This post is more than special, because after two whole years using chinese words in order to refer to my Master and to the rest of the Kung Fu Family, the Blog will explain (superficially) these words and the Kung Fu Family's organization (according ot our Clan).

But before that, we must know that in China are spoken 56 different dialects, being the Han dialect the official one, known by us as Mandarin.
At the south region of China, though, one of the most used dialects is the Cantonese, and as Ving Tsun was created there, all of it's terms are spoken in Cantonese and the ideograms we use are the Traditionals, even though Chinese Government decided to chose the Simplifieds as the official writing method.

Obs.: The horizontal stroke below the simplified ideogram doesn't exist, I merely underlined it! hehe)

We can see above the "Si" ideogram, heavily used on Kung Fu Family names. In our Clan, we always refer to other family members as Si Hing, Si Je, Si Fu, Si Mo, Si Gung, Si Taai, Si Taai Gung, Si Taai Po, etc.

e
em Mandarim: Shi

We can also see the Tradicional version, used in south China and in Hong Kong, and the Simplified version, used in Mandarin, mainly at the north, where is located their Capital City.
The speech also changes between Mandarin and Cantonese:

in Cantonese: Si
and

That's why northern chinese arts members will refer to their family leader as Shi Fu, while southern arts leaders will be called Si Fu.

So let's understand these names using Cantonese with Traditional ideograms, after all that's what we use in Ving Tsun:

Starting with the word "Si Fu":

e

pelo ideograma "FU":

The name used to refer to a family's leader is "Si Fu." It's formed by the ideogram "Si" which means a "role model", someone who knows more about something.

and by the ideogram "FU":

That may sound like "Fu" from "Kung Fu" but has a completely different meaning, being "Father".

From that, we notice that translating this term as "Master" means losing a lot of this term's essence, but that a limitation of our native tongue.

The Si Fu is the Kung Fu Family Leader, he recieved an authorization from his own Si Fu in order to establish his Mun () [Family].

The "Si" suggests that the Si Fu knows more than his disciple, as he is walking this path for more time. "Fu" refers to the nature of being that Family's "Father" and as this word suggests, treating his students like "sons" not only like students or customers.

That's why, in our Clan, we believe that learning methods based on learning techniques at one and a half our sessions can't compare to the learnings you absorb by living with your Si Fu. After all the Kung Fu is in the Si Fu and that's why we value him so much (of course, there are many more reasons).

If we get the ideogram "Si" with the one for "Hing" we'll have "Si Hing".

Hing means "older brother".

Si Fu always joke with us telling that by the time we enter in the Kung Fu Family, we're already in debt with ours Si Hing. Because, according to the Chinese logic, that Si Hing didn't even know that you were alive and that you would train one day, but he was already training in order help you to the best of his abilities.

Nowadays, in many cases, Si Hing becomes some kind of title or graduation that a practitioner attains. Accordingly to Chinese etiquette, you should never refer to yourself as "Si Hing John" (depending on the context, obvious), as this term is used when a younger practitioner (on Kung Fu time) wants to attribute to his Si Hing the duty of caring for him/her.

That's why in our Clan, from the time one enters in the Family, you become his/her Si Hing, so it's your duty to care for that person's Kung Fu, even though you've never seen him/her before.

That's like having a brother. If you're older, you become a Si Hing by the time a younger kid is born, even if you don't want it to happen... hehe

The Daai() Si Hing is the oldest Kung Fu brother (the older big brother).
In my family, our Daai Si Hing is Mr. Leonardo Reis.
Now, notice how beautiful it is when we understand the words:

Confuso?

The members who joined the Kung Fu Family after you are your Si Dai.
The "Si" is still the same, but "Dai" (above) means "younger brother".

Don't know if you've noticed, but a possible translation would be: "younger brother who knows a little more than you."

Confusing?

Of course not! After all, if you have a younger brother who surfs and you don't even know how to swim, we agree that if you want to learn surfing, he will know a little more about it than you?

Even though, you should never refer to a younger brother as "Si Dai"

example: "Hey, Si Dai! Wanna train?"

This use is pejorative, it may sound like you're diminishing that person.

Now another example: "Carlos Antunes is my Si Dai."

I'm only pointing at my relation with Carlos to another person, this do not carry negative connotations.

Well, that's it folks, the firts batch of names.
We'll see more by the days:

With this first part you now understand fully that Master Julio Camacho is my Si Fu, Leonardo Reis is my Si Hing (and Daai Si Hing of Moy Jo Lei Ou Family) and that Carlos Antunes is my Si Dai.
There are many disciples between Carlos and me, but in order to know them all, you'll have to learn other ideograms on the next post!
