Dois de meus alunos passaram para me buscar no Núcleo Méier antes do dia nascer. Ao chegarmos ao aeroporto, encontrei com um terceiro que já havia impresso o cartão de embarque. Subimos para o segundo piso para tomar um café, e logo depois meu Si Hing, o Mestre Leonardo Reis,apareceu. Na sequencia, outro irmão Kung Fu chamado Thiago Silva. 

Two of my students stopped by to pick me up at the Méier School before sunrise. When we arrived at the airport, I met a third party who had already printed the boarding pass. We went up to the second floor to have a coffee, and soon after, my Si Hing Leonardo Reis appeared and,after him, another Kung Fu brother called Thiago Silva.

Para nossa sorte, o Mestre Fabio Gomes e sua esposa[FOTO acima] estavam no mesmo voo, e por conta disso ficamos conversando no portão de embarque.

O voo até Brasília foi bem tranquilo, não visitava a capital do Brasil desde 2017. Naquela ocasião, meu Si Fu Julio Camacho estava presente junto de uma grande comitiva. Desta vez eu retornava não só sem a sua presença, mas com uma comitiva um tanto quanto heterogênea, pois contava com meus discípulos e irmãos Kung Fu, sendo um mais velho.

Lucky for us, Master Fabio Gomes and his wife [PHOTO above] were on the same flight, and because of that we were talking at the boarding gate.

The flight to Brasilia was very smooth, I had not visited the capital of Brazil since 2017. On that occasion, my Si Fu Julio Camacho was present with a large entourage. This time I returned not only without his presence, but with a somewhat heterogeneous entourage, as I had my disciples and Kung Fu brothers, one of whom was older.

Pegamos o carro que havíamos alugado, e percorremos as estradas vazias da capital do Brasil até o apartamento que havíamos reservado. Lá chegando, tivemos alguns problemas para nos alojar, mas nada que comprometesse nossa viagem. Este apartamento ficava em um conjunto habitacional, que eu não conseguia associar com nenhum bairro do Rio.... Então decidi que parecia um pouco uns conjuntos habitacionais da antiga União Soviética. Apesar disso o apartamento era muito bom. Quando andava pelo pátio, pensava nas músicas da banda de Minsk chamada  'Molchat Doma'. Conheci essa banda em 2021, e para minha surpresa, conversando com meu aluno José Carlos, ele estava pensando nas músicas da mesma banda enquanto caminhava por ali... Não é uma incrível coincidência?

We took the car we had rented and drove along the empty roads of the capital of Brazil to the apartment we had booked. Arriving there, we had some problems with accommodation, but nothing that would compromise our trip. This apartment was in a housing project, which I couldn't associate with any neighborhood from Rio.... So I decided it looked a bit like housing projects from the former Soviet Union. Despite that, the apartment was very good. When I walked around the courtyard, I thought about the songs of the band from Minsk called 'Molchat Doma'. I knew this band in 2021, and to my surprise, talking to my student José Carlos, he was thinking about the songs by the same band while walking there... Isn't this an incredible coincidence?

Depois de nos alojarmos, o meu Si Hing Leonardo coordenou uma prática na área externa do prédio e naquela mesma noite, jantamos em um restaurante chinês muito agradável.  

Meu Si Hing Leonardo tem uma interminável paixão pela prática, e todos puderam aproveitar de sua animação inabalável para falar sobre o Sistema Ving Tsun e principalmente praticar no nível do detalhe... Todos se inspiraram muito com sua disposição. Eu recebi uma noticia ruim de um cliente da minha empresa no Rio. E eu precisei administrar de alguma maneira os dois cenários...

After we settled in, my Si Hing Leonardo coordinated a practice outside the building and that same night, we had dinner at a very nice Chinese restaurant.

My Si Hing Leonardo has an endless passion for practice, and everyone could take advantage of his unshakable animation to talk about the Ving Tsun System and mainly practice in detail... Everyone was very inspired by his stamina. I received bad news from a client of my company in Rio. And I needed to somehow manage both scenarios...

Existia muita expectativa para o dia seguinte... E quando chegamos ao local[FOTO ACIMA] onde o Baai Si estava ocorrendo, fui reconhecendo muitas pessoas que não encontrava pessoalmente há muito tempo. A cada abraço e sorriso que recebia, sentia que o evento havia começado de fato ali. Músicas da Disney tocavam na loja vizinha, mas não atrapalhou o decorrer da Cerimonia. 

There was a lot of anticipation for the next day... And when we arrived at the place [PHOTO ABOVE] where the Baai Si was taking place, I recognized many people that I hadn't met in person for a long time. With every hug and smile I received, I felt that the event had actually started there. Disney music played in the neighboring store, but it did not interfere with the Ceremony.

Havíamos passado antes dali para pegar o Carlos Antunes no aeroporto, e com isso, nossa comitiva estava completa. 

Avistei dentre as pessoas, o Grão-Mestre William Moy e fui ao seu encontro para apertar sua mão. Eu sei falar ingles, mas também sou tímido e nesses momentos, parece que nunca aprendi o idioma. 

Ainda nesse evento do Baai Si, reencontrei o Mestre Diego Guadelupe que me presenteou com um Tong Jong que meu Si Fu havia dado para ele de presente anos atrás. Aquele presente me pegou de surpresa e fiquei bem feliz. Decidi então usá-lo mais tarde no evento principal...

We had stopped there earlier to pick up Carlos Antunes at the airport, and with that, our entourage was complete.

I saw among the people, the Grand Master William Moy and I went to meet him to shake his hand. I can speak English, but I'm also shy and in those moments, it seems that I never learned the language.

Still in this Baai Si event, I met Master Diego Guadelupe who presented me with a Tong Jong that my Si Fu had given him years ago. That gift took me by surprise and I was very happy. So I decided to use it later in the main event...

Agora a Cerimonia havia se encerrado e subimos alguns lances de escada para o misterioso evento chamado “Welcome Chi Sau”. O “Chi Sau” é a prática mais emblemática do Sistema Ving Tsun, e ela permite com que praticantes que nunca se conheceram, possam viver juntos uma experiência marcial com possibilidades diferentes de intensidade, imediatamente. No meu caso, eu fiquei sentado desde o início assistindo meus alunos fazerem. Aquela havia sido uma decisão difícil, mas entendi naquela manhã, que era melhor apenas observá-los ao invés de participar. Por isso, eu fui com uma roupa que desmotivaria as pessoas de me convidarem a fazer “Chi Sau”. Recebi apenas um convite, mas respondi que estava ali “só para olhar”. 

Now the Ceremony was over and we went up a few flights of stairs to the mysterious event called “Welcome Chi Sau”. “Chi Sau” is the most emblematic practice of the Ving Tsun System, and it allows practitioners who have never met to live together a martial experience with different possibilities of intensity, immediately. In my case, I sat from the beginning watching my students do it. That had been a difficult decision, but I understood that morning that it was better to just observe them rather than participate. Therefore, I went with an outfit that would discourage people from inviting me to do “Chi Sau”. I received only one invitation, but I replied that I was there “just to look”.

Enquanto estava sentado ali, conversei com alguns Si Suk como Marcio Tomo e Paul Liu. Também pude reencontrar uma pessoa que admiro muito que é o Si Suk Fabio Campi, bem como, velhos amigos como o Si Suk Giarola. 

Saindo de lá, fomos até o shopping. O restaurante que meu irmão Kung Fu Carvalheira havia indicado fechou. Fomos então ao Madero, e quebrando um pouco o protocolo, pedi uma caneca quase congelada de chopp. Fazia um pouco de calor, inclusive por conta da roupa que usava, e a cerveja desceu bem. Passei a última semana estudando a história da cerveja, e acho que por isso me veio essa vontade súbita em um momento de transição....

While I was sitting there, I talked with some Si Suk like Marcio Tomo and Paul Liu. I was also able to meet again someone I admire a lot, Si Suk Fabio Campi, as well as old friends like Si Suk Giarola.

Leaving there, we went to the mall. The restaurant that my Kung Fu brother Carvalheira had recommended closed. So we went to Madero, and breaking protocol a bit, I ordered an almost frozen mug of draft beer. The weather was a little bit hot, including because of the clothes I was wearing, and the beer went down well. I spent the last week studying the history of beer, and I think that's why this sudden urge came to me in a moment of transition....

No final da tarde chegamos mais cedo ao local do evento[FOTO ACIMA]. Eu vestia o Tong Jong que acabara de ganhar naquela manhã por debaixo do meu paletó favorito. Essa é uma combinação que uso desde 2006, e sempre achei que cai bem.  O local era muito bonito e aconchegante... Tudo havia sido preparado com muito esmero. Dava para notar isso em cada detalhe da ambiencia objetiva e subjetiva.

At the end of the afternoon we arrived early at the venue [PHOTO ABOVE]. I wore the Tong Jong I had just won that morning under my favorite jacket. This is a combination I've been using since 2006, and I've always found it to work well. The place was very beautiful and cozy... Everything had been prepared with great care. This could be noticed in every detail of the objective and subjective ambience.

Ao adentrar o salão do evento, Si Gung trabalhava em seu notebook[FOTO ACIMA] em uma das mesas. Ele estava muito concentrado. Si Baak Nataniel, Si Suk Felipe dentre outros cuidavam dos últimos ajustes. Para mim, foi muito especial ver o Si Gung bem mais cedo do que o horário marcado de início, trabalhando com afinco nos últimos detalhes de um evento com um certo nível de complexidade.  Não só para mim, mas também para meus alunos, a cena foi muito marcante. Quando terminou sua tarefa, Si Gung ainda levantou-se e coordenava o que parecia estar faltando... Meu aluno, que também é músico, Keith Markus disse - '...O Si Taai Gung me lembrava um maestro'...

Upon entering the event hall, Si Gung was working on his notebook [PHOTO ABOVE] at one of the tables. He was very focused. Si Baak Nataniel, Si Suk Felipe among others took care of the last adjustments. For me, it was very special to see Si Gung much earlier than the scheduled start time, working hard on the last details of an event with a certain level of complexity. Not only for me, but also for my students, the scene was very memorable. When he finished his task, Si Gung still got up and coordinated what seemed to be missing... My student, who is also a musician, Keith Markus said - '...Si Taai Gung reminded me of a orchestra maestro'...

Alguns minutos depois, eu e meus alunos conseguimos participar de maneira singela dos preparativos. Si Suk Thiago Quintela e sua esposa, bem como alguns de seus alunos também estavam presentes organizando tudo. E da Família Moy Na Tan, a esposa do Si Baak Natan, a Sra Patricia Hallack e discípulos como Gabriel, Shadi , dentre outros... Estavam bem determinados para que tudo acontecesse da melhor maneira possível.  Era um evento muito importante, e essas pessoas estavam a frente. [FOTO ACIMA]

A few minutes later, my students and I were able to participate in the preparations in a simple way. Si Suk Thiago Quintela and his wife, as well as some of his students were also present, organizing everything. And from the Moy Na Tan Family, Si Baak Natan's wife, Mrs. Patricia Hallack and disciples like Gabriel, Shadi, among others... They were very determined for everything to happen in the best possible way. It was a very important event, and these people were at the forefront.[photo above]

O evento começou e a mesa principal foi ocupada pelo Si Gung e alguns convidados de honra.... A Sra Maria Paula, o Dr Kazusei Akiyama, o Shihan Ricardo Leite e o Grão Mestre William Moy. 

Bom, eu estava bem ali ao lado da mesa principal junto do Si Suk Antonio Caldeira e podia ver todo o enorme salão que dispunha de ambientes distintos, com mesas delicadamente ornamentadas e completamente cheio de pessoas de diferentes lugares e épocas...  Quando voltei de meu devaneio, meu Ratatouille chegou. Eu havia pedido Ratatouille porque o nome era igual ao do filme, mas vi que tinha feito a escolha errada. Então comi algumas dezenas de cubinhos de mandioca e muita Coca-Cola[Risos]. 

Pude ali conhecer um pouco mais do trabalho do Si Suk Antonio Caldeira, e também saber dele, que é um leitor assíduo desse site. Não só ele, mas outros praticantes demonstraram muito amor nesse evento e também no evento organizado pela Família da Si Suk Ursula numa recente manhã de Domingo. Esses feedbacks, inegavelmente recompensam o trabalho.

The event started and the main table was occupied by Si Gung and some guests of honor.... Mrs Maria Paula, Dr Kazusei Akiyama ,Shihan Ricardo Leite and Grandmaster William Moy.

Well, I was right there next to the main table next to Si Suk Antonio Caldeira and I could see the entire huge hall that had different environments, with delicately decorated tables and completely full of people from different places and times... When I returned from my daydream, my Ratatouille has arrived. I had ordered Ratatouille because the name was the same as the movie, but I saw that I had made the wrong choice. So I ate a few dozen cubes of mandioca and a lot of Coke [Laughter].

There I was able to learn a little more about Si Suk Antonio Caldeira's work, and also learn about him, who is a regular reader of this site. Not only him, but other practitioners showed a lot of love at this event and also at the event organized by Si Suk Ursula's Family on a recent Sunday morning. These feedbacks undeniably reward the work.

Si Gung havia prometido um “evento divisor de águas”, e assim foi!Tivemos titulações, autorizações para fundação de novas Famílias Kung Fu... Mas o que me emocionou mesmo, foi o momento do reconhecimento público a discípulos que compuseram a história da Família Moy Yat Sang e do Si Gung, dando a diferença positiva para que ali estivéssemos... Havia presenciado o mesmo ato na última Cerimonia da Família Moy Lin Mah... Ali naquela noite, talvez por conta de todo o contexto, algumas histórias que contextualizavam o reconhecimento, de fato fizeram nossos olhos se encherem de água. E acreditei que daquela forma, o passado poderia ter sua página virada para focar no futuro...

Si Gung had promised a "ground breaking event", and so it was! We had titles ceremonies, authorizations for founding new Kung Fu Families... But what really moved me was the moment of public recognition of disciples who made up the history of Kung Fu. Moy Yat Sang Family and Si Gung, making a positive difference for us to be there... I had witnessed the same act at the last Ceremony of the Moy Lin Mah Family... There that night, perhaps due to the whole context, some stories that contextualized the recognition actually made our eyes water. And I believed that in that way, the past could have its page turned to focus on the future...

Sentado ali no auditório no dia seguinte, aguardava ansiosamente pelo evento “Perguntas que só a Maria Paula faria”. A Sra Maria Paula[Foto acima] é esposa do Si Gung, mas também marcou muito a minha infância sem saber. Alguns dos poucos momentos que passei com meu pai fazendo algo juntos, foi assistindo “Casseta e Planeta”[Um dos maiores programas humorísticos da história da TV brasileira]. Meu pai se divertia muito assistindo, e a Maria Paula era a apresentadora e também atuava no humorístico. Então sentado ali olhando para a Sra Maria Paula, me lembrei do meu pai e desses momentos que passamos juntos, vendo o programa dela. 

Sitting there in the auditorium the next day, I was looking forward to the event “Questions that only Maria Paula would ask”. Mrs Maria Paula [Photo above] is Si Gung's wife, but she also marked my childhood a lot without knowing it. Some of the few moments I spent with my father doing something together were watching “Casseta e Planeta” [One of the greatest comedy shows in the history of Brazilian TV]. My father had a lot of fun watching it, and Maria Paula was the presenter and also acted in this comedy show.  So sitting there looking at Mrs. Maria Paula, I remembered my father and those moments we spent together, watching her program.

Foi muito tocante para mim, assistir as falas não só da Srta Mel Imamura, filha do Si Gung, mas principalmente dos filhos da Maria Paula. O carinho e apreço com o qual eles se dirigiam ao Si Gung, era algo muito inspirador! Todos claramente, tem um coração muito bom. Dá pra sentir no ar... E aquele foi um bloco que me surpreendeu e me emocionou bastante...

It was very touching for me, watching the speeches not only of Miss Mel Imamura, Si Gung's daughter, but mainly of Maria Paula's children. The affection and appreciation with which they addressed Si Gung was something very inspiring! Everyone clearly has a very good heart. You can feel it in the air... And that was a block that surprised and moved me a lot...

Quando o Si Baak Gung William Moy subiu ao palco para participar, fiquei pensando em como deve ser, compartilhar uma história como a dele e do Si Gung... Ambos se conheceram ainda na década de '80...  “Um tira da pesada 2”[Beverlly Hills Cop 2] estava ainda estreando no cinema! Dá pra acreditar em quanto tempo faz?

Si Baak Gung William falou dos dias de altas aventuras, comentou sobre quando o Si Gung dormia no Mo Gun nas primeiras viagens e do quão frio fazia em Chinatown... E o que mais me chamou atenção na fala do Si Baak Gung, foi quando ele chamou o Si Gung de “brother”. Tinha muita verdade quando ele disse isso... Ele não estava falando só por falar... E fiquei pensando, em quantas pessoas nós podemos em nossas vidas, considerar um irmão. 

Termino agradecendo a organização do evento, pela possibilidade que nos deram, de viver algo tão incrível assim. 

When Si Baak Gung William Moy took the stage to participate, I was thinking about how it should be, sharing a story like his and Si Gung's... Both met each other in the '80s... "Berverlly Hills Cop 2” was still in theaters! Can you believe how long it's been?

Si Baak Gung William spoke of the days of high adventures, commented on when Si Gung slept in the Mo Gun on the first trips to NY and how cold it was in Chinatown... And what most caught my attention in Si Baak Gung's speech was when he called Si Gung "brother". There was a lot of truth when he said that... He wasn't just talking for the sake of talking... And I kept thinking, how many people in our lives can we consider a brother.

I end by thanking the organization of the event, for the opportunity they gave us, to experience something as incredible as this.
