The Ving Tsun System back to the Brazilian Army's Special Forces.

Meu pai costumava falar o quanto gostaria que eu fosse militar. Meu avô havia sido da Polícia do Exército, e meu Tio Gilson, Coronel do Exército. A questão é que "vocação" é uma coisa muito séria. E a minha vocação são as artes marciais. Meu pai dizia que eu deveria entender que o Ving Tsun era um "hobby", e que poderia me custar caro não perceber isso antes de envelhecer demais. Meu avô apoiava avidamente minha jornada no Kung Fu, e meu Tio Gilson dizia sempre: "Thiaguinho, na vida você nasce, cresce e morre. Isso é igual para todo o mundo, o que você faz entre cada um deles..." - Ele costumava parar, fumar seu cigarro e prosseguir - "...É a sua vida..."

Talvez por isso, quando subi ao palco do auditório do Centro de Instrução de Operações Especiais - CiOpEsp, estava lembrando deles. Era como se eu quisesse que o dia acabasse logo para contar para eles onde as artes marciais haviam me levado e a honra que eu estava tendo naquele momento. Infelizmente, todos já faleceram, mas aquela palestra significava mais para mim do que a foto acima transparece. O Ving Tsun que aprendo, me levou até ali. 

 My father used to speak about how much he wished I would become a military man. My grandfather had been in the Army Police, and my Uncle Gilson, a Colonel in the Army. The issue is that "calling" is a very serious matter. And my calling is martial arts. My father used to say that I should understand that Ving Tsun was a "hobby," and that it could cost me dearly not to realize this before getting too old. My grandfather avidly supported my  Kung Fu Journey, and my Uncle Gilson would always say, "Little Thiago, in life you are born, grow, and die. That is the same for everyone, what you do between each of them..." - He used to pause, smoke his cigarette, and continue - "...It's your life..."

Perhaps for this reason, when I stepped onto the stage of the auditorium at the Special Operations Instruction Center - CiOpEsp, I was remembering them. It was as if I wanted the day to end soon to tell them where martial arts had taken me and the honor I was having at that moment. Unfortunately, they have all passed away, but that lecture meant more to me than the photo above reveals. The Ving Tsun I learn has brought me there.

Eu fui convidado pelo Mestre Fábio Gomes [foto acima] para uma conversa com ele e o COMANDOS, veterano do exército brasileiro, Sr. Marcelo Alves [FOTO ACIMA], para falar sobre o projeto. Mestre Fábio Gomes é um grande conhecedor do meio militar e realiza trabalhos com o Sistema Ving Tsun em diferentes forças desde 1999, alcançando grande sucesso e trazendo muito orgulho para todos da Linhagem Moy Yat. Sobre o Sr. Marcelo, já estive com ele em um evento promovido pela Família Kung Fu da Mestra Úrsula Lima, porém foi apenas neste dia que pude ouvi-lo e conversamos por quatro horas. O Sr. Marcelo é uma pessoa muito gentil e séria ao mesmo tempo. Em cada história sobre seu treinamento ou orientação de como a palestra poderia se dar, ele deixava claro não só o amor pelos COMANDOS como o orgulho de fazer parte. Então, por mais que tenha estudado sobre o tema nos dias que se seguiram, nada se comparou aos relatos do Sr. Marcelo, que muito me impactaram pelo espírito que ele colocava em cada palavra.

I was invited by Master Fabio Gomes [photo above] for a conversation with him and the COMMANDOS, a veteran of the Brazilian army, Mr. Marcelo Alves [PHOTO ABOVE], to discuss the project. Master Fabio Gomes is highly knowledgeable about the military environment and has been involved in Ving Tsun System work with various forces since 1999, achieving great success and bringing much pride to everyone in the Moy Yat Lineage. Regarding Mr. Marcelo, I had previously met him at an event organized by the Kung Fu Family of Master Ursula Lima, but it was only on this day that I had the opportunity to listen to him and converse with him for four hours. Mr. Marcelo is a very kind and serious person at the same time. In every story of his service or guidance on how the lecture could proceed, he made it clear not only his love for the COMMANDOS but also his pride in being a part of it. So, even though I had studied the topic in the days that followed, nothing compared to Mr. Marcelo's accounts, which deeply impacted me due to the spirit he conveyed in every word.

O momento da palestra havia chegado e o primeiro a subir ao palco foi o Mestre Fábio Gomes. Sua apresentação exibia um alto nível de profissionalismo e cuidado meticuloso. Foi muito impressionante para mim assisti-lo. Lembrei-me de uma breve conversa em Brasília com os Mestres Felipe Soares e Tiago Quintela, durante a qual discutimos a estranha sensação que experimentamos em certos momentos ao falar em público sobre o Sistema Ving Tsun, como se estivéssemos falando melhor do que nossa capacidade normal. O Mestre Felipe teria dito que era "quando o Sistema Ving Tsun fala por você". Para mim, também era como ver o Grão-Mestre Leo Imamura falando através do Mestre Fábio Gomes. Então, era como se eu estivesse assistindo a outra palestra, uma que falava sobre o grande Kung Fu que o Mestre Fábio demonstrava, em vez do conteúdo em si.

The moment of the lecture had arrived, and the first to take the stage was Master Fabio Gomes. His presentation displayed a high level of professionalism and meticulousness. It was very impressive for me to watch him. I recalled a brief conversation in Brasilia with Masters Felipe Soares and Tiago Quintela, during which we talked about the strange sensation we experience at certain moments while speaking in public about the Ving Tsun System, as if we were speaking better than our normal ability. Master Felipe had said it was "When the Ving Tsun System speaks trough you." For me, it was also like seeing Grand Master Leo Imamura speaking through Master Fabio Gomes. So, it was as if I were watching another lecture, one that spoke of the great Kung Fu that Master Fabio demonstrated, rather than the content itself.

A presença do COMANDOS, Sr. Marcelo Alves [foto acima à esquerda], na palestra era muito importante. Ele poderia compartilhar suas impressões sobre ter praticado o Sistema Ving Tsun nos COMANDOS na virada dos anos 90 para 2000. Sua fala foi muito precisa e assertiva, e me impressionou muito quando, ao final, ele bradou: "COMANDOS!" - E imediatamente, em uníssono, toda a audiência do auditório bradou o mesmo grito como uma só voz.

Preciso destacar também toda a gentileza com a qual fomos recebidos no local desde a nossa chegada. Mesmo sendo profissionais altamente treinados em condições extremas, eles demonstraram grande interesse no projeto desde o início, como uma ferramenta para refinar seu trabalho ainda mais. Mestre Fábio Gomes citou a importância do Sistema Ving Tsun como ferramenta também para o "Desenvolvimento Humano".

The presence of the COMMANDOS, Mr. Marcelo Alves [photo above, left], at the lecture was very important. He could share his insights about having practiced the Ving Tsun System with the COMMANDOS during the late 1990s to early 2000s. His speech was very precise and assertive, and I was greatly impressed when, at the end, he exclaimed: "COMMANDOS!" - And immediately, in unison, the entire audience of the auditorium shouted the same cry as one voice.

I must also highlight all the kindness with which we were received at the venue upon our arrival. Even though they are highly trained professionals in extreme conditions, they showed great interest in the project from the outset, seeing it as a tool to further refine their work. Master Fabio Gomes mentioned the importance of the Ving Tsun System as a tool for "Human Development" as well. 

Eu poderia ter uma vida financeiramente mais tranquila, aparentemente mais estável e com mais tempo para o ócio. Eu poderia ter reconhecido minha "vocação" e deixá-la de lado, guardando-a em algum canto onde, remexendo bem mais velho, eu poderia encontrar alguma desculpa para não ter seguido ela. Felizmente, graças a toda a paciência do meu Mestre e às oportunidades que ele me proporcionou, pude me preparar para viver esse momento. Pois voltando de carro com esses dois senhores da foto acima, sabíamos de alguma maneira, a respeito da grande honra que havíamos tido naquela tarde. Uma honra que é do tipo que não se pode explicar, apenas viver. Você lembra de pessoas, de momentos que viveu, e de pessoas que ficaram pelo caminho e de momentos que abriu mão, tudo por um único dia. Um dia rico o suficiente para valer uma vida inteira. Eu nunca desisti. 

I could have had a financially more tranquil life, seemingly more stable and with more time for leisure. I could have acknowledged my 'calling' and set it aside, in some corner where, rummaging much older, I could find some excuse not to pursue it. Fortunately, thanks to all the patience of my Master and the opportunities he provided me, I was able to prepare myself to live this moment. For as we drove back with these two gentlemen from the photo above, we somehow knew about the great honour we had had that afternoon. An honour that is the kind that cannot be explained, only lived. You remember people, moments you lived, and people who remained along the way and moments you gave up, all for a single day. A day rich enough to be worth a whole lifetime. I never gave up.
