15 years of "Baat Jaam Do", what has changed?

Então eu me divertia: Geralmente eu pegava minha prova e perguntava diretamente para ele - ' ...Tirou quanto D?...'

In 1998, my family was in a better living condition, and my mother decided it was time to enroll me in an English course. I declined, after all, at the age of 14, being "trapped" in a course for two hours, twice a week, would disrupt my plans for leisure in the afternoon. My mother then simply enrolled me, and a week later, you could see me there, sitting on a bench in the courtyard of a renowned English course in Taquara, West Zone of Rio. As people arrived, I tried to intuit who would be in my class. Later that day, I felt proud to have correctly identified three people who would be my classmates. One of them was a young man whom I'll call D. He seemed to exhibit all the behavior of those students who sit in the front row, make sure to get everything right, and thrive on the good grades they achieve... I'm not sure if it's still the same, but in those days, there were several people like that.
As the weeks passed, I noticed two things: firstly, that I was doing well, and along with this student, we excelled in the class. The second thing was that even if I skipped class to play arcade games in Madureira neighborhood[North Zone], nothing happened. This was because the course seemed really easy, and they didn't count absences. Furthermore, I noticed that most of the time, even with so many absences, my grades were higher than D.'s, even though he always gave his best. This made him quite upset. It seemed that the tenser he became, the worse his performance on the next test. Meanwhile, I didn't even want to be there, and perhaps the way he saw me treating the course made him even more frustrated... So, I had fun: Usually, I would take my test and ask him directly - '...What did you score, D?...'

This year marks fifteen years since I accessed the "Baat Jaam Do" Domain. We call it a "Domain" because it's a kind of territory with its own logic. When I accessed the previous Domain, "Luk Dim Bun Gwan," my Si Fu [PHOTO above] told me and my Kung Fu brother, Vladimir, that if there was a Domain that almost made him give up, it would have been that one. As he didn't provide many details, I was left with anticipation. After all, it was hard to imagine my Si Fu contemplating giving up. I went through the "Luk Dim Bun Gwan" Domain, and nothing significant happened that made me consider giving up. In fact, it became my favorite study in the entire Ving Tsun system. However, in July 2008, I couldn't have imagined the hell I was entering with my access to the "Baat Jaam Do" Domain. Years later, after a lunch at Barra Garden Mall with my Si Gung and other Kung Fu brothers, my Si Gung would have said that because Ving Tsun System is composed of different natures, it's possible that you may identify more with a particular Domain and have more difficulties with others. I listened attentively to that, closer to the end of the table, with Carlos Antunes seated across from Si Gung. I'm not quite sure what he was thinking, but I thought about "Baat Jaam Do."

As facas vão junto onde você for.

My Si Fu recently spoke to me about how content he is with his life. He shared the pleasant feeling he experiences when lying down at the end of the day, with a smile. According to him, these days, he wouldn't trade his life for anyone else's. I was pleased to hear that, even though I didn't show any reaction while driving, and we were nearly reaching our destination.
The "Baat Jaam Do" Domain seems very demanding and unyielding for people like me. There is no pointo to practice more, demonstrating greater determination... It's as if you needed to become more intelligent to perceive something that, with "free hands" you overlooked through a rough patch. Or maybe because your younger Kung Fu brother was inattentive and didn't realize you were using brute force on him. At that moment, when you're alone, the knives can bring you down. You realize that your lack of attention to details created a ceiling that didn't just limit your own development but that of all those who were technically associated with you. Perhaps the best thing to do at that moment is simply not to touch the knives. If you have responsibilities towards the Family, you can't just disappear; thus, you simply set it aside and forget the matter.
But on that day in the car, Si Fu talked about the pleasant feeling of lying down with a clear conscience. And the same applies when you haven't fulfilled your part in your Kung Fu journey. The knives go with you wherever you go. And when your heart asks, what excuse do you give?

In the world of Kung Fu, only those who choose to stay remain. There are no enrollments, absences, exams, higher or lower grades. There is only you and your conscience regarding what you have achieved with what you had access to. And in this year, marking 15 years since I accessed this Domain, I realize that I was the same age when this story of the English course took place. I've been reflecting deeply on what I've developed through the use of knives. This is because today, this understanding influences the journey of my own students.
The conclusion I arrive at is that we should let go of using patches, of only understanding superficially, and not just trying but delving deep with all our heart. One day, someone will rely on us, just as we rely on our Si Fu, and delivering 100% to that person won't be enough anymore. Those 100% will need to be worthy of being delivered. Otherwise, it's a no-go

11 YEARS OF "BAAT JAAM DO": WHAT I LEARNED[NO SPOILERS]. (11 anos de Baat Jaam Do: O que aprendi.)

(Com Julinha, 2013 - Casa do Si Fu)
(With Julinha, 2013- Si Fu´s former house)

In July 2008 I had access to the last Domain of the Ving Tsun System in a Ceremony that took place in the Barra da Tijuca neighborhood. In those days, I heard from Si Suk Ursula as we left the old Méier Studio: "So, Pereira? Ready for the last Ceremony?" -She was referring to the fact that this would be my last ceremony.

O INÍCIO:
THE BEGINNING:

It was in this room (PHOTO) that I had my first session of "Baat Jaam Do". I can say that a boy entered that domain of the System without knowing what it was about. Years later, I would become a man within that Ving Tsun System Domain. But it was not easy ...

My practice partner from day one was my dear  Kung Fu Vladimir Anchieta (photo). Next to him was always his son Daniel Anchieta (photo).
In that first session, Si Fu told us that: "... Baat Jaam Do is also an important Domain, because in it you learn to cut ... To cut what no longer serves you ... "
Si Suk Diego auxiliava Si Fu conosco, conforme vinha fazendo desde o "Luk Dim Bun Gwaan".

Often, Vlad and I were invited by Si Fu to go to his residence in Jacarepaguá (West Zone of Rio), to practice privately. Si Suk Diego assisted Si Fu with us, as he had been doing since the "Luk Dim Bun Gwaan".

That closer contact with Si Fu (PHOTO) also brought me the opportunity to know a little more about his intimacy and to get closer to his daughters. As in the case of Julinha (photo) who was still a baby.

Quase um acidente com Mestre Felipe Soares:
Almost an accident with Master Felipe Soares:

One of the first great lessons about the difference of holding a knife for hands-free practice was when I did this practice with Si Suk Felipe Soares a year after I had access to this Domain.
Although we appeared in the picture, both carrying a pair of knives, we had practiced this day with the Gwaan vs the knife and also with a real straight sword. Turns out, when it was Si Suk Felipe's turn to get the sword, I decided to use my "usual strategy" of "going foward with everything." What I did not know is the subtlety required when touching your weapon to the intercepting weapon. Whatever weight you put on too much, you tend to have your opponent's weapon turn against you naturally if he can follow it. With that, I clearly remember the tip of Si Suk's sword pressing into my throat as I was standing in front of him.
The weather grew heavy, and Si Suk with his characteristic smile asked, "Is everything all right?" "I said yes, and maybe we stopped right there."

NÃO É NA BASE DA "VONTADE".
You cannot just do it willingly.

Three years had passed (PHOTO) and I had not evolved much yet. I had not yet had access to all eight parts of the sequence and even if I had, I would not have done much with them. I still handled the knives like two little clubs and used them roughly.
I always thought that if we were committed to anything, the result would come. Well, that didn't happen with Baat Jaam Do.

I then thought it was a matter of getting intimate to this tool, but it was just more of the same. There was no use, and I still felt, even three years later, two "heavy things" in my hands.

As the years progressed, the frustration began to grow: My whole fantasy about weapons use fell apart. Si Hing Leonardo used to joke that you learn to use all weapons except "Baat Jaam Do" during its practice. (Laughter)
It was becoming increasingly clear to me, and also witnessing the difficulties of my faithful partner of "Baat Jaam Do" Vladimir (photo), that would not matter to having only the will, fiber, courage, etc ... It was essential to use our head.

A HORA DA VIRADA:
The Turn-Around Time:

In this search for answers, I was once again invited by Si Fu to practice at his home (PHOTO). This time alone, it was a very impactful experience for me, in which we could share moments that I will never forget.

His residence had changed, Julinha had grown, but our relationship was maintained. About "Baat Jaam Do", by this time, this Domain had already shown me that I would never be the great fighter I ever wanted to be. Maybe I wasn't as smart as I thought, and I was dumber than I thought. One thing was certain: I was now looking for the least to pass on the legacy.
My focus has shifted completely to a transmission process and no longer just for me.
Quando puder você me dá!

Eight years after my access to the "Baat Jaam Do" domain, my pair of knives were on the table of a restaurant in Barra da Tijuca (PHOTO). It was a Saturday night of October 2016. I was already a Si Fu now. And as our Family tradition dictates, I'd use the knives now to cut the cake.
This pair of knives was brought by Si Fu from China, and I only got them, because Vlad lent me the money at the time to buy them. He said, "That's it my brother! You can't be without! When you can give the money back to me! Who knows when we'll have another chance to buy a pair of those!" - I could not refuse the loan.

O QUE APRENDI:
What I learned:
Procura viver...Curtir a experiência.

Eleven years after that night of 2008 when I started my practice with Vlad. I was with Si Fu and Si Suk Homero doing a study this morning. And well, if you asked me what changed the most about me during this time studying "Baat Jaam Do", I would say it was my "look". I exchanged that silly, lost look for a more focused look. But today, Si Fu's request made me realize that I still have one more thing to learn: "Try to relax, Thiago ... Try to enjoy the moment ... Enjoy the experience. Don't charge yourself so much for the transmission ..." - He said followed by a question for me: "You know what you are going to have lunch in three years? But you know today, don't you? So ... Enjoy today ... Enjoy the moment as a practitioner, not as Si Fu . "
