GAANG SAU [耕手]: How to use it to improve quality of life.

[Patriarca Moy Yat demonstra o GAANG SAU 耕手 durante palestra]
[Patriarch Moy Yat shows the GAANG SAU 耕手 during a seminar]

There is a “body device” in the third part of Siu Nim Tau called “GAANG SAU [耕手]”. Some people call it “technique”. The important thing for me is that we can observe that the “Gaang Sau [耕手]” appears in the third part of the movement sequence [also called “form”]. It doesn't appear in the first or the second part. And that might mean something. After all, even if you understand that there is more than one “Taan Sau [攤手]” in Siu Nim Tau, none of them are the same.
[Patriarca Moy Yat mostra o “Taan Sau [攤手]” executado
após o  “Gaang Sau [耕手]” no Siu Nim Tau]

[Patriarch Moy Yat shows “Taan Sau [攤手]” performed
after “Gaang Sau [耕手]” in Siu Nim Tau]

We note that one of the "Taan Sau [攤手]" in the third part of Siu Nim Tau, occurs just after the performance of "Gaang Sau [耕手]". Right after setting up the “Taan Sau [攤手]”, we will do other moves that are completely different from other parts of the sequence. With this, we can understand the idea that in the so-called “Chinese Classical Thought”, the “1=3”. That is, each thing that happens has three distinct moments: A movement that precedes it, the movement itself and the movement that follows. And maybe it's by looking at what comes before and what comes after that we can get better meaningful clues about how to express a movement.

[Walking with my Si Fu in the capital of Luxembourg in Europe]

To[徒]” do termo  [“ To Dai 徒弟”], significa sozinho “caminhar”. Porém, ao adicionarmos o radical de “duas pessoas” [彳], podemos entender então o “To[徒]” do termo  [“ To Dai 徒弟”] como “caminhar junto”.

So you can see me having a curious experience when I'm with my Si Fu, especially when traveling internationally and we're on a very tight schedule. Because at times like this, he tends to walk very fast, and keeping up with him doesn't seem like an easy task.
Si Fu is the person you chose in the world of Chinese martial arts, for you to follow. Therefore, you are considered a “follower”[ To Dai 徒弟] . This happens because the radical “To”[走] of the ideogram with the same sound as “To[徒]” of the term [“To Dai 徒弟”], alone means “to walk”. However, by adding the stem of “two people” [彳], we can then understand the “To[徒]” of the term [“To Dai 徒弟”] as “walking together”. But “walking together” until when? Until becoming a “Dai[弟]”, a “walking brother” even if “less experienced”, as the ideogram suggests.

[Walking with my Si Fu in the capital of Luxembourg in Europe]

Sometimes, when walking with my Si Fu, I was walking faster than him. In those moments, he would touch my shoulder and ask: "Pereira, don't you want to walk with me?" or even “Pereira, don't you want to go slower?”. - These were questions that helped me to become aware, that even walking beside someone, it is very easy to keep our pace, forget about the person, and disconnect us. On other occasions, I needed to walk fast to reach him in a situation that needed greater speed. Or even driving on the way to the airport or some event, Si Fu has said on several occasions: "Pereira, speed up or we'll be late!" - And in those moments, I could understand a little better the idea of getting out of our normal pattern, to connect with an urgent situation.

So when we do the “Gaang Sau [耕手]” of the third part of Siu Nim Tau. Our hand moves off the Mid center line to cover a lower spot [PHOTO]. As it is the third part, it seems to me that the sequence[form] at this point says that something urgent has happened and we need to go there, with “Gaang Sau [耕手]” being our best option. Not only for being able to cover this point, but for having unfolded from one “Taan Sau [攤手]” and unfolded into another “Taan Sau [攤手]”. Therefore, the “Gaang Sau [耕手]”, helps us to understand [among other possibilities] that in emergency situations, we may have to act with what we have, when it is necessary and without excuses. Thus, we will return to a better structure [represented by the return to the mid-center line] as soon as possible after solving the situation in question.

The point for me is that not everything should be an “emergency”. Because when we use “Gaang Sau [耕手]”, it reaches its peak when we are already at the height of our thigh. Despite this, it was somewhat functional during transit from the Middle Center Line untill there. On the other hand, when we return to the “Taan Sau [攤手]” , we will observe that there is a delicate transition [PHOTO] in which the “Taan Sau [攤手]” is not yet configured and therefore functional. In this way, we would not have an “emergency” situation, but I would say of “urgency” to retake the middle center line.

(Si Fu holds the umbrella for Si Gung as we walk towards the restaurant
where we will have lunch at New York Street in São Paulo).

So when we elect one person to be our Si Fu. We are willing to increase or decrease the steps in order to walk with him. In doing so, we get out of our own nature, and connect not with what we “want” but with what we “should”. And by dedicating ourselves to this, we can better appreciate the perspective that the “Gaang Sau [耕手]” of the third part of Siu Nim Tau gives us that not everything in life is an “emergency”.
By relaxing, we can stop ourselves from panicking and notice more clearly the difference between “emergency” and “urgency”.
All you need to do then is walk more with your Si Fu and do more Siu Nim Tau. Results show up over time.

Becoming “Daai Si Hing”: Master Leonardo Reis gives back and makes the difference

This is the second article I have published in a short period of time, about Saturday practices at the residence of my Si Hing Leonardo Reis. This happens, not for lack of other issues, but because these moments have made a difference for those who are present. Indirectly, I know that those who prefer to abstain will benefit indirectly in the future as well.
Due to things to do, my Saturday mornings were compromised in the month of July, but due to the unity of the group. Quickly everyone agreed to temporarily transfer practices to Friday mornings because of me.

Si Hing Leonardo has been consistent all these years with his first quest, which was the passion for martial arts and later, the study of the simple nuances of the Ving Tsun System. With this, he has managed to inspire people like me, to resume the practice for the simple pleasure of seeking the depth of each movement and not for the sense of duty of transmission.
With that, I thought it was good to take my To Dai on one of these Saturdays to practice with him too. In the photo, we see my Si Hing Leonardo with my disciple Rodrigo Caputo. Both are “Daai Si Hing” in their own Families within the same Clan. This makes this a curious photo.

Doing what we love also takes work and effort. Waking up early and moving from the North Zone to the West Zone is not always simple, due to the accumulated fatigue. But I've been developing a feeling of great urgency lately. I've had a clearer notion that missed opportunities don't repeat themselves, and the pain we carry with wrong choices doesn't have an easy price to pay. For this reason, I also have the intuition that these meetings of ours are a small cut between one cycle and another. After all, we're right in the middle of Si Fu's departure for the US and something else that hasn't started there or here yet... Not at least in the apparent field of things.

Much of what is happening is also due to Roberto Viana [top right corner]. He encouraged everyone to participate and continued to attend even when others didn't seem interested. Finally, understanding the value of what has been shared, ended up causing Claudio Teixeira [foreground] to take his daughter Maria Alice [photo]. And so the group gradually increases.

For me it has been very special because in these moments I am not a “Si Fu” or “Master Thiago”. I'm just a guy who is trying to exchange experiences with his kung fu brothers. Most of the time in silence.
We have been reflecting on how our Family has been moving away from the practice over the past few years. And who would say, that exactly the initial reason that moves us to the practice of a martial art like Ving Tsun seemed to be so tiring for some?

So, the merit of these moments that a small group has lived on Saturday or Friday mornings is only because of  the Daai Si Hing. He who has often felt a bit apart for not having an inclination to participate in the organization of many of the events we've had from 2017 until now. He can finally start showing everything he knows, when all you can't do are events with big crowds, all that's left is to go back to the beginning of everything: The honest desire to practice.
So Leonardo Reis becomes the “Daai Si Hing” not only because of his antiquity. But when this strange emptiness arose, he becomes the “Daai Si Hing” that is the center of the Family.

#TBT June 28, 2019

Article originally written on June 28, 2019 on the Blog of the MJLO Clan.

It had a wonderful weather, and sunshine that penetrated incredibly through the glass front door where there was a sticker written "Moy Yat Institute". This Friday afternoon began in São Paulo. I was surrounded by dear people, I accompanied my Si Fu, my Dai Ji accompanied us, and I felt full. You know, there's nothing like being with people you love and living something you love. And there, all of a sudden, I received news that took me by surprise! And it was in this sea of feelings, time of happiness, time of anguish. That I saw myself living this June 28th.
I became aware that in fact when you want something, your desire will not make you able to do want you want .. I was in São Paulo, I couldn't be present where I wanted to be at that moment...But something had to be done...

Arriving at the hotel at the end of the day, I played arcade with my disciples Caroline and Luiz[ And I think that as this was a day of strong emotions, by a good coincidence, it was my favorite arcade game: "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles"(1989 )] - Si Fu had given me an orientation when we got off the Uber and I believe that I did well. Before that, however, a lot happened!

I was able to take a very relaxed walk with Si Fu to the Manhattan bakery. We've walked up this street together countless times, heading towards the same bakery, and today I felt light and relaxed with Si Fu. We were talking about the present and the future. Right behind, in addition to the entourage of the Moy Jo Lei Ou Clan, the Moy Lin Mah and Moy Ke Lo Si Family Leaders , followed us along with some disciples.

Today I also had the opportunity to meet Si Baak Gung John Tsang (photo) for the first time. A serious man, with few words and a deep understanding of "Feng Shui".
It was very special to observe and hear his different explanations and performances of rites referring to the line of "Feng Shui" that follows. I had never witnessed these procedures so closely.

For a martial arts romantic like me, stepping into the Moy Yat Institute is like walking on a real dream. The house is simply magnificent and if you ask me what I liked the most, I'd say it's from the front yard where the "Geuk Jong" (photo) and other instruments are.
The sun beats there very pleasantly, and a light breeze doesn't let you feel too hot. It's a place that has a very good energy, and has a very friendly atmosphere.
E coube a mim, pedir a meu discípulo que me representasse onde desejava estar.

It's true that I could say that we ended the night with dinner or playing arcades in the hotel lobby, but I prefer to leave the image of Si Fu moving in his speech as the final image of this very impactful day. I believe that an image like this and all the different feelings that I carried with me from the start of that day, make me understand once again that in the end, it's as if at each milestone we were always starting over. Like the rookies we once were.
Apparently, these are the days of high adventures... And it was up to me to ask my disciple to represent me where I wanted to be.

From the struggle to happiness: the daughters of Master Julio Camacho.

(Jocko Willink).

“…There is a Path… And you know which Path it is and what you should be doing. And it is difficult to stay on this Path as it is a Path of discipline and discomfort, but it is the 'Right Path' and you know it. And this is the Path that will lead you where you ultimately want to be, so that you can live and die without regrets .. ”(Jocko Willink).

We recently received a lightning visit from my Si Mo[師母] and we were able to meet her at the international airport of Rio de Janeiro[PHOTO]. And her visit had as its main objective, to accompany Si Fu's youngest daughter to the US.
I left Mo Gun in the Meier district with some of my students and arrived at the airport reasonably early, despite it being a Friday night. I had also been on the night of Jade's [Si Fu's oldest daughter] departure a few months earlier.

By the time Jade tried to board[first photo above], documentation was pending, and she had to go home. I was pretty frustrated at that point. So when Julia's turn came, I was quite apprehensive. After all, because of this whole pandemic issue, the process of entering the US has become even more delicate. So I followed closely Si Mo and Julia in the departure area, and it took long minutes until the authorization from the airline and immigration gave the 'OK'.

I saw Jade a few times right after Si Fu left for the US. She, Julia and I drove back from the airport to their house. Due to the noght time, I asked Jade not to drive so slowly or stop at any traffic sign. At one point she thought it would be better if I drove her car. In addition, I sometimes noticed that Jade was very careful with COVID-19, as she was constantly  with her grandparents.
So I was very happy when Jade boarded, both because she could spend a lot of time in a not so violent place and she could also get vaccinated [photo].

When Julia boarded, there was no doubt that she would be able to get vaccinated [PHOTO] too and that she would have good times with her family. In the case of her boarding, I thought more about Si Fu and how happy he would be. After all, he had just gone through a pretty serious surgical procedure, and the presence of his two daughters, his mother and Si Mo. They would probably bring him moments of happiness.

Then on US Independence Day which takes place on the 4th of July. Si Fu came up with the idea of the “four of Julio”[Because 'July' in portuguese sounds the same as 'Julio']. The four women who have been giving him all the support in this moment of full recovery of his health. In fact, the maturing of his daughters, especially Julia, catches his attention. Because being a teenager, perhaps the expected was that she was giving him more problems. However, on the contrary, she supports him with her sister Jade.

Many said how lucky Si Fu had to live in the US while he had this health problem, as he was able to receive care that perhaps in Brazil was not possible for him. Before that, they said he was lucky to be living in the US and to be able to get both doses of vaccine quickly. The truth is that many people, having just moved to another country and discovering that a global pandemic had started, would return to their countries of origin immediately.
Living under a coherence that is sometimes almost incomprehensible, Si Fu believed in the Path he had chosen to walk. He didn't know what lay ahead. Finally, there was the possibility of vaccinating his two daughters, living with his mother for six months... Then he reflected: “...When your decisions, however unusual they may seem, make the most important people in your life possible, what matters most...”.

And after exactly 505 days of waiting for moments like this [photo]... Whether it's discipline or commitment, which gives someone the ability to follow one´s Path, no matter how difficult or uncomfortable it may be, only one thing is certain: In the case of SiFu: “it was always a matter og luck”.

Todos do círculo marcial chinês do Brasil conhecem a Mestra Senior Ursula Lima.

Everyone from the Chinese martial arts circles in Brazil knows Senior Master Ursula Lima. In recent days, members of the general society  were also able to hear a little more of South America's first Ving Tsun Master through a series of public appearances. And in one of these media appearances, Master Ursula was interviewed by the proficient Brazilian tv host Gardenia Cavalcanti, on the show “Vem com a Gente”.
Gardenia Cavalcanti runs this attraction on the Brazilian TV channel Bandeirantes. The show has a light and relaxed feel, and it was no different on the day one of the most famous Kung Fu Masters on the planet made her appearance.
In the text below, a student of Master Ursula Lima who accompanied her on the occasion, shares his vision and learning about this very significant moment that he lived with his mentor.
At a time when society's recognition of the importance of women in different aspects is increasingly important, Master Ursula Lima and Gardenia Cavalcanti serve as an example that everything is possible to do with art: Including being an interviewee or an interviewer.

The following article was written by our correspondent Vitor Antonio.

Bastidores de algo maior.
[Behind the scenes of something bigger. ]

During moments of practice and Kung Fu Life I've had with my Master Ursula Lima, I've heard her talk several times about the ability to “see the invisible”, or that is, seeing the hidden details of things and relationships. And because she invited me to accompany her on her participation in the Band Channel's 'Come with us' show, I could see up close for the first time a little of the “invisible” that makes up a TV show.

[With a cozy atmosphere, the program “Vem com a Gente” leaves the guests relaxed].

At the time, my Master was invited to talk about overcoming difficulties, and during the program showed her insight into how Ving Tsun can help people overcome wars they face every day. In a mix of an interview with a relaxed conversation, the host Gardenia Cavalcanti conducted the theme between Master Ursula and the other guest, the actor Marcos Oliveira, ending with a meal prepared by a chef during the show.

As a guest of my Master, I was able to stay backstage watching the program together with the show's producer and my practicing partner André Vilarreal. It was very interesting to be able to see how many details, big and small, that we usually don't notice when we're in the on the other side of the screen, they need to be prepared and in tune for the program to flow properly, such as the script, the distribution of cameras, the setting, the moments of pause… before, during and after recording a lot can change, mainly because to be a work with people and for people.

Leaving and heading to MYVT Copacabana School after the recording was over, I thought about reflexes that audiovisual dissemination can bring, as has already happened in large proportions in our art before, with Bruce Lee and cinema for example. It's easy to associate the reflexes to the achievements of a martial artist, when we think about anticipation, execution and reflection that your process generates for yourself and for others who see the hidden of your actions. And being in a Kung Fu Family, for me, is always like being behind the scenes of something bigger

Re-signifying the relationship: Saturday practices with Daai Si Hing [

[Espresso in the end of the Saturday practices with Daai Si Hing [

You've heard of “Si Hing”[師兄], which is a term from the martial arts circles that bears the ideogram “Si”[師]. This ideogram comes with another ideogram that assigns it a function: “Hing”[兄]. The character “Hing”[兄] means “Elder Brother”. And precisely because it carries the ideogram “Si”[師], we know that it is an “Older Brother” different from what we often have in our own families. After all, in the case of a “Si Hing”[師兄], he is called that, as he would be preparing to receive you long before he met you. He was already accompanying your Si Fu before you arrived. Also, regardless of whether he is biologically older or younger than you, for the martial arts circles, this is irrelevant.
“Si Hing”[師兄] should not be a title, “Si Hing”[師兄] is a position in the family tree of a Kung Fu Family. It's like when even being immature, your parents decide to have one more child. You then become a big brother just because you were born first. The difference is that in the martial arts circles, you call this person “Si Hing”[師兄]. You just have to ask yourself if you're calling on automatic, or if you actually understand the Kung Fu dimension of this relationship.

Me and my “Si Hing”[師兄] were titled as Masters on the same day[photo], even though he was already in a position to do so before me. For some reason, Si Fu thought it would be a good idea for us to do this together. We are only a year apart in joining the Kung Fu Family, but due to our age difference, he already joined as a  man while I was just a boy.
As the oldest of all in activity, we not only call him just as “Si Hing”[師兄], but Daai Si Hing [大師兄]. Note that “Daai”[ 大] means “Big”. So Daai Si Hing [ 大師兄 ], is the “elder brother of the older brothers”. So this seems to me a rather lonely position. And it is because I understand this, that being the “Number 2” of the Family, I make a point of calling him “Si Hing”[師兄]. Because I don't have the opportunity to call anyone else this way in the daily life of the Kung Fu Family.
Daai Si Hing [ 大師兄 ] e Claudio.
The Daai Si Hing [ 大師兄 ] and Claudio.

There was a tv show when I was a child, which was called “Captain Planet”. Each of the five heroes had a ring with powers of nature. When they united their powers, the "Captain Planet" appeared. My favorite character was Wheeler who had the power of fire. One of the characters had the power of "heart" and I found it very boring.
More than twenty years later, when we were at the dinner celebrating our Masters degree, someone said that Si Hing was the “Fist” of the Moy Jo Lei Ou Family and I would be the “heart”. What an irony of fate, isn't it? I wanted to be "the fist"...[Laughs]
Despite that, I gladly accepted the invitation to join Cláudio Teixeira and Roberto Viana, in the practices coordinated by Daai Si Hing [大 師兄] at his residence. We then spend two hours every Saturday morning to practice with each other, under his supervision.
[Me and Claudio after a morning of practice]

Observar o Daai Si Hing [ 大師兄 ] praticando e falando do Sistema é sempre desconcertante.

Everything I know and have developed about the System [including my motivation] I attribute to my transmission process. Having the responsibility of transmitting the System to other people always led me to dedicate myself to understand more and more what I was doing, in order to always be able to offer the best I could. I believed that only by diligently dedicating oneself to a transmission process could one reach the highest level.
Observing the Daai Si Hing [ 大師兄 ] practicing and speaking of the System is always disconcerting. He's always helped out at Mo Gun whenever he can, but he's perhaps the only person I've met in 22 years of uninterrupted practice, who has come to such a deep level of understanding through a mostly intrapersonal process.

[Daai Si Hing, Claudio e Roberto]
[Daai Si Hing, Claudio and Roberto]

However, despite all the technical improvements we are having under his supervision and the possibility to practice freely without worrying about pass down the system to anyone for two hours a week. The high point of these moments are more associated with a redefinition of the relationship.
With the absence of Si Fu, we are organically coming closer. And sometimes Daai Si Hing [大師兄] gets upset with people who declined the invitation to be in this group for no good reason. But I think everyone has their time. And speaking of time: How much time do we still have, to always leave it for later?
