(ABOUT THE CLOTHES USED IN KUNG FU)TONG JONG: A ROUPA DO KUNG FU

In October,26 ,2006 my life was very different. That was my brithday, and I was very happy 'cause for the first time people did a "surprise_party" for me at the Mo Gun, and it was organized by my dear kung fu sister Paula Gama(12G VT).

In the same day, Paula also gave me a gift, a gift that as Si Gung says is inside each Bruce Lee fanboy's mind: I won a...

"TONG JONG": A ROUPA DO KUNG FU
ESPECIAL PARTE 1

"Tong Jong": The Kung Fu Cloth
Special part 1

And that is me in that day with a Eddye Murphy style
Smile when I was wearing my beautiful gift.

É e não é "Yi Fu".
It is and it is not "YI FU"

What happens, is that this cloth that Si Taai Gung is wearing in the pic, in BRazil some people calls "Yi Fu".
But are two misunderstanding in this tought:

The first one, is that  "Yi Fu" or  "yīfu" , is the way that the ideograms are pronunciated in "Hànyǔ"汉语(Hon Jyu) or, Han Language.

Between the dialects in China, this one was choosen to be the official 'cause the Han are the marjority ethnic of China.
But Ving Tsun, comes from a place where the Cantonese Dialect is used. So, we can not mix mandarin(Han Yu) with Cantonese or any other dialect.

With so many people working the Cham Kiu with me last days,
I m always thinking about Si Sok Monique(11G VT). 'Cause she was the one who passed me the Cham Kiu sequence.

E sim, qualquer roupa.
Ji (衣) - no linguajar do dia-a-dia significa "roupa". Mas traduzindo, seria "capa" ou "pele".
Fuk(服) - Significa "Vestir".

"Ji Fuk" is more reazonable , cause is the pronunciation in cantonese.
But Ji Fuk(Yi Fu) , is not only the Kung Fu cloth, but EVERY CLOTH.
Ji (衣) -means "cover" or "skin"
Fuk(服) - means "to wear"
Assim Ji Fuk(Yi Fu) would be the substantive "cloth". Make a test: Go to google images and trhow these two ideograms: 衣服 (Ji Fuk ou Yi Fu) and see what happens!

Nas cavernas de Ohio em 1995, Si Taai Gung Moy Yat(centro) recebe Ip Chun[Si Taai Baak Gung] (esquerda) e Ip Ching[Si Taai Baak Gung](direita). Os 3 estão vestindo Ji Fuk(Yi Fu) ou seja: ROUPAS.

In the Ohio Caves in 1995, Si Taai Gung Moy Yat(middle), Ip Chun(Si Taai Bak Gung) and Ip Ching(Si Taai Baak Gung) are wearing Ji Fuk: CLOTHES!

There is another term, that people dont use so much in West:  Tong Jong (傏裝)
Tong Jong is a cantonese pronunciation of "Tang Dinasty Cloth".
In fact, Tong(or Tang in mandarin) is a way to talk about China, cause was during the Tang Dinasty that China florished.

Talking about the Tang Dinasty, the third movie of the Trilogy by Zhang Yi Mou (Hero and The House of the Flying Daggers), has in its title a part of a chinese poem from Tang Dinasty: The Curse of The Golden Flower.

tradução(interpretação aproximada): "Quando o Nono Festival Duplo chegar, minha flor vai desabrochar e todas as outras perecer. Quando o céu alcançar a fragância, permeia Chang'an. A cidade inteira estará vestida em armaduras douradas"

Translating(closely interpretation): "When the double festival comes, my flower will bloom and all the others die. When the sky reaches the fragance, permeates Chang'an. The whole city will be dressed in golden armors."

The whole population used to dress the same model, and Tong Jong was a male cloth. You could distinguish the social class of someone by the cut, the fabric the quality of the cloth and also, how it was dressed.

Under the Tong Jong coat, you could use a white shirt in the same format, but its sleeves would be longer and you would have to fold it above the Tong Jong coat(photo). This represented status, 'cause only people who had employees could be seen like if would never dirty their hands again.

Dentro do Kung Fu,a rigor somente o Si Fu , poderia usar as mangas brancas.

Inside the Kung Fu , indeed, only the Si Fu could wear the white sleeves above the Tong Jong. 'Cause a Si Fu has disciples, and he "would never have to dirty his hands".

Desenho de Si Taai Gung Moy Yat representando o Tong Jong tradicional de quatro bolsos, gola alta e botões fechados.

A skecth by Si Taai Gung Moy Yat about the Traditional Tong Jong with the four pockets,
high collar and bottoms closed.

COMO SER UM "MAFIOSO" SOMENTE USANDO TONG JONG.
How to be a gangster from Mafia (三合會) just wearing a Tong Jong.

During this exciting scene from FEARLESS,2006 , you can see that Jet Li's Tong Jong is
unbottoned next to his neck.

The Tong Jong coat is characterized by the high collar , the four pockets and the chinese bottoms, that must be bottoned.

Look above and notice that Jet Li is wearing the coat with the first chinese bottom unbottoned. In chinese classic way the first bottom is the most important in Tong Jong.  In fact, in the West ,where you unbotton the first bottom when it is a hot day, in chinese classic way, you must keepthe first bottom closed and unbottoned all the others.

If my english is not so good, understand what I meant above in this pic, look to
Si Gung Leo Imamura(10G VT) way to use the Tong Jong in a hot day in Rio de Janeiro, following the orientation of his Si Fu Moy Yat(9 G VT).

"I´ve always been in love with MAFIA stories. I still dream with the day that I´m gonna propose someone with two italians henchmen from Scicilia by my side, drinking some alcohool wearing a beret like Michael Corleone in GODFATHER."

MAFIA CHINESA e  "O MESTRE DAS ARMAS  "

Chinese Mafia calls  Saam Gap Wui (三合會) or triad [ "Meeting of an assemble of three"]

When Jet Li in the beggining of the movie FEARLESS wears the collar of his Tong Jong unbottoned, that represents rebellion, outrage. 'Cause you see that the name of the movie is "FEARLESS". But Jet Li is Fearless 'cause in the beggining of the movie he is an inconsequent. And that is represented by his unbottoned Tong Jong , very common between chinese mafia members a lot of years ago.

When Jet Li comes back after a long period exiled in the same movie, he is still "fearless" , but this time, he saw that "The whole is more important than the part". His victories and personal success where nothing compared to the martial arts. So, when he decided to look for martial arts propagation, Jet Li´s character becomes fearless , 'cause he gives up of his personal glory for something bigger. This maturity and change is represented by his all bottoned Tong Jong since he comes back.
