fu foi titulado "Mestre Classe Qualificado" por Si Gung e Si Taai. Muito antes disso acontecer, Si Fu viveu momentos de questionamento durante sua trajetória. Teria dito ele que para seguir praticando uma vez por semana em São Paulo, não só era dispendioso, como também precisava fazer toda uma organização para deixar o Núcleo Jacarepaguá por um dia, e sua filha Jade que era bem pequena. Além disso, precisava ir de ônibus pois o dinheiro era curto. - "Tinham vezes que eu ligava, avisava ao Si Fu que estava indo, perguntava da agenda dele e quando eu chegava lá não tinha ninguém. Alguém aparecia e me dizia: 'O Si Fu foi no cinema'. Eu ficava pensando o que aquilo queria dizer. De repente aparecia alguém do antigo 'Curso Introdutório' e eu ia lá dar a sessão. Eu saia do Rio para praticar e acabava dando sessão de Curso Introdutório."

Comentei no início do artigo, que este ideograma de "Pai" (父) do termo "Si Fu"(師父). Simboliza alguém protegendo algo ou alguém. Porém, se pensarmos com mais afinco, poderemos compreender, que por muitas vezes, um  "Si Fu"(師父) precisará proteger o seu discípulo de sua própria influência . Como quando Si Gung, disse para Si Fu sobre quando ele poderia se considerar um bom pai, independente de sua vontade de proteger sua filha. E eu acredito que Si Fu tomou essa mesma lógica, quando precisa lidar com o afastamento de alguém da Família por mais próximo que seja: "A pessoa precisa se sentir livre para ir, exatamente para que possa retornar num outro momento de forma mais inteira."

Portanto, inscrevo-me abaixo de todas estas histórias que soube de oitiva. Pois de fato, um "Si Fu"(師父) também protege o legado por ele recebido, provê experiências de Vida Kung Fu à seu discípulo para que ele saiba como fazer isso também, para que um dia, ele possa fazer com seu futuro discípulo. Assim como Si Fu faz comigo. Pois, como Si Gung diz: "Kung Fu não pode ser ensinado, apenas aprendido".

So, I subscribe below all these stories I have heard. THE MOST SPECIAL LUNCH WITH SI FU (O almoço mais especial com Si Fu)

Sentei-me com Si Fu no "Benkei da Loirinha"(FOTO) para planejarmos a próxima viagem à Europa no início do semestre passado, e Si Fu parecia animado. Segundo ele, não estava acreditando muito no meu projeto até perceber o quanto tinha estudado desde a última viagem. 
Foi também sentado de frente para Si Fu meses antes, que ele me disse algo como: "Quando uma onda grande te pega e você parece que está numa máquina de lavar, se você começar a nadar desesperadamente, você só vai gastar energia, porque de 360º  de possibilidades,você pode estar nadando na direção errada. Sabe o que se faz numa situação assim? Nada. Você para e espera a onda acabar de bater."

I sat with Si Fu at "Benkei Restaurant" (PHOTO) to plan our next trip to Europe early last semester, and Si Fu seemed excited. According to him, He wasn't really believing in my project until he realized how much I had studied since my last trip.

Ir para a Suiça(FOTO) não estava nos meus planos(risos). Porém, de toda a viagem épica que fizemos no ano de 2019, sem dúvidas, a Suiça para mim ficou como ponto alto dos meus momentos com Si Fu. 
Das brincadeiras dele dizendo que o avião iria cair enquanto ficamos 30 minutos presos numa nuvem com turbulências antes de pousarmos em Zurich, passando pela caminhada que fizemos ao chegarmos pelas ruas sem cor dos subúrbios de Zurich, fingindo que estávamos num episódio de "Black Mirror", até nossa tão especial conversa na volta para o hotel, quando o Si Fu disse que eu era como um vampiro. Foram momentos que me fizeram perceber o quanto tenho sorte de ter conhecido o Si Fu. Meu irmão Kung Fu Gil Batista, não quis ir comigo no dia que fui conhecer o Mo Gun em 1999, ele só apareceu em 2003. Mais tarde, no ano de 2007, ele desistiu de nosso "Baai Si" na última hora. Às vezes, uma simples decisão muda tudo...

Going to Switzerland (PHOTO) was not in my plans (laughs). However, of all the epic trip we made in 2019, without a doubt, Switzerland was for me the highlight of my moments with Si Fu.
From his jokes that the plane would crash while we were stuck for 30 minutes in a turbulent cloud before landing in Zurich, then the walk we took as we reached the colorless streets of the Zurich suburbs, pretending we were in an episode of "Black Mirror" , until our so special conversation back at the hotel, when Si Fu said I was like a vampire. These were moments that made me realize how lucky I was to have known Si Fu. My Kung Fu brother Gil Batista did not want to go with me the day I went to meet Mo Gun in 1999, he only showed up in 2003. Later, in 2007, he gave up on our "Baai Si" at the last minute. Sometimes a simple decision changes everything ...

Foi em Zurich que tive contato com a música "Primavera" de Ludovic Einaud. Sempre que a escuto, me lembro de Zurich e da viagem à Europa. Foi esse mesmo Ludovic Einaud, com sua música "Le Onde", que embalou a nossa demonstração no Teatro Odylo Costa Filho da UERJ em 2007, por sugestão minha. Havia ficado apaixonado por essa música que foi a trilha daquele ano, o ano exatamente do meu "Baai Si". 
Digo isso, porque o almoço nesse dia na Suiça foi um dos mais especiais de minha história com Si Fu. E fica a lição aqui de ouvir sempre o Si Fu. Como Si Gung diz: "Toda a relação e toda a conversa, começam com 'Sau' (obedecer)." - Porque de todas as mesas que nos separavam, fosse durante uma conversa ou durante uma refeição. Nunca me imaginei tão longe com Si Fu, sentado à mesa em Zurich. 
Ouvindo "Primavera" no quarto do hotel em Zurich enquanto Si Fu descansava no final da tarde, me lembrei de quando ouvia "Le Onde" do mesmo músico no ano de meu Baai Si. E de quão longe essa relação chegara e de quão profunda ela ficou desde então. 
Então, se uma onda te pegar, o melhor é não fazer nada, e esperar ela parar de bater.

Listening to "Primavera" in the Zurich hotel room while Si Fu was resting in the late afternoon, I remembered when I heard "Le Onde" from the same musician in my Baai Si year. And how far this relationship had come and how deep it had been. has stayed since.
So if a wave hits you, it's best to do nothing and wait for it to stop beating.

11 YEARS OF "BAAT JAAM DO": WHAT I LEARNED[NO SPOILERS]. (11 anos de Baat Jaam Do: O que aprendi.)

Em Julho de 2008 tive acesso ao último Domínio do Sistema Ving Tsun em uma Cerimônia que ocorreu no bairro da Barra da Tijuca. Naqueles tempos, ouvi de Si Suk Ursula ao sairmos da antiga Unidade Méier: "E aí, Pereira? Preparado para a última Cerimônia?" - Ela se referia ao fato de que aquela seria minha última Cerimônia de acesso.

In July 2008 I had access to the last Domain of the Ving Tsun System in a Ceremony that took place in the Barra da Tijuca neighborhood. In those days, I heard from Si Suk Ursula as we left the old Méier Studio: "So, Pereira? Ready for the last Ceremony?" -She was referring to the fact that this would be my last ceremony.

O INÍCIO:
THE BEGINNING:

Foi nessa sala(FOTO) que tive minha primeira sessão de "Baat Jaam Do". Posso dizer, que um menino adentrava aquele Domínio do Sistema Ving Tsun, sem saber do que se tratava. Anos depois, me tornaria um homem dentro desse Domínio do Sistema Ving Tsun. Mas não foi nada fácil...

It was in this room (PHOTO) that I had my first session of "Baat Jaam Do". I can say that a boy entered that domain of the System without knowing what it was about. Years later, I would become a man within that Ving Tsun System Domain. But it was not easy ...

Meu parceiro de práticas desde o primeiro dia era meu querido irmão Kung Fu Vladimir Anchieta(foto). Junto dele, sempre estava seu filho Daniel Anchieta(foto).
Naquela primeira sessão, Si Fu nos disse que : "...O 'Baat Jaam Do' também é um Domínio importante, porque nele você aprende a cortar...A cortar o que não serve mais..."

My practice partner from day one was my dear  Kung Fu Vladimir Anchieta (photo). Next to him was always his son Daniel Anchieta (photo).
In that first session, Si Fu told us that: "... Baat Jaam Do is also an important Domain, because in it you learn to cut ... To cut what no longer serves you ... " 

Com certa frequência, eu e Vlad éramos convidados por Si Fu para irmos até sua residência que ficava em Jacarepaguá(Zona Oeste do Rio), para praticarmos de forma privativa. Si Suk Diego auxiliava Si Fu conosco, conforme vinha fazendo desde o "Luk Dim Bun Gwaan".

Often, Vlad and I were invited by Si Fu to go to his residence in Jacarepaguá (West Zone of Rio), to practice privately. Si Suk Diego assisted Si Fu with us, as he had been doing since the "Luk Dim Bun Gwaan".

Aquele contato mais próximo com Si Fu(FOTO), me trouxe também a oportunidade de conhecer um pouco mais de sua intimidade e de me aproximar mais de suas filhas. Como no caso da Julinha(foto) que ainda era neném.

Quase um acidente com Mestre Felipe Soares:

Uma das primeiras grandes lições sobre a diferença de se portar uma faca para a prática de mãos livres, tenha sido quando fiz esta prática com o Si Suk Felipe Soares um ano após ter tido acesso à este Domínio.
Apesar de aparecermos na foto, ambos portando um par de facas, havíamos praticado neste dia com o bastão vs a faca e também com uma espada reta de verdade. Acontece que, quando foi a vez de Si Suk Felipe ficar com a espada, resolvi usar minha "estratégia de sempre" que consistia em "partir pra cima com tudo". O que eu não sabia, é da sutileza exigida ao se tocar com a sua arma na arma que a intercepta. Qualquer peso que se deposite em demasia, você cria uma tendência para que a arma do adversário se volte contra você naturalmente se ele souber segui-la. Com isso, lembro claramente da ponta da espada de Si Suk pressionar minha garganta conforme "fui para cima dele".
O clima ficou pesado, e Si Suk com seu característico sorriso perguntou: "Tudo bem?" - Respondi que sim, e talvez tenhamos parado por ali mesmo.


One of the first great lessons about the difference of holding a knife for hands-free practice was when I did this practice with Si Suk Felipe Soares a year after I had access to this Domain.
Although we appeared in the picture, both carrying a pair of knives, we had practiced this day with the Gwaan vs the knife and also with a real straight sword. Turns out, when it was Si Suk Felipe's turn to get the sword, I decided to use my "usual strategy" of "going foward with everything." What I did not know is the subtlety required when touching your weapon to the intercepting weapon. Whatever weight you put on too much, you tend to have your opponent's weapon turn against you naturally if he can follow it. With that, I clearly remember the tip of Si Suk's sword pressing into my throat as I was standing in front of him.
The weather grew heavy, and Si Suk with his characteristic smile asked, "Is everything all right?" "I said yes, and maybe we stopped right there."

NÃO É NA BASE DA "VONTADE".

Três anos haviam se passado(FOTO) e eu ainda não tinha evoluído muito. Não tinha ainda tido acesso à todas as oito partes da sequência e mesmo que tivesse, não teria feito muita coisa com elas. Eu ainda manuseava as facas como dois pequenos porretes e as usava de forma grosseira.
Eu sempre achei que se colocássemos empenho em qualquer coisa, o resultado viria. Bom, isso não acontecia com o "Baat Jaam Do".

Three years had passed (PHOTO) and I had not evolved much yet. I had not yet had access to all eight parts of the sequence and even if I had, I would not have done much with them. I still handled the knives like two little clubs and used them roughly.
I always thought that if we were committed to anything, the result would come. Well, that didn't happen with Baat Jaam Do.

Eu achei então que era uma questão de ficar mais intimo desta ferramenta, mas era apenas mais do mesmo. Nada adiantava e ainda sentia, mesmo três anos depois, dois "trambolhos" em minhas mãos.

I then thought it was a matter of getting intimate to this tool, but it was just more of the same. There was no use, and I still felt, even three years later, two "heavy things" in my hands.

Conforme os anos foram avançando, a frustração começou a crescer: Toda a minha fantasia com relação ao uso de armas caiu por terra. Si Hing Leonardo costumava brincar dizendo que você aprende a usar todas as armas, menos o "Baat Jaam Do" durante sua prática.(Risos)
Ficava cada vez mais claro para mim, e também ao testemunhar as dificuldades do meu fiel parceiro de "Baat Jaam Do" Vladimir(foto), que não adiantava ter apenas vontade, fibra, coragem, etc... Era fundamental usar a cabeça.

As the years progressed, the frustration began to grow: My whole fantasy about weapons use fell apart. Si Hing Leonardo used to joke that you learn to use all weapons except "Baat Jaam Do" during its practice. (Laughter)
It was becoming increasingly clear to me, and also witnessing the difficulties of my faithful partner of "Baat Jaam Do" Vladimir (photo), that would not matter to having only the will, fiber, courage, etc ... It was essential to use our head.

A HORA DA VIRADA:

Nessa busca por respostas, mais uma vez fui convidado por Si Fu para praticar em sua casa(FOTO). Desta vez sozinho, foi uma experiência muito impactante para mim, na qual pudemos compartilhar de momentos que nunca mais esquecerei.

In this search for answers, I was once again invited by Si Fu to practice at his home (PHOTO). This time alone, it was a very impactful experience for me, in which we could share moments that I will never forget.

Sua residência havia mudado, a Julinha havia crescido, mas nossa relação se manteve. Sobre o "Baat Jaam Do", àquela altura, este Domínio já havia me mostrado que eu nunca seria o grande lutador que eu desejei ser um dia. Talvez não fosse tão inteligente quanto pensei, e fosse mais burro do que achava. Uma coisa era certa: Eu buscava agora o mínimo para passar o legado adiante.
Meu foco mudou completamente para um processo de transmissão e não mais para mim apenas.

His residence had changed, Julinha had grown, but our relationship was maintained. Oito anos depois de meu acesso ao Domínio "Baat Jaam Do", meu par de facas encontrava-se sobre a mesa de um Restaurante na Barra da Tijuca(FOTO). Era uma noite de Sábado de Outubro de 2016. Eu agora já era um Si Fu. E como manda a tradição de nossa Familia, usaria as facas agora para cortar o bolo.
Esse par de facas, foi trazido pelo Si Fu da China, e só os consegui, porque Vlad me emprestou o dinheiro na época para comprá-los. Disse ele: "Que isso meu irmão! Você não pode ficar sem! Quando puder você me dá! Sabe-se lá quando teremos outra oportunidade de comprar um!" - Não pude recusar o empréstimo.

Eight years after my access to the "Baat Jaam Do" domain, my pair of knives were on the table of a restaurant in Barra da Tijuca (PHOTO). It was a Saturday night of October 2016. I was already a Si Fu now. And as our Family tradition dictates, I'd use the knives now to cut the cake.
This pair of knives was brought by Si Fu from China, and I only got them, because Vlad lent me the money at the time to buy them. He said, "That's it my brother! You can't be without! When you can give the money back to me! Who knows when we'll have another chance to buy a pair of those!" - I could not refuse the loan.

E bem, se você me perguntasse o que mais mudou em mim nesse período estudando o "Baat Jaam Do", eu diria que foi o meu "olhar". Troquei aquele olhar bobo e perdido por um mais compenetrado. Mas hoje, o pedido de Si Fu, me fez perceber que ainda tenho mais uma coisa a aprender: "Procura relaxar, Thiago... Procura viver...Curtir a experiência. Não se cobra tanto com relação à transmissão..." - Disse ele seguido de uma pergunta para mim: "Você sabe o que você vai almoçar daqui a três anos? Mas você sabe hoje, não sabe? Então...Curte hoje...Curte o momento como praticante, não como Si Fu."

Eleven years after that night of 2008 when I started my practice with Vlad. I was with Si Fu and Si Suk Homero doing a study this morning. And well, if you asked me what changed the most about me during this time studying "Baat Jaam Do", I would say it was my "look". I exchanged that silly, lost look for a more focused look. LEADING THE "MEETING OF THE EIGHT" (Conduzindo o "E8- Encontro dos 8")

A partir de 1998, eu comecei a comprar revistas sobre artes marciais vendidas nas bancas de minha cidade. Naqueles tempos, quando a internet ainda não tinha a força que tem hoje, nossa principal fonte de informação sobre artes marciais ainda eram as revistas especializadas.
No mercado, existiam revistas consagradas no Brasil como a "KIAI" e outras de procedência não tão clara como a "Trump!". Eu nem ligava! Comprava todas e lia imediatamente.
Em 1999, costumava comprar minhas revistas na banca em frente a agência da Caixa Economica em Madureira e ir para o terminal rodoviário. Sentava na extinta linha 701- Madureira x Alvorada e quando piscava já estava em casa, pois viajava lendo ferozmente as matérias.
Saiam muitas revistas especiais sobre Bruce Lee. Todas elas prometiam "Fotos nunca antes vistas do Dragão" ou algo parecido... Na dúvida, eu comprava todas.

From 1998, I started buying martial arts magazines sold at the newsstands in my city. In those days, when the internet was not as strong as it is today, our main source of martial arts information was still specialized magazines.
In the market, there were renowned magazines in Brazil such as "KIAI" and others not so clear as "Trump!". I didn't even care! I bought them all and read right away.
In 1999, I used to buy my magazines at the newsstand in front of the Caixa Economica Bank in Madureira neighborhood(North Zone) and go to the bus terminal. I was sitting on the extinct line 701- Madureira x Alvorada Terminal and when I blinked I was already home, as I used to travel ferociously reading the stories.
There are a lot of special magazines about Bruce Lee. They all promised "Never-before-seen photos of the Dragon" or something ... When in doubt, I bought them all.

Vinte anos depois daqueles dias de altas aventuras, foi indicado pela Si Suk Bruna Piantino, para conduzir um "Encontro dos 8" sobre Bruce Lee. O "Encontro dos 8" é uma atividade promovida pelo "Moy Yat Institute" de São Paulo, que reúne toda a semana: Mestres, praticantes, convidados e entusiastas em uma video-conferência de uma hora para tratar de algum tema relacionado ao círculo marcial ou cultura chinesa.  Esses encontros sempre contam com a presença ilustre de Grão Mestre Leo Imamura, e desta vez não seria diferente.

Twenty years after those days of high adventures, I was nominated by Si Suk Bruna Piantino to conduct a "Meeting of the 8" about Bruce Lee. The "Meeting of the 8" is an activity promoted by the "Moy Yat Institute" of Sao Paulo, which gathers all week: Masters, practitioners, guests, and enthusiasts in a one-hour video conference to discuss some theme related to the martial circle or Chinese culture. These meetings always feature Grand Master Leo Imamura's illustrious presence, and this time would be no different.

Os Diretores do Núcleo Méier, Cayo e Caroline(foto), organizaram o Mo Gun de uma forma que outros membros como Luiz, Rafa, Lee e Claudia, pudessem acompanhar ao vivo.
Foi muito emocionante para mim estar naquele Hangouts conduzindo o processo para o Si Gung e os participantes. E enquanto o fazia, me lembrava de todas as viagens no 701 Madureira x Alvorada que fiz lendo sobre Bruce Lee naquelas revistas.

MYVT Meier School Directors, Cayo and Caroline (photo) organized Mo Gun in a way that other members such as Luiz, Rafa, Lee and Claudia could follow live.
It was very exciting for me to be in that Hangouts leading the process for Si Gung and the participants. And as I did so, I remembered all the 701 Madureira x Alvorada bus trips I made reading about Bruce Lee in those magazines.

A experiência deu tão certo, que agendamos um novo "Encontro" na semana seguinte. Desta vez, falaríamos da "Influência Cultural de Bruce Lee". Para preparar o material, resolvi ir fundo nos aspectos do cinema chinês e de como a participação de Bruce Lee mudou o paradigma deste seguimento mundialmente.

The experience worked so well that we scheduled a new "Meeting of the 8" the following week. This time we would talk about "Bruce Lee's Cultural Influence.". And to prepare the material, I decided to dig deep into the aspects of Chinese cinema and how Bruce Lee's participation changed the paradigm of this follow-up worldwide.

Desta vez, Si Gung deu uma aula inacreditável sobre cinema chinês. Sempre respeitei muito seu conhecimento e sua busca por mais conhecimento ainda, sempre citando autores os quais ainda não tínhamos conhecimento e que nos ajudam a clarear por uma via academica, nosso entendimento não só das artes marciais chinesas, como também do "Pensamento Clássico Chinês".
Porém, naquele segundo Encontro, Si Gung nos guiou por mais de meio século da industria cinematográfica chinesa, pontuando curiosidades sobre a participação de Bruce Lee. Foi mágico!

This time Si Gung gave an unbelievable class about Chinese cinema. I have always respected his knowledge and his quest for even more knowledge, always citing authors we were unaware of and who help us to clarify academically our understanding not only of Chinese martial arts, but also of "Chinese Classical Thinking." .
However, at that second Meeting, Si Gung guided us through more than half a century of the Chinese film industry, punctuating curiosities about Bruce Lee's participation. It was magical!

A Família Moy Fat Lei se fez presente novamente e desta vez contamos com a presença da Chris Chagas (à esq.) que não nos visitava a um certo tempo. Foi bom estar com a Família reunida nesse momento novamente.

The Moy Fat Lei Family was present again and this time we had Chris Chagas (left) who was not visiting us for a while. It was good to be with the Family together at this time again.

Si Gung(FOTO) dizia às vezes que eu era "um dos últimos Brucelianos" (risos). E pensando agora nestas duas oportunidades de conduzir um debate sobre o tema "Bruce Lee" com uma das maiores autoridades de Ving Tsun do mundo que por acaso é meu Si Gung. Acredito, que de alguma forma misteriosa, o trabalho duro compensa.

Si Gung (PHOTO) sometimes said that I was "one of the last Brucelians" (laughs). And now thinking of these two opportunities to conduct a debate on the "Bruce Lee" theme with one of the world's greatest Ving Tsun authorities who happens to be my Si Gung. I believe that, somehow in mysterious ways, hard work pays off.
