Learning to work with the Ving Tsun Experience Programme

"Estamos aqui não para aprender nada novo, mas para lembrarmos do que esquecemos."-  Foi com essa frase misteriosa que o meu Si Gung, Grão-Mestre Leo Imamura, começou uma das incríveis aulas de imersão do dedicado praticante Gino, que estou acompanhando como segundo ou terceiro assistente. Após essa frase, Si Gung deixou Gino ter a oportunidade de vivenciar o processo de recordar o que acabara de ver no Siu Nim Do. O componente a ser trabalhado naquele dia era o 1.1 do Programa Ving Tsun Experience. Confesso que nunca imaginei de fato como poderia trabalhar em alto nível esse componente, que tem como intencionalidade estratégica o enraizamento da base provocado pelo cruzamento descendente de braços. Também não compreendia a satisfação que Si Gung tem com o potencial do Programa Ving Tsun Experience. Sempre respeitei, achava que entendia, mas esta semana percebi que estava longe disso. Também pude perceber na prática o quanto apenas o seminário não é suficiente para alcançar o alto nível de entrega que o Programa propõe. Por isso, servir de assistente é fundamental. Começamos com um pré-evento, fazendo o trabalho entre os tutores, e depois atuamos com o praticante. É uma aula silenciosa; quase nada é dito, apenas perguntas são feitas e o praticante fala mais sobre suas percepções. Eu costumava apenas pensar que o Edson era um virtuoso e dedicado praticante, porém, ao observar o Gino e ter a mesma impressão, entendi que o nível do trabalho é tão alto que as pessoas constroem seu Kung Fu de maneira muito sólida, e uma hora pareceu pouco para este componente do Programa.

“We are not here to learn anything new, but to remember what we have forgotten.” It was with this mysterious phrase that my Si Gung, Grandmaster Leo Imamura, began one of the incredible immersion classes of the dedicated practitioner Gino, whom I am assisting as a second or third assistant. After this phrase, Si Gung allowed Gino the opportunity to experience the process of recalling what he had just seen in the Siu Nim Do. The component to be worked on that day was 1.1 of the Ving Tsun Experience Programme. I confess that I never truly imagined how to work at a high level with this component, which strategically aims to root the base through the descending crossing of arms. I also did not understand the satisfaction that Si Gung has with the potential of the Ving Tsun Experience Programme. I always respected it and thought I understood, but this week I realised I was far from it. I also saw in practice how just the seminar is not sufficient to achieve the high level of delivery that the Programme proposes. That’s why being an assistant is crucial. We began with a pre-event, working among the tutors, and then we worked with the practitioner. It is a silent class; almost nothing is said, only questions are asked, and the practitioner speaks more about their perceptions. I used to think that Edson was a virtuoso and dedicated practitioner, but observing Gino and having the same impression made me realise that the level of work is so high that people build their Kung Fu in a very solid manner, and one hour seemed too little for this component of the Programme.

Além dessas aulas com Gino, há também as aulas com outras pessoas, bem como a possibilidade de acompanhar pré-eventos de aulas que acontecerão. Eu fico um mês sem ver a pessoa e não consigo acreditar em quão boa ela já está. Casos como o do Si Suk Vede, acho que ele nem se dá conta disso. E todos, sem exceção, que interagem com Si Gung em seu dia a dia, são muito sérios e dedicados. Em um ambiente assim, não há espaço para comparações, pois é tudo uma questão de se manter conectado e atento a tudo o que está acontecendo a todo momento. Quem "dorme", fica para trás.

“Já ouviu que quando o discípulo está pronto, o mestre aparece?” - Perguntou Si Gung, rindo, enquanto voltava para seu lugar de onde conduz as aulas em um outro grau de transmissão que chamamos de "Interpessoal Indireto". E prosseguiu: “Eu acho que quando o mestre está pronto, o discípulo aparece...” - concluiu. Pelo que entendi, Si Gung estava dizendo que muitas vezes o mestre deseja um discípulo diferenciado, mas não está preparado para recebê-lo. “Por isso que é tão importante estudar...” - comenta ele nessas ocasiões.

Acompanhar o Si Gung no dia a dia me faz viver na prática uma leveza muito grande, pois me sinto livre de “buscar sentido nas coisas”. O coração fica leve, pois não fico questionando mentalmente o que está sendo dito. Lembro-me então que o Professor François Jullien teria escrito que, na lógica clássica chinesa, não há uma busca por sentido como no modelo grego. Existe apenas uma coerência profunda. Observar os impactantes resultados em questão de 72 horas, como no caso do Gino, que faz uma aula por dia, é algo inacreditável e me fez perceber que existe um Programa Ving Tsun Experience que eu nunca fui capaz de oferecer.

In addition to these classes with Gino, there are also classes with other people, as well as the opportunity to attend pre-events for upcoming classes. I might go a month without seeing someone, and I can hardly believe how good they have become. Cases like Si Suk Vede’s—I don’t think he even realises how good he became. And everyone, without exception, who interacts with Si Gung in his daily routine is very serious and dedicated. In such an environment, there is no room for comparisons, as it is all about staying connected and attentive to everything happening at all times. Those who "sleep" fall behind.

“Have you heard that when the disciple is ready, the master appears?” — Si Gung asked, laughing, as he returned to his place from where he conducts the classes in another level of transmission that we call "Indirect Interpersonal". He continued: “I think that when the master is ready, the disciple appears...” — he concluded. From what I understood, Si Gung was suggesting that often the master desires a distinguished disciple but is not prepared to receive them. “That’s why it is so important to study...” — he comments on these occasions.

Following Si Gung daily gives me a profound sense of lightness, as I feel free from "searching for meaning in things." My heart feels light, as I am not mentally questioning what is being said. I then recall that Professor François Jullien wrote that, in classical Chinese logic, there is no search for meaning as in the Greek model. There is only a deep coherence. Observing the remarkable results within just 72 hours, as with Gino, who attends a class every day, is incredible and made me realise that there is a Ving Tsun Experience Programme that I have never been capable of offering.

A emoção de perceber alguém construindo seu Kung Fu ao vivo na sua frente tem mexido muito comigo. Nessas horas, fico refletindo sobre quando serei capaz de promover uma experiência tão rica como esta para quem servir de assistente para mim. “Deixa o tempo dizer a hora certa” — comentou Si Gung sobre outro assunto. Andar com Si Gung me rendeu boas risadas devido aos comentários que ele faz, como quando estávamos no trânsito intenso e eu o avisei de um carro que ele já tinha visto: “Você acha que eu não vi?” — perguntou ele em um tom de voz que misturava calma e consternação. Minha ação foi tão inadequada que tudo o que pude fazer foi rir. “Para andar comigo, você precisa conseguir olhar para onde eu estou olhando...” — teria dito ele.

Acho que, em algum nível, tenho conseguido apreciar o trabalho do Programa Ving Tsun Experience depois de tantos anos. No final destes dias aqui em São Paulo, tenho escutado sempre “Allowed to Be Happy” do Gustavo Santaolalla. Acho que é um sentimento renovado de amor pelas artes marciais que estou experimentando. Se eu fechar os olhos, posso me sentir tão empolgado quanto eu era enquanto iniciante em 2002, 2003 e 2004... E acho que não sou apenas eu que me sinto assim. Pois, em um mundo onde as pessoas verbalizam a palavra “gratidão” de uma maneira irresponsável, ao final dos momentos com Si Gung, ninguém fala em gratidão, mas você sabe que, de alguma maneira, é o que todos nós estamos sentindo.

The emotion of witnessing someone building their Kung Fu live in front of me has had a profound effect on me. At such moments, I find myself reflecting on when I will be able to provide such a rich experience for those who assist me. “Let time tell the right moment,” Si Gung commented on another subject. Spending time with Si Gung has given me many laughs due to his remarks, such as when we were in heavy traffic, and I pointed out a car that he had already seen: “Do you think I didn’t see it?” — he asked in a tone that mixed calm and mild exasperation. My action was so misplaced that all I could do was laugh. “To be with me, you need to be able to see where I am looking...” — he would have said.

I think that, on some level, I have come to appreciate the work of the Ving Tsun Experience Programme after so many years. At the end of these days here in São Paulo, I have been listening repeatedly to “Allowed to Be Happy” by Gustavo Santaolalla. I believe it is a renewed sense of love for martial arts that I am experiencing. If I close my eyes, I can feel as excited as I was as a beginner in 2002, 2003, and 2004... And I think I’m not the only one who feels this way. In a world where people use the word “gratitude” in an irresponsible manner, at the end of moments with Si Gung, no one explicitly talks about gratitude, but you know that, in some way, it is what we are all feeling.
