Demorei a comprar a passagem para Brasilia, e até sentar em um ônibus que me levaria por 20 horas da cidade do Rio de Janeiro até a capital do Brasil, não estava acreditando que faria realmente isso. Dentro de mim, sabia que deveria ir, a razão, desconheço. É como se eu estivesse seguindo um roteiro de um episódio de uma série, e se fosse uma série, eu estava vestido a caráter: Com uma camisa de flanela quadriculada em preto e vermelho e um boné da Marinha que havia ganhado de um querido irmão Kung Fu e uma mochila a tiracolo, bem que eu podia me passar por algum personagem.  Pouco antes do ônibus sair, um irmão Kung Fu me perguntou porque eu estava fazendo aquilo, afinal seriam 20 horas de viagem, eu não sabia responder.  Porém, se por um lado os filósofos buscam um sentido nas coisas, como diz o Professor Fraçois Jullien, o Pensamento Clássico Chinês que parte de uma lógica diferente da dos filósofos do ocidente, se contrapõe a busca por sentido nas coisas, por uma capacidade de perceber as evidencias da circunstancia. Portanto, quando Si Gung teria dito: “...Acho que vai valer a pena você ir, pois será muito intimista...” – Eu não cogitei se era “verdade” ou não, como também poderia sugerir a filosofia. Mais uma vez citando o Professor François Jullien, estava mais focado na contraparte disso proposta pelo renomado sinólogo: A "congruência". Esta diz respeito a um congruente que convém perfeitamente a uma situação dada. Então, como evidencia, eu tinha toda a dedicação sem limites do Grão Mestre Leo Imamura , meu Si Gung, a cada tarefa que ele se dispõe a preparar e executar. Não houve uma oportunidade desde nossa aproximação mais intensa nos últimos anos que não tenha sido assim. E como elemento congruente, havia o Mestre Quintela...

I took a long time to buy the ticket to Brasília, and until I sat on the bus that would take me for 20 hours from Rio de Janeiro to the capital of Brazil, I couldn't believe I was actually doing this. Deep down, I knew I should go; the reason, I do not know. It was as if I were following a script for an episode of a TV series, and if it were a series, I was dressed for the part: wearing a black and red checked flannel shirt and a navy cap that I had received from a dear Kung Fu brother, along with an old bag. I could easily have passed for some character.

Just before the bus departed, a Kung Fu brother asked me why I was doing this, as it would be a 20-hour journey. I couldn't answer. However, while philosophers seek meaning in things, as Professor François Jullien states, classical Chinese thought, which operates on a different logic from that of Western philosophers, counters the quest for meaning by emphasising the ability to perceive the evidence of circumstances. Therefore, when Si Gung said, “I think it will be worth your while to go, as it will be very intimate...” – I did not consider whether it was “true” or not, as philosophy might suggest. Once again quoting Professor François Jullien, I was more focused on the counterpart proposed by the renowned sinologist: "congruence". This refers to something that perfectly suits a given situation.

So, as evidence, I had the unwavering dedication of Grandmaster Leo Imamura, my Si Gung, in every task he undertakes to prepare and execute. There has not been an opportunity, since our more intense connection in recent years, that has not been like this. And, as a congruent element, there was Master Quintela...

Fui recebido pelos discípulos do Mestre Quintela na rodoviária. Talvez tenha sido o primeiro caso de "jet lag" no mesmo fuso horário que se tem notícia. Eu caminhava com Nathalia e Paternostro, mas meu cérebro parecia não perceber que eu realmente estava ali. Naquele momento, lembrei do Si Suk André Cardoso. Eu costumava me comprometer com viagens da Família Kung Fu e sempre desmarcava em cima da hora. Numa dessas, deixei o Si Suk André na rodoviária esperando. Eu tinha uns 17 anos e gostava muito dele. Havia desistido de ir, mas, sem coragem de falar com ele, pedi à minha mãe que falasse no meu lugar. Aqueles eram os tempos de altas aventuras em 2001, e 23 anos depois acreditei que tinha pago essa dívida com essa viagem.

Fui recebido na casa do Mestre Quintela com um abraço e o sorriso dele e de sua esposa, a querida Sra. Gaby Quintela. Ambos me receberam com muito carinho, e eu imediatamente soube que toda a ambiência subjetiva criada pelo Mestre Quintela, sua esposa e sua família seria o elemento congruente que validaria as evidências de que, de fato, como o Si Gung teria dito: “Valeria muito a pena eu ter ido”. Que bom que segui para onde o coração apontava.

I was welcomed by the disciples of Master Quintela at the bus station. Perhaps it was the first case of "jet lag" in the same time zone on record. I was walking with Nathalia and Paternostro, but my brain seemed unable to register that I was really there. At that moment, I remembered Si Suk André Cardoso. I used to commit to trips with the Kung Fu Family and would always cancel at the last minute. On one occasion, I left Si Suk André waiting at the bus station. I was about 17 years old and liked him a lot. I had decided not to go, but without the courage to tell him, I asked my mother to speak on my behalf. Those were the high adventures days in 2001, and 23 years later, I believed I had paid that debt with this trip.

I was welcomed at Master Quintela's home with a hug and smiles from him and his wife, the dear Mrs Gaby Quintela. They both received me with great warmth, and I immediately knew that the entire subjective atmosphere created by Master Quintela, his wife, and his family would be the congruent element that validated the evidence that, in fact, as Si Gung would have said, “It would be well worth my while to have come.” How wonderful that I followed where my heart pointed.

Estaríamos ali reunidos durante todo o final de semana, em função de um instrumento chamado “Visita Oficial”. Ao longo dos anos, eu organizei várias vezes esse instrumento com as melhores intenções, mas acredito que nunca tenha de fato organizado a Visita enquanto instrumento do Programa. E, na busca por compreender melhor do que se trata, participei do mesmo evento quando ocorreu na Família do Mestre Felipe, e agora estava ali na mesma busca de compreensão com a Família do Mestre Quintela.

A “Visita Oficial” não se trata do Mestre da pessoa visitar sua Família Kung Fu. Ela promove uma oportunidade inovadora em que o próprio praticante, vinculado ao Pólo de Acesso, pode proporcionar “Vida Kung Fu” através das atividades propostas, para, como diz o Professor François Jullien em “A Propensão das Coisas”, criar oportunidades que ativem propensões que permitam a esse praticante refletir sobre a importância da Vida Kung Fu. Assim, o Si Gung não espera que sua recepção, bem como as atividades, sejam perfeitas. Ele ajuda os praticantes a entenderem a programação como um sistema de variação e se entrega completamente para viver qualquer situação que surgir da programação, sempre com toda a paciência do mundo. É realmente inspiradora a sua dedicação com seus descendentes.

We would be gathered there throughout the weekend for an initiative called the “Official Visit.” Over the years, I have organised this initiative several times with the best intentions, but I believe I have never truly organised the Visit as an instrument of the Programme. In my quest to better understand what it entails, I participated in the same event when it took place with Master Felipe’s Family, and now I was there in the same pursuit of understanding with Master Quintela’s Family.

The “Official Visit” is not about the Master of a person visiting his Kung Fu Family. It provides an innovative opportunity for the practitioner, linked to the Hub(School), to offer “Kung Fu Life” through the proposed activities. As Professor François Jullien states in “The Propensity of Things,” it creates opportunities to activate tendencies that allow the practitioner to reflect on the importance of Kung Fu Life. Thus, Si Gung does not expect his reception or the activities to be perfect. He helps practitioners understand the schedule as a system of variation and fully commits to experiencing whatever situations arise from the programme, always with boundless patience. His dedication to his descendants is truly inspiring.

Por falar nisso, também pude me beneficiar de um tema proposto pela Família Kung Fu do Mestre Quintela, que promoveu um estudo específico nas listas da Trilogia Fundamental. O que inicialmente parecia uma curiosidade rapidamente se tornou quase um seminário exclusivo para quem estava ali. Claramente, estávamos presenciando a propensão da programação sendo muito bem aproveitada, indo muito além do que havia sido proposto inicialmente. Fiquei realmente tocado por estar vivendo aquele momento.

Para buscar e levar o Si Gung até sua casa, geralmente formávamos uma dupla eu e Paternostro, o Daai Si Hing da Família do Mestre Quintela. Era um trajeto considerável na cidade de Brasília, que aprendi a gostar. A sensação de reconhecer os locais em Brasília é curiosa, pois já perdi a conta de quantas vezes estive lá nos últimos dois anos. Assim, pude ter momentos de proximidade com o Paternostro que foram bem especiais, nos quais falamos sobre episódios de nossas vidas que de alguma maneira se coincidiam. Quando Si Gung entrava no carro, aproveitava para perguntar detalhes sobre a celebração do seu aniversário no ano que vem.

Quando os dias chegavam ao fim, nos reuníamos todos para conversar. O Mestre Quintela tem um grande dom de agregar pessoas ao seu redor. Todos os membros da sua família dormiram lá naquele final de semana. O ambiente é muito harmonioso o tempo todo, e estávamos sempre rindo bastante com as histórias de vida que cada um compartilhava ao redor de uma pizza ou de uma garrafa de Jack Daniel’s. Fiquei feliz por ter essa oportunidade.

Speaking of which, I was also able to benefit from a theme proposed by the Kung Fu Family of Master Quintela, who organised a specific study on the lists of the Fundamental Trilogy. What initially seemed like a curiosity quickly turned into almost an exclusive seminar for those present. Clearly, we were witnessing the potential of the programme being fully realised, going well beyond what had initially been proposed. I was truly moved to be experiencing that moment.

To pick up and take Si Gung home, my usual partner was Paternostro, the Daai Si Hing of Master Quintela’s Family. It was quite a journey across the city of Brasília, which I have come to appreciate. The feeling of recognising the places in Brasília is quite curious, as I have lost count of how many times I have been there in the last two years. This allowed me to have special moments of closeness with Paternostro, during which we talked about episodes in our lives that somehow coincided. When Si Gung got into the car, I took the opportunity to ask him about the details of his birthday celebration next year.

As the days drew to a close, we all gathered to talk. Master Quintela has a remarkable gift for bringing people together around him. All the members of his family stayed there that weekend. The atmosphere was harmonious throughout, and we were always laughing heartily at the life stories each person shared over pizza or a bottle of Jack Daniel’s. I felt grateful to have that opportunity.

O tema que eu havia proposto era sobre a vida do Patriarca Leung Jaan. Escolhi esse tema porque, sendo ele da sexta geração, entendo que tenha sido o primeiro dos ancestrais da Linhagem Moy Yat a ter a missão de tornar o sistema Ving Tsun reconhecido publicamente. Era como se um entusiasta das artes marciais como ele tivesse recebido uma missão à qual não pediu. Como um praticante lida com isso? Como um Si Fu prepara um discípulo para uma missão dessas? Como um Si Fu, no caso Leung Jaan, deve ter lidado com o pioneirismo que sua jornada Kung Fu impôs a ele? Todas essas perguntas, e muitas outras, foram comentadas por Si Gung através de uma apresentação de slides e exibição de vídeos preparados meticulosamente para aquele momento(foto acima). Si Gung havia emendado duas semanas intensas em São Paulo, recebendo membros do Grande Clã de várias partes, incluindo eu mesmo. Ele havia chegado a Brasília, passado poucos minutos com sua esposa e, em seguida, se juntado à Visita Oficial do Mestre Quintela. E ali estava ele: na última atividade de domingo, uma entrega tão incrível quanto aquela.

Lembrei do meu irmão Kung Fu Fabiano Silva e de como ele fala da importância de terminar seus treinamentos para gestores em sua empresa com finais apoteóticos. Pois bem, ali estava um final apoteótico para as incríveis experiências que vivemos. E ao ver o Si Gung e sua apresentação, perguntei a mim mesmo: “Qual é o limite para buscar a excelência na sua entrega?”. 

The topic I proposed was about the life of Patriarch Leung Jaan. I chose this theme because, being from the sixth generation, I believe he was the first of the ancestors of the Moy Yat lineage to have the mission of making the Ving Tsun system publicly recognised. It was as if an enthusiast of martial arts like him had received a mission he did not ask for. How does a practitioner deal with this? How does a Si Fu prepare a disciple for such a mission? How must a Si Fu, in Leung Jaan’s case, have dealt with the pioneering spirit that his Kung Fu journey imposed upon him? All these questions, and many others, were discussed by Si Gung through a meticulously prepared slide presentation and video display for that moment (photo above). Si Gung had just completed two intense weeks in São Paulo, welcoming members of the Clan from various places, including myself. He had arrived in Brasília, spent only a few minutes with his wife, and then joined the Official Visit of Master Quintela's Family. And there he was: at the last activity on Sunday, delivering something as incredible as that.

I recalled my Kung Fu brother Fabiano Silva and how he talks about the importance of finishing his training sessions for managers in his company with spectacular finales. Well, there was a spectacular finale for the incredible experiences we had. As I watched Si Gung and his presentation, I asked myself: “What is the limit to seeking excellence in your delivery?”
