The preparation for Grandmaster Leo Imamura's birthday : RIO 2025

Na minha última noite em Bangkok, tive uma experiência muito especial. Estava sentado à mesa de um restaurante chinês, sem a presença do Mestre Fabio Gomes, em uma cidade que visitava pela primeira vez. Junto de mim, estavam pessoas queridas, nascidas na Tailândia, que conheci. O que me chamou a atenção naquelas horas de conversa, nas quais todos se esforçavam para falar inglês para que eu pudesse participar, era principalmente o teor das conversas. Elas não eram maliciosas, nem tinham o intuito de contar vantagens; ninguém tentava contar a melhor história da mesa ou chamar a atenção para si. Quando essas pessoas ouviam, elas ouviam de verdade, e mesmo quando eu contei uma história que percebi imediatamente que não teria a menor graça ao terminar, elas sorriram educadamente. Saí dali com uma sensação boa, de que existe, sim, um lugar onde você pode ter uma conversa sem ter que ouvir alguém contar sobre suas grandes aventuras.

Da mesma forma, tem sido minha experiência como um dos participantes da organização do aniversário do Grão-Mestre Leo Imamura este ano. Absolutamente todos os envolvidos estão participando com a maior boa vontade possível. Todos ajudam, cumprem o que se comprometeram, disponibilizam seu tempo, se oferecem para participar, etc. Além disso, as lideranças não repassam as missões de sua responsabilidade para seus discípulos; elas abrem espaço para que eles participem, mas fica sempre muito claro algo que o Grão-Mestre Leo Imamura pontuou em outra oportunidade: "O aniversário do seu Si Fu quem tem que organizar é você, para que seu discípulo veja como você faz."

On my last night in Bangkok, I had a very special experience. I was sitting at a table in a Chinese restaurant, without the presence of Master Fabio Gomes, in a city I was visiting for the first time. With me were dear people, born in Thailand, whom I had met. What struck me during those hours of conversation, in which everyone made an effort to speak English so I could participate, was primarily the nature of the conversations. They were not malicious, nor did they have the intention of boasting; no one tried to tell the best story at the table or draw attention to themselves. When these people listened, they truly listened, and even when I told a story that I immediately realised wouldn’t be the least bit funny when I finished, they smiled politely. I left feeling good, knowing that there is, indeed, a place where you can have a conversation without having to listen to someone talk about his great adventures.

In the same way, this has been my experience as one of the participants in organising Grandmaster Leo Imamura’s birthday this year. Absolutely everyone involved is participating with the utmost goodwill. Everyone helps, does what they committed to, makes their time available, offers to participate, etc. Furthermore, the leaders do not pass their responsibilities on to their disciples; they make room for them to participate, but it is always very clear what Grandmaster Leo Imamura pointed out on another occasion: "The anniversary of your Si Fu is something you must organise, so your disciple can see how you do it."

Ontem fizemos a primeira visita técnica ao hotel. Estiveram presentes: Mestre Fabio Gomes, sua esposa Adriana Lima, Mestre Geraldo Monnerat com seus To Dai Douglas e Vini, além do Mestre Felipe Soares com a co-líder de sua Família Kung Fu, e esposa Elisa Wanderley. Além deles, estavam comigo e meu discípulo Keith Markus.

Recentemente, o Grão-Mestre Leo Imamura me deu uma orientação: fosse lá o que eu estivesse fazendo, deveria sempre pensar na "Salvaguarda do Sistema Ving Tsun". Por isso, aquela visita técnica tinha muitas camadas, que mudavam de posição numa lista de prioridades para aquela manhã com grande velocidade. No entanto, uma dessas camadas dizia respeito ao provimento de Vida Kung Fu ao meu discípulo. Por isso, fizemos um pré-evento na noite anterior e algumas horas antes, no café da manhã, antes da visita. Markus está em processo para ser titulado Mestre pela Moy Yat Ving Tsun Safeguard Group, e, por isso, acredito que seja importante que, cada vez mais, suas características pessoais não limitem a função que ele vai exercer.

Curiosamente, as características de Markus tendem, num primeiro momento, a parecerem positivas: uma pessoa leal, de palavra firme e em quem se pode confiar. Por outro lado, seu respeito por "Si Hing" e "Si Suk" tende a ser excessivo em alguns momentos, impedindo-o de perceber que há outros trabalhos a serem feitos, como compartilhar sua visão estratégica na condição de um discípulo experiente e futuro líder de Família...

Por isso, ontem pude observar o quanto Markus estava dedicado a se reapresentar em um cenário que, cada vez mais, se torna desafiador, com tantas nuances e arranjos no círculo marcial, no qual, muitas vezes, alguém de uma geração mais recente estaria mais inserido na Dimensão Kung Fu do que alguém de uma geração anterior. Caberá a Markus se encontrar como um dos atores dessas interações no Mo Lam.

Yesterday, we had our first technical visit to the hotel. Present were: Master Fabio Gomes, his wife Adriana Lima, Master Geraldo Monnerat with his To Dai Douglas and Vini, as well as Master Felipe Soares with the co-leader of his Kung Fu Family, his wife Elisa Wanderley. Additionally, my disciple Keith Markus and I were also there.

Recently, Grandmaster Leo Imamura gave me guidance: whatever I was doing, I should always think about the "Safeguarding of the Ving Tsun System." Therefore, this technical visit had many layers, which rapidly shifted in priority throughout the morning. One of these layers, however, was related to providing Kung Fu Life to my disciple. For this reason, we held a pre-event the night before and also a few hours earlier at breakfast, before the visit. Markus is in the process of being titled as Master by the Moy Yat Ving Tsun Safeguard Group, and because of this, I believe it is crucial that his personal characteristics no longer limit the role he is going to assume.

Interestingly, Markus' characteristics tend, at first, to appear positive: a loyal person, with a firm word, and someone you can rely on. On the other hand, his respect for "Si Hing" and "Si Suk" tends to be excessive at times, preventing him from recognising that there are other tasks to be done, such as sharing his strategic vision as an experienced disciple and future leader of a Family.

Therefore, yesterday I was able to observe how dedicated Markus was to repositioning himself in a scenario that is increasingly becoming challenging, with many nuances and arrangements in the martial arts circles, in which, at times, someone from a more recent generation might be more involved in the Kung Fu Dimension than someone from an older generation. It will be up to Markus to find his place as one of the key actors in these interactions within the Mo Lam.

Eu realmente saí do hotel ontem, após a Visita Técnica, com um sentimento muito bom de que será um evento único, que vai honrar as várias instâncias do trabalho que realizamos, entre elas a organizacional e a familiar, mas também a do Grão-Mestre Leo Imamura, que, na sua figura, exerce uma série de funções de liderança. E este é um ponto que tem sido para mim uma grande fonte de aprendizado: a dedicação do Grão-Mestre Leo e da Professora Vanise para com qualquer um de nós, quando requisitados. Ambos têm me atendido com todo o tempo e atenção possíveis, nunca pedindo nada além de que cada movimento esteja na Dimensão Kung Fu.

Grão-Mestre Leo Imamura, através de provocações sempre muito personalizadas, verifica a coerência do que está sendo proposto ou executado, às vezes com energia na pergunta, outras vezes com uma gargalhada após uma brincadeira sobre os desafios da organização. Não houve da parte dele absolutamente nenhum pedido por nada, e ainda assim, misteriosamente, tudo está sendo feito de maneira muito dedicada, cuidadosa e digna por parte dos organizadores.

Dessa forma, assim como na mesa daquele restaurante chinês em Bangkok, tenho me visto envolto neste círculo de boa-vontade e atenção cuidadosa, no qual, assim como as pessoas que estavam comigo na mesa não tentavam puxar a atenção para si e sorriam cordialmente, mesmo quando minha piada era ruim, tudo nesta organização está ocorrendo de maneira fluida, com o todo antes da parte, tudo permeado com muito zelo por parte de todos. Por isso, posso dizer que tem sido uma experiência transformadora. Que bom que nunca desisti.

I truly left the hotel yesterday after the Technical Visit with a very good feeling that it will be a unique event, one that will honour the various aspects of the work we do, including the organisational and familial ones, but also that of Grandmaster Leo Imamura, who, in his role, carries out a series of leadership functions. And this is a point that has been a great source of learning for me: the dedication of Grandmaster Leo and Professor Vanise to any of us when called upon. Both have given me their time and attention in the utmost possible way, never asking for anything other than that each movement be in the Kung Fu Dimension.

Grandmaster Leo Imamura, through very personalised provocations, checks the coherence of what is being proposed or executed, sometimes with energy in his question, other times with a laugh after making a joke about the challenges of the organisation. He has made absolutely no request for anything, and yet, mysteriously, everything is being done in a very dedicated, careful, and dignified manner by the organisers.

In this way, just like at that table in the Chinese restaurant in Bangkok, I have found myself surrounded by this circle of goodwill and careful attention, where, just as the people at my table did not try to draw attention to themselves and smiled cordially even when my joke was bad, everything in this organisation is happening smoothly, with the whole before the part, all permeated by great care from everyone. Therefore, I can say that it has been a transformative experience. I’m glad I never gave up.
