Dinner with Grandmaster of Hung Ga, Marcos Hourneaux

 

Tem sido uma experiência muito rica a vivência do "Vida Kung Fu" com Si Gung em São Paulo. Na última vez, parecia que não conseguiria comparecer em todos os dias que havia me comprometido devido a outros compromissos, mas foi muito importante contar com sua ajuda para perceber que, com pequenos ajustes, tudo seria possível.

Talvez por isso, Si Gung sentou-se comigo naquela manhã de quinta-feira, junto do discípulo Daniel Eustáquio. Eu havia cumprido duas obrigações da minha empresa quase de madrugada e, do outro lado da cidade, fiz o possível para estar ali. O ponto não era exatamente outro senão entender que, se temos algo como prioridade, isso será feito. - “...E você não iria vir...” – teria dito Si Gung, sentado de frente para nós em uma cafeteria do aeroporto. Tínhamos um compromisso com os queridos Mestres Fábio Gomes e o COMANDOS, veterano do Exército Brasileiro, Sr. Marcelo Alves, em um evento de uma empresa de administração e segurança, onde Si Gung palestraria. No entanto, ele não parecia preocupado com isso naquele momento.
Si Gung preferiu discorrer sobre como percebia minha postura mudando nos últimos tempos, principalmente durante os encontros online. Lembro-me de uma ocasião em que ele chamou minha atenção com mais veemência, mas não recordo exatamente o motivo. Alguns minutos depois, ele me ligou para saber se eu havia compreendido o ponto. Pude então explicar que estava com o coração aberto para a experiência da "Vida Kung Fu" e que ele não precisava se preocupar.
Por isso, fosse sentado ali com Daniel ou em São Paulo com Lucas, para mim é muito tranquilo ser chamado a atenção na frente deles. Acredito que é importante permitir que eles, ou qualquer outro discípulo que desejar, vivam a experiência por completo. Além disso, confio muito no trabalho do Si Gung, pois enquanto me chamava a atenção,  com uma seriedade didática na voz, ele também ressaltava para Daniel a importância de apreciar a oportunidade de estar ali. Minutos depois, Si Gung estava rindo de alguma coisa. “...E você ia perder todo esse momento...” – ponderou ele e prosseguiu: “...Estou aqui por causa de vocês... Por causa de vocês e do Fábio também... E vocês querem perder a oportunidade... Não dá para entender...” – teria concluido. 

It has been a very enriching experience of having "Kung Fu Life" with Si Gung in São Paulo. The last time, it seemed that I would not be able to attend all the days I had committed to due to other obligations, but it was incredibly important to count on his help to realise that, with small adjustments, everything would be possible.

Perhaps that is why Si Gung sat with me on that Thursday morning, along with my disciple Daniel Eustáquio. I had fulfilled two responsibilities for my company almost at dawn and, having travelled across the city, did my utmost to be there. The key point was simply to understand that if we prioritise something, it will be done. “...And you weren’t going to come...” – Si Gung said, sitting opposite us in a café at the airport. We had a commitment with the esteemed Masters Fábio Gomes and the COMMANDOS, veteran of the Brazilian Army, Mr Marcelo Alves, at an event for a company in administration and security, where Si Gung was to give a talk. However, he did not seem worried about that at the moment.

Si Gung preferred to discuss how he perceived my posture changing in recent times, especially during the online meetings. I recall an occasion when he called my attention with more intensity, but I cannot remember exactly why. A few minutes later, he called me to check if I had understood the point. I was then able to explain that I was open-hearted to the "Kung Fu Life" experience and that he need not worry.

Therefore, whether sitting there with Daniel or in São Paulo with Lucas, I find it very comfortable to be stromgly addressed in front of them. I believe it is important to allow them, or any other disciple who wishes to, to fully experience the moment. Furthermore, I have great trust in Si Gung’s work, as while he was addressing me with a didactic seriousness in his voice, he was also emphasising to Daniel the importance of appreciating the opportunity to be there.

Minutes later, Si Gung was laughing about something. “...And you would have missed this entire moment...” – he remarked and continued: “...I am here because of you... Because of you and Fábio as well... And you want to miss the opportunity... I can’t understand...” – he would have concluded.

No dia seguinte, cheguei com Guilherme Serrão (aluno do Mestre Felipe) na rodoviária por volta das 3 da manhã. Havíamos cumprido um dia inteiro de atividades com Si Gung no dia anterior, e ali estávamos nós. Mais à frente, estava meu discípulo Lucas, que foi nos receber na rodoviária. Resolvemos, então, esperar amanhecer na loja de conveniência do posto de gasolina da Rua Nebraska. Compartilhamos vivências da Jornada Kung Fu até que finalmente fomos para a nossa querida Padaria Manhattan, onde encontramos Si Gung para mais um dia inteiro de Vida Kung Fu.

The next day, I arrived with Guilherme Serrão (a student of Master Felipe) at the bus station around 3 a.m. We had completed a full day of activities with Si Gung the day before, and there we were. A little further ahead was my disciple Lucas, who came to greet us at the bus station. We then decided to wait for dawn at the convenience store of the petrol station on Nebraska Street. We shared experiences from the Kung Fu Journey until we finally headed to our beloved Padaria Manhattan, where we met Si Gung for another full day of Vida Kung Fu.

Quando anoiteceu, eu estava bastante animado, pois teria a oportunidade de acompanhar a entrevista do lendário Grão-Mestre de Hung Ga, Marcos Hourneaux. A entrevista ocorreu no Mo Gun do Mestre Washington Fonseca, também no Brooklyn. Ele nos recebeu, e ao adentrar o local, fiquei muito impressionado com a estrutura que ele criou junto com o Si Suk Edson. Estava tudo muito claro e colorido, mas quando você vê a entrevista, a iluminação é assustadoramente diferente: assertiva e precisa.

Foi então que, após algum tempo, o praticante do Programa Ving Tsun Experience, Gino, chegou e logo depois o Grão-Mestre Marcos e seu filho Ulisses desceram e nos cumprimentaram. Para minha boa surpresa e honra, ele se lembrava do meu nome.

É difícil descrever como é acompanhar uma entrevista dessas ao vivo. Si Gung consegue se divertir sem perder o foco, e o GM Marcos fala com muita propriedade sobre tudo. Ele mal para para pensar, e você pode perceber, na certeza que ele coloca em cada palavra, décadas de estudo e dedicação às artes marciais chinesas, mas, acima de tudo, muito amor pela prática. Você poderia ficar sentado ali vendo os dois conversarem por muito mais horas... Cada lembrança de outros tempos deixava claro que as décadas não foram capazes de diminuir nem um pouco o entusiasmo dos dois dignitários.

When night fell, I was quite excited, as I would have the opportunity to watch the interview with the legendary Grandmaster of Hung Ga, Marcos Hourneaux. The interview took place at the Mo Gun of Master Washington Fonseca, also in Brooklyn. He welcomed us, and upon entering the venue, I was greatly impressed by the structure he had created alongside Si Suk Edson. Everything was very bright and colourful, but when you watch the interview, the lighting is strikingly different: assertive and precise.

It was then that, after a while, Gino, a practitioner of the Ving Tsun Experience Programme, arrived, and soon after, Grandmaster Marcos and his son Ulisses came down to greet us. To my pleasant surprise and honour, he remembered my name.

It’s difficult to describe what it’s like to witness such an interview live. Si Gung manages to have fun without losing focus, and GM Marcos speaks with great authority about everything. He barely pauses to think, and you can see in the certainty he places in each word, decades of study and dedication to Chinese martial arts, but above all, a great love for the practice. You could sit there watching the two of them converse for many more hours... Each recollection of times past made it clear that the decades had not diminished the enthusiasm of either of these dignitaries in the slightest.

Saindo de lá, fomos jantar todos juntos em um restaurante que costumo frequentar quando o Mestre Paulo Camiz está conosco. Tive um pequeno imbróglio com o Grão-Mestre Marcos, quando afirmei que o primeiro shopping center do Brasil é o Shopping do Méier (risos). Ele pareceu não acreditar na minha audácia, dizendo que esse título pertence ao Shopping Iguatemi em São Paulo(risos).

Foi então que presenciei e ouvi coisas muito especiais naquele singelo jantar que me tocaram profundamente como praticante de artes marciais. Por exemplo, o Grão-Mestre Marcos disse que se lembra de todas as “formas” que aprendeu até hoje. Ao ouvir isso, fiquei refletindo bastante... No Ving Tsun, temos seis listas, do Siu Nim Tau ao Baat Jaam Do... O que tenho feito com elas de bom em termos de aprofundamento?

After leaving, we all went to dinner together at a restaurant I usually visit when Master Paulo Camiz is with us. I had a little disagreement with Grandmaster Marcos when I asserted that the first shopping mall in Brazil is in Méier neighbourhood (laughs). He seemed to disbelieve my audacity, stating that this title belongs to  Iguatemi Mall in São Paulo (laughs).

It was then that I witnessed and heard very special things during that humble dinner that touched me deeply as a martial arts practitioner. For example, Grandmaster Marcos mentioned that he remembers all the “forms” he has learned to this day. Hearing this made me reflect a lot... In Ving Tsun, we have six lists, from Siu Nim Tau to Baat Jaam Do... What have I been doing with them in terms of depth?

Lembrei de quando vi o Professor Flávio fazer um “Poomsae” de Tae Kwon Do ao vivo em 1998 na minha primeira aula desta modalidade coreana, e de quão especial foi aquele momento. Vinte e seis anos depois, como Mestre de Ving Tsun, refleti que precisava me dedicar mais para honrar o espírito de principiante. Afinal, o Grão-Mestre Marcos falou muito sério.

Além disso, foi muito especial quando ele questionou Si Gung sobre como seria a tal “Ponte-longa” que havia mencionado no podcast. O Grão-Mestre Marcos poderia ter ficado ali conosco conversando sobre qualquer assunto, mas mais uma vez me deu um grande exemplo de como não devemos perder oportunidades. Si Gung, com a ajuda de Guilherme Serrão, imediatamente deu uma explicação de quase 10 minutos sobre esse conceito, o que animou o Grão-Mestre Marcos a mostrar um pouco do seu trabalho também(foto acima). O restaurante já estava fechado, mas estávamos tão imersos naquele momento que nem percebemos, e o dono não se atreveu a nos interromper; ele simplesmente ligou a TV e ficou assistindo a futebol.

I remembered when I saw Instructor Flávio perform a “Poomsae” of Tae Kwon Do live in 1998 during my first class in this Korean martial art, and how special that moment was. Twenty-six years later, as a Master of Ving Tsun, I reflected that I needed to dedicate myself more to honour the spirit of a beginner. After all, Grandmaster Marcos spoke very seriously.

Furthermore, it was particularly special when he asked Si Gung about the “Long Bridge” he had mentioned in the podcast. Grandmaster Marcos could have stayed there with us talking about any topic, but once again he set a great example of how we should not miss opportunities. Si Gung, with the help of Guilherme Serrão, immediately provided an explanation of nearly 10 minutes about this concept, which inspired Grandmaster Marcos to share a bit of his work as well (photo above). The restaurant was already closed, but we were so immersed in that moment that we didn’t even notice, and the owner did not dare to interrupt us; he simply turned on the TV and started watching football.

"...E aí? Como foi para você a experiência?..." - Perguntou-me Si Gung pouco antes de chegarmos ao prédio dos seus pais. Eu disse a ele que a responsabilidade que temos com a salvaguarda do Sistema Ving Tsun é a prioridade, mas que noites como aquela eram importantes também, pois era como se estivesse vendo duas fotos de revistas de artes marciais dos anos 90 ganhando vida ali na minha frente. Mais uma vez, ficou claro em pouco mais de 24 horas a importância de fazermos o possível para estarmos presentes naquilo que é importante para nós, pois eu também estava adiando minha ida para São Paulo para o dia seguinte e iria perder um dia como aquele. Esses momentos de altas aventuras nos fazem refletir sobre a necessidade de cultivarmos a força necessária para seguirmos sempre a direção que o coração aponta, enxergando recursos e fazendo ajustes onde antes não parecia possível, o que me faz lembrar a fala do sinólogo, Professor Pei Min Ni: "Nada é tão visível como o que está oculto".

“…So, how was the experience for you?…” - Si Gung asked me just before we arrived at his parents' building. I told him that the responsibility we have for the safeguarding of the Ving Tsun System is the priority, but that nights like that were also important, as it felt like I was seeing two magazine covers from martial arts in the 90s coming to life right in front of me. Once again, it became clear in just over 24 hours the importance of doing what we can to be present for what is important to us, as I was also postponing my trip to São Paulo to the following day and would miss a day like that. These moments of high adventure make us reflect on the need to cultivate the strength required to always follow the direction our hearts point, recognising resources and making adjustments where it previously seemed impossible. This reminds me of the words of the sinologist, Professor Pei Min Ni: "Nothing is as visible as what is hidden."
