Demorei a comprar a passagem para Brasilia, e até sentar em um ônibus que me levaria por 20 horas da cidade do Rio de Janeiro até a capital do Brasil, não estava acreditando que faria realmente isso. Dentro de mim, sabia que deveria ir, a razão, desconheço. É como se eu estivesse seguindo um roteiro de um episódio de uma série, e se fosse uma série, eu estava vestido a caráter: Com uma camisa de flanela quadriculada em preto e vermelho e um boné da Marinha que havia ganhado de um querido irmão Kung Fu e uma mochila a tiracolo, bem que eu podia me passar por algum personagem.  Pouco antes do ônibus sair, um irmão Kung Fu me perguntou porque eu estava fazendo aquilo, afinal seriam 20 horas de viagem, eu não sabia responder.  Porém, se por um lado os filósofos buscam um sentido nas coisas, como diz o Professor Fraçois Jullien, o Pensamento Clássico Chinês que parte de uma lógica diferente da dos filósofos do ocidente, se contrapõe a busca por sentido nas coisas, por uma capacidade de perceber as evidencias da circunstancia. Portanto, quando Si Gung teria dito: “...Acho que vai valer a pena você ir, pois será muito intimista...” – Eu não cogitei se era “verdade” ou não, como também poderia sugerir a filosofia. Mais uma vez citando o Professor François Jullien, estava mais focado na contraparte disso proposta pelo renomado sinólogo: A "congruência". Esta diz respeito a um congruente que convém perfeitamente a uma situação dada. Então, como evidencia, eu tinha toda a dedicação sem limites do Grão Mestre Leo Imamura , meu Si Gung, a cada tarefa que ele se dispõe a preparar e executar. Não houve uma oportunidade desde nossa aproximação mais intensa nos últimos anos que não tenha sido assim. E como elemento congruente, havia o Mestre Quintela...

I took a long time to buy the ticket to Brasília, and until I sat on the bus that would take me for 20 hours from Rio de Janeiro to the capital of Brazil, I couldn't believe I was actually doing this. Deep down, I knew I should go; the reason, I do not know. It was as if I were following a script for an episode of a TV series, and if it were a series, I was dressed for the part: wearing a black and red checked flannel shirt and a navy cap that I had received from a dear Kung Fu brother, along with an old bag. I could easily have passed for some character.

Just before the bus departed, a Kung Fu brother asked me why I was doing this, as it would be a 20-hour journey. I couldn't answer. However, while philosophers seek meaning in things, as Professor François Jullien states, classical Chinese thought, which operates on a different logic from that of Western philosophers, counters the quest for meaning by emphasising the ability to perceive the evidence of circumstances. Therefore, when Si Gung said, “I think it will be worth your while to go, as it will be very intimate...” – I did not consider whether it was “true” or not, as philosophy might suggest. Once again quoting Professor François Jullien, I was more focused on the counterpart proposed by the renowned sinologist: "congruence". This refers to something that perfectly suits a given situation.

So, as evidence, I had the unwavering dedication of Grandmaster Leo Imamura, my Si Gung, in every task he undertakes to prepare and execute. There has not been an opportunity, since our more intense connection in recent years, that has not been like this. And, as a congruent element, there was Master Quintela...

Fui recebido pelos discípulos do Mestre Quintela na rodoviária. Talvez tenha sido o primeiro caso de "jet lag" no mesmo fuso horário que se tem notícia. Eu caminhava com Nathalia e Paternostro, mas meu cérebro parecia não perceber que eu realmente estava ali. Naquele momento, lembrei do Si Suk André Cardoso. Eu costumava me comprometer com viagens da Família Kung Fu e sempre desmarcava em cima da hora. Numa dessas, deixei o Si Suk André na rodoviária esperando. Eu tinha uns 17 anos e gostava muito dele. Havia desistido de ir, mas, sem coragem de falar com ele, pedi à minha mãe que falasse no meu lugar. Aqueles eram os tempos de altas aventuras em 2001, e 23 anos depois acreditei que tinha pago essa dívida com essa viagem.

Fui recebido na casa do Mestre Quintela com um abraço e o sorriso dele e de sua esposa, a querida Sra. Gaby Quintela. Ambos me receberam com muito carinho, e eu imediatamente soube que toda a ambiência subjetiva criada pelo Mestre Quintela, sua esposa e sua família seria o elemento congruente que validaria as evidências de que, de fato, como o Si Gung teria dito: “Valeria muito a pena eu ter ido”. Que bom que segui para onde o coração apontava.

I was welcomed by the disciples of Master Quintela at the bus station. Perhaps it was the first case of "jet lag" in the same time zone on record. I was walking with Nathalia and Paternostro, but my brain seemed unable to register that I was really there. At that moment, I remembered Si Suk André Cardoso. I used to commit to trips with the Kung Fu Family and would always cancel at the last minute. On one occasion, I left Si Suk André waiting at the bus station. I was about 17 years old and liked him a lot. I had decided not to go, but without the courage to tell him, I asked my mother to speak on my behalf. Those were the high adventures days in 2001, and 23 years later, I believed I had paid that debt with this trip.

I was welcomed at Master Quintela's home with a hug and smiles from him and his wife, the dear Mrs Gaby Quintela. They both received me with great warmth, and I immediately knew that the entire subjective atmosphere created by Master Quintela, his wife, and his family would be the congruent element that validated the evidence that, in fact, as Si Gung would have said, “It would be well worth my while to have come.” How wonderful that I followed where my heart pointed.

Estaríamos ali reunidos durante todo o final de semana, em função de um instrumento chamado “Visita Oficial”. Ao longo dos anos, eu organizei várias vezes esse instrumento com as melhores intenções, mas acredito que nunca tenha de fato organizado a Visita enquanto instrumento do Programa. E, na busca por compreender melhor do que se trata, participei do mesmo evento quando ocorreu na Família do Mestre Felipe, e agora estava ali na mesma busca de compreensão com a Família do Mestre Quintela.

A “Visita Oficial” não se trata do Mestre da pessoa visitar sua Família Kung Fu. Ela promove uma oportunidade inovadora em que o próprio praticante, vinculado ao Pólo de Acesso, pode proporcionar “Vida Kung Fu” através das atividades propostas, para, como diz o Professor François Jullien em “A Propensão das Coisas”, criar oportunidades que ativem propensões que permitam a esse praticante refletir sobre a importância da Vida Kung Fu. Assim, o Si Gung não espera que sua recepção, bem como as atividades, sejam perfeitas. Ele ajuda os praticantes a entenderem a programação como um sistema de variação e se entrega completamente para viver qualquer situação que surgir da programação, sempre com toda a paciência do mundo. É realmente inspiradora a sua dedicação com seus descendentes.

We would be gathered there throughout the weekend for an initiative called the “Official Visit.” Over the years, I have organised this initiative several times with the best intentions, but I believe I have never truly organised the Visit as an instrument of the Programme. In my quest to better understand what it entails, I participated in the same event when it took place with Master Felipe’s Family, and now I was there in the same pursuit of understanding with Master Quintela’s Family.

The “Official Visit” is not about the Master of a person visiting his Kung Fu Family. It provides an innovative opportunity for the practitioner, linked to the Hub(School), to offer “Kung Fu Life” through the proposed activities. As Professor François Jullien states in “The Propensity of Things,” it creates opportunities to activate tendencies that allow the practitioner to reflect on the importance of Kung Fu Life. Thus, Si Gung does not expect his reception or the activities to be perfect. He helps practitioners understand the schedule as a system of variation and fully commits to experiencing whatever situations arise from the programme, always with boundless patience. His dedication to his descendants is truly inspiring.

Por falar nisso, também pude me beneficiar de um tema proposto pela Família Kung Fu do Mestre Quintela, que promoveu um estudo específico nas listas da Trilogia Fundamental. O que inicialmente parecia uma curiosidade rapidamente se tornou quase um seminário exclusivo para quem estava ali. Claramente, estávamos presenciando a propensão da programação sendo muito bem aproveitada, indo muito além do que havia sido proposto inicialmente. Fiquei realmente tocado por estar vivendo aquele momento.

Para buscar e levar o Si Gung até sua casa, geralmente formávamos uma dupla eu e Paternostro, o Daai Si Hing da Família do Mestre Quintela. Era um trajeto considerável na cidade de Brasília, que aprendi a gostar. A sensação de reconhecer os locais em Brasília é curiosa, pois já perdi a conta de quantas vezes estive lá nos últimos dois anos. Assim, pude ter momentos de proximidade com o Paternostro que foram bem especiais, nos quais falamos sobre episódios de nossas vidas que de alguma maneira se coincidiam. Quando Si Gung entrava no carro, aproveitava para perguntar detalhes sobre a celebração do seu aniversário no ano que vem.

Quando os dias chegavam ao fim, nos reuníamos todos para conversar. O Mestre Quintela tem um grande dom de agregar pessoas ao seu redor. Todos os membros da sua família dormiram lá naquele final de semana. O ambiente é muito harmonioso o tempo todo, e estávamos sempre rindo bastante com as histórias de vida que cada um compartilhava ao redor de uma pizza ou de uma garrafa de Jack Daniel’s. Fiquei feliz por ter essa oportunidade.

Speaking of which, I was also able to benefit from a theme proposed by the Kung Fu Family of Master Quintela, who organised a specific study on the lists of the Fundamental Trilogy. What initially seemed like a curiosity quickly turned into almost an exclusive seminar for those present. Clearly, we were witnessing the potential of the programme being fully realised, going well beyond what had initially been proposed. I was truly moved to be experiencing that moment.

To pick up and take Si Gung home, my usual partner was Paternostro, the Daai Si Hing of Master Quintela’s Family. It was quite a journey across the city of Brasília, which I have come to appreciate. The feeling of recognising the places in Brasília is quite curious, as I have lost count of how many times I have been there in the last two years. This allowed me to have special moments of closeness with Paternostro, during which we talked about episodes in our lives that somehow coincided. When Si Gung got into the car, I took the opportunity to ask him about the details of his birthday celebration next year.

As the days drew to a close, we all gathered to talk. Master Quintela has a remarkable gift for bringing people together around him. All the members of his family stayed there that weekend. The atmosphere was harmonious throughout, and we were always laughing heartily at the life stories each person shared over pizza or a bottle of Jack Daniel’s. I felt grateful to have that opportunity.

O tema que eu havia proposto era sobre a vida do Patriarca Leung Jaan. Escolhi esse tema porque, sendo ele da sexta geração, entendo que tenha sido o primeiro dos ancestrais da Linhagem Moy Yat a ter a missão de tornar o sistema Ving Tsun reconhecido publicamente. Era como se um entusiasta das artes marciais como ele tivesse recebido uma missão à qual não pediu. Como um praticante lida com isso? Como um Si Fu prepara um discípulo para uma missão dessas? Como um Si Fu, no caso Leung Jaan, deve ter lidado com o pioneirismo que sua jornada Kung Fu impôs a ele? Todas essas perguntas, e muitas outras, foram comentadas por Si Gung através de uma apresentação de slides e exibição de vídeos preparados meticulosamente para aquele momento(foto acima). Si Gung havia emendado duas semanas intensas em São Paulo, recebendo membros do Grande Clã de várias partes, incluindo eu mesmo. Ele havia chegado a Brasília, passado poucos minutos com sua esposa e, em seguida, se juntado à Visita Oficial do Mestre Quintela. E ali estava ele: na última atividade de domingo, uma entrega tão incrível quanto aquela.

Lembrei do meu irmão Kung Fu Fabiano Silva e de como ele fala da importância de terminar seus treinamentos para gestores em sua empresa com finais apoteóticos. Pois bem, ali estava um final apoteótico para as incríveis experiências que vivemos. E ao ver o Si Gung e sua apresentação, perguntei a mim mesmo: “Qual é o limite para buscar a excelência na sua entrega?”. 

The topic I proposed was about the life of Patriarch Leung Jaan. I chose this theme because, being from the sixth generation, I believe he was the first of the ancestors of the Moy Yat lineage to have the mission of making the Ving Tsun system publicly recognised. It was as if an enthusiast of martial arts like him had received a mission he did not ask for. How does a practitioner deal with this? How does a Si Fu prepare a disciple for such a mission? How must a Si Fu, in Leung Jaan’s case, have dealt with the pioneering spirit that his Kung Fu journey imposed upon him? All these questions, and many others, were discussed by Si Gung through a meticulously prepared slide presentation and video display for that moment (photo above). Si Gung had just completed two intense weeks in São Paulo, welcoming members of the Clan from various places, including myself. He had arrived in Brasília, spent only a few minutes with his wife, and then joined the Official Visit of Master Quintela's Family. And there he was: at the last activity on Sunday, delivering something as incredible as that.

I recalled my Kung Fu brother Fabiano Silva and how he talks about the importance of finishing his training sessions for managers in his company with spectacular finales. Well, there was a spectacular finale for the incredible experiences we had. As I watched Si Gung and his presentation, I asked myself: “What is the limit to seeking excellence in your delivery?”

My Si Fu visits my Kung Fu Family in Méier

 

Tivemos a honra de receber meu Si Fu Julio Camacho no Mo Gun da minha Família Kung Fu no bairro do Méier, Zona Norte do Rio de Janeiro. Mesmo com uma agenda cheia, precisando se dividir entre compromissos relacionados à sua função de líder da Família Moy Jo Lei Ou, bem como compromissos pessoais como pai, filho e marido, Si Fu encontrou espaço para nos oferecer muitas horas de seu tempo em um sábado. Essa também foi uma oportunidade de apresentar a nova sede da minha Família Kung Fu no bairro. Já estamos estabelecidos nela desde o final do ano passado, e esta foi a primeira oportunidade desde então para receber não só Si Fu, como também meu Si Hing Leonardo Reis e meu Si Dai Thiago Silva.

We had the honour of hosting my Si Fu Julio Camacho at the Mo Gun of my Kung Fu family in the Méier neighbourhood, North Zone of Rio de Janeiro. Despite his busy schedule, balancing commitments related to his role as leader of the Moy Jo Lei Ou family, as well as personal responsibilities as a father, son, and husband, Si Fu found time to spend many hours with us on a Saturday. This was also an opportunity to introduce the new headquarters of my Kung Fu family in the neighbourhood. We have been established there since the end of last year, and this was the first opportunity since then to host not only Si Fu but also my Si Hing Leonardo Reis and my Si Dai Thiago Silva.

O garotinho de boné azul na foto acima é meu discípulo Rodrigo Caputo, que hoje tem 25 anos. Na foto, ele participa da "Primeira Visita Oficial" do Si Fu à então "Unidade Méier" em 2008. Naquela época, vivíamos altos momentos de aventura, funcionando dentro de uma escola de dança, e no final da tarde e à noite, utilizávamos uma cozinha desativada para nossas atividades. Sabe, talvez um dos aspectos que mais aprecio em ser profissional de Ving Tsun é a passagem do tempo. Rodrigo, na foto com apenas nove anos, foi quem junto comigo, buscou e trouxe Si Fu de volta para sua casa nesta visita dirigindo, dezesseis anos depois. Você consegue perceber o quão especial isso é? Junto a nós estava meu Si Hing Leonardo, a quem convidei formalmente para estar conosco nesta visita. Ele aceitou prontamente o convite, e juntos fomos encontrar Si Fu em sua casa naquela manhã. Si Fu apareceu todo de preto; o Daai Si Hing fez uma brincadeira com ele por causa disso, e Si Fu sorriu antes de entrar no carro.

The little boy in the blue cap in the photo above is my disciple Rodrigo Caputo, who is now 25 years old. In the photo, he is participating in the "First Official Visit" of Si Fu to the then "MYVT Méier Studio" in 2008. Those were times of high adventure, as we operated within a dance school, and in the late afternoon and evening, we only had access to a deactivated kitchen to practice. You know, one of the aspects I most appreciate about being a Ving Tsun professional is the passage of time. Rodrigo, in the photo at just nine years old, was the one who fetched and brought Si Fu back to his home for this visit, sixteen years later driving a car. Can you see how special that is? With us was my Si Hing Leonardo, whom I formally invited to join us for this visit. He promptly accepted the invitation, and together we met Si Fu at his home that morning. Si Fu arrived dressed entirely in black; Daai Si Hing made a joke about this, and Si Fu smiled before getting into the car.

Quando era adolescente, eu ficava encantado com a quantidade de certificados que ficavam atrás da mesa do Si Fu em seu escritório no antigo Núcleo Jacarepaguá. Sempre quis ter uma parede como aquela. No entanto, foi apenas neste Mo Gun, com dimensões menores e com novas certificações de 2015 em diante, que, ao entrar ali com Si Fu, percebi que havia conseguido ter uma parede como aquela. Enquanto Si Fu observava a parede, atento a cada detalhe e a cada item pendurado, eu estava um tanto emocionado. Os certificados em si não eram o ponto principal, mas sim a configuração da parede. Em segundos, minha mente traçou uma linha entre a parede que via atrás do Si Fu quando era um moleque de 16 anos e a parede do meu Mo Gun que agora ele estava vendo. Lembrei-me de momentos da jornada até ali que me tocaram muito. Não sei quanto tempo ficamos naquela sala, mas para mim, pareceu uma vida inteira, com tantas lembranças.

As a teenager, I was fascinated by the number of certificates displayed behind Si Fu's desk in his office at one of his former schools in West Zone of our city . I always wanted a wall like that. However, it was only in this Mo Gun, with its smaller dimensions and new certifications from 2015 onwards, that I realised, upon entering with Si Fu, that I had managed to have a wall like that. As Si Fu examined the wall, paying attention to every detail and every item hanging, I was quite emotional. The certificates themselves were not the main point, but rather the arrangement of the wall. In seconds, my mind drew a line between the wall I saw behind Si Fu when I was a 16-year-old and the wall of my Mo Gun that he was now viewing. I recalled moments from the journey that had deeply touched me. I don't know how long we spent in that room, but to me, it felt like a lifetime, filled with so many memories.

Essa visita teve muitos momentos marcantes, e um deles, sem dúvida, foi o comprometimento do Si Fu em respeitar o que o grupo havia solicitado, do início ao final do tempo programado. Ele praticou com cada um dos meus discípulos, sempre com sua capacidade ímpar de interação, o que proporcionou um ambiente rico não só para o compartilhamento e aprendizagem, mas também muito agradável.

This visit had many memorable moments, and one of them, undoubtedly, was Si Fu’s commitment to respecting what the group had requested from the beginning to the end of the scheduled time. He practised with each of my students, always with his unique ability to interact, which created an environment rich not only for sharing and learning but also for being very enjoyable.

Quando Si Fu visitou o trabalho que eu empreendia dezesseis anos atrás (foto acima), posso compartilhar que lembro vagamente de um dos meus sentimentos recorrentes: "...A qualquer momento, tudo pode acabar..." . Si Fu dizia muitas coisas para mim naqueles tempos para me ajudar a melhorar minha autoconfiança, e eu guardei com afinco. Uma dessas coisas era que devíamos ter como assinatura sermos os primeiros a chegar e os últimos a sair de qualquer evento. Ele teria dito: "...Thiago, o praticante precisa olhar ao redor e encontrar você no recinto. Para alguém que está começando, isso é muito importante..."-  Lembro bem de ter comentado com ele que, quando estive em uma palestra do Si Gung no Hotel Florida em 2001, me tranquilizou encontrar o Si Fu no meio da multidão sentado lá na frente. Ele acenou com a cabeça e sorriu. Para um jovem tímido de apenas dezesseis anos, aquilo significou muito. Outro ponto importante que lembro de ter conversado com ele nos primeiros dias foi: "...Você precisa se preparar para receber cada pessoa. O praticante que chega às 21h não tem culpa de você ter começado a dar aula às 14h. Ele merece 100% do que você tiver..." - E ali em 2008, lembro bem que sempre via Si Fu dando 100% desde que comecei em 1999. Por isso levei a sério essa orientação.

When Si Fu visited the work I was involved in sixteen years ago (see photo above), I can vaguely recall one of my recurring feelings: "...At any moment, everything could come to an end..." Si Fu used to say many things to me at that time to help build my self-confidence, and I took them to heart. One of the things he said was that we should make it our signature to be the first to arrive and the last to leave any event. He might have said: "...Thiago, the practitioner needs to look around and see you in the room. For someone who is just starting, this is very important..." I remember telling him that when I attended a lecture by Si Gung at the Hotel Florida in 2001, it reassured me to see Si Fu amidst the crowd sitting right at the front. He nodded and smiled. For a shy sixteen-year-old, that meant a lot. Another important point I remember discussing with him in those early days was: "...You need to be prepared to give each person your full attention. The practitioner who arrives at 9 p.m. is not to blame for you starting your class at 2 p.m. He deserves 100% of whatever you have..." And back in 2008, I clearly saw Si Fu giving 100% ever since I started in 1999. That's why I took this advice seriously.

Então, quase duas décadas depois, foi muito tocante ver Si Fu entregar 100% durante todo o tempo, desde o café da manhã até sua despedida, não para meus irmãos Kung Fu como em 2008, mas agora para meus discípulos (foto acima). Hoje, não tenho mais medo de "que tudo se acabe a qualquer momento". Realmente enraizei aquelas duas orientações e muitas outras recebidas do Si Fu ao longo das décadas, e tenho a confiança de que, mesmo que o praticante se afaste da prática, até não sobrar mais nenhum, ele nunca poderá dizer que faltou dedicação e entrega da minha parte, seja em qual circunstância for.

So, almost two decades later, it was very touching to see Si Fu give 100% throughout the entire time, from breakfast until his departure—not for my Kung Fu brothers as in 2008, but now for my students (see photo above). Today, I no longer fear "that everything might come to an end at any moment." I have truly internalised those two pieces of advice and many others received from Si Fu over the decades, and I am confident that, even if practitioners were to leave the practice, leaving none behind, they would never be able to say that there was a lack of dedication and commitment on my part, regardless of the circumstances.

Meus discípulos também puderam conversar com Si Fu sobre dúvidas acumuladas nos últimos dois anos. Si Fu respondeu uma a uma, pontuou muitas questões e, entre outras coisas, falou sobre os novos Si Fu da Família Moy Jo Lei Ou, mencionando que ele entregaria o "Jiu Paai" como símbolo de autorização para que iniciassem suas Famílias Kung Fu. Si Fu usou meu querido irmão Kung Fu Vladimir Anchieta como exemplo para afirmar que apoia cada um desses líderes a realizar o trabalho à sua maneira. Para mim, foi muito importante essa fala para meus discípulos, pois minha escolha não foi fazer um trabalho próprio, mas buscar orientação do Si Gung para realizar meu trabalho sob todas as diretrizes da linhagem representada por ele. Com a anuência do Si Fu, me tornei parte do Moy Yat Ving Tsun Safeguard Group, e assim, Si Fu deixou muito claro para todos que não havia problema algum em eu não ser parte do Instituto Julio Camacho. Para mim, aquela fala chegou como aquele mesmo aceno de cabeça seguido de um sorriso que recebi na palestra em 2001 no Hotel Florida.

No final do dia, agradeci ao Si Fu pela sinceridade em cada minuto de seu contato comigo e com meus discípulos.

My students were also able to discuss questions they had accumulated over the past two years with Si Fu. Si Fu answered each one, addressed many issues, and, among other things, spoke about the new Si Fu of the Moy Jo Lei Ou family, mentioning that he would hand over the "Jiu Paai" as a symbol of authorisation for them to establish their own Kung Fu families. Si Fu used my dear Kung Fu brother Vladimir Anchieta as an example to affirm that he supports each of these leaders to carry out their work as they see fit. For me, this was very important for my students, as my choice was not to establish my own work but to seek guidance from Si Gung to carry out my work under all the guidelines of the lineage represented by him. With Si Fu's approval, I became part of the Moy Yat Ving Tsun Safeguard Group, and Si Fu also made it very clear to everyone that there was no issue with me not being part of the Julio Camacho Institute. For me, that statement felt like the same nod and smile I received during the lecture in 2001 at the Hotel Florida.

At the end of the day, I thanked Si Fu for his sincerity in every minute of his interaction with me and my students.

KUNG FU LIFE WITH MASTER FABIO GOMES

 

"Faaala, Thiagooo! Booom diaaa!" — Geralmente é assim que o Mestre Fabio Gomes atende os telefonemas que faço para ele, mesmo quando são muito cedo. Quando ligo, muitas vezes estou com algum assunto na cabeça para tratar com ele, e minha voz tende a ficar séria, mas sua energia incrível já me faz começar a rir imediatamente — "Tem que vibrar!" — Diz ele gargalhando. Por isso, ter um contato mais próximo com o Mestre Fabio Gomes tem sido uma fonte de grande felicidade e inspiração. Desta forma, fiz de tudo para organizar uma de nossas reuniões de modo que meus discípulos Daniel (foto acima à direita) e Rodrigo (foto acima à esquerda) pudessem estar com ele. Sabia que seria uma conversa especial e inspiradora, e não estava errado.

Rodrigo reside hoje na cidade de Blumenau ao sul do país e, assim como eu quando vou passar alguns dias com Si Gung em São Paulo, ele fez o mesmo no Rio. Nessas minhas visitas a São Paulo, percebo o quanto o Si Gung, Grão Mestre Leo Imamura, permite que participemos do seu dia a dia, mas sempre tudo dentro da Dimensão Kung Fu. Desta maneira, você convive com o Si Gung e ele abre aulas, reuniões, momentos familiares, tudo o que for possível para você imergir em seu dia a dia. E tudo se torna muito natural. "Você pode ficar com meus pais enquanto pego o carro?" — perguntou Si Gung certa vez. Com isso, quis proporcionar o mesmo para Rodrigo, Daniel e quem mais quisesse estar conosco nesses dias de altas aventuras.

"Heeey, Thiagooo! Gooood morning!" — This is usually how Master Fabio Gomes answers the phone when I call him, even if it’s very early. When I call, I often have something on my mind to discuss with him, and my voice tends to sound serious, but his incredible energy immediately makes me start laughing — "You’ve got to vibrate!" — he says, laughing heartily. Therefore, having closer contact with Master Fabio Gomes has been a great source of happiness and inspiration. For this reason, I did everything I could to organise one of our meetings so that my disciples Daniel (photo above right) and Rodrigo (photo above left) could be with him. I knew it would be a special and inspiring conversation, and I was not wrong.

Rodrigo now lives in Blumenau in the south of the country, and just as I do when I spend a few days with Si Gung in São Paulo, he did the same in Rio. During my visits to São Paulo, I notice how much Si Gung, Grandmaster Leo Imamura, allows me to participate in his daily life, but always within the Kung Fu Dimension. This way, you live with Si Gung and he opens up his classes, meetings, family moments, everything possible for you to immerse yourself in his day-to-day life. And everything becomes very natural. "Can you stay with my parents while I go get the car?" — Si Gung once asked. With this, he wanted to provide the same experience for Rodrigo, Daniel, and anyone else who wanted to be with us during these days of high adventure.

Mestre Fabio Gomes pôde compartilhar com meus discípulos, de maneira muito emocionante, seu momento de vida após 25 anos de muita dedicação, acreditando em seu projeto de utilização do Sistema Ving Tsun no trabalho com Forças de Operações Especiais, além de empresas que atuam em "safety and security". Eu queria que meus discípulos pudessem ouvir diretamente dele como tem sido a experiência de lidar com todos os resultados positivos após um nível impressionante de perseverança por mais de duas décadas — "Kung Fu também é resultado, não pode ser só processo" — teria dito Si Gung certa vez. E o Mestre Fabio Gomes tem demonstrado todos esses resultados, até que não resistiu e fez uma brincadeira — "Bom, mas vamos falar da Tailândia"(Projeto)— abriu o celular — "Você já veio até de Van Damme com essa camiseta" — disse ele sério e depois começou a gargalhar (risos).

Mais tarde, apareceu o querido Comandos Marcelo Alves. Infelizmente, não registramos sua presença, mas, apesar de ter sido uma passagem rápida, já que ele estava ocupado em outra reunião, foi bom revê-lo.

Master Fabio Gomes was able to share with my disciples, in a very moving way, his life experience after 25 years of dedication, believing in his project of applying the Ving Tsun System in work with Special Operations Forces, as well as companies involved in "safety and security". I wanted my disciples to hear directly from him about the experience of dealing with all the positive results after an impressive level of perseverance for over two decades — "Kung Fu is also about results; it can’t be just about the process" — Si Gung once said. And Master Fabio Gomes has demonstrated all these results, to the point where he couldn’t resist making a joke — "Well, let’s talk about Thailand"(a project) — he opened his phone — "You even came dressed like Van Damme in that tank top" — he said seriously before bursting into laughter (laughs).

Later, the dear Comandos Marcelo Alves showed up. Unfortunately, we didn’t capture his presence on camera, but despite it being a brief visit, as he was busy with another meeting, it was good to see him again.

Mestre Fabio Gomes sempre me impressiona com suas apresentações e seriedade no trabalho, já que a pessoa sempre divertida e com risada fácil dá lugar a alguém com muita precisão em cada fala e olhar sério. Sua participação mais recente na instrução do Sistema Ving Tsun para a formação de novos COMANDOS e Forças Especiais, com a ajuda do COMANDOS Marcelo Alves, teve um nível de entrega muito alto de sua parte, como a sua esposa, a Sra. Adriana, compartilhou comigo em alguma ocasião que não me recordo.

Mestre Fabio faz parte da "Moy Yat Ving Tsun Safeguard Group" desde junho de 2024, a convite do Grão-Mestre Leo Imamura. Talvez você possa se perguntar: "Mas o que tem a ver o trabalho do Mestre Fabio com a salvaguarda do Sistema?". O que tenho acompanhado nos últimos dois anos é um discípulo que consulta seu Si Fu a cada passo dado, não apenas para se informar sobre a melhor abordagem, mas também para tirar dúvidas honestas. Inclusive, quando o "Safeguard Group" foi apresentado, ele foi um dos mais interessados em saber do que se tratava e como se inserir. Por isso, é difícil ver o Mestre Fabio dar um passo em seus projetos utilizando o Sistema Ving Tsun sem consultar o Si Gung. Então, acima de qualquer coisa, a atitude do Si Suk Fabio é admirável, e meus discípulos puderam, naquela sexta-feira, ouvir diretamente dele sobre sua ética ao consultar o Si Gung antes de qualquer uso relacionado ao Sistema Ving Tsun da Linhagem Moy Yat. Afinal, entendendo o conceito de "Pseudo-parentesco" [拟亲属] e que, nesse "Pseudo-parentesco" [拟亲属], temos uma responsabilidade com a Linhagem, meus discípulos, que vêm tendo um contato mais intenso com Si Gung a respeito disso, compreenderam a ética do Mestre Fabio.

Master Fabio Gomes always impresses me with his presentations and work ethics, as the usually cheerful and easy-going person gives way to someone with great precision in every word and serious look. His most recent involvement in teaching the Ving Tsun System for the formation of new COMMANDOS and Special Forces, with the help of COMANDOS Marcelo Alves, demonstrated a very high level of commitment on his part, as his wife, Mrs. Adriana, shared with me on some occasion I cannot recall.

Master Fabio has been a part of the "Moy Yat Ving Tsun Safeguard Group" since June 2024, at the invitation of Grandmaster Leo Imamura. You might be wondering: "What does Master Fabio's work have to do with the safeguarding of the System?" What I have observed over the past two years is a disciple who consults his Si Fu at every step, not only to get advice on the best approach but also to ask honest questions. In fact, when the "Safeguard Group" was introduced, he was one of the most interested in understanding what it involved and how to get involved. Therefore, it is rare to see Master Fabio take a step in his projects using the Ving Tsun System without consulting Si Gung. Thus, above all, Si Suk Fabio's attitude is admirable, and my disciples were able, on that Friday, to hear directly from him about his ethics in consulting Si Gung before any use related to the Ving Tsun System of the Moy Yat Lineage. After all, understanding the concept of "Pseudo-kinship" [拟亲属] and that in this "Pseudo-kinship" [拟亲属] we have a responsibility to the Lineage, my disciples, who have been having more intensive contact with Si Gung on this matter, understood Master Fabio's ethics.

A tarde terminou com a presença sempre especial da esposa do Mestre Fabio Gomes, a Sra. Adriana Lima, que elogiou meu novo corte de cabelo, que, como escrevi em alguns artigos passados, havia sido uma sugestão do Si Gung em uma das viagens recentes para São Paulo. A Sra. Adriana estava realmente tocada e compartilhou comigo algumas palavras muito especiais. Teria dito ela: "...Thiago, o visual da gente diz muito a nosso respeito. Você é um excelente mestre, dá ótimos exemplos a seus discípulos e a toda a família Kung Fu. Então, o seu visual importa muito. Se você está no shopping distraído, a outra pessoa pode não estar, e te reconhecerá e associará você ao que vê e não ao que é..."

Todos esses momentos especiais naquela tarde com a Sra. Adriana, com o COMANDOS Marcelo Alves e com o Mestre Fabio Gomes puderam ser compartilhados com meus discípulos. Eles apenas estavam ali vivendo tudo aquilo comigo. E torci para que tivessem uma experiência tão significativa quanto as que eu tenho em São Paulo.

The afternoon ended with the always special presence of Master Fabio Gomes's wife, Mrs. Adriana Lima, who complimented my new haircut. As I mentioned in some previous articles, it had been a suggestion from Si Gung during one of the recent trips to São Paulo. Mrs. Adriana was genuinely moved and shared some very special words with me. She would have said:

"...Thiago, our appearance says a lot about us. You are an excellent master, setting great examples for your disciples and for the entire Kung Fu family. Therefore, your appearance matters a lot. If you are at the shopping mall distracted, the other person might not be, and they will recognise you and associate you with what they see rather than who you are..."

All these special moments that afternoon with Mrs. Adriana, with COMANDOS Marcelo Alves, and with Master Fabio Gomes were shared with my disciples. They were simply there, experiencing it all with me. And I hoped that they had an experience as meaningful as the ones I have in São Paulo.

The Day I Met Grandmaster Li Wing Kay: A Major Event in São Gonçalo, Rio de Janeiro

 

Em um domingo com uma manhã fria e céu acinzentado, do jeito que eu gosto, dirigi-me ao Méier para encontrar meus dois discípulos: os irmãos Lucas e Daniel Eustáquio. Por alguma razão misteriosa, eu estava passando muito mal naquela manhã e não sentia que iria me recuperar. Meu avô costumava dizer que, em momentos assim, você pode beber uma Coca-Cola que melhora, então você podia me ver sentado ali na padaria às 6h30 da manhã com ambos, ainda me decidindo se teria condições de ir ou não. Eu havia recebido o convite para sentar à mesa de honra do evento, mas pensei que, perto dos Mestres e Grão-Mestres presentes, um "garoto" (no mundo do Kung Fu) como eu, estar ou não presente não faria tanta diferença.—"... Si fu, vamos indo ali comprar 1 kg de alimento e pedir o Uber?" — convidou Lucas, referindo-se ao alimento não perecível que levamos para doação promovida pelo evento. Pedi ao Lucas um pouco mais de tempo. Lembrei então do Si Gung quando ele diz que representamos mais do que nós mesmos, representamos um estilo, e logo em seguida me veio à mente uma das minhas frases favoritas de 2024, dita pelo Grão-Mestre William Moy: "Ving Tsun guys, never give up" ("Os caras do Ving Tsun nunca desistem")

Ao chegar ao local do evento, que foi cedido pela Marinha do Brasil graças ao Mestre Serpio Silva, poucos minutos depois de caminhar, encontrei-o. Mestre Serpio, sempre muito gentil, me recebeu com muito carinho, agradecendo por eu ter ido. Naquele momento, percebi que já não estava mais passando mal. Sabe, dizem que na "Dimensão Kung Fu" não existe mágica, mas como explicar algo assim? Apertamos as mãos, e ele sugeriu que eu fosse tomar café com meus discípulos até que o Grão-Mestre Li chegasse.

On a Sunday with a cold morning and a grey sky, just the way I like it, I made my way to Méier to meet my two disciples: the brothers Lucas and Daniel Eustáquio. For some mysterious reason, I was feeling quite ill that morning and didn’t feel like I would recover. My grandfather used to say that in such moments, drinking a Coca-Cola can help, so you could see me sitting there in the bakery at 6:30 am with them, still deciding whether I would be able to go or not. I had received an invitation to sit at the head table of the event, but I thought that, given the Masters and Grandmasters present, a “youngster” (in the world of Kung Fu) like me being there or not would not make much of a difference. - “Si fu, shall we go buy 1 kg of food and call an Uber?” - Lucas suggested, referring to the non-perishable food we were donating for the event. I asked Lucas for a bit more time. I then remembered Si Gung saying that we represent more than just ourselves; we represent a style, and shortly after, one of my favourite quotes from 2024 came to mind, spoken by Grandmaster William Moy: “Ving Tsun guys, never give up.”

Upon arriving at the event venue, which had been provided by the Brazilian Navy thanks to Master Serpio Silva, I found him just a few minutes after arriving. Master Serpio, always very kind, welcomed me warmly, thanking me for coming. At that moment, I realised I was no longer feeling ill. You know, they say there’s no magic in the "Kung Fu Dimension," but how do you explain something like that? We shook hands, and he suggested I go for a coffee with my disciples until Grandmaster Li arrived.

Sentamos em uma convidativa lanchonete, de onde podíamos ver os artistas marciais chegando de todas as partes. Alguns estavam sentados ali conosco. Eu estava realmente muito feliz naquele momento. Estava feliz porque o primeiro campeonato de artes marciais chinesas que assisti foi quando eu tinha 20 anos, em 2004. Vinte anos depois, eu estava sentado ali com dois discípulos queridos, que eu sabia que estavam curtindo o momento tanto quanto eu naquela manhã de sábado de 2004. Afinal, todo o clima e a ambientação promovidos pela excelente organização do Mestre Serpio, do Jaime Ma e de toda a equipe proporcionavam uma manhã potencialmente muito especial. Ao menos para mim, já estava sendo, ao poder compartilhar com os dois discípulos aquele momento.

We sat in a welcoming café, from where we could see martial artists arriving from all over. Some were sitting there with us. I was truly very happy at that moment. I was happy because the first Chinese martial arts tournament I attended was when I was 20 years old, in 2004. Twenty years later, I was sitting there with two beloved disciples, who I knew were enjoying the moment as much as I was on that Saturday morning in 2004. After all, the atmosphere and ambiance created by the excellent organisation of Master Serpio, Jaime Ma, and the entire team made for a potentially very special morning. At least for me, it was already turning out to be, being able to share that moment with my two disciples..

Quando o Grão-Mestre Li apareceu com o Grão-Mestre Barbosa (foto acima), foi um momento bastante emocionante. Na minha adolescência, não foram poucas as matérias em revistas que citavam ele e suas contribuições ao círculo marcial chinês no Brasil. O Grão-Mestre Li parecia ter saído de uma revista e tomado vida bem ali na minha frente. O fato de ele estar ali conversando comigo também foi muito especial; a criança interior apaixonada por artes marciais começou a querer tomar o controle (risos), pois era, de alguma forma, um ciclo se fechando: o adolescente com o sonho das artes marciais conhecendo um GM que via nas revistas e sendo acolhido, graças às portas abertas por seu Si Gung Leo Imamura e seu Si Fu Julio Camacho, estava ali agora. Sei que para quem está lendo talvez não faça muito sentido, mas singelos momentos como esse valem uma vida.

When Grandmaster Li Wing Key appeared with Grandmaster Barbosa (see photo above), it was quite an emotional moment. In my teenage years, there were numerous magazine articles citing him and his contributions to the Chinese martial arts community in Brazil. Grandmaster Li seemed to have stepped out of a magazine and come to life right in front of me. The fact that he was there speaking with me was also very special; my inner child, passionate about martial arts, began to take over (laughs), as it felt like a cycle was coming full circle: the teenager with a dream of martial arts meeting a GM he had seen in magazines and being welcomed, thanks to the doors opened by his Si Gung Leo Imamura and his Si Fu Julio Camacho, was now there. I know that for those reading this, it might not make much sense, but such simple moments are worth a lifetime.

Entrei no recinto sob uma salva de palmas direcionadas a todos os Mestres, Grão-Mestres e autoridades presentes. Andamos em fila até uma mesa enorme com flores e o nome de cada um de nós. Lá estava meu nome ao lado do filho da minha querida professora Lily. - "Nós representamos um estilo"- lembrei das palavras do Si Gung. Talvez por estar tão tocado com todo o carinho que recebi de cada rosto conhecido que encontrava de diferentes estilos, lembrei de muita gente e me senti muito grato. Obviamente, lembrei da minha professora de chinês, a Sra. Lily, a todo momento. Quantas vezes ela havia sugerido que eu me aproximasse da comunidade marcial do Rio? Talvez por isso, quando os integrantes da dança do dragão começaram sua apresentação, eu tenha me segurado para não me emocionar. O barulho dos instrumentos era vibrante e um filme passou pela minha cabeça. Meu Si Fu dizia às vezes que devemos "ser éticos com a sorte", e ali eu aproveitava da minha imbatível sorte para viver aquele momento. Olhando então os integrantes do dragão, tão dedicados e focados na apresentação, lembrei de uma fala do Grão-Mestre Leo Imamura recentemente para mim e meu discípulo Lucas em São Paulo: "...Você não acha estranho estarmos aqui tão dedicados numa manhã em função do Kung Fu? Discutindo com tanta seriedade o tema que a Mestra Cristina trouxe? Não é interessante? Já parou para pensar nisso?" - E ali eu refleti: "Por que nos dedicamos tanto à promoção das artes marciais chinesas? De onde vem esse desejo?" - Não fui capaz de encontrar uma resposta enquanto segurava as lágrimas.

I entered the venue to a round of applause directed at all the Masters, Grandmasters, and distinguished guests present. We walked in a line to a large table adorned with flowers, each with our names displayed. There was my name next to the son of my dear teacher Lily.- "We represent a style," - I recalled Si Gung's words. Perhaps because I was so moved by the affection I received from each familiar face I encountered from different styles, I thought of many people and felt very grateful. Naturally, I thought of my Chinese teacher, Mrs Lily, the whole time. How many times had she suggested that I get closer to the martial arts community in Rio? Perhaps that’s why, when the dragon dance performers began their presentation, I had to hold back my emotions. The sound of the instruments was vibrant and a film played through my mind. My Si Fu used to say that we should "be ethical with luck," and there I was, making the most of my unbeatable luck to experience that moment. As I watched the dragon performers, so dedicated and focused on their presentation, I remembered something Grandmaster Leo Imamura recently said to me and my disciple Lucas in São Paulo: "...Don’t you find it strange that we are here so dedicated on a morning for the sake of Kung Fu? Discussing with such seriousness the topic that Master Cristina brought? Isn’t it interesting? Have you ever thought about that?"-  And there I reflected: "Why do we dedicate ourselves so much to the promotion of Chinese martial arts? Where does this desire come from?" I was unable to find an answer while holding back tears.

Foi muito impressionante observar todo o esmero do Mestre Serpio, do Jaime e de toda a equipe com o evento. O praticante do Programa Ving Tsun Experience, Natan Assis, também esteve presente conosco e apreciou bastante toda a manifestação cultural que ocorreu naquela manhã. Fomos embora um pouco antes do encerramento do evento devido aos demais compromissos do dia. Todos nós, sem exceção, fomos muito tocados por tudo o que aconteceu ali, algo que as palavras obviamente não conseguem expressar.

It was truly impressive to observe the care and attention that Master Serpio, Jaime, and the entire team put into the event. Natan Assis, a practitioner from the Ving Tsun Experience Program, was also present with us and greatly appreciated all the cultural expressions that took place that morning. We left a little before the event concluded due to other commitments for the day. All of us, without exception, were deeply moved by everything that happened there—something that words obviously cannot fully capture.

Após o almoço, ficamos apenas eu e Lucas no Mo Gun, trabalhando seu acesso ao Domínio Luk Dim Bun Gwan (foto acima). Lucas, logo depois, se dirigiu para a rodoviária para voltar a São Paulo, onde reside. Podemos dizer que foi um domingo muito especial, pois, acima de qualquer coisa, pude proporcionar aos meus discípulos e ao Natan um momento muito especial da Vida Kung Fu, e uma potencial inspiração ao observar o quanto a dedicação de uma única pessoa, como no caso do Mestre Serpio, GM Barbosa, GM Li, da minha Professora Lily, e do Jaime, pode promover algo tão especial para tanta gente como foi para nós aquele evento naquela manhã. Eu diria que foi inesquecível.

After lunch, it was just Lucas and me at the Mo Gun, working on his access to the Luk Dim Bun Gwan Domain (see photo above). Shortly afterwards, Lucas headed to the bus station to return to São Paulo, where he resides. We could say it was a very special Sunday, as above all, I was able to provide my disciples and Natan with a truly special moment in the Kung Fu life, and a potential inspiration, seeing how the dedication of a single person—such as Master Serpio, GM Barbosa, GM Li, my teacher Lily, and Jaime—can create something so special for so many people, just as it was for us that morning. I would call it unforgettable.

The Pin of the Moy Yat Sang Family: An Essay

Si Gung costuma falar da importância de estar com seu Si Fu em seus diferentes momentos de maturidade. Ele também ressalta que a relação discipular é medida em décadas e comenta que, se por um lado você deve respeitar aqueles que vieram antes, pois essas pessoas estavam atuando em uma década em que você ainda não estava na Família Kung Fu, por muitas vezes esse mesmo Si Hing deveria considerar a atuação do irmão Kung Fu mais novo, que pode estar atuando em uma década na qual o primeiro esteja mais distante.

Assim sendo, entre o primeiro Ato Cerimonial da minha Família Kung Fu em 9 de abril de 2016 e os tempos atuais, pude repensar muitas coisas. Uma delas foi quando, nessa primeira cerimônia, em um gesto de carinho, retirei o Pin do Grande Clã Moy Yat Sang (foto acima) do "Tong Jong" que usava e o coloquei na camisa do meu To Dai mais antigo que estava sendo admitido em minha Família naquela oportunidade. Eu tinha o Pin como um adereço, mas não compreendia por que ele tinha os ideogramas da Família Moy Yat Sang e também não sabia nada a respeito da razão pela qual antes usávamos o Pin da Família Moy Yat e depois passamos a usar o da Família Moy Yat Sang. Então, eu simplesmente dei a ele, como alguém que dá um presente para tornar ainda mais inesquecível um momento por si só já emblemático. Diferente daqueles tempos de 2016, muita coisa já aconteceu e hoje me é possível ter um entendimento mais apropriado a respeito desse item que, muito além de um adereço, pode-se dizer que é uma verdadeira honra portá-lo, em função de como ele surgiu.

Si Gung often speaks about the importance of being with your Si Fu through his various stages of maturity. He also emphasises that the discipular relationship is measured in decades and notes that, on the one hand, you should respect those who came before you, as they were active in a decade when you were not yet part of the Kung Fu Family. On the other hand, the same Si Hing should consider the contributions of the younger Kung Fu brother, who might be active in a decade when the former is more distant.

Therefore, between the first Ceremonial Act of my Kung Fu Family on April,9.2016 and the present time, I have had the opportunity to rethink many things. One such reflection was on the occasion of that first ceremony, when, as a gesture of affection, I removed the Pin of the Grand Moy Yat Sang Clan (see photo above) from the "Tong Jong" I was wearing and placed it on the shirt of my oldest To Dai, who was being admitted into my Family at that time. I saw the Pin as merely an accessory but did not understand why it had the ideograms of the Moy Yat Sang Family, nor did I know why we had previously used the Pin of the Moy Yat Family and later began using the Pin of the Moy Yat Sang Family. So, I simply gave it to him as one might give a gift to make an already emblematic moment even more memorable. Unlike those times in 2016, much has happened since then, and today I have a more appropriate understanding of this item, which, far beyond being just an accessory, can be said to be a true honour to wear, due to its origins.

Certa vez, Si Gung estava voltando de Angra dos Reis, uma cidade do estado do Rio de Janeiro, com o Mestre Fabio Gomes. Naquela ocasião, ele fez contato comigo e me convidou para passar a tarde com eles no aeroporto Santos Dumont até o horário do voo. Prontamente reorganizei minha agenda e dois discípulos me acompanharam na ocasião (foto acima). Naquela tarde, nos foi possível conversar sobre muitas coisas, dentre elas a razão do meu "Jiu Paai" ostentar o "logo" da Família Moy Yat Sang (mesma da 1ª foto). Pensando agora, me parece até mesmo estranho que nunca tenha me ocorrido ir atrás dessa informação. Acredito que esquecemos da responsabilidade da nossa função de "Si Fu" em detalhes como esse, que, assim como todos os demais, exige um aprofundamento para um melhor entendimento.

Si Gung comentou que certa vez recebeu uma ligação do Sr. Michael Wong em nome de sua Si Mo, a Sra. Helen Moy, que, dentre outras informações, ofertou, juntamente com uma única outra Família do Clã Moy Yat, a ter seu próprio Pin. Desta forma, ela mesma encomendou uma quantidade considerável com o Professor Kwon Chi Nam; esses são os Pins que os membros do Grande Clã Moy Yat Sang usam, e essa seria a razão de Si Gung usar um logo diferente da sua própria Família Kung Fu de origem: uma ligação de sua Si Mo, e não um desejo pessoal. - "... Você observa que o nosso Pin tem uma estética própria, bem chinesa..." - comentou ele sobre a qualidade estética do Pin e prosseguiu - "... A pessoa olha e sabe que é chinês... Por isso fico pensando quando acabar..." - comentou ele sorrindo. Perguntei então a Si Gung sobre como se dá a entrega do Pin, e ele falou que faz questão de entregá-lo sem cobrar nada. - "... E se a pessoa perder, ela pode me pedir outro que eu darei novamente..." - concluiu ele. Por isso também é possível ver Si Gung em algumas ocasiões perguntando a alguém: "Cadê o seu Pin? Você não tem Pin?" - Ele então costuma tirar um Pin do bolso e colocá-lo na lapela do terno da pessoa.

Once, Si Gung was returning from Angra dos Reis, a city in the state of Rio de Janeiro, with Master Fabio Gomes. On that occasion, he got in touch with me and invited me to spend the afternoon with them at Santos Dumont Airport until the flight time. I promptly rearranged my schedule, and two disciples accompanied me at the time (see photo above). That afternoon, we were able to discuss many things, including the reason why my "Jiu Paai" displays the logo of the Moy Yat Sang Family (same as in the 1st photo). Thinking back now, it seems strange that it never occurred to me to seek out this information. I believe we sometimes forget the responsibility of our role as "Si Fu" in details like this, which, like all others, requires in-depth understanding.

Si Gung mentioned that he once received a call from Mr Michael Wong on behalf of his Si Mo, Mrs Helen Moy, who, among other information, offered him, along with only one other Family from the Moy Yat Clan, to have their own Pin. Thus, she herself ordered a considerable quantity from Professor Kwon Chi Nam; these are the Pins that members of the Great Moy Yat Sang Clan use, and this would be the reason Si Gung uses a different logo from his own original Kung Fu Family: a request from his Si Mo, not a personal desire. - "... You observe that our Pin has its own, very Chinese aesthetic..." - he commented on the aesthetic quality of the Pin and continued - "... People look at it and know it is Chinese... That’s why I wonder what will happen when it runs out..." - he said with a smile. I then asked Si Gung about how the Pin is presented, and he mentioned that he insists on giving it without charging anything. - "... And if someone loses it, they can ask me for another, and I will give it again..." - he concluded. That is also why it is possible to see Si Gung on some occasions asking someone: "Where is your Pin? Don’t you have a Pin?" - He then often takes a Pin out of his pocket and places it on the person’s lapel.

Desde essa conversa com Si Gung no aeroporto, decidi usar apenas o Pin do Grande Clã Moy Yat Sang em qualquer ocasião. Pois, nesse período, pude elaborar uma ideia que me ajudou muito na compreensão da minha função. Percebi a importância de me manter, enquanto Si Fu, em coincidência com a Linhagem, pois sou um guardião do Sistema Ving Tsun e não o seu dono. Muitos e muitos anos atrás, ouvi meu Si Fu fazer uma alegoria na qual, se o Sistema Ving Tsun fosse um prédio, o Si Fu seria o porteiro. Levei muito a sério o que ele falou naquela ocasião, e acredito que é isso que um guardião faz: ele guarda. O que já é muita coisa.

Então, por mais que um discípulo meu desejasse que nossa Família tivesse seu próprio Pin, penso em uma entrevista que um Si Suk meu citou recentemente: ele dizia que um comandante de expedições para a Antártica, nas quais a margem de erro é zero, teria dito que, para fazer parte de uma expedição como essa, é importante entender que a pessoa terá direitos, mas em primeiro lugar vem o dever, e quem não entender isso não pode estar dentro. Com isso, entendo que, nos grandes e pequenos detalhes, quando eu não coincido com a Linhagem, no futuro eu posso acabar fazendo com que meus discípulos, que também se tornarem Si Fu, enfrentem uma escolha muito cruel: ter que escolher entre eu que sou Si Fu deles, e a Linhagem. Não uma única vez, mas várias. E eu não posso fazer isso com eles.

Since that conversation with Si Gung at the airport, I decided to use only the Pin of the Grand Moy Yat Sang Clan on any occasion. During this period, I was able to develop an idea that greatly helped me understand my role. I realised the importance of maintaining, as a Si Fu, alignment with the Lineage, as I am a guardian of the Ving Tsun System, not its owner. Many years ago, I heard my Si Fu make an analogy in which, if the Ving Tsun System were a building, the Si Fu would be the doorman. I took very seriously what he said at that time, and I believe that is precisely what a guardian does: he guards. Which is already a significant role.

Therefore, even though one of my disciples might wish that our Family had its own Pin, I think of an interview that a Si Suk of mine mentioned recently: he said that a commander of expeditions to Antarctica, where the margin for error is zero, would have stated that, to be part of such an expedition, it is important to understand that a person will have rights, but first and foremost comes duty, and anyone who does not understand this cannot be included. With this in mind, I understand that, in both major and minor details, if I deviate from the Lineage, in the future I might end up making my disciples, who will also become Si Fu, face a very cruel choice: having to choose between me as their Si Fu and the Lineage. Not just once, but several times. And I cant do that with them.
