The Formidable Leadership of Master Camiz at the Moy Yat Institute During the Event

Eu estava na padaria Manhattan conversando com meu discípulo Lucas, como sempre fazemos no início ou ao final de um dia, e sugeri a ele procurar estar mais próximo do Mestre Camiz, presidente do Instituto Moy Yat. Lucas tem um caminho profissional e alguns objetivos bem claros, mas ama o Sistema Ving Tsun e, às vezes, se preocupa com como equilibrar as coisas. Nesse momento, pensei no Mestre Sênior Paulo Camiz.

Sei que, para muitos que possam estar lendo, talvez essa orientação não faça muito sentido. Lembro de ter escutado uma vez algo como: “Não vejo muito sentido nessa ‘transmissão em diagonal’”. A pessoa fazia referência ao Mestre Camiz ser “Si Suk Gung” do Lucas. Porém, como membro do Safeguard Group e por influência de mentes como a do Mestre Quintela, minha ideia é sempre fazer uso da rede de apoio em seu máximo.

Uma coisa que aprendi enquanto estudava para os trabalhos realizados entre 2024 e 2025 nas forças de operações especiais com o Mestre Sênior Fabio Gomes é que esses operadores sempre avançam. Não importa o que esteja acontecendo; enquanto outros correm, esses operadores de elite buscam uma forma de avançar. E é essa mentalidade que procuro ter com meus alunos, pois, se eu não sou naquele momento o melhor exemplo ou a pessoa mais adequada para ser a referência, a rede de apoio pode favorecer meu discípulo a avançar.

Mas por que o Mestre Camiz?

I was at Manhattan Bakery speaking with my disciple Lucas, as we often do at the beginning or end of a day, and I suggested that he seek to draw closer to Master Camiz, President of the Moy Yat Institute. Lucas has a well-defined professional path and clear objectives, yet he deeply loves the Ving Tsun System and, at times, is concerned about how to balance these aspects of his life. At that moment, I thought of Senior Master Paulo Camiz.

I understand that, for many who may be reading this, such guidance might not make much sense. I recall once hearing something along the lines of: “I do not see much sense in this ‘diagonal transmission’.” The person was referring to the fact that Master Camiz is Lucas’s “Si Suk Gung”. However, as a member of the Safeguard Group, and under the influence of minds such as that of Master Quintela, my approach is always to make the fullest possible use of the support network available to us.

One thing I learned while studying for the work carried out between 2024 and 2025 with the special operations forces, alongside Senior Master Fabio Gomes, is that such operators always advance. Regardless of what is happening, while others retreat, these elite operators seek a way to move forward. This is the mindset I strive to instil in my students. If, at a given moment, I am not the best example or the most suitable person to serve as a reference, the support network can enable my disciple to continue progressing.

But why Master Camiz?

Na preparação para o evento que ocorreu entre os dias 13 e 15 de março (ao menos oficialmente), passei por um episódio em que fiquei por cinco horas e meia, com a ajuda do meu To Dai Nathan de Assis, tentando desmontar uma estrutura. Eu não precisava fazer aquilo , poderia deixar para depois , mas intuía que a ausência daquela estrutura, já depreciada pelo tempo, traria um sentimento de avanço nas obras, não só para quem chegasse, como para mim também.

Aprendi isso com meu avô: para ele, o trabalho na obra terminava quando o serviço do dia realmente acabava. Ele não ligava muito para o relógio. Durante todo aquele dia, esteve conosco no Instituto o Grão-Mestre Leo Imamura. Ele se recusou a ir embora, mesmo tendo outros compromissos, e sua presença, ao menos para mim, foi um exemplo do tipo de liderança em que acredito. É muito fácil simplesmente ir embora, mas ele ficou conosco e passou horas atuando também na melhoria do instituto.

Faltando apenas dois dias para a chegada das pessoas, chovia, e eu tentava organizar o que seria descartado o mais rápido possível, pois ainda havia muito trabalho a fazer. O Mestre Camiz, que é médico, chegou com sua roupa limpa e arrumada, arregaçou as mangas e, com seu tom de voz habitual , sempre com um toque de motivação , perguntou no que poderia ajudar.

Durante aquele singelo momento que passamos juntos, foi possível conhecê-lo um pouco melhor, e percebi que estava certo quando sugeri ao Lucas procurá-lo. Dentre tudo o que conversamos, ficou para mim a lição silenciosa de alguém que administra muitas pessoas em todos os momentos do dia , passando pela esposa, pelas filhas e por todos os seus pacientes, sem esquecer de seus alunos e de si mesmo. O Mestre Camiz sempre demonstra uma energia positiva e oferece uma palavra de incentivo ou motivação.

Refleti sobre minha própria atitude e percebi que estar determinado não significa, necessariamente, estar sério o tempo todo. Podemos nos dedicar com um semblante leve. Obviamente, o Si Gung faz isso o tempo todo, mas acredito que o Mestre Camiz tenha absorvido essa característica com grande eficácia. Resolvi me dedicar a esse desafio.

In preparation for the event that took place between the 13th and 15th of March (at least officially), I went through an episode in which I spent five and a half hours, with the help of my To Dai, Nathan de Assis, attempting to dismantle a structure. I did not need to do that , I could have left it for later , but I sensed that the absence of that structure, already worn down by time, would bring a feeling of progress to the works, not only for those arriving, but for myself as well.

I learned this from my grandfather: for him, work on a site ended only when the day’s tasks were truly complete. He paid little attention to the clock. Throughout that entire day, Grandmaster Leo Imamura was with us at the Institute. He refused to leave, even though he had other commitments, and his presence, at least for me, was an example of the kind of leadership I believe in. It is very easy simply to leave, yet he remained with us and spent hours contributing to the improvement of the Institute.

With only two days remaining before people arrived, it was raining, and I was trying to organise what would be discarded as quickly as possible, as there was still much work to be done. Master Camiz, who is a doctor, arrived in clean, well-presented attire, rolled up his sleeves and, in his usual tone of voice , always carrying a note of encouragement , asked how he could help.

During that brief yet meaningful moment we shared, I was able to get to know him a little better, and I realised that I had been right in suggesting that Lucas seek him out. Among everything we discussed, what remained with me was the quiet lesson of someone who manages many people at all times of the day , from his wife and daughters to all his patients, without neglecting his students or himself. Master Camiz consistently displays a positive energy and offers a word of encouragement or motivation.

I reflected on my own attitude and realised that being determined does not necessarily mean being serious all the time. We can dedicate ourselves while maintaining a light demeanour. Naturally, Si Gung embodies this at all times, yet I believe that Master Camiz has absorbed this quality with particular effectiveness. I resolved to dedicate myself to this challenge.

O Instituto Moy Yat, sob a presidência do Mestre Camiz, recebeu, entre os dias 12 e 18 de março, dignatários do Brasil e do exterior, descendentes da linhagem Moy Yat. Dentre eles, estiveram presentes o filho do Patriarca e Presidente Global do Instituto, Grão-Mestre William Moy, além dos Grão-Mestres Pete Pajil e Miguel Hernandez. Ainda representando a décima geração, esteve presente o Si Fu JP.

Todo esse evento ocorreu em função do aniversário do Grão-Mestre Leo Imamura, que é Si Fu do Mestre Camiz. O trabalho que o Grão-Mestre vem desenvolvendo com seu discípulo é muito especial. Sua confiança nele parece inabalável, assim como a confiança do Mestre Camiz em seu Si Fu. Por isso, não há nada que seu Si Fu sugira ou solicite que ele não busque viabilizar, criando as condicionantes para que o pedido seja atendido de forma inevitável.

Da mesma forma, procuro, a todo custo, me colocar disponível, o que tem gerado uma parceria muito positiva, na qual cada um de nós cumpre sua parte sem hesitação.

Ouvi de um integrante dos Comandos do Exército Brasileiro que devemos nos apaixonar pelo ato de servir , e de fato todos nós, em diferentes instâncias, estamos servindo a um propósito maior do que conseguimos dimensionar.

Devido a um arranjo genealógico, muitas vezes pode parecer, para alguns, que estamos servindo a alguém, ou que, quando essa pessoa nos faz uma solicitação, isso pode ser mal interpretado. No entanto, trata-se de uma questão de organização geracional, algo que o Grão-Mestre Leo Imamura faz questão de evitar dentro da gestão do Instituto.

Por isso, contamos também com um processo hierárquico bem definido, no qual, mais uma vez, o Mestre Camiz tem se destacado.

The Moy Yat Institute, under the presidency of Master Camiz, received, between the 12th and 18th of March, dignitaries from Brazil and abroad, all descendants of the Moy Yat lineage. Among them were the son of the Patriarch and Global President of the Institute, Grandmaster William Moy, as well as Grandmasters Pete Pajil and Miguel Hernandez. Representing the tenth generation, Si Fu JP was also in attendance.

This entire event took place in celebration of the birthday of Grandmaster Leo Imamura, who is the Si Fu of Master Camiz. The work that the Grandmaster has been developing with his disciple is truly remarkable. His trust in him appears unshakeable, just as Master Camiz’s trust in his Si Fu is equally steadfast. For this reason, there is nothing that his Si Fu suggests or requests that he does not endeavour to make possible, creating the necessary conditions for it to be fulfilled.

In the same way, I strive, at all costs, to make myself available, which has resulted in a very positive partnership, in which each of us fulfils our role without hesitation.

I once heard from a member of the Brazilian Army Commando that we must fall in love with the act of serving , and indeed, all of us, in different capacities, are serving a purpose far greater than we are able to fully comprehend.

Owing to a genealogical arrangement, it may sometimes appear, to some, that we are serving an individual, or that when such a person makes a request of us, it could be misinterpreted. However, it is in fact a matter of generational organisation , something that Grandmaster Leo Imamura is keen to prevent within the Institute’s management.

For this reason, we also rely on a clearly defined hierarchical process, within which, once again, Master Camiz has distinguished himself.

 conduziu tudo de forma a não evidenciar essa situação.

O Mestre Camiz tem uma habilidade de liderança que, para mim, tem sido uma verdadeira aula , algo que, provavelmente, meus discípulos já se cansaram de me ouvir elogiar. Talvez, por ser uma conduta que eu ainda não alcancei, isso me chame tanto a atenção. Fica também evidente a razão de sua indicação para a presidência, pois, além de sua aparente aptidão natural para gerir situações, conflitos e pessoas, ele conta com a assessoria do Grão-Mestre Leo Imamura.

Sua liderança é sempre propositiva , nunca conflitante, nunca impositiva. Ele não toma partido de forma precipitada; ao contrário, frequentemente surpreende ao dar suporte a uma ideia por meio de uma perspectiva que você ainda não havia considerado. Com ele, as situações parecem sempre ter um ângulo que transmite a sensação de que há tempo ou de que tudo está sob controle. É algo realmente formidável.

Por isso, o evento do último final de semana foi um sucesso. Ouvi em uma palestra do Bernardinho, enquanto pintava o Instituto, que, na seleção brasileira de vôlei que ele dirigia, o mais importante era o nome à frente da camisa , “Brasil” , e não o nome nas costas, que representa o jogador. E o Mestre Camiz é alguém que personifica esse compromisso com o propósito.

Este artigo é um singelo relato da admiração que tenho pela inteligência do Mestre Camiz para liderar, assim como tenho pela inteligência do Mestre Gabriel em relação ao Sistema. E insisto nisso porque acredito muito na importância de apreciarmos o melhor que conseguimos enxergar em cada pessoa ao nosso redor , e de buscarmos evoluir também a partir dessas referências.

Master Camiz possesses a leadership ability that, for me, has been a true lesson , something my disciples have likely grown tired of hearing me praise. Perhaps because it is a standard I have not yet attained, it draws my attention all the more. It also makes clear the reason for his appointment to the presidency, as, beyond his apparent natural aptitude for managing situations, conflicts and people, he benefits from the guidance of Grandmaster Leo Imamura.

His leadership is always constructive , never confrontational, never imposed. He does not take sides hastily; on the contrary, he often surprises by supporting an idea through a perspective one had not previously considered. With him, situations always seem to reveal an angle that conveys a sense that there is time, or that everything is under control. It is truly remarkable.

For this reason, last weekend’s event was a success. I once heard in a lecture by Bernardinho (brazilian multi-champion Volleyball coach), while I was painting the Institute, that within the Brazilian national volleyball team he coached, the most important name was the one on the front of the shirt — “Brazil” — and not the name on the back, which represents the individual player. Master Camiz is someone who embodies this commitment to purpose.

This article is a modest account of the admiration I hold for Master Camiz’s intelligence in leadership, just as I admire Master Gabriel’s intelligence in relation to the System. I insist upon this because I firmly believe in the importance of appreciating the best we are able to see in each person around us, and in striving to improve ourselves through those very examples.
