An essay on Master Nataniel Rosa

Já fazia algum tempo que via o meu Si Baak Nataniel Rosa sempre com uma garrafa em mãos durante os estudos que promovemos pelo Instituto Moy Yat. Ele estava ali na câmera e, de repente, bebia alguma coisa... Finalmente, pude estar com ele e perguntar do que se tratava. Com muita tranquilidade, ele disse: "É água."- Fiquei um tanto quanto frustrado e insisti se era apenas água mesmo, e ele confirmou: "Sim, bebo duas dessas por dia."-  Eu achava que fosse alguma receita, mas era só água mesmo. Acho que, de certa forma, a simplicidade com que o Si Baak leva a vida deixa os sonhadores como eu sem entender muito bem qual é o seu segredo.

Lembro que eu era um fã do Mestre Fábio Campi, e quando Si Baak Nataniel apareceu no antigo Núcleo Central e os dois começaram a praticar, mesmo o Si Suk Fábio Campi sorria, conforme o Si Baak parecia brincar com ele como se fosse um novato. Na ocasião, pensei que ele deveria ser realmente muito bom, para praticar com tanta facilidade com uma pessoa que eu admirava tanto. Recentemente, quando perguntado sobre a razão de ter sido reconhecido com um prêmio da International Wushu Kung Fu Hall of Fame em reconhecimento pelas suas conquistas e excelência, ele disse apenas: "...Porque eu mantive a relação com meu Si Fu..." E prosseguiu: "...Eu não me considero alguém muito inteligente, então por que abriria mão de fazer uso da inteligência dele a meu favor?" - Concluiu como quem diz o óbvio.

It had been some time since I saw my Si Baak Nataniel Rosa always with a bottle in hand during the studies we promote at the Moy Yat Institute. He was there on camera, and suddenly he would drink something... Finally, I was able to be with him and ask what it was. With great calmness, he said, 'It's water.' I was somewhat frustrated and insisted if it was just water, and he confirmed, 'Yes, I drink two of these a day.' I thought it was some recipe, but it was just water. I think that, in a way, the simplicity with which Si Baak approaches life leaves dreamers like me not quite understanding what his secret is.

I remember being a fan of Master Fabio Campi, and when Si Baak Nataniel appeared at the old MYVT Central School in Sao Paulo and they began to practice, even Si Suk Fabio Campi smiled as Si Baak seemed to play with him as if he were a rookie. At the time, I thought he must be really good to practice with such ease with someone I admired so much. Recently, when asked about the reason for being recognized with an award from the International Wushu Kung Fu Hall of Fame in recognition of his achievements and excellence, he simply said, '...Because I maintained my relationship with my Si Fu...' And he continued, '...I don't consider myself very intelligent, so why would I not make use of his intelligence to my advantage?' He concluded as if stating the obvious

Si Baak circula pelo seu Mo Gun com sua garrafa enorme de água... Ele está sempre rindo e conversando com alguns de seus discípulos como se fossem velhos amigos. Apesar de seu tamanho e presença, ele consegue desaparecer entre as pessoas sem nunca chamar a atenção para si. Enquanto isso, meu Si Gung, o Grão-Mestre Leo Imamura, passa a maior parte do tempo sentado na cadeira do escritório do Si Baak ou em uma das "Gau Yi" ao lado do Sam Toi. Si Gung interrompe a prática, faz comentários e conversa com os praticantes, enquanto Si Baak fica misturado no meio deles como se fosse mais um. Comportamento bem diferente do esperado de alguém que recebeu um prêmio tão importante, assistido por mais de dois milhões de pessoas que acompanhavam ao vivo pela internet o evento que ocorria no Canadá. Sobre o fato de que já é um Líder de Família veterano com o título de Mestre Sênior e ainda assim, está sempre com seu Si Fu com um espírito de iniciante, ele comenta - "...Esse é o nosso diferencial. Existe toda uma movimentação ocorrendo, e precisamos permanecer unidos..." - Diz Si Baak.

Si Baak moves around his Mo Gun with his enormous water bottle... He's always laughing and chatting with some of his disciples as if they were old friends. Despite his size and presence, he manages to blend in among the people without ever drawing attention to himself. Meanwhile, my Si Gung, Grandmaster Leo Imamura, spends most of his time sitting in Si Baak's office chair or in one of the 'Gau Yi' next to the Sam Toi. Si Gung interrupts the practice, makes comments, and talks to the practitioners, while Si Baak mingles among them as if he were just one of them. This behavior is quite different from what you would expect from someone who received such an important award, watched by over two million people who were tuning in live via the internet to the event happening in Canada. Regarding the fact that he is already a veteran Family Leader with the title of Senior Master and still maintains a beginner's spirit with his Si Fu, he comments, '...That's our differentiating factor. There's a whole movement happening, and we need to stay united...' - says Si Baak.

Quando perguntei ao Si Baak sobre como estava a sua agenda, ele respondeu: "Neste período, minha agenda será a do seu Si Gung." Essa resposta me tocou profundamente, pois fiquei alguns minutos lembrando de quando saía correndo da faculdade para tentar pegar um ônibus que me levasse a tempo de almoçar com o Si Fu e a Paula Gama do outro lado da cidade. Logo depois, comecei a trabalhar com Ving Tsun no bairro do Méier, e me perguntei, ao ler aquela mensagem, quantos anos haviam se passado desde que eu corria pra almoçar com meu Si Fu. Então, pude ver o Si Baak atuando como um assistente do Si Gung em várias oportunidades, inclusive com meus discípulos [foto acima] que estavam comigo. Si Gung permite-se não olhar diretamente enquanto trata de outros assuntos, já que Si Baak pontua como se fosse o próprio Si Gung falando. Isso é bastante curioso, pois ouvi dizer que o Si Taai Gung Moy Yat abriu seu primeiro Mo Gun próximo ao Mo Gun do Si Jo Ip Man para continuar próximo ao seu Si Fu. Portanto, como o Si Baak, que às vezes parece ter um comportamento de coadjuvante em seu próprio Mo Gun, tem discípulos tão afiados, ainda que tão diferentes dele? Si Baak diz que não concorda o tempo todo com o Si Gung, mas se apresenta para ter conversas difíceis sempre que necessário. E eu acredito nisso, pois ele consegue variar sua abordagem de algo completamente descontraído para um comentário muito sério e assertivo em instantes.

When I asked Si Baak about his schedule, he replied, 'During this period, my schedule will be the same as your Si Gung's.' This response touched me deeply, as I spent a few minutes reminiscing about the times when I used to rush from college to catch a bus that would take me in time for lunch with Si Fu and Paula Gama on the other side of the city. Later, I began working in Méier, and when I read that message, I wondered how many years had passed. Then, I could see Si Baak acting as an assistant to Si Gung on various occasions, even with my disciples [pictured above] who were with me. Si Gung allows himself not to look directly while dealing with other matters, as Si Baak punctuates as if it were Si Gung himself speaking. This is quite curious, as I heard that Si Taai Gung Moy Yat opened his first Mo Gun near Si Jo Ip Man's Mo Gun to remain close to his Si Fu. So, how does Si Baak, who sometimes appears to have a supporting role in his own Mo Gun, have disciples who are so sharp, albeit so different from him?

Si Baak says he doesn't agree with Si Gung all the time but is always ready to engage in difficult conversations when needed. And I believe that, as he can transition from a completely relaxed approach to a very serious and assertive comment in an instant

Ao final de cinco dias com Si Baak, pude ouvir dele sobre como meu Si Fu havia participado de vários momentos de sua jornada, seja ligados à carreira ou à Vida Kung Fu em viagens. Porém, de alguma maneira, foi no penúltimo dia da viagem, no encerramento da Visita Oficial do Núcleo Flor de Lótus, que meus discípulos ficaram muito impressionados com ele.

Si Baak havia passado o dia ali pelos cantos durante o evento de seu irmão Kung Fu mais novo. Pouco falava, às vezes gargalhava e em outros momentos mostrava vídeos de motores para o Si Gung nos intervalos. - "...Ele poderia nem ter ido, mas ele fez questão de vir nos dois dias." - Pontuou Si Gung em outro momento, evidenciando a escolha do Si Baak em estar presente. Então, quando as palavras foram passadas a ele, toda aquela brincadeira deu lugar a comentários muito sérios e importantes sobre vários pontos que ocorreram ao longo do dia. Meus discípulos ficaram muito impressionados, não apenas com a mudança de tom em sua fala, mas também com a qualidade do que dizia, mesmo aparentando não estar prestando atenção ao longo do dia. Foi uma verdadeira aula de Mestre naquele momento. Ao passar por ele enquanto todos se despediam, Si Gung disse para ele apenas o seguinte: "Muito boa a sua fala."

Apesar disso, o que mais me marcou ocorreu em nosso último abraço. Si Baak disse: "Volte sempre que quiser... É sério... Somos todos uma grande família."

At the end of five days with Si Baak, I could hear from him about how my Si Fu had participated in various moments of his journey, whether related to his career or the Kung Fu Life during travels. However, in some way, it was on the penultimate day of the trip, at the conclusion of the Official Visit to the Lotus Flower MYVT School, that my disciples were greatly impressed by him.

Si Baak had spent the day in the corners during the event of his younger Kung Fu brother. He spoke little, sometimes laughed, and at other times showed videos of engines to Si Gung during breaks. - '...He didn't have to come at all, but he made a point of being there for both days.' - Si Gung pointed out at another moment, highlighting Si Baak's choice to be present. Then, when the words were passed to him, all that playfulness gave way to very serious and important comments about various points that had occurred throughout the day. My disciples were deeply impressed not only by the change in tone in his speech but also by the quality of what he said, even though he seemed not to be paying attention. It was a true Masterclass at that moment. As I passed by him while everyone said their goodbyes, Si Gung said to him only the following: 'Your speech was very good.'

Despite this, what struck me the most happened in our last embrace. Si Baak said, 'Come back anytime you want... Seriously... We are all one big family'
