Official Visit of Patriarch Ip Man to Macau on behalf
For many years, I understood the "Official Visit" to simply mean receiving my Si Fu at the Mo Gun of my Kung Fu Family. For this reason, it was also difficult for me to understand why the "Official Visit", according to the Programme in its version under Moy Yat Ving Tsun Martial Intelligence, should be carried out with my Si Gung (Grandmaster Leo Imamura) rather than with my own Si Fu — and so on.
I remember clearly the moment I told myself that I would neither organise nor participate in any Official Visit until I truly understood what it was about. This culminated in what ended up being the last time Si Gung conducted a version of the "Official Visit" for the Moy Jo Lei Ou Family, around 2018.
We had a lunch scheduled at the airport. The Mo Gun had two doors that opened onto the same corridor. I was outside getting some air when a Kung Fu brother came out through the other door. He was looking for me and said that, due to an emergency, would I be able to take over the organisation of the lunch. It wasn’t his fault, but throughout that entire weekend, someone was always asking me to “cover” something. These are the kinds of situations that unsettle us — perhaps due to the accumulation of small things.
That same day, after the airport moment, my Si Fu asked me and two other Kung Fu brothers how the experience had been. I remember summarising it in a single word: “Terrible”.
It took five years to truly understand what the "Official Visit" is, according to the Programme. In it, it is the members of the Kung Fu Family themselves who create the appropriate ambience to make the Provision of Kung Fu Life possible.
Inspired by the personal process of Patriarch Moy Yat in promoting Kung Fu Life through activities organised within his own Kung Fu Family, this instrument establishes the annual visit of the Leadership of the Moy Yat Ving Tsun Safeguard Group to the respective Access Hub.
The Access Hub of Master Senior Felipe Soares’ Family is very organised and clean. In fact, every time we went upstairs after lunch or some activity, the smell was so good that at a certain moment I asked out loud: "Wow! It smells so good in here! What do you use to clean this place?", Michel then replied: "It’s just cleanliness, Si Hing!".
Master Felipe sits quietly observing, without making any sudden movements. With small gestures of his fingers or eyebrows, he signals to someone more attentive to refill the tea or take care of something. As it is a work fully supported by the Programme for so many years, you always see the same familiar faces there, willing to participate. Among them, Guilherme, Nakazato and Matheus. However, there were some small "gaps" happening from time to time, and I knew there must be some explanation for that.
So when we were taking GM Leo Imamura to the airport, I found a way to bring it up with Master Felipe. He shared his strategy of placing the more senior members in other types of more strategic or indirect roles, creating space for newer practitioners like dear Lenildo and Michel. That seemed very intelligent to me, because it is common for the more experienced practitioner to "jump" in to "fix" something — which, on the other hand, doesn’t allow the Family to mature.
I briefly remembered the first "pilot version" of the Official Visit that GM Leo Imamura conducted in 2023 for my Access Hub. At a certain moment, he hugged me and quietly said something like: "Let it happen... Don’t manipulate... Let it happen and monitor..." – I remember being deeply impressed by how he gave 120% of himself to each activity and each person, something I saw him doing in all the other Official Visits of 2024, which I attended to learn how to carry them out. He gives his life during every single minute of the Official Visit.
The members of my Kung Fu Family have great respect for Master Felipe’s conduct in every way, so as soon as it is announced that there will be an Official Visit, everyone is interested in being present. Practitioners such as Bruno Bahia, Bruno Leonardo, Ghabriel Beliago, Miss Aline, and Lucas Eustáquio were also present. Some asked me if I had any guidance to offer, and I simply said: “Enjoy it as much as possible.”
There is a strong ethic in the way Master Felipe treats visitors, and also in the way GM Leo Imamura leads. Sometimes, one of my students will say: “It’s because Si Fu said it once...” — You don’t even remember having said that, maybe it was years ago, but the person took it to heart. At those times, I shake my head negatively, blaming myself, but the ethic of the Safeguard Group members leaves no room for any kind of criticism of others’ work. Everyone intuitively understands that the commitment of all in the group is already enough to prepare better from that point on.
On the other hand, we value the progress of each individual. And I was very struck by the participation of Charles and Moisés. Back in the car on the way to the airport, I asked Master Felipe if he knew what had happened or at what moment Charles experienced such a positive change, just like Moisés, to have such a great change in attitude in only one year.
I already knew the answer, but he was kind enough to try to explain that it is a process. Perhaps you reading this don’t understand, but when on Sunday I arrived and Charles was there alone waiting for everyone, or when on Saturday Moisés arrived with attitude and organised all the places, this is also what we call a result in the realm of emotion. To me, that is the most important.
Besides my Kung Fu Family, the Kung Fu Family of Master Senior Monnerat was also present. Additionally, first-generation disciples of GM Leo Imamura attended both days, among them Master Diego Guadelupe (photo), who kindly translated for Miss Nan, and Master Senior Fabio Gomes and his wife Adriana Lima (in the background). Everyone was there for the pleasure of being in the presence of GM Leo Imamura, creating an atmosphere of great support for the work being carried out.
Knowing that everything we do is serious, even so, the atmosphere is never tense, nor are people anxious to make things appear perfect. All the pre-events that GM Leo Imamura is willing to take part in ensure that the schedule, the participants, the demands, and the expectations can be anticipated by him and therefore better handled. He manages to arrive at the venue treating each person individually; furthermore, the post-event preserves the transevent, since, except in very exceptional cases, certain points can be raised afterwards so that the practitioner’s participation is not compromised.
Internally, I still face a great struggle. When something happens, various ways of solving problems that don’t require a solution come to mind — simply because that’s not the nature of this instrument. Looking to the side, you might see Master Felipe with a gentle smile at the corner of his mouth, perhaps waiting for someone to realise something — always without affectation. On the other hand, monitoring is different from “doing nothing”.
Master Felipe accompanied his Master to the airport and only left once he was certain that the plane had taken off. The same happened on several other occasions during the event. Moreover, he also leaves the space completely open for visitors like me to ask questions, bring up a topic at the table, or anything of the sort. You don’t see him having any issue with Grandmaster Leo Imamura’s time being shared with others.
All the members of my Access hub left the event deeply moved. However, I’d like to end by highlighting the practitioner Bruno Bahia, who truly moved me with his feedback regarding his participation.
What I heard from Bruno Bahia last Saturday, when we finally met, reminded me of when GM Leo Imamura speaks about the importance of “the result” — “You can then see how the person’s life is going.” I understand what he means, but I believe that before reaching that point, there is an entire process that must take place for the Kung Fu Family to truly enter the Kung Fu Dimension. And every time a student shows that they are beginning to understand this, it is truly touching. I hope you, the reader, understand.
