Com a eminência do lançamento do novo filme da franquia "O Grande Mestre"(Ip Man 4). Percebemos que o plot do novo filme, situado nos EUA ainda que Ip Man na vida real nunca tenha pisado em solo estado unidense. Mostra o interesse dos produtores em testar o carisma desta franquia, com um dos públicos mais exigentes do mundo.
Acontece que bem antes da franquia estrelada por Donnie Yen(Ip Man), a trinta anos atrás, Chow Yun Fat estrelava um filme que mudaria para sempre o cinema de Hong Kong e do leste asiático: "God of Gamblers" de 1989. Acompanhe o trailer abaixo:

It shows the producers' interest in testing the charisma of this franchise, with one of the most demanding audiences in the world.

Chow Yun Fat não é muito conhecido pelo grande público do ocidente. Muitos lembram dele apenas pelo papel de Li Mu Bai em "O Tigre e o Dragão"(Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2000). Acontece que ele começou sua carreira em 1976 se tornando o grande nome do cinema chinês na década de '80 e '90. Afinal, se você pensou que era Jackie Chan, se enganou.
Chow Yun Fat, possui uma elegância própria e um carisma acima da média. Diferente de atores ocidentais como Stallone e Shwarzenegger que no auge de suas carreiras, declinavam papéis que os retratassem como vilões.
Chow Yun Fat por outro lado, aceitava papéis onde atuava como gangster, assassino de aluguel entre outros. Ainda assim, o sucesso era instantâneo. E ele transformava qualquer filme em clássico.

Chow Yun Fat is not well known to the western public. Many remember him only for the role of Li Mu Bai in "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2000". It turns out that he began his career in 1976 becoming the big name of Chinese cinema in the '80s and' 90s. After all, if you thought it was Jackie Chan, you were wrong.
Chow Yun Fat has its own elegance and above-average charisma. Unlike Western actors like Stallone and Shwarzenegger who at the prime of their careers declined roles that portrayed them as villains.
Chow Yun Fat on the other hand, accepted roles where he acted as gangster, hired killer among others. Still, success was instantaneous. And he made any movie a classic.

"God of Gamblers" era para ter sido um drama, mas tinha vários momentos de comédia. Foi então que algo inesperado aconteceu: O filme se tornou uma espécie de "força da natureza", e tudo, desde seu poster, as roupas dos personagens até a trilha sonora, se tornaram clássicos que geraram diversos spin-offs e paródias.
"God of Gamblers" criou em 1989, um novo gênero de cinema em Hong Kong: O de "filmes sobre apostas". E mesmo com esse sucesso estrondoso, Chow Yun Fat não quis retornar para a sequência do filme em 1990. Ele era o ator preferido do lendário John Woo, e juntos faziam um sucesso atrás do outro, sempre portando duas berettas em suas mãos.

"God of Gamblers" was supposed to have been a drama, but it had several comedy moments. Then something unexpected happened: The film became a kind of "force of nature," and everything from its poster, the character's clothes to the soundtrack, became classics that spawned various spin-offs and parodies.
"God of Gamblers" created in 1989 a new film genre in Hong Kong: "gambling movies". And even with this smash hit, Chow Yun Fat did not want to return to the sequel to the movie in 1990. He was legendary John Woo's favorite actor, and together they made one hit after another, always carrying two berettas in his hands.

O filme reuniu um time de estrelas, que apesar de pouco conhecidos no ocidente, são lendas vivas do cinema de Hong Kong. Além de Chow Yun Fat como ator principal, a lenda de um estilo musical conhecido como "cantopop"(Cantonese Pop) Andy Lau e uma das atrizes mais bonitas da história do cinema de Hong Kong, Joey Wong(foto). Estavam no elenco.

Também no ano de 1990, Andy Lau retorna sozinho para a continuação de God of Gamblers. Para reforçar o elenco sem Chow Yun Fat, o comediante Stephen Chow(citado acima estrelando a paródia) foi convidado. Mas o filme sem sua estrela principal e sem Joey Wong, não deu certo!

Also in the year 1990, Andy Lau returns alone for the sequel to God of Gamblers. To bolster the cast without Chow Yun Fat, comedian Stephen Chow (quoted above starring the parody) was invited. But the movie without its main star and without Joey Wong didn't work out!

Em 1994, Chow Yun Fat finalmente aceita retornar ao papel de Ko Chun. Para tal, os produtores resolveram desconsiderar a continuação de 1990. A aceitação do público não foi tão boa quanto o esperado. Então parecia que mesmo com a lenda de volta no papel principal, com sua famosa música tema (CLIQUE AQUI para ouvir) não era o suficiente para despertar novamente o interesse do público.

In 1994, Chow Yun Fat finally agrees to return to the role of Ko Chun. To this end, the producers decided to disregard the continuation of 1990's sequel. Public acceptance was not as good as expected. Apesar do sucesso do filme original nunca ter sido alcançado. Chow Yun Fat, capitaneando um elenco dos sonhos em 1989, mudou a história do cinema de Hong Kong para sempre com esse clássico da cultura pop. E trinta anos depois, sua contribuição como "God of Gamblers" ainda é lembrada por fãs do mundo todo!
