The Legend of Julio Camacho : The man who is changing the Ving Tsun as we know it.

The marks on the face, the gray hair, and a gentle way to be, like those people who seem to need something really amazing to get out of their calm and relaxed state. All of this do not hide the well-lived 48 years old of the Senior Master of Ving Tsun Julio Camacho.

Born in Rio de Janeiro, the man who has one of the most innovative minds among professionals in his area, has been transmitting Ving Tsun in his hometown for the past 25 years. In this period, he formed or had a fundamental role in the trajectory of some of the most renowned Ving Tsun masters in the world, among them Master Ursula Lima. However, more than the professionals he helped to train, Master Julio Camacho, he has formed human beings over the years, through a tireless look always pointed towards the future. A future often contested by his peers who could not see so far.

After more than two decades of a life rich in experiences worthy of a movie or a book of unbelievable tales. Master Julio Camacho, with the consent of the living legend of Ving Tsun in South America, Grand Master Leo Imamura, who is his Master. He has begun from the last year with the help of some of his closest disciples, a work so innovative that its benefits will be availed not only for its contemporaneity, but also for future generations . And last weekend, an audience that can be considered lucky, witnessed the story being made, when participating in a Seminar that can be considered a true ground-breaker not only in Moy Yat Ving Tsun Martial Intelligence, but also in the world of Chinese martial arts in general, especially the Ving Tsun: "The Seminar of Theoretical Alignment Vol. 1"

Master Julio Camacho, passed through the 90's like a true hurricane in Moy Yat Ving Tsun of Brazil, when he received for four consecutive years the honor of professional of the year of this institution. It seems like a bamboo shoot that shoots up without warning in the dead of night, all of his projects are taking shape at one time almost two decades later. And the scariest thing of this is: He already seemed to know that!
The "Seminar of Theoretical Alignment Vol. 1", composes part of the formation of the "Instructors" that will coordinate what he named "Fundamental Program" also called "P1".

In a single weekend, with Grand Master Leo Imamura speeches recorded with high resolution images especially for this event. The public was introduced to the first 36 subjects considered fundamental for a practitioner or instructor to be able to discuss.
For the first time, it will be possible for a practitioner who begins his practice in Ving Tsun, to have contact with each class, with a different theoretical theme in a formal way.
For the instructor, it will not take many years for him to be able to have a reasonable amount of knowledge about the art he practices. Remembering that this is only the "Vol. 1" of this Seminar.

When talking with Master Julio Camacho, it is possible to feel the air vibrate. He seems an inexhaustible source of creative energy and careful attention. The minutest details of a simple everyday expression such as "good morning," gives him everything he needs to get smiles from the audience with some in-depth observation of a theme as simple as that: "When someone gives you a 'good morning,' you do not say 'thanks', then you also say 'good morning' without actually wanting the person to have a 'good morning.' Nor does the person respond to you and you do not care about the fact that she or he did not respond. " - Says the Senior Master.

To live those two days in the company of Master Julio Camacho, seemed in a certain way, to make a tour by part of what his vision in the future was seeing years before. For from its mature approach, sober and innovative on what the Ving Tsun System can provide. The place itself, the brand new MYVT Rio de Janeiro I O2 Barra da Tijuca School, which hosted the event, is meticulously designed to welcome this new phase of his professional career without limits.

It seems that gradually the legacy of the Moy Yat Lineage in Brazil begins a new saga, and the man who inherited the ability to see the future, as well as the generations that precede him in this line of successive generations of the Ving Tsun System, becomes a legend. But more importantly: A professional who is truly opening new doors for other Ving Tsun professionals in Brazil and around the world.

How to practice Ving Tsun with no Money. part 1

(Si Suk Ursula and I together in the surprise celebration of my birthday in 2010)

It was a weekday, I was sat with Si Suk Ursula for lunch at some restaurant in Barra Garden Mall in the 2000s. A member of the Family was moving away after many years because of financial matters, and Si Suk Ursula after saying goodbye she said kind of sad as she held her fork something related to the fact that often a person who apparently does not have the conditions to pay the fees for his or her practice, but who has the will for it, finds a way.
(Eu executando o "Siu Nim Do" observado por Si Suk Ursula)
(I performing the "Siu Nim Do" observed by Si Suk Ursula)

When I started in Ving Tsun I had a good coordination of my body, I was full of energy, my health was great, I had all the conditions to pay for the practice, etc ... This was even the "Mui Fa Jong". From there, my parents decided they were no longer willing to invest in a "Hobby", as they considered it.
Years later, as a professional, I heard several times  phrases such as "I'm kind of sedentary" ... All these phrases tried to justify something that could be done before or during practice . That's because, most people look at life from a "personal activism" perspective. If something did not work, it was because they could not do it by themselves.
(Bruce Lee in an interview that would be known as "Lost Interview")

Its unkown, that within this Chinese logic in which the Ving Tsun is inserted, we find a thought of efficacy which, by projecting no plan on the course of things, neither need to consider conducting under this half-end angle: therefore, not from an application but from exploitation (taking advantage of the potential involved in the situation).
That is, the fact that you can practice independently of your age, or perform a practice even in your best physical form, would not depend on what you can, but how much you can rely on what the scenario offers. It turns out, that quoting Bruce Lee in his well-known "Lost Interview" that is available on youtube, he says that the ultimate skill of a martial artist should be honesty.
(Com Si Fu durante almoço em São Paulo em 2016)
(With Si Fu during lunch in Sao Paulo in 2016)

- Teria dito Si Fu.

Over the years, Si Fu has talked about many things for me, which I have never forgotten again: One of them was about the fact that many times when we talk about something, give an advice to someone, or tell a story, we would actually be talking to ourselves. We need to hear ourselves talking about it.  All this, in a conscious but mostly unconscious way: "... The way the person assembles the thought ... The order that it presents what composes the speech, shows a lot too ..." - Had Si Fu said.
(Hot-dog time!
(Hot-dog time! With Si Suk Ursula in Ipanema in the first half of 2011)

So, in that conversation, Si Suk Ursula was also talking about it in a way. Because over time in a Kung Fu Family, you begin to value a number of things and moments that you could not do before. And by attributing this value appropriately, and even more: By being part of all the thinking that leads to it . Be in the form of an event, dinner, practice, etc ... That you at any given time stops finding something "expensive". Just as the "Yi Ji Kim Yeung Ma" stance is uncomfortable on the first day and then you appropriate it to the point of being comfortable.
Because we are talking about a symbolic value embedded in the object or moment. And therefore, precisely because we are able to give due value to the full access we are given to the Ving Tsun System that we mobilize ouserlves to keep moving foward. And in a perhaps magical way, we always find a way to move forward on this journey. We may walk 15 steps in one day, and in the next we will only stay where we are, but because we have the full notion of the treasure that is given to us by our Si Fu, we do not dare to leave the road.

So in this coexistence with Si Fu, I heard from him years ago that I should stop trying to convince him that I had no money, but take a time to wonder if I was choosing other things to invest.
When you have a Si Fu, you will find this one person, who will not let you convince him of any of that. He will listen to you with all his heart, but will not allow you to convince him of this or other things for a moment. Maybe, you were so bad at that time, that he just respects the moment for who knows, talk to you better later. But if you have any condition to hear it, he will probably call you to the move again.
(Walking through practice in mid-2009 at Méier)

Você deve estar pensando: "Ei! Qual a razão disso tudo?

You should be thinking, "Hey, what's the point of all this?" - Well, my Si Gung once said: "Kung Fu means accumulation of potential." - I found this interpretation very interesting, and I never forgot it again. So, there I was hearing from a student, that he was tired and so was not doing well in practice. I had heard something like that many times, but it was only that time that, like a torrent, it all came to my mind. And it was only then that I asked myself, "If it is possible to be a Kung Fu Master even though one is not the best fighter, or the best physically fit, because one rests on the potential of the situation. Does not this also apply to scarcity of money?"
Therefore, when we give up the justifications either to ourselves or to third parties, because we understand that no justification will change the situation, we will have the potential to understand how to be an excellent martial artist even though one is not the strongest, faster or even the person with more time or more resources. And if we can, with all that, be a great martial artist, why not, a great human being?

Special Class with Master Julio Camacho at the Moy Fat Lei Family´s house.

There is a mysterious period which the animal from the previous year is withdrawing and the animal of the new year is coming when it comes to Chinese culture and its "New Year" celebrations. At this point, the natures of the two years is mixed so you need to keep caution on bad news during this period. So, according to what I once heard, some people even turn off cell phones in this period so they do not receive any more bad news.

I do not know all the countries of the world and their cultures, not even Brazil. However, our tropical country resembles China. And one of those similarities, is that Brazil can overcome China in this "mysterious period" from one year to the next. For although we celebrate New Year's Eve like most of the countries of the West on 31 December. What few people know outside of Brazil, is that the year, in fact, just starts for us after what we call Carnival. So, it's like we're in a kind of limbo, we are in 2018 but the year did not started yet.

Despite this peculiar Brazilian tradition, on January 4 of this year, the first day of operation of the Moy Fat Lei Family House in Méier. We received just over forty people who attended a historic "Inaugural Class" coordinated by Moy Jo Lei Ou Clan Leader in person. So, as wildfire, the news that the world-famous Senior Master Julio Camacho would be in the neighborhood presenting his innovative project "Fundamental Program" spread. And right on the first day of operation, the Clan Moy Jo Lei Ou was on fire at full throttle!

But this story started much earlier ...
(Si Fu visita o Mo Gun de nossa Família Kung Fu e tece importantes comenátios)
(Si Fu visits our Kung Fu Family´s Mo Gun and says some importants comments)

Si Fu had slept a few hours that night, and when he got out of the car, I could see he was a little tired. But it was only necessary that he take up the air so that his vigor and enthusiasm returned. He was wearing all black, like when we first met. That's because, in more than a decade, Si Fu has never been so active in several aspects simultaneously. Unlike those times, Si Fu returns to lead the management team not only of a single School, but of several. Moreover, as we are in a different era, he can not or , should not and does not want to do everything by himself. And so, he has been turning boys into a cohesive group in a short time.
( A smalltalkie with Si Fu about some considerations of him)

Si Fu insists a lot on me about the fact that it is not doing more of the same that we will get different results. In this way, without rest, a courageous group coordinated by Si Fu since November 21 has been holding daily meetings from 6:30 am to 7:30 am in order to change the current paradigm of how we professionally understand our careers . The legacy that Si Fu is leaving with everything he has been doing may be understood only ten years from now. For the moment, I do not think anyone on Moy Yat Ving Tsun has been waking up so early and sleeping as late during the holidays as Si Fu was.

(Si Fu started with a short lecture on Ving Tsun System)

When he got downstairs, it was as if a renowned magician had appeared to make his show. Everyone gathered in silence and quickly the contagious presence of Si Fu occupied the whole place. Not that he wanted it, but this is the odd spell he seems to have on people more than two decades, captivating to the point of such an exotic theme as "Chinese Variation System," catching one´s eye on a Thursday´s Night in a neighborhood of the North Zone of Rio.
(Some of the present people could support Si Fu on his demonstrations)

When Romario was near the end of his career, some reporter asked him if his failure to sprint as he had when he was a young man disturbed him. Romário just replied, "I do not need to run, the ball runs to me."
Watching Si Fu that night was something like that. He made no effort to win over the audience, he just took what was offered and worked on it. And somehow, it was as if everything was previously combined with the audience: The jokes, the motions, the laughter, etc ... Even though they did not know. It was so natural that everything flowed.

I was there too and I could rest easy to enjoy the moment provided by Si Fu. I was fortunate enough to see old familiar faces. Kung Fu brothers like Rodrigo Demetrio, or old friends like Iron Jr (photo).

At one point, Si Fu who passed by me while everyone was practicing commented: "Have you seen how everyone is smiling?" - Si Fu referred to the lightness of the proposed practice, based on the concepts of the "Fundamental Program." A Program that aims to welcome practitioners who start their practice in one of the "Integrated Management" schools at a first moment.

And as in a "Blink of an eye" the night was over. Many of those present somehow tried to exchange some words with Si Fu or record that moment in photo. That night, we still talked a lot on the way home, and we went to dinner together. Around 00h I had one of the most important conversations with Si Fu recently, but this is a story for another day

"Kei Pou"(旗袍) the chinese dress for women

(A co-líder do Grande Clã Moy Yat Sang , Sra Vanise Imamura,
usando um vestido chines ou "Kei Pou"(旗袍).)
(The Co-leader of Grand Clan Moy Yat Sang, Mrs. Vanise Imamura,

In March of 2015, when Si Taai Vanise Imamura took the microphone to speak a few words due to the anniversary of her husband, Si Gung Leo Imamura. Among the first things she spoke about, she referred to being very happy to see everyone present, among whom she met more than two decades before as Si Fu, so well dressed. She joked about how things were at the beginning of the Moy Yat Sang Family in Brazil.

Si Gung innovated in various aspects of Kung Fu in Brazil. From the most exotic to the most obvious. Within what lies in the second group, the group of things obvious, is the proper way of dressing. As we can see in this very striking photo of Si Taai Vanise, Si Taai Po Helen and Si Gung, on the occasion of the birthday celebration of the matriarch of the Moy Yat Lineage in Brasilia.

Si Fu over the decades has been getting deeper and deeper in what concerns to understand the dress more appropriate to a certain occasion. However, this knowledge did not come from a "theoretical class" given by Si Gung at some point in the past, but rather upstream. As Anne Cheng writes, the famous French synlogist, in her masterpiece "The History of Chinese Thought" (Histoire de la pensee chinoise, Paris, 1997): "... The first orientation, eminently illustrated in the Confucian tradition, the passage is to understood in Chinese terms as the relation between the latent and its visible manifestation, whereas the Taoist tradition, which represents the main alternative, privileges and cultivates the underworld - or the upstream - of the visible ... "

When it comes to Chinese martial arts, a lot of people gets confused with regard to correct dressing protocol. Costumes worn for practice are confused with formal dress, and in the case of women, it is not difficult to see a garment with motives inappropriate for a particular occasion.

chèungsàam é a pronuncia em cantonês para:
chèungsàam is the pronunciation for:

長(chèung) - "longo" (long)
衫(sàam) - "Vestido". (dress)

This pronunciation is the cantonese version for the shanghainese "zǎnze"(长衫) , wich contrast with the mandarin chángshān(长衫), that is a term only for male clothes and QiPao(旗袍) for female clothes. But this dress , wich came from Manchuria, was used for the first time by "Han"(汉) women trough shanghainese students.  Besides, ShangHai tailors fled to Hong Kong after Comunists Revolution in Continental China, and start to use chèungsàam for men and women. And QiPao[Kei Po](旗袍) became a more formal term.

Over the years, this Manchu dress garment, where in the thirties became more fair to the body, following western patterns of the time. In the 1940s they finally become a standard pattern of Chinese women on special occasions around the world.

(Si Fu recebe Hung Baau de Carol Archanjo , por ocasião de sua entrada na Família Moy Fat Lei e consequente entrada no Clã Moy Jo Lei Ou, Ao lado dele, Si Gung, Líder do Grande Clã Moy Yat Sang. (Si Fu receives Hung Baau from Carol Archanjo on the occasion of her entry into the Moy Fat Lei Family and consequent entry into the Clan Moy Jo Lei Ou, next to him isSi Gung, Leader of the Grand Clan Moy Yat Sang The date in question, marked not only the first year of the Moy Fat Lei Family, but also the Clan Moy Jo Lei Ou and Grand Clan Moy Yat Sang first year as clan and Grand Clan.)

I am not yet able to have an understanding as vast as that of Si Fu on the most different garments for the most different occasions. But the simple fact of living with someone like that makes you somehow uncomfortable with the "Inadequate" even if you do not know the reason well. Hence, again quoting Anne Cheng: "... It is about learning, not for others, but with others. Everything provides an opportunity to learn, since one learns especially in the exchange ... "
In the analects of Confucius one reads: "The Master says: When one walks, even if only three, each is sure to find in the other a master, considering what is good to imitate him and what is bad to correct him in himself "(VII, 21)

- Relatou a professora.

Note that on some of the models, a wristband is present. This accessory is very common not only for women, but also for men, only with other formats. These bracelets are usually made of jade, the national stone of China.
According to the Chinese Culture Professor of PUC-Rio Wei Oh Lin, in conversation with my Si Fu that I was able to witness in 2008. The purpose of jade is to protect its wearer from possible accidents: "... My daughter did not believe in that. she used to live in Germany, something was going to happen to her, but the jade bracelet I gave broke for the first time for no apparent reason. Then she came to believe it, so it's good to wear jade ... "- Reported the teacher.

(We can live by living, or living with art. According to Si Gung, it is not possible to teach Kung Fu, one can only learn Kung Fu, but what is the reason for learning?)

According to classical Chinese thinking, learning is therefore becoming a "good man" or "learning is learning to make oneself a human being." And according to the synlogist Anne Cheng, there is no better expression than this to say that being human is something you learn. That is, our humanity (here described as our ability to connect) is not a given, is built and woven in the interchanges between people and in the pursuit of a common harmony. All of human history as well as our individual experience are there to confront us with the evidence that we are never human enough, and that we will never end up becoming more human.

(Si Fu and his girlfriend Marcia Moura in the former Mo Gun of Family Moy Jo Lei Ou, on the occasion of the breakfast organized by her in honor of his birthday earlier this month)

Maybe you wonder what this all has to do with the fight. I'm not the best person to explain that. I do not even know if I should. What I can say is that Si Fu perhaps in his quest for a deepening undesrtanding in each subject that he dedicates, prefers not to be in the superficiality or the common sense. Because if we think about fighting, that inadequate movement, and that it distorts, may be the least necessary for you to die. That inappropriate gesture, when you need to move the cell phone to the bad guy and that distune. Maybe it's the least you need to die. Finally, that dress, which you wear in a hurry, and does not think much about it, may be the least necessary, for you to distune. And when you distune, you lose the connection, and when you lose the connection, you lose humanity.

MYVT Meier School's Ivitation to move out

(foto do primeiro "Sam Toi" do Núcleo Méier.)
(Meier School's first Sam Toi)

I can still remember sitting on the floor with Si Suk Ursula. We were in a room, the old and worn-out board floor. We sat on treadmills used for practicing Yoga. It was December 2010 and we waited for the owner of the place where the MYVT Meier Studio worked for a conversation. Si Suk Ursula no longer cared for Méier School directly, but her close relationship with the Moy Jo Lei Ou Family, with its Leader and me, took her there for that conversation.
When the owner of the place sat down, we already knew how the conversation would end. And that simple invitation to remove us from the place was not surprising. We could never say that it "went wrong" or anything like that. A lot of good things had happened during the time we were there, and that cycle was coming to an end.

When you are part of a Kung Fu Family, you learn at some point not to listen with your ears, but with your heart. Sometimes we do not listen with our hearts and in those moments we get in trouble. So, unlike the objective invitation to move that I told you in the first paragraph, it's been quite a while since a series of clues led me to believe that it was time for the Mo Gun of Moy Fat Lei Family to move.
We find in Chinese Classical Culture this notion of "opportunity moment". A moment that if we lose it, we lose strategic effectiveness as well. This same classical culture tells us that this "Occasion" is not a simple chance that appears in passing, but rather the manifestation of a series of circumstances, inciting action and favoring its success.

(Si Fu does not hide his happiness by witnessing one more of his visions manifested through his disciple number 16, Claudio Teixeira. Next to them, my sister Kung Fu Maria Alice.)

Then, on any given Friday, I picked up Si Fu at his house by Uber and we went together to the place where it will be the Ipanema School, led by the disciple of the Clan Moy Jo Lei Or who also follows Si Fu in his travels, Claudio Teixeira.
It's in a gallery that I've been at the door countless times, and just around the room, the location was already valid, but when I came across it, so wide and incredible, I was speechless.

(A "selfie" of yet another historical moment of our Clan. Si Fu
still seemed to see more things that morning)

Inside me, a mixture of happiness and pride to see another school of our Clan being born. Remembering, of course, that little more than a year ago Si Fu had told me that he was seeing Ten new schools of Clan Moy Jo Lei Ou in the next few years. I was also happy for Claudio, we've known each other for a long time, but to see someone getting involved like him, with so much heart, is always exciting.

But while Si Fu was looking (photo) at the possibilities with Claudio and Maria Alice, who was also present. A single sentence crossed my mind (photo). : "H *** S****! Claudio just closed the Méier school!"

(In the building of the future MYVT Ipanema School, there is a top bookstore
which has a fine restaurant)

I kept the phrase in my head because the potential of the room, its surroundings and everything that compose it is of such a quality that no matter how much I have this nostalgic feeling for the room we occupied in Méier nieghborhood, but on that Friday morning, made it unfeasible to remain in it.
Then, suddenly, it was as if a lightning bolt had hit me, and without the need for anyone to invite me out of that room, I felt that it was necessary.
It is that according to classical Chinese logic, when we act in the "opportunity moment", when we take advantage of the potential that it carries, we can even make a simple intervention in the course of things, but there is accumulated potentiality that when awakened (usually when we become aware of a process whether bodily or in life), it may not even be considered an intervention.

(Introducing the new  "Kung Fu Names" of the two ne disciples of the Clan Moy Jo Lei Ou)

Then, as if that were not enough, a little more than a month later, a new "opportunity moment" arose. Maybe because I did not take advantage of the first, I saw myself for the first time standing inside the new Barra School. A place with about 100 m² and with all its area, divided into rooms perfectly designed for each activity. And while talking about the "Kung Fu Names" of the new disciples of the Clan, again, in my heart the "squeeze" that precedes a decision ...

See: When you are about to end a process, this occasion that we feel or that some people like Si Fu can see, it is actually two crucial moments: the beginning and the end of a transformation. And I (photo) still like to fantasize that "the decision is mine". But this "opportunity moment" is as if it were the culmination of a development, and everything that has happened there prepared it. Therefore, that many attitudes of a Si Fu that may seem suddenly, are nothing more than the fruit of an evolution that must be taken in its departure, as soon as it appears.
(Demonstrando o Biu Ji na Cerimônia de Biu Ji Certification em 2007)
(Demonstrating Biu Ji at the Biu Ji Certification Ceremony in 2007)

And so perhaps, that yfor being a Master of Ving Tsun, you must first have studied and experienced the "Biu Ji". Because many times, to "get moving" we can not delay timely triggering. And perhaps from there, comes the phrase of Si Gung, when he says that "Courage is circumstantial," because to "set us in motion", we may also have to put ourselves in a situation of risk sometimes.
(Recebendo Si Fu no Núcleo Méier)

When I really got to know myself, it was also the day I discovered that I was not that aggressive, introverted guy who wanted to be a fighter. I flirted with the "semi-structured phase," but I discovered myself as a guy from "Siu Nim Tau," the most structured Domain of all System. But the deeper you go in the "Mo Lam", the less it cares about your  "usual way", but your ability to handle your  vocation. With a "call to action" that is far beyond our will.
