My Si Fu visits my Kung Fu Family in Méier

 

Tivemos a honra de receber meu Si Fu Julio Camacho no Mo Gun da minha Família Kung Fu no bairro do Méier, Zona Norte do Rio de Janeiro. Mesmo com uma agenda cheia, precisando se dividir entre compromissos relacionados à sua função de líder da Família Moy Jo Lei Ou, bem como compromissos pessoais como pai, filho e marido, Si Fu encontrou espaço para nos oferecer muitas horas de seu tempo em um sábado. Essa também foi uma oportunidade de apresentar a nova sede da minha Família Kung Fu no bairro. Já estamos estabelecidos nela desde o final do ano passado, e esta foi a primeira oportunidade desde então para receber não só Si Fu, como também meu Si Hing Leonardo Reis e meu Si Dai Thiago Silva.

We had the honour of hosting my Si Fu Julio Camacho at the Mo Gun of my Kung Fu family in the Méier neighbourhood, North Zone of Rio de Janeiro. Despite his busy schedule, balancing commitments related to his role as leader of the Moy Jo Lei Ou family, as well as personal responsibilities as a father, son, and husband, Si Fu found time to spend many hours with us on a Saturday. This was also an opportunity to introduce the new headquarters of my Kung Fu family in the neighbourhood. We have been established there since the end of last year, and this was the first opportunity since then to host not only Si Fu but also my Si Hing Leonardo Reis and my Si Dai Thiago Silva.

O garotinho de boné azul na foto acima é meu discípulo Rodrigo Caputo, que hoje tem 25 anos. Na foto, ele participa da "Primeira Visita Oficial" do Si Fu à então "Unidade Méier" em 2008. Naquela época, vivíamos altos momentos de aventura, funcionando dentro de uma escola de dança, e no final da tarde e à noite, utilizávamos uma cozinha desativada para nossas atividades. Sabe, talvez um dos aspectos que mais aprecio em ser profissional de Ving Tsun é a passagem do tempo. Rodrigo, na foto com apenas nove anos, foi quem junto comigo, buscou e trouxe Si Fu de volta para sua casa nesta visita dirigindo, dezesseis anos depois. Você consegue perceber o quão especial isso é? Junto a nós estava meu Si Hing Leonardo, a quem convidei formalmente para estar conosco nesta visita. Ele aceitou prontamente o convite, e juntos fomos encontrar Si Fu em sua casa naquela manhã. Si Fu apareceu todo de preto; o Daai Si Hing fez uma brincadeira com ele por causa disso, e Si Fu sorriu antes de entrar no carro.

The little boy in the blue cap in the photo above is my disciple Rodrigo Caputo, who is now 25 years old. In the photo, he is participating in the "First Official Visit" of Si Fu to the then "MYVT Méier Studio" in 2008. Those were times of high adventure, as we operated within a dance school, and in the late afternoon and evening, we only had access to a deactivated kitchen to practice. You know, one of the aspects I most appreciate about being a Ving Tsun professional is the passage of time. Rodrigo, in the photo at just nine years old, was the one who fetched and brought Si Fu back to his home for this visit, sixteen years later driving a car. Can you see how special that is? With us was my Si Hing Leonardo, whom I formally invited to join us for this visit. He promptly accepted the invitation, and together we met Si Fu at his home that morning. Si Fu arrived dressed entirely in black; Daai Si Hing made a joke about this, and Si Fu smiled before getting into the car.

Quando era adolescente, eu ficava encantado com a quantidade de certificados que ficavam atrás da mesa do Si Fu em seu escritório no antigo Núcleo Jacarepaguá. Sempre quis ter uma parede como aquela. No entanto, foi apenas neste Mo Gun, com dimensões menores e com novas certificações de 2015 em diante, que, ao entrar ali com Si Fu, percebi que havia conseguido ter uma parede como aquela. Enquanto Si Fu observava a parede, atento a cada detalhe e a cada item pendurado, eu estava um tanto emocionado. Os certificados em si não eram o ponto principal, mas sim a configuração da parede. Em segundos, minha mente traçou uma linha entre a parede que via atrás do Si Fu quando era um moleque de 16 anos e a parede do meu Mo Gun que agora ele estava vendo. Lembrei-me de momentos da jornada até ali que me tocaram muito. Não sei quanto tempo ficamos naquela sala, mas para mim, pareceu uma vida inteira, com tantas lembranças.

As a teenager, I was fascinated by the number of certificates displayed behind Si Fu's desk in his office at one of his former schools in West Zone of our city . I always wanted a wall like that. However, it was only in this Mo Gun, with its smaller dimensions and new certifications from 2015 onwards, that I realised, upon entering with Si Fu, that I had managed to have a wall like that. As Si Fu examined the wall, paying attention to every detail and every item hanging, I was quite emotional. The certificates themselves were not the main point, but rather the arrangement of the wall. In seconds, my mind drew a line between the wall I saw behind Si Fu when I was a 16-year-old and the wall of my Mo Gun that he was now viewing. I recalled moments from the journey that had deeply touched me. I don't know how long we spent in that room, but to me, it felt like a lifetime, filled with so many memories.

Essa visita teve muitos momentos marcantes, e um deles, sem dúvida, foi o comprometimento do Si Fu em respeitar o que o grupo havia solicitado, do início ao final do tempo programado. Ele praticou com cada um dos meus discípulos, sempre com sua capacidade ímpar de interação, o que proporcionou um ambiente rico não só para o compartilhamento e aprendizagem, mas também muito agradável.

This visit had many memorable moments, and one of them, undoubtedly, was Si Fu’s commitment to respecting what the group had requested from the beginning to the end of the scheduled time. He practised with each of my students, always with his unique ability to interact, which created an environment rich not only for sharing and learning but also for being very enjoyable.

Quando Si Fu visitou o trabalho que eu empreendia dezesseis anos atrás (foto acima), posso compartilhar que lembro vagamente de um dos meus sentimentos recorrentes: "...A qualquer momento, tudo pode acabar..." . Si Fu dizia muitas coisas para mim naqueles tempos para me ajudar a melhorar minha autoconfiança, e eu guardei com afinco. Uma dessas coisas era que devíamos ter como assinatura sermos os primeiros a chegar e os últimos a sair de qualquer evento. Ele teria dito: "...Thiago, o praticante precisa olhar ao redor e encontrar você no recinto. Para alguém que está começando, isso é muito importante..."-  Lembro bem de ter comentado com ele que, quando estive em uma palestra do Si Gung no Hotel Florida em 2001, me tranquilizou encontrar o Si Fu no meio da multidão sentado lá na frente. Ele acenou com a cabeça e sorriu. Para um jovem tímido de apenas dezesseis anos, aquilo significou muito. Outro ponto importante que lembro de ter conversado com ele nos primeiros dias foi: "...Você precisa se preparar para receber cada pessoa. O praticante que chega às 21h não tem culpa de você ter começado a dar aula às 14h. Ele merece 100% do que você tiver..." - E ali em 2008, lembro bem que sempre via Si Fu dando 100% desde que comecei em 1999. Por isso levei a sério essa orientação.

When Si Fu visited the work I was involved in sixteen years ago (see photo above), I can vaguely recall one of my recurring feelings: "...At any moment, everything could come to an end..." Si Fu used to say many things to me at that time to help build my self-confidence, and I took them to heart. One of the things he said was that we should make it our signature to be the first to arrive and the last to leave any event. He might have said: "...Thiago, the practitioner needs to look around and see you in the room. For someone who is just starting, this is very important..." I remember telling him that when I attended a lecture by Si Gung at the Hotel Florida in 2001, it reassured me to see Si Fu amidst the crowd sitting right at the front. He nodded and smiled. For a shy sixteen-year-old, that meant a lot. Another important point I remember discussing with him in those early days was: "...You need to be prepared to give each person your full attention. The practitioner who arrives at 9 p.m. is not to blame for you starting your class at 2 p.m. He deserves 100% of whatever you have..." And back in 2008, I clearly saw Si Fu giving 100% ever since I started in 1999. That's why I took this advice seriously.

Então, quase duas décadas depois, foi muito tocante ver Si Fu entregar 100% durante todo o tempo, desde o café da manhã até sua despedida, não para meus irmãos Kung Fu como em 2008, mas agora para meus discípulos (foto acima). Hoje, não tenho mais medo de "que tudo se acabe a qualquer momento". Realmente enraizei aquelas duas orientações e muitas outras recebidas do Si Fu ao longo das décadas, e tenho a confiança de que, mesmo que o praticante se afaste da prática, até não sobrar mais nenhum, ele nunca poderá dizer que faltou dedicação e entrega da minha parte, seja em qual circunstância for.

So, almost two decades later, it was very touching to see Si Fu give 100% throughout the entire time, from breakfast until his departure—not for my Kung Fu brothers as in 2008, but now for my students (see photo above). Today, I no longer fear "that everything might come to an end at any moment." I have truly internalised those two pieces of advice and many others received from Si Fu over the decades, and I am confident that, even if practitioners were to leave the practice, leaving none behind, they would never be able to say that there was a lack of dedication and commitment on my part, regardless of the circumstances.

Meus discípulos também puderam conversar com Si Fu sobre dúvidas acumuladas nos últimos dois anos. Si Fu respondeu uma a uma, pontuou muitas questões e, entre outras coisas, falou sobre os novos Si Fu da Família Moy Jo Lei Ou, mencionando que ele entregaria o "Jiu Paai" como símbolo de autorização para que iniciassem suas Famílias Kung Fu. Si Fu usou meu querido irmão Kung Fu Vladimir Anchieta como exemplo para afirmar que apoia cada um desses líderes a realizar o trabalho à sua maneira. Para mim, foi muito importante essa fala para meus discípulos, pois minha escolha não foi fazer um trabalho próprio, mas buscar orientação do Si Gung para realizar meu trabalho sob todas as diretrizes da linhagem representada por ele. Com a anuência do Si Fu, me tornei parte do Moy Yat Ving Tsun Safeguard Group, e assim, Si Fu deixou muito claro para todos que não havia problema algum em eu não ser parte do Instituto Julio Camacho. Para mim, aquela fala chegou como aquele mesmo aceno de cabeça seguido de um sorriso que recebi na palestra em 2001 no Hotel Florida.

No final do dia, agradeci ao Si Fu pela sinceridade em cada minuto de seu contato comigo e com meus discípulos.

My students were also able to discuss questions they had accumulated over the past two years with Si Fu. Si Fu answered each one, addressed many issues, and, among other things, spoke about the new Si Fu of the Moy Jo Lei Ou family, mentioning that he would hand over the "Jiu Paai" as a symbol of authorisation for them to establish their own Kung Fu families. Si Fu used my dear Kung Fu brother Vladimir Anchieta as an example to affirm that he supports each of these leaders to carry out their work as they see fit. For me, this was very important for my students, as my choice was not to establish my own work but to seek guidance from Si Gung to carry out my work under all the guidelines of the lineage represented by him. With Si Fu's approval, I became part of the Moy Yat Ving Tsun Safeguard Group, and Si Fu also made it very clear to everyone that there was no issue with me not being part of the Julio Camacho Institute. For me, that statement felt like the same nod and smile I received during the lecture in 2001 at the Hotel Florida.

At the end of the day, I thanked Si Fu for his sincerity in every minute of his interaction with me and my students.
