Why is it so important that a Ving Tsun Master have released an epic fantasy book?

 Já está no ar para download a versão em ingles do livro de fantasia épica escrita pelo Mestre Leonardo Reis[FOTO ACIMA], chamado 'Storm Dragons'. Mais do que um simples review sobre o livro, começo o artigo com uma indagação: Por que é tão importante que um Mestre de Ving Tsun tenha escrito um livro de fantasia?

Existe um termo em francês chamado mise-en-scene que significa literalmente, 'por em cena'. O  mise-en-scene é a habilidade de um diretor de orquestrar o resultado final em conjunto com sua equipe e elenco do: Conteúdo dramático, a sonoplastia; o cenário; a iluminação; o figurino, a atuação, etc... Então, a mise-en-scene começa a ser construída na imaginação do diretor e vai ganhando forma durante ensaios e decupação de cada cena... 'O ator vai estar a esquerda ou a direita?..'  [A criação do desejo - Cinema e Psicanálise Vol. 1 - Dunker, Ana Lucia Rodrigues, 2015]

Portanto pela segunda vez na América Latina, vemos um Mestre de Kung Fu de alto calibre não falar das técnicas de sua arte, mas poderemos observar como seu Kung Fu se expressa através do engendramento entre personagens, cenários, falas e escolhas...  E 'Storm Dragons' que é chamado pelo autor de Cinelivro, tem uma possibilidade real, de permitir com que o leitor do círculo marcial, aprecie outras manifestações de Kung Fu que não sejam as mais óbvias. Pois como diz a Professora Anne Cheng, o Kung Fu foi popularizado no ocidente dentro de um sentido muito redutor devido ao cinema. E isso se aplica também aos praticantes, que por muitas vezes não vão se interessar pela expressão do artista quando a mesma não é aparente. 

O que é mais curioso, é que o próprio Mestre do autor do livro, o Mestre Senior Julio Camacho, atingiu grande sucesso a mais de vinte anos atrás com um livro chamado 'Tao do Surf - Zen e a Arte de pegar onda'. E agora ao adquirirmos a obra de Leonardo Reis,  poderemos saber se o discípulo número 1 de Mestre Julio Camacho, também compôs a mise-en-scene de seu Cinelivro com Kung Fu.

The English version of the epic fantasy book written by Master Leonardo Reis [PHOTO ABOVE], called 'Storm Dragons', is now available for download. More than a simple review of the book, I start the article with a question: Why is it so important that a Ving Tsun Master has written a fantasy book?

There is a French term called mise-en-scene which literally means, 'to put on the scene'. Mise-en-scene is a director's ability to orchestrate the final result together with his crew and cast of: Dramatic content, sound design; the set; the ilumination; the costumes, the acting, etc... Then, the mise-en-scene begins to be built in the director's imagination and takes shape during rehearsals and decoupage of each scene... 'The actor will be on the left or the right ?..'

Therefore, for the second time in Latin America, we see a high caliber Kung Fu Master not talking about the techniques of his art, but we will be able to observe how his Kung Fu is expressed through the engendering of characters, scenarios, lines and choices... And ' Storm Dragons', which is called by the author of CineNovel, has a real possibility, to allow the reader of the martial circle, to appreciate other manifestations of Kung Fu that are not the most obvious. As Professor Anne Cheng says, Kung Fu was popularized in the West in a very reductive sense due to cinema. And this also applies to practitioners, who are often not interested in the artist's expression when it is not apparent.

What is more curious is that the Master of the book's author, Senior Master Julio Camacho, achieved great success more than twenty years ago with a book called 'Tao do Surf - Zen and the Art of Surfing'. And now, when we acquire Leonardo Reis' work, we will be able to know if Master Julio Camacho's number 1 disciple also composed the mise-en-scene of his Cine-Novel with Kung Fu.

Reis] - Nesse trecho do livro, e em outros a seguir como na primeira luta da personagem Minara como uma Storm Dragon. Observamos que os embates tendem a acabar rapidamente e o autor faz um esforço real, para colocar sua verdade nos movimentos e decisões das personagens. Não é incomum, observar uma luta onde na impossibilidade de usar sua arma a perosoagem chuta. Ou, numa outra situação, usa o cabo da mesma. 

Observamos que no filme clássico 'Easy Rider', as personagens de Dennis Hopper e Peter Fonda estão prestes a iniciar sua viagem. Após ligarem suas motos, Peter Fonda num gesto simbólico joga fora seu relógio. E quando a estrada se abre a sua frente, a música 'Born to be Wild' explode na tela. O que seria apenas mais um filme de motociclistas, consegue redefinir o significado de viajar de moto para toda uma geração, fazendo uso da música e sua letra para constituir a ação. 

Mestre Leonardo Reis, em seu livro faz o mesmo em cenas como quando Zairos passa perto de ter sua mandíbula quebrada pelo adversário. Muito antes disso no livro, ele monta todo um cenário, que nos faz entender que aquele tipo de luta não pode ser perdida. E sabemos o quanto uma mandíbula solta, teria virado o jogo para o adversário e Zairos definitivamente. Porém, ao 'quase' ter esse acidente. Qualquer pessoa que já tenha levado um soco, sente o nervosismo do 'quase' junto de Zairos e toda a audiência que torce por ele na cena. Pois a construção desse momento, nos dá o frio na barriga da possibilidade de derrota total por uma falta de atenção momentanea. O mesmo erro que a personagem Oberin comete em 'Game of Thrones' ao lutar contra 'Montanha'.

Reis] - In this passage of the book, and in others to follow, as in the first fight of the character Minara as a Storm Dragon. We observe that the clashes tend to end quickly and the author makes a real effort to put his truth in the characters' movements and decisions. It is not uncommon to observe a fight where the inability to use your weapon the character kicks. Or, in another situation, use the same cable.

We see that in the classic movie 'Easy Rider', the characters of Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda are about to start their journey. After starting their motorcycles, Peter Fonda in a symbolic gesture throws away his watch. And when the road opens up in front of you, the song 'Born to be Wild' explodes on the screen. What would be just another motorcycle movie, manages to redefine the meaning of traveling by motorcycle for an entire generation, making use of the music and its lyrics to constitute the action.

Master Leonardo Reis, in his book, does the same in scenes like when Zairos passes close to having his jaw broken by his opponent. Long before that in the book, he sets up a whole scenario, which makes us understand that kind of fight cannot be lost. And we know how much a loose jaw would have turned the game around for the opponent and Zairos definitely. However, by 'almost' having this accident. Anyone who has ever been punched, feels the nervousness of the 'almost' with Zairos and the entire audience that cheers for him in the scene. Because the construction of this moment gives us butterflies in the belly of the possibility of total defeat due to a momentary lack of attention. The same mistake that the character Oberin makes in 'Game of Thrones' when fighting 'Mountain'.

Segundo ele: ' ...O Mestre de Kung Fu faz boas escolhas, pois as mesmas são feitas com base na sua pessoa como um todo. Não se refere apenas a ação, mas também ao estilo artístico realizado...' . 

Mestre Leonardo Reis se desafia, ao inserir dentre as armas lendárias, um par de 'espadas curtas' que fazem referencia as facas que são usadas no estilo que pratica a quase 25 anos. - '... A war hammer, a set of twin swords, and a sword and shield set, take shape in the sand...' - Mestre Leonardo Reis é um exímio praticante de sua arte, e uma das suas críticas mais comuns ao artista marcial moderno, é de que ao se atingir um determinado nível, o mesmo tende a deixar a troca de experiencias técnicas de lado para não se expor. Seria então o autor, capaz de expor seu conhecimento marcial através das palavras? - '... The beautiful female warrior reaches the twin swordsand grabs them...' - '... He turns right away and blood flows from Moon Hawk´s mouth, the short sword of his dragon brother impaled in his belly...'

Two generations above the author of the book, in the family tree of the style he represents, is Grand Master Leo Imamura[PHOTO]. According to him: '... The Kung Fu Master makes good choices, because they are made based on his person as a whole. It doesn't just refer to the action, but also to the artistic style performed...' .

Master Leonardo Reis challenges himself, by inserting among the legendary weapons, a pair of 'short swords' that make reference to the knives that are used in the style he has practiced for almost 25 years. - '... A war hammer, a set of twin swords, and a sword and shield set, take shape in the sand...' - Master Leonardo Reis is an expert practitioner of his art, and one of his most common criticisms to the modern martial artist, is that when he reaches a certain level, he tends to leave the exchange of technical experiences aside so as not to expose himself. Would the author then be able to expose his martial knowledge through words? - '... The beautiful female warrior reaches the twin swords and grabs them...' - '... He turns right away and blood flows from Moon Hawk´s mouth, the short sword of his dragon brother impaled in his belly. ..'

Dentro de uma construção de texto por vezes tão visceral, o autor e Mestre de Kung Fu, parece homenagear sem perceber as velhas ilustrações fantásticas de Frank Frazetta e Boris Vallejo ao descrever sem piedade dos leitores mais sensíveis uma das três personagens principais - '...While he contemplates Minara´s beauty. The long hair adorning her face and the fascinating blue eyes show the most enchanting smile he has ever seen. Her legs, strong like the rest of her body, move in a harmonious conterpoint to her delicate feminine curves as she heads towards the stage...' 

O livro também trata de relações. Observamos relações de irmandade muito fortes, nas quais o autor faz uso de elementos ritualísticos e simbólicos, para conectar o leitor com a seriedade do ato. Também percebemos relações de Mestre e Discípulo, as quais não posso citar para não entregar muito[risos]. Porém, é muito claro que o livro gira em torno da relação 'pai e filho' de diferentes maneiras. - Vemos filhos enterrando os pais, vemos filhos divididos entre a irmandade e a obrigação filial, vemos pais que não conseguem passar a importância de preservar as tradições para os filhos. Vemos também filhos apegados a situações traumáticas com o pai e que mesmo tendo seu próprio filho, não se desapegam disso. E vemos filhos matando pais em função de terem sido gerados por estupro. 

Within a text construction that is sometimes so visceral, the author and Kung Fu Master, seems to pay tribute without realizing the fantastic old illustrations of Frank Frazetta and Boris Vallejo when describing without mercy to the most sensitive readers one of the three main characters - '.. .While he contemplates Minara's beauty. The long hair adorning her face and the fascinating blue eyes show the most enchanting smile he has ever seen. Her legs, strong like the rest of her body, move in a harmonious containpoint to her delicate feminine curves as she heads towards the stage... '

The book is also about relationships. We observe very strong brotherhood relationships, in which the author makes use of ritualistic and symbolic elements to connect the reader with the seriousness of the act. We also perceive Master and Disciple relationships, which I can't name so as not to give too much away [laughs]. However, it is very clear that the book revolves around the 'father and son' relationship in different ways. - We see children burying their parents, we see children divided between brotherhood and filial obligation, we see parents who fail to pass on the importance of preserving traditions to their children. We also see children attached to traumatic situations with their father and who, even having their own child, do not let go of it. And we see children killing parents because they were generated by rape.

Relações afetivas por vezes perturbadoras como algumas das descritas acima, me fizeram lembrar da obra cinematográfica 'Mad Max 2- The Road Warrior[FOTO]'. Pois no segundo filme, George Miller deixa mais claro de que tipo de mundo estamos falando. E apesar de ser um grande fã desta antologia, eu não gostaria de viver no mundo de Mad Max. De fato, como leitor ávido de fantasia, é um exercício que faço as vezes: 'Eu estaria disposto a viver nesse mundo?'. - Meus livros de fantasia favoritos são 'Conan' e 'Witcher'. E eu não gostaria de viver em nenhum daqueles mundos.

Já em 'Storm Dragons', na primeira vez que a Night Eye aparece, é tudo muito genial. Vemos os personagens que o estão caçando numa conversa ao redor da fogueira, com um deles contando vantagem. O autor envolve você e o convida a sentar junto daquelas personagens, e o faz achar graça dos exageros daquele narra aventuras que nunca aconteceram. Isso tudo, para momentos depois descrever um verdadeiro massacre destas mesmas personagens. Confesso que foi uma quebra de expectativa, mas achei muito inteligente a construção da cena, para que pudéssemos saber sobre a índole e capacidade de Night Eye.

Affective relationships, sometimes disturbing, like some of the ones described above, reminded me of the cinematographic work 'Mad Max 2- The Road Warrior[PHOTO]'. For in the second film, George Miller makes it clearer what kind of world we are talking about. And despite being a huge fan of this anthology, I wouldn't want to live in the world of Mad Max. In fact, as an avid fantasy reader, it's an exercise I do sometimes: 'Would I be willing to live in this world?' - My favorite fantasy books are 'Conan' and 'Witcher'. And I wouldn't want to live in any of those worlds.

In 'Storm Dragons', the first time Night Eye appears, it's all very cool. We see the characters who are hunting him in conversation around the campfire, with one of them bragging. The author involves you and invites you to sit with those characters, and makes you laugh at the exaggerations of the one who narrates adventures that never happened. All this, for moments later to describe a real massacre of these same characters. I confess that it was a breach of expectation, but I thought the construction of the scene was very intelligent, so that we could know about the nature and capacity of Night Eye.

Quando falamos em cinema, também percebemos que tendemos a acompanhar o filme pelo ponto de vista de uma única personagem. Em casos mais elaborados como no filme 'Crash', temos diferentes perspectivas que nos fazem inclusive questionar nossas certezas anteriores. Porém, tendemos a nos identificar sempre com a personagem mais forte, com o principal, etc... E aos 38 anos de idade, sendo apenas oito anos mais velho do que Zairos, me perguntei se gostaria de ser ele. 

Sem entregar muito da história, os Storm Dragons são uma guilda de sacerdotes e guerreiros que precisam impedir que o mundo entre em guerra. Então, o Deus Dragão impos a lei de que um desses guerreiros deveria ser derrotado para que a guerra acontecesse. Ou tendo ele vencido, caberia a ele escolher paz ou guerra. Observamos então que um Storm Dragon nunca perde e eles sempre escolhem 'Paz'. 

Em determinado momento, na dúvida se a vitória vai acontecer, uma criança que é filha de um dos personagens principais. Tranquiliza a si  mesma ao lembrar-se de que : 'Um Storm Dragon nunca é derrotado'. - Nesse momento, interrompi a leitura por alguns minutos, e me imaginei sendo um Storm Dragon. Fiquei pensando na vida sob tamanha pressão, que esses guerreiros levavam. Desde a sua escolha como aprendiz, até o momento de sua última luta antes de se aposentar. Ele NUNCA poderia perder... Então, sendo eu mesmo um profissional de artes marciais, me coloquei depois na pele dos mentores que preparavam os novos Storm Dragons: 'E se uma das crianças desistisse? ... E se uma delas após os sete anos de treino dissesse : Vou precisar parar por um tempo? ' - Esses dois pensamentos conseguiram me fazer não querer ser um Storm Dragon e nem um de seus mentores. Pois tinha muito em jogo o tempo todo. 

When we talk about cinema, we also realize that we tend to follow the film from the point of view of a single character. In more elaborate cases like in the movie 'Crash', we have different perspectives that even make us question our previous certainties. However, we tend to always identify with the strongest character, the main character, etc... And at 38 years old, being only eight years older than Zairos, I asked myself if I would like to be him.

Without giving away too much of the story, the Storm Dragons are a guild of priests and warriors who need to stop the world from going to war. So, the Dragon God imposed the law that one of these warriors must be defeated in order for the war to take place. Or having won, it would be up to him to choose peace or war. We then observe that a Storm Dragon never loses and they always choose 'Peace'.

At one point, in doubt whether the victory will happen, a child who is the daughter of one of the main characters. She reassures herself by remembering that: 'A Storm Dragon is never defeated'. - At that moment, I stopped reading for a few minutes, and imagined myself being a Storm Dragon. I kept thinking about the life under such pressure these warriors led. From his choice as an apprentice, to the moment of his last fight before retiring. He could NEVER lose... So, being a martial arts professional myself, I later put myself in the shoes of the mentors who prepared the new Storm Dragons: 'What if one of the kids gave up? ... What if one of them after seven years of training said: I'm going to need to stop for a while? ' - These two thoughts managed to make me not want to be a Storm Dragon or one of its mentors. For there was a lot at stake all the time.

Parafraseando o título de um dos capítulos "The Beginning of the End", a ideia do autor parece ter sido comentar que a partir de uma lógica reversa, seria possível traçar um caminho de trás para frente de maneira extremamente coerente e até mesmo esconder várias surpresas positivas neles. Sendo assim, o desafio não seria encontrar o destino desejado (e assim os riscos de se perder pelo caminho são minimizados),mas sim encontrar uma jornada rica que nos leve não "ao", mas a "um" ponto de partida que faça sentido. 

 O autor já considerou em conversas comigo, que seguindo uma versão que muitos acreditam, o Ving Tsun Kung Fu[arte que ele pratica] teria sido criado a partir de seu nível final e que por isso é tão  coerente e eficaz. O autor começou a história pelo seu final, surpreendente e de triar o fôlego[por sinal], para construir uma história excepcionalmente bem amarrada e cheia  de surpresas.

Acredito que ler o livro de maneira atenta as escolhas feitas pelo autor, as diferentes naturezas de relações que ele escolhe explorar, a composição das cenas, as listas de elementos que ele elencou e utilizou para montar a história. Como ele descreve as lutas [Algo pelo qual Bernard Cornwell é tão elogiado]. E com qual maturidade ele engendra tudo isso, é onde reside a importância de um Mestre de Kung Fu se dispor a escrever um livro de fantasia e não de técnicas. 

Recomendo profundamente a leitura. 

Paraphrasing the title of one of the chapters "The Beginning of the End", the author's idea seems to have been to comment that from a reverse logic, it would be possible to trace a path backwards in an extremely coherent way and even hide several surprises positive in them. Therefore, the challenge would not be to find the desired destination (and thus the risks of getting lost along the way are minimized), but to find a rich journey that takes us not "to", but to "a" starting point that makes sense. .

 The author has already considered in conversations with me, that following a version that many believe, the Ving Tsun Kung Fu [art that he practices] would have been created from its final level and that is why it is so coherent and effective. The author started the story with its ending, surprising and breath-taking [by the way], to build a story exceptionally well tied and full of surprises.

I believe that reading the book attentively to the choices made by the author, the different natures of relationships he chooses to explore, the composition of the scenes, the lists of elements he cast and used to assemble the story. How he describes the struggles [Something Bernard Cornwell is so praised for]. And with what maturity he engenders all this, that's where the importance of a Kung Fu Master is willing to write a fantasy book and not techniques.

VING TSUN MASTER RELEASES FANTASY EPIC BOOK IN ENGLISH

 

Em Dezembro do ano passado, pude receber a tão esperada versão em ingles do livro Storm Dragons de autoria do Mestre Leonardo Reis[foto]. Jantamos em um restaurante na Barra da Tijuca, e dentre tantos assuntos, falamos sobre o livro que vai receber uma resenha na próxima Sexta nesta mesma página.

Por alguma razão misteriosa, temas relacionados a fantasia ou espada e feitiçaria, ficam melhores no idioma inglês a meu ver. Desde o famoso conto “By this axe I rule“ de autoria de Robert E. Howard, ou a música “Fairy Tale“ da banda Shaman... Observamos que independente da mídia, o idioma ingles parece se ajustar melhor... Por isso, “Storm Dragons“ causa um impacto inicial logo de cara pelo título. 

In December of last year, I was able to receive the long-awaited English version of the book Storm Dragons by Master Leonardo Reis[photo above]. We had dinner at a restaurant in west zone of Rio de Janeiro, and among so many topics, we talked about the book that will receive a review next Friday on this page.

For some mysterious reason, themes related to fantasy or sword and sorcery look best in the English language in my opinion. From the famous short story "By this axe I rule" by Robert E. Howard, or the song "Fairy Tale" by the band Shaman... We observe that, regardless of the media, the English language seems to fit better... , “Storm Dragons“ makes an initial impact right off the bat for the title.

“... Lightining and thunder intensify. A heavy storm begins, dropping an unsual reddish rain, as if, from the heavens, the Dragon God himself sheds tears of blood upon earth...“ - Com essas linhas, agora muito mais poderosas escritas em ingles, o Mestre Leonardo Reis pergunta aqueles que se interessarem pela leitura - “Are you ready for the storm?“. 

“... Lighting and thunder intensify. A heavy storm begins, dropping an unsual reddish rain, as if, from the heavens, the Dragon God himself sheds tears of blood upon earth...“ - With these lines, now much more powerful written in English, Master Leonardo Reis asks those interested in reading - “Are you ready for the storm?”.

Storm Dragons não é mais um livro de fantasia épica, ele é uma cine-novela que segundo o próprio autor, coloca o leitor imerso numa verdadeira experiência cinematográfica. Esse estilo único de escrita, rendeu ao Mestre Leonardo Reis inúmeros prêmios ao redor do mundo. De fato, Storm Dragons se tornou uma das obras mais premiadas desse gênero. Confesso que para mim, era sempre incrível  quando Mestre Leonardo aparecia como vencedor de mais uma premiação. É uma sensação curiosa, ter alguém tão próximo, que seja tão proeminente. 

Garanto que essa obra vai transportar você para um mundo sem paralelos... Sua leitura, sem dúvidas, vai ser marcante. 

Storm Dragons is no longer any epic fantasy book, it is a cinenovel that, according to the author himself, immerses the reader in a true cinematic experience. This unique style of writing earned Master Leonardo Reis numerous awards around the world. In fact, Storm Dragons has become one of the most awarded works of this genre. I confess that for me, it was always incredible when Master Leonardo appeared as the winner of yet another award. It's a curious feeling, having someone so close, who is so prominent.
