Começo este post agradecendo a este incrível e histórico presente de Si Baak Anderson entregue a mim por Si Fu durante a viagem a NY.
Um DVD imperdível de uma entrevista em Hong Kong com Leung Hin Ming,ou Ming Jai. Si hing de
Si Gung Leo Imamura, e discípulo de Moy Yat ainda nos anos '60 em Hong Kong.

No mesmo dia ainda estive com Si Fu fazendo o Yam Cha. Ocasião na qual ele me apresentou o livro de autoria de Si Sok Leonardo Mordente entitulado "Dr. Leung Jaan". Na capa apontada por Si Fu, vemos a imagem da porta da casa de Leung Jaan.

Hoje comemoramos o aniversário de Mestre Julio Camacho. Meu Si Fu, e de tantos outros praticantes.
Também como Si Hing de várias pessoas, sempre foi um exemplo.
November,30 we celebrate the birthday of Master Julio camacho 11G VT. My Si Fu and Si Fu of so many others.
He´s also an example as a Si Hing.

A cultura japonesa é bem mais "certinha"(straight) do que a chinesa a olhos vistos. Mas ainda assim, queria citar aqui uma passagem de um de meus livros de cabeceira chamado Hagakure, de Yamamoto Tsunetomo, onde de maneira enfática ele disserta sobre a etiqueta samurai:
" ...A cabeça do guerreiro deve estar apenas em seu Mestre. Bem como, a cabeça da esposa deve estar somente em seu marido..."
Isso pode soar um tanto quanto machista e extremista, mas eu venho aprendendo a cada ação do meu Si Fu e Si Mo que não é bem assim...afinal, "Uma palavra pode convencer, mas um exemplo arrasta."
Japanese culture is far more "uptight" (straight) than the Chinese. But still, I cite here a part of a text from one of my bedside books called Hagakure by Yamamoto Tsunetomo, where emphatically he talks about the samurai way:
"... The mind of the warrior should only be in his Master. As well, the mind of his wife should be only in her husband ..."
This may sound somewhat extremist, but I'm learning in every action of my Si Fu and Si Mo that is not so like this ... after all, "A word can convince, but a example gathers."

Ir para os EUA não é tão fácil. É caro, exige tempo, e a agenda durante estas viagens é bem puxada. São vários dias(e noites) muito intensas. Si Fu há mais de dez anos atrás queria muito ir junto de Si Gung Leo Imamura aos EUA porém tudo que poderia dar errado estava dando. E nos 45 min do segundo tempo, após muito suor, enfim ele estava lá.
Quando conheceu Si Taai Gung Moy Yat ele disse a Si Fu algo como: "Então você é o Julio aluno do Leo?...Você vai me prometer que vai voltar todos os anos, ok?"
Eu não sei o quanto Si Taai Gung disse isso brincando, mas Si Fu levou a sério e assim o fez até a sua morte no início desta década.
"...A Si Mo grávida, a gente sem grana, morando numa casa que era do meu tio e eu indo pra NY com o Si Gung. Como você acha que as pessoas viram isso? Não tinha como explicar..."
Go to the U.S. is not so easy for a brazilian. It's expensive, takes time, and the schedule for these kung fu family trips are hard. Several days (and nights) very intense. Si Fu for over ten years ago wanted to go along with Si Gung Leo Imamura(10G VT) to the U.S. but everything that could go wrong was giving. And in 45 minutes into the second half(*a brazilian expression), after much sweat, finally he was there.
When he met Si Taai Gung Moy Yat he said something like this to Si Fu Julio: "So you're the student of Leo? Julio? ... Will you promise me you'll come back every year, okay?"
I do not know if was a joke by Si Taai Gung , but Si Fu took it seriously and did so until Si Taai Gung passed away earlier this decade.
"... Si Mo was pregnant, we were broke of money, living in a house that belonged to my uncle and I was going to NY with Si Gung. How do you think people seen this? There was no way to explain ..." (Si Fu telling to me someday).
LONGE DE CASA. AWAY FROM HOME.
Si Fu tem esposa e duas filhas. E seu aniversário sempre cai justamente na época dessas viagens a NY para celebração dos aniversários. Por isso, em vários anos como este de 2010, Si Fu esteve longe de sua Família Kung Fu, mas principalmente de sua esposa, Si Mo Daniela, e de suas duas filhas, a praticante Jade e a pequena Julia.
"...Pereira, sabe onde eu vou estar no dia do meu aniversário? Em NY. A Jade já até acostumou, mas como você acha que a Julia vai encarar isso? Mesmo a Jade no fundo e a própria Si Mo? E eu?... "

Si Fu Julio(11G VT) has a wife and two daughters. And his birthday is in a day just at the time of these trips to New York for the celebration of birthdays. So in several years as this 2010, Si Fu was far from his Kung Fu family , but principally from his wife, Si Mo Daniela(11G VT), and their two daughters, Jade(12G VT) and the little Julia.
"... Pereira, Do you know where I'll be on my birthday? In NY. Jade is already accustomed to, but how do you think Julia will face it? Even Jade inside, and even Si Mo? And I? ... " (Si Fu said to me this year)
A "Guerra" dos dois. The "War" between them.
Nos filmes, geralmente os Mestres vivem sozinhos numa casa bem distante da civilização, e em alguns casos como em "Kickboxer" do Van Damme, tem no máximo uma sobrinha bonita pro personagem principal se dar bem.
Mas a vida real, pelo menos a de meu Si Fu, é diferente:
"...Pereira,quando se quer de verdade construir uma vida ao lado de alguém, a sua vida passa a não ser mais só sua.Você passa a não poder tomar certas decisões sozinho. Você tem que considerar a pessoa que está com você..." - disse Si Fu pra mim dias antes de partir nesta viagem.
Por isso, para Si Mo, mais no início acredito eu, era para ela também uma guerra intensa. Afinal, quando você se casa com um médico-cirugião e o celular dele toca na madrugada,ou ele passa dias longe por causa de um congresso ou fazendo um curso de especialização, você conta com o apoio e aprovação das pessoas para com o trabalho de seu marido, e isso te fortifica. Mas como explicar que seu marido teve que viajar por dias para acompanhar "seu Si Fu"? E o que é um "Si Fu" neste contexto? E o mais interessante é que tanto a pessoa que viaja seguindo seu Si Fu, quanto a pessoa que fica a sua espera, por vezes perguntam isso a si mesmos. E o melhor de tudo, é que não tem uma resposta clara.
In the movies, the Masters usually lives alone in a house far away from civilization, and in some cases as in "Kickboxer" movie starring Van Damme, has at most a beautiful niece for the main character gets her.
But in real life, at least in my Si Fu's life is different:
"... Pereira, when you want to really build a life with someone, your life becomes not only your anymore.You are unable to take certain decisions for yourself. You have to consider the person you're with ... " - Si Fu said to me days before leaving on this trip.
Therefore, for Si Mo Daniela(11G VT),his wife, I believe (more in the beginning), for her was also an intense war. After all, when you marry a surgeon-doctor- and his mobile phone rings at night, or he satys days away because of a meeting or doing a specialized course, you count on the support and approval of persons to the work of your husband, and it makes you stronger. But how to explain that your husband had to travel for days to follow "his Si Fu"? And what is a "Si Fu" in this context? And most interesting is that both: the person who travels following his Si Fu, as the person who is waiting, sometimes ask it to Themselves. And best of all, is that they do not have a clear answer.

Por isso quando Si Fu viaja, por vezes existe um objetivo claro, mas na maioria é simplesmente para acompanhar seu Si Fu,meu Si Gung. E Si Mo fica aqui.
Acreditar no seu próprio sonho quando ninguém entende ou incentiva é muito difícil. Mas acreditar na importância do sonho de alguém quando nem ao menos é possível explicar por vezes a si mesmo a importância invisível destas viagens é talvez, o que o trecho do livro Hagakure acima queira dizer...
A Si Mo, esteve em todas as viagens junto do Si Fu, ainda não que fisicamente.
So when Fu travels, sometimes there is a clear goal, but most of the times is simply to follow his Si Fu, my Si Gung. And Si Mo stays here.
Believe in your own dream when no one understands or encourages it is already very difficult. But to believe in the importance of someone's dream when you can not even explain sometimes for yourself what is about the invisible importance of these trips is perhaps what the excerpt from the book Hagakure above wants to mean ... The Si Mo, was in all the trips with the Si Fu,even not physically.
Eu sou completamente fanático pela trilogia Karate Kid (esqueça o 4º filme com a menina!). E como uma criança, assisto pelo menos uma vez por semana (sério!) um dos três filmes.
O meu preferido é o "KARATE KID II". O pai do Sr. Miyagi morre, e na cena acima, seu único discípulo, Daniel Larusso(Daniel-san), é quem o conforta.(assista e se emocione ainda que não saiba inglês.).
I´m a huge, huge fan of the classic KARATE KID Trilogy! And as a child, every week (I´m talking serious!) I watch one of the three old movies(forget about the 4th with Hillary Swank!).
My favorite one is "KARATE KID II" where Miagy´s father passes away, and his only disciple, Daniel LaRusso conforts him. Watch the video above and be touched.
O discípulo sempre vai ao encontro de seu Si Fu para "pegar". Seja algum conhecimento, seja um conforto. Mas o Si Fu não é um super-herói, e onde está o mesmo discípulo nestas horas?
"...Pereira, minha 'assinatura' em eventos da Família Kung Fu, é sempre estar presente. Talvez eu seja a pessoa que mais tenha acompanhado seu Si Gung em viagens internacionais..."
The disciple always go to Si Fu. He gets a movement, a technique, and advice. But a Si Fu is not a super-hero. So, where are the same disciple when the Si Fu needs him?
"...Pereira - Si Fu Julio said to me - my signature in Kung Fu events of the Clan is that I´m always present. My there is no one who traveled more with Si Gung than me..."
Meu livro favorito é o romance de Eiji Yoshikawa "MUSASHI"(ilustrado ao lado). Num determinado momento do livro, Musashi já se sente mais confiante em sua habilidade,mas pisa em um prego no meio da rua. Seu pé infecciona. Musashi não consegue acreditar que estava tão inflado com seu ego, que não percebeu um prego no chão. Se fosse num duelo,estaria morto. Para pagar penitência a si mesmo ele escala um monte.
My favorite book is MUSASHI by Eiji Yoshikawa. And in a moment during the story, Musashi is very self-confident, but while he was walking down a street, a nail entered into his foot. So he became very impressed, that is ego make he blind to see that nail. If was a sword he was dead.
To show get away his ego, he climbed a hill.
Hoje eu posso dizer que eu amo meu Si Fu de verdade.Por mais que ele dissesse que cansou e vai parar com o Ving Tsun(rs).
Mas eu estava num dia ruim certa vez, era uma tarde de sol linda. Si Fu me levou até um certo local que posso dizer que naquele momento era seu maior sonho. Ele parou,olhou ,rodou, olhou de novo. E finalmente me perguntou: "O que você achou?"
"É, legal."- respondi.
Depois de um certo silêncio Si Fu começou a falar:
-Eu trouxe a Jade aqui e mostrei esse lugar pra ela. Aí ela não olhou, ficou olhando pra mim. E eu disse: "pô filha! Cê nem vai olhar? Sabe o que ela respondeu?" - perguntou Si Fu com um sorriso.
-Não. - respondi.
-Ela me deu um presente...Ela disse: "Pai, eu tô olhando pro brilho dos seus olhos vendo este lugar."
Today I can say that I trully love my Si Fu .Even if he said he got tired and will stop with the Ving Tsun (lol).
But I was in a bad day once even with sucj a beautiful sunny afternoon. Si Fu led me to some place wich I can say that at the moment was his greatest dream. He stopped, looked, drive a little more around, looked again. And I finally asked, "What did you think?"
"Yeah, cool." - I replied.
After a silence Si Fu began to speak:
-I brought Jade[(12G VT)his older daughter] here and showed this place for her. Then she stared just looking at me. And I said, "But my daughter! You are not even looking the place? You know what she said?" - Si Fu asked to me with a smile.
-No. - I Answered.
-She gave me a gift ... She said:" Dad, I'm staring at the sparkle in your eyes seeing this place. "
FINAL: Feliz aniversário! FINAL: Happy Birthday!
Hoje eu vejo que neste episódio, eu "pisei no prego" como no livro do MUSASHI. Estava olhando tanto pra mim que não tive a capacidade de apreciar o sonho do Si Fu junto dele.
Ip Man dizia: "O bom 'kung fu guy' , é mole por dentro e duro por fora, e duro por dentro e mole por fora."
Acho que esta é a maior lição que o Si Fu nos dá a cada ano, a cada dia, a cada momento: Mesmo em seus piores momentos, sempre cabe espaço para um sorriso seu para conosco.Abrir mão do seu cansaço,trabalho,compromisso,para estar com um To Dai. Isso é ser Si Fu.
Today I see that in this episode, I "stepped on the nail" as in the book Musashi did. 'Cause I was looking so much to mysekf that I did not had the ability to enjoy the dream of Si Fu with him.
Ip Man said: "The good 'kung fu guy', is soft inside and hard on the outside and hard inside and soft on the outside."
I think this is the greatest lesson that Si Fu gives us every year, every day, every moment: Even in his worst moments, it is always room for a smile to ourselves.And dont matter his fatigue, work or commitment, he cancels everything to be with a To Dai. This is being a Si Fu.

Na verdade entre as controversisas envolvendo Bruce Lee, graças ele muitos Mestres atuais começaram a praticar artes marciais com toda a febre que seu filmes causaram e ainda causam.
O filme abrange uma temática interessante pois fala do ponto de vista de seus familiares, e não dele apenas como um lutador invencível,etc...
A new film of Bruce Lee was released for the eternal joy for fans of the "little dragon".
Actually between controversisas involving Bruce Lee, thanks him many masters today began practicing martial arts at the time of all that fever caused by his movies and still cause.
The film covers a very interesting theme because it speaks from the point of view of his relatives, and not only about him as an invincible fighter, etc ...

Aproveitando esta oportunidade , vamos falar um pouco sobre o significado do termo "Si Taai Po".
Afinal, chamamos o Si Fu de "Si Fu", a Si Mo de "Si Mo", e Si Gung de "Si Gung" e Si Taai de "Si Taai".
Mas e "Si Taai Gung" e "Si Taai Po"? O que significa tudo isso, e porque damos tanto valor a esse entendimento?
Mas antes, recomendo a leitura de alguns posts anteriores:

Taking this opportunity, let's talk a little about the meaning of the term "Si Taai Po". After all, we call the Si Fu as "Si Fu", the Si Mo as "Si Mo", and Si Gung as "Si Gung" ,and Si Taai as " Si Taai".
But what about "Si Taai Gung " and "Si Taai Po"? What does all this, and why we give so much value to that understanding?

A cultura chinesa é interessante, pois entrelaça todos os seus campos de atuação. Você pode aprender francês sem necessariamente aprender a cultura francesa,ou o modo de pensar. No chinês, é impossível(ou talvez bem dificil) de aprender o idioma e a escrita sem que se intere sobre a cultura do país.
Chinese culture is interesting because it intertwines all its fields. You can learn French without necessarily learning the French culture, or french way of thinking. In Chinese, it is impossible (or perhaps very difficult) to learn the language and writing without the concern about this country's culture.
Confúcius (Kung Fu Zi):
Apesar da origem budista do Ving Tsun ser mais falada, como tudo na cultura chinesa, a ideologia confuciana está inserida nesta e em outras artes marciais chinesas. Disse ele: "O povo é como a grama e o governante como o vento. A grama inclina-se na direção do vento."
Isso também aplicava-se a Família chinesa, onde o mais antigo era estimado sobre o mais novo. (Para entender melhor a característica familiar chinesa leia este post: AQUI).
Confucius (Kung Fu Zi):
Despite the Buddhist origins of Ving Tsun be more widely spoken, like everything in Chinese culture, Confucian ideology is embedded in this and other Chinese martial arts. He said: "The people are like grass and the ruler is like the wind. The grass is bows when the wind blows."
This also applied to Chinese family, where the oldest was estimated on the youngest. (
Si Gung (師公) :
Si Gung é o Si Fu de seu Si Fu.
"Si"(師) - É o mesmo "Si" de : Si Hing, Si Mo, Si Fu, etc... - quer dizer algo como: "alguém mais habilidoso ou mais sábido do que você em determinado assunto". Acaba-se traduzindo como "Mestre", mas não é só isso. Porque "Si Gung" é "Si Gung" e não "mestre/avô". No fundo não há uma tradução, há um entendimento.
Gung(公) - pode ser traduzido como avô. Mas veja bem: "pode ser traduzido".
Isso porque "avô" pode ser dito de duas formas de acordo com a cultura chinesa clássica onde se preserva a posição do homem na sociedade sobre a da mulher:
O avô paterno de uma criança é considerado seu ancestral, veja: 祖父(Jo Fu). Onde "jo" é ancestral e "fu" é pai. Agora, o avô materno de uma criança, não deixa de ser seu avô, mas veja a cultura inserida na língua:
外公(Ngoi Gung) - Onde "Ngoi" (外) - significa "fora" e "Gung"(公) como já disse antes é avô.
Mas o avô por parte de mãe, é como se fosse "um avô de fora". "alguém de fora"...
Repare que "avô paterno" tem o ideograma "pai"(fu) ao invés de "avô"(gung).
Por isso "Si gung" é simplesmente ... "Si Gung".
Si Gung is the Si Fu of your Si Fu.
"Si" (師) - The "si" is the same "Si" from: Si Hing, Si, Mo, Si Fu, etc ... - I mean something like: "someone more skilled or mastered than you in a certain subject."
Ends up translating as "Master", but that's not all. Because "Gung" is "Gung" and not "teacher / grandparent." At the bottom there is a translation, there is an understanding.
Gung (公) - Can be translated as a grandfather. But you see, "can be translated."
That's because "grandpa" can be said in two ways according to the classical Chinese culture which preserves the position of men in society above the women:
The paternal grandfather of a child is considered its ancestor, see: 祖父(Jo Fu). Where "jo" is ancient and "fu" is the father. Now, the grandfather of a child, it is still your grandfather, but see the culture embedded in language:
外公 (Ngoi Gung) - Where "Ngoi (外)" - means" out " and " Gung "(公) as I said before is a grandfather.
But the grandfather on your mother's side, is like "a grandfather from outside." an "Outsider" ...
Note that "grandfather"(in the case of the father´s father) has the character "father" (fu) instead of "grandfather" (gung).
So "Si Gung" is simply ... "Si Gung".
Si Taai (師太):
Si Taai(師太) é a Si Mo do seu Si Fu. E na verdade é um dos termos mais divertidos de se descobrir.
O "Si"(師) : Bom, é o mesmo "si" de sempre..... :)
Agora "Taai"(太) é nesse caso uma abreviação de Taai Taai(太太). Que significa algo como "Madame", ou literalmente "mulher casada".
Si Taai (師太) - Seria então uma abreviação de "Si Taai Taai"(師太太). Mas como sempre, "Si Taai" é "Si Taai". Esta é apenas uma tentativa de ilustrar sob a nossa ótica de entender.
Si Taai (師太) is the Si Mo of your Si Fu. And indeed it is one of the more fun to discover.
The "Si" (師): Well, it's the same "Si" that we always talk ..... :)
Now "Taai" (太) is then an abbreviation of Taai Taai (太太). That means something like "Madam" or literally "married woman".
Si Taai (師太) - would then be an abbreviation of "Si Taai Taai (师 太太). But as always, "Si Taai" is "Si Taai. This is just an attempt to illustrate in our western understanding .
Si Taai Gung(師太公):
Si Taai Gung é o Si Gung de seu Si Fu.
Si é o mesmo "Si" de sempre...
"Gung" é o mesmo "gung" de "Si Gung" , ou seja, "avô".
Mas "Taai"(太), ainda que seja o mesmo de "Si Taai" ou "Taai Taai". É um ideograma sozinho que signigica "o maior" em inglês "the highest" ou "greatest". E Si Taai Gung (師太公) seria "bisavô".
Si Taai Gung is the Si Gung of your Si Fu.
Si is the same "Si" ever ...
"Gung" is the same "gung" of "Si Gung", or "grandfather."
But "Taai" (太), although it is the same as "Si Taai" or "Taai Taai". It is an ideogram that alone means the "greatest" ,"the highest". And Si Taai Gung (師太 公) would be "great-grandfather."
Si Taai Po(師太婆):
Si Taai Po é a Si Taai de seu Si Fu.
Si(師) é o mesmo "Si" de sempre.
Taai(太) é o mesmo de Si Taai Gung.
E "Po"(婆) é algo como "senhora" , "Mulher mais velha".
Si Taai Po(師太婆) seria apenas "Si Taai Po".
No final das contas é importante lembrar que : avô, avó, bisavô, bisavó, etc... Tem outras maneiras mais apropriadas para falar como no exemplo do Ngoi Gung e Jo Gung dado acima. E é por isso que não podemos traduzir termos de kung fu como ideogramas separados. São termos com uma lógica por detrás, muito mais do que uma tradução para o português. Si Taai Po is the Si Taai of your Si Fu.
Si (師) is the same "Si" ever.
Taai (太) is the same as Si Taai Gung.
And "Po" (婆) is something like "old woman".
Si Taai Po (师 太婆) would only "Taai Po Si".
Ultimately it is important to remember that: grandfather, grandmother, great-grandfather, great-grandmother, etc ... There are other ways more appropriate to speak as in the example of Ngoi Gung and Jo Fu given above. And that is why we can not translate terms of kung fu as separate ideograms. Are terms of a logic behind it, much more than a translation into Portuguese(or western languages). Mainly by the constant presence of the "Si" (師), which changes the entire context.

MH- ... as to apreciate more the art.
KIAI - Any trauma happened in this change?
MH- Fortunately not. Is important to remember that we are talking about something that happened about 20 years ago. I believe that today Master Jason Lau has a totally different vision of Ving Tsun. Masters and disciples has to improve themselves.
On the occasion he said: " If you have to train with another master, makes me happy to know that you will be trainning under Moy Yat. I wish happiness to you." We are friends 'till today.
KIAI - How was your meeting with Steven Seagal?
MH - He was shooting in Brooklyn, and one of the locations was exactly at a shop of one of my friends. He invited me and introduced me to Steven Seagal. During the conversation I discovered that he was very interested in Ving Tsun. Had trained by a short period.
But he said that the art did not impressed him. Said to me that the Ving Tsun was more direct and objective. So, I said somethings about the art and show him some movements. The fact is that after this conversation some hollywood actors call me interested in Ving Tsun.
KIAI - Besides Ving Tsun, what is your another activities?
MH- I have a sports shop and also managament of family business.
KIAI - What is your college graduation?
MH- Company Administration.
KIAI - And why not follow this profession?
MH- 'Cause my vocation always were martial arts. Nowadays , I teach for a small but very dedicated group. Also , I travel around the US and abroad where I make lectures , but in those cases , the number of people does not bring a good result. So, we are in front a great challenge of Martial Arts after the invasion of that in West.
KIAI - And for you, what should be the solution?
MH- The balance between the traditional and the modern.Growing? yes. But with quality. Business yes, but with a lot of honesty and critery. As the proccess has a start, it could not return. The best way to be that is respecting the interests of the both sides. The side of the disciple/athete/client and the side of the master/coach
KIAI - Speaking about social enviroment , dont you agree that the sports will put the martial arts on an another level?
MH- Without doubt. But if the people pay attention to the development of the quality of the life of the practitioner and for who searchs and acts in this world.But, there some arts like Ving Tsun that is growing exactly for not considerate the art as a sport but as a cultural legacy.
KIAI- Do you think that will be "room" for this kind of martial arts school in the future?
MH- Look, those kinds of arts are different from sports 'cause its demands from the practitioner more than a simple execution of a techinique for a high perfomance.
We also can not forget that fight is fight, competition is competition. two different things.
I think that will appear people who apreciates the real combat and will be read to get ready for the danger, but also there will be people that just compete and earn trophys and medals.
KIAI- What is the main caracteristic of Ving Tsun?
MH- The Ving Tsun System is based on the principle of the simplicity. Trought this principle there is a economy of movements and energy. the main caracteristic of Ving Tsun.In a short time, the practitioner, starts to develops phisycal and techinical skills to manifest this principle. Is interesting how the Ving Tsun System respects the own caracteristics of each practitioner. Allowing them to reach the maximum of their potential along with their own nature.Is essentially a study of sofistified movements that develops a high degree of defense. Another day, I said during a seminar that I have a conviction: "Master is not who gives the truth.He´s a way to the truth". This is the essence of Ving Tsun. Is very important to be analitical to understand and use its forms to reach the efficience.
KIAI - Master, the Jeet Kune Do has something linked to Ving Tsun?
MH- Look, when Bruce Lee came to US, he was a very dedicated Ving Tsun student. Just after being not able to keep his trainning with Ip Man, that he started to develops his own method. Indeed, every senior masters who lived at the same period of Bruce Lee, says that the Jeet Kune Do is just an expression of his Ving Tsun.

We interviewed a special international guest: Master Miguel Hernández, one of the most respected Ving Tsun masters from States. One of the top disciples of grand-Master Moy Yat. He was one of three non-chinese that the great master Moy Yat gave the title of "Senior Master 7th Degree". The anothers were Master Pete Pajil and the brazilian Master Leo Imamura.
During his brillant carrer as Ving Tsun practitioner and Ving Tsun Master, this american master descendent of Porto Rico had written and produced a lot of works about his art, between them "Mental Skills in Martial Arts". That is an excellent refference for all the martial artists whom wishes to develop the quality of the movements trough mental work.
KIAI - How your interest for martial arts began?
MH - Well, it was trough martial arts movies. At school me and my classmates had as an idol, Bruce Lee. One day, after an accident that demands for me to stay in hospital for a time, my brother Nelson brought a magazine about martial arts.That was when I figured out that the art that Bruce praticed was Ving Tsun. After sometime , I found my first master in this style and started my way in this long journey.
KIAI- Tell us a little about your first Master.
MH- Jason Lau , Ving Tsun Master from Hong Kong. He trained under grand-Master Jiu Wan, friend of my Master Moy Yat. Comparing him with another masters at the time, he was very young , and his vision about Ving Tsun was totally for combat. His personality was like a carismatic leader. Thats why everyone respected him. I stay by his side for many years , and for personal reasons, Master Lau was obligated to move to Atlanta in Gerogia. I was one of the only students that he nominated to keep his work in New York. But all the time, I felt like something was missing inside me. I had the need to increase myself.
KIAI - What were your experiences at that time of self-search?
MH- I was invited by the Taiwan Goverment for a Kuoshu competition. The Republic of China wanted to spread this sport all around the world and for the first time the tournament would be held outside the country.It would be in Hawaii without any protector. A real free-hand competition.
KIAI- So, it was not similar to the Kuoshu that we have today?
MH - Exactly.The stage was the Lei Tai model. Without strings and a cotender could push the another outside the lei tai.But for the audience this was very violent, and this kind of competition did not make success. Later, the rules were changed and protectors start to be used and the thing change.But even proving that I was very prepared phisycal and techinically I still felt that something was not there.
KIAI - So, that was when you decided to look for Moy Yat?
MH- Yes.When I was a student of Master Jason Lau , we often visited Master Moy Yat in Chinatown. We knew his fame a lot. 'Cause inside Ving Tsun, he was considered the last disciple of Ip Man who was teching a more pure Ving Tsun. even in the high level of my phisycal capacity, living with Master Moy yat, makes me figure out that I have a lot to learn.I found out an another side of Ving Tsun.Not that non-stop fighting that I was used to live within. That was something more soft , more directly, more intelectual. I mean, It was softer but a lot more eficient in pratical terms.
Indeed, was what I always search for, 'cause there was a efective system for the personal development trough the art.
KIAI - Without tournaments?
MH- Yes. The competition is a important phase inside the life of the martial artist,but it can be his final goal.By the moment that I discover this other side , I started to understand....
