The organiser of Grandmaster Leo’s birthday in 2026

 

A Professora Vanise Almeida teria comentado, por algumas vezes, a respeito da importância de sabermos apreciar momentos de celebração e de trabalharmos com zelo e acolhimento no pré-evento, de maneira que seja possível aprendermos a celebrar e evitarmos ficar tensos em momentos assim. Depois de tantas décadas, isso vem ocorrendo ano após ano no aniversário do Grão-Mestre Leo Imamura.

Ainda segundo a cofundadora do Moy Yat Ving Tsun Safeguard Group, o aniversário de um Si Fu deveria ser um momento de reencontros, reaproximações, tréguas e apaziguamentos. Desde a excelente celebração dos 60 anos do Grão-Mestre, realizada em Brasília em 2023, tenho tido a felicidade de acompanhar os descendentes do Grão-Mestre Leo se dedicarem não apenas a manter o alto nível promovido em Brasília, mas também o espírito de fazer com bom grado e valorizar a oportunidade de fazê-lo.

Este ano, o Mestre Sênior Herbert Morais foi o organizador do evento, que ocorreu em São Paulo. Contando com a ajuda do Mestre Francisco Ferrero(dentre outros), o Mestre Herbert conseguiu promover mais um evento inesquecível, que ajudou a consolidar esse novo momento. Trata-se de um novo tipo de empenho para que uma celebração como essa ocorra, uma celebração que resulta justamente da ausência de esforço percebido, pois o propósito é tão forte que tudo flui naturalmente.

Professor Vanise Almeida has, on several occasions, commented on the importance of learning how to appreciate moments of celebration and of working with care and a spirit of hospitality in the pre-event phase, so that we may truly learn how to celebrate and avoid becoming tense during such occasions. After so many decades, this has been taking place year after year at the birthday celebration of Grandmaster Leo Imamura.

According to the co-founder of the Moy Yat Ving Tsun Safeguard Group, a Si Fu’s birthday should be a moment for reunions, renewed connections, truces, and reconciliation. Since the excellent celebration of the Grandmaster’s 60th birthday, held in Brasília in 2023, I have had the pleasure of witnessing his descendants dedicate themselves not only to maintaining the high standard established there, but also to cultivating the spirit of acting with goodwill and valuing the opportunity to do so.

This year, Senior Master Herbert Morais organised the event, which took place in São Paulo. With the support of Master Francisco Ferrero, among others, Master Herbert succeeded in delivering yet another unforgettable occasion, further consolidating this new phase. It reflects a distinct kind of commitment through which such a celebration comes to life, one that appears effortless, as the purpose is so strong that everything unfolds naturally.

Graças à iniciativa do Mestre Herbert e ao fluxo natural das coisas, essa celebração, que seria realizada em São Roque, acabou acontecendo em São Paulo. Com isso, foi possível contar com presenças mais que especiais, como a do Sr. Imamura (foto), pai do Grão-Mestre, que nos brindou com um discurso muito emocionante, deixando o Grão-Mestre Pete Pajil profundamente tocado.

A energia que o Sr. Imamura colocou em cada palavra tocou a todos nós. Em alto e bom som, ele expressou seu orgulho pela trajetória do filho e por sua dedicação em promover uma formação capacitadora, que permitiu a formação de muitos Mestres. Nesse momento, o Sr. Imamura pediu que esses se levantassem, para que também pudessem ser homenageados.

Além do Sr. Imamura, estiveram presentes a Sra. Imamura, mãe do Grão-Mestre, seu irmão, o Sr. Evandro, e seu primo, o Sr. Takeo. Também marcaram presença sua esposa, Sra. Maria Paula, e seus filhos, que estiveram lá para prestigiá-lo.

Thanks to Master Herbert’s initiative and the natural course of events, the celebration, which was originally to be held in São Roque, ultimately took place in São Paulo. This made it possible to welcome particularly special guests, including Mr Imamura (photo), the Grandmaster’s father, who honoured us with a deeply moving speech that profoundly touched Grandmaster Pete Pajil.

The energy Mr Imamura invested in each word resonated with all of us. Speaking clearly and with conviction, he expressed his pride in his son’s journey and in his dedication to fostering a form of training that has enabled the development of many Masters. At that moment, Mr Imamura invited them to stand, so that they too might be honoured.

In addition to Mr Imamura, those in attendance included Mrs Imamura, the Grandmaster’s mother, his brother, Mr Evandro, and his cousin, Mr Takeo. His wife, Mrs Maria Paula, and their children were also present to pay tribute to him.

Ainda graças à iniciativa do Mestre Herbert, o ambiente criado por ele e pelas pessoas que o ajudaram foi suficientemente propício para que anúncios muito especiais fossem feitos. Um deles foi o do Mestre Sênior Anderson Maia (foto), que ladeado pelo Mestre Mordente, anunciou o novo Mo Gun de sua Família Kung Fu, que agora se trata de um imóvel próprio, uma conquista que deixou todos no recinto muito felizes por ele. Afinal, como teria dito o Grão-Mestre Leo em uma oportunidade, “Quando um perde, perdemos todos; quando um ganha, ganhamos todos também”.

Já o irmão Kung Fu do Grão-Mestre, o Si Fu Joseph Hayes, anunciou o livro que está escrevendo em coautoria com ele, uma reedição em inglês, atualizada em todos os níveis, da obra “Biu Ji” (originalmente “Biu Je”, de 1994). Segundo ele, esse lançamento marcará o início de uma série de outros livros sobre cada Domínio do Sistema.

Por fim, houve também um anúncio importantíssimo do Mestre Sênior Tiago Quintela, que será abordado mais adiante.

Once again, thanks to Master Herbert’s initiative, the environment created by him and those who supported him proved sufficiently conducive for a number of very special announcements to be made. One of these came from Senior Master Anderson Maia (photo), who, alongside Master Mordente, announced the new Mo Gun of his Kung Fu Family, which now consists of a property of its own, an achievement that brought great joy to everyone present. As Grandmaster Leo once remarked, “When one loses, we all lose; when one wins, we all win as well.”

Meanwhile, the Grandmaster’s Kung Fu brother, Si Fu Joseph Hayes, announced the book he is co-authoring with him, an English-language reissue of Biu Ji (originally Biu Je, 1994), updated at every level. According to him, this publication will mark the beginning of a broader series of books dedicated to each Domain of the System.

Finally, there was also a highly significant announcement by Senior Master Tiago Quintela, which will be addressed later.

O Mestre Sênior Herbert manteve uma conduta muito inspiradora no sentido de atender a qualquer pedido do Grão-Mestre Leo Imamura com a maior dedicação. No entanto, algo que lhe era especialmente caro era a presença de sua Si Mo, a Sra. Márcia, e de sua Si Taai, a Professora Vanise (foto acima).

O Mestre Herbert se dedicou de coração para que essas presenças fossem possíveis, e conseguiu. Com isso, a cofundadora do Moy Yat Ving Tsun Safeguard Group pôde, graças ao seu empenho nos momentos de prefiguração, estar presente, pela primeira vez desde 2019, no evento mais importante do Grande Clã. Além disso, também foi possível trazer sua Si Mo com sua filha para o evento que ele teve a honra de organizar.

Particularmente, fiquei muito tocado ao ver as duas no recinto, pois sabia o quanto o Herbert se dedicou para que aquilo fosse possível. Talvez você que está lendo não compreenda a importância de gestos assim, mas, ainda que eu não saiba colocar tudo em palavras, acredito que consigo compreender o Mestre Herbert.

Senior Master Herbert conducted himself in a truly inspiring manner, attending to any request from Grandmaster Leo Imamura with the utmost dedication. Yet something particularly dear to him was the presence of his Si Mo, Mrs Márcia, and his Si Taai, Professor Vanise (photo above).

Master Herbert devoted himself wholeheartedly to making their presence possible, and he succeeded. As a result, the co-founder of the Moy Yat Ving Tsun Safeguard Group was able, thanks to his efforts during the pre-event preparations, to attend, for the first time since 2019, the most important event of the Grand Clan. In addition, it was also possible his Si Mo and her daughter to attend the event that he had the honour of organising.

Personally, I was deeply moved to see the two of them in attendance, as I knew how much Herbert had dedicated himself to making it possible. You, reading this, may not fully appreciate the significance of such gestures, but even if I cannot express it entirely in words, I believe I can truly understand Master Herbert.

Tivemos também, em dezembro, um estudo do Nível Superior Final no Instituto Moy Yat, que foi promovido pelo Mestre Sênior Herbert. Na ocasião, contamos com a presença do Mestre Ferrero (foto acima), que veio diretamente de Córdoba, na Argentina.

Naquele momento, o Grão-Mestre Leo teria feito um apontamento ao mencionar que, muitas vezes, o Mestre Ferrero estava presente, enquanto em outros momentos não. Com o coração aberto de sempre, o querido discípulo argentino do lendário Mestre Celso Grande levou em consideração o que seu Si Gung disse e, hoje, promove um reestudo do Programa de Salvaguarda. Além disso, apoiou seu irmão Kung Fu Herbert de maneira exemplar para todo o Grande Clã, em todos os momentos da organização da celebração.

Sua presença também foi muito importante nos dias que se seguiram ao evento, sendo um apoio fundamental ao Grão-Mestre. E tudo isso por conta de duas iniciativas do Mestre Herbert. Incrível, não é?

O exemplo do Mestre Francisco deixa claro o excelente trabalho que o Mestre Celso Grande realizou, um legado que perdura além do seu tempo de vida. Ambos, Herbert e Francisco, são prova disso.

In December, we also held a Final Advanced Level study at the Moy Yat Institute, organised by Senior Master Herbert. On that occasion, we were honoured by the presence of Master Ferrero (photo above), who had come directly from Córdoba, Argentina.

At the time, Grandmaster Leo remarked that, on many occasions, Master Ferrero had been present, while at other times he had not. With his customary open-heartedness, the beloved Argentine disciple of the legendary Master Celso Grande took his Si Gung’s words to heart and now leads a review of the Safeguard Programme. Moreover, he supported his Kung Fu brother Herbert in an exemplary manner throughout the organisation of the celebration, for the benefit of the entire Grand Clan.

His presence was also crucial in the days following the event, serving as a fundamental support to the Grandmaster. And all of this came about thanks to two initiatives by Master Herbert. Remarkable, isn’t it?

The example set by Master Francisco clearly demonstrates the excellent work carried out by Master Celso Grande, a legacy that endures well beyond his lifetime. Both Herbert and Francisco stand as proof of this.

Um dos momentos divertidos dos quais participei durante o processo de organização foi quando fomos almoçar com os pais do Si Gung no TF, no Brooklin, ocasião em que o Mestre Sênior Herbert também estaria presente. Comentei com o Si Gung: “Acho que o Herbert vai perguntar ao senhor quem estará presente no aniversário”. Eu disse isso já rindo, pois, por experiência própria, sabia que esse tipo de confirmação costuma ser feita mais próximo da data.

Já no restaurante, o Grão-Mestre perguntou como estava indo a organização e, entre alguns pontos, o Mestre Herbert questionou se o Si Gung já sabia quem viria. Com toda a sua capacidade de personalização, ele respondeu: “Prometo que vou ver isso para você o mais rápido possível”.

Naquele momento, fiquei refletindo sobre como atuo com meus próprios discípulos. Lembrei que, no ano passado, para mim ele teria dito algo como: “Ainda não sei, só terei essa resposta depois do Ano-Novo”. Em outra oportunidade, faltando quatro dias para o evento começar, ele me ligou enquanto eu estava no metrô General Osório e disse, rindo: “Tenho uma notícia, você quer com emoção ou sem emoção?”. Respondi: “Com emoção, sempre”.

Percebi, então, que talvez eu tenha, em diversos momentos, passado demandas a diferentes discípulos sem personalizar de acordo com cada pessoa, enquanto ali eu o via agir de maneira diferente.

De toda forma, o Mestre Sênior Herbert viabilizou a presença de quatro discípulos do Patriarca Moy Yat, alguns deles acompanhados de seus próprios discípulos, o que enriqueceu imensamente tudo o que viria a acontecer. O Instituto Moy Yat, por exemplo, foi extremamente beneficiado por esse movimento, especialmente pela possibilidade de registrar material para o nosso acervo com esses dignatários abordando temas tão relevantes, algo que não tem preço.

One of the more amusing moments I experienced during the organisation process occurred when we went to lunch with the parents of Si Gung at TF in Brooklin, an occasion on which Senior Master Herbert would also be present. I remarked to Si Gung, “I think Herbert will ask you who will be attending the birthday.” I said this with a laugh, knowing from experience that such confirmations are usually made closer to the date.

At the restaurant, the Grand master inquired about how the preparations were going, and among other matters, Master Herbert asked whether Si Gung already knew who would be attending. With his characteristic attention to personal detail, he replied, “I promise I will find out for you as quickly as possible.”

At that moment, I reflected on how I interact with my own disciples. I recalled that, last year, he had told me something along the lines of, “I don’t know yet; I’ll only have an answer after the New Year.” On another occasion, just four days before the event was due to begin, he called me while I was on the Ipanema metro station and said, laughing, “I have news ... do you want it with emotion or without?” I replied, “With emotion, always.”

I realised then that, at various times, I may have assigned tasks to different disciples without tailoring them to the individual, whereas there I could see him acting differently.

In any case, Senior Master Herbert ensured the presence of four disciples of Patriarch Moy Yat, some accompanied by their own disciples, which greatly enriched everything that was to unfold. The Moy Yat Institute, for example, benefited immensely from this, particularly in the opportunity to record material for our archive with these dignitaries discussing topics of such significance , an opportunity that is truly priceless.

Uma coisa que quero deixar registrada neste artigo é o quanto o trabalho do Mestre Celso Grande segue sendo, para mim, inspirador e misterioso. Tenho absoluta certeza de que o Mestre Herbert fez tudo isso também para honrar o seu Si Fu, o Clã Moy Lin Dei e a sua própria família. E ele conseguiu muito mais do que isso.

Há uma fala do Grão-Mestre Leo da qual sempre me lembro: “Devemos sempre dar o exemplo, mesmo que ninguém esteja seguindo”. Acredito que o Herbert personifica completamente essa ideia.

Fico feliz por poder presenciar alguém se entregar dessa forma e espero, no futuro, ser um Si Fu capaz de mobilizar os discípulos dessa maneira, assim como o Mestre Celso ainda mobiliza os seus.

One thing I wish to record in this article is how inspiring and mysterious Master Celso Grande’s work continues to be for me. I am absolutely certain that Master Herbert undertook all of this also to honour his Si Fu, the Moy Lin Dei Clan, and his own family. Yet he achieved far more than that.

There is a saying of Grand master Leo that I always remember: “We must always set an example, even if no one is following.” I believe that Herbert embodies this principle completely.

I am grateful to witness someone so fully dedicated, and I hope that, in the future, I may be a Si Fu capable of inspiring my disciples in the same way, just as Master Celso continues to inspire his.
