Poucos sabem da minha paixão pelo trabalho de Stephen Chow desde que ouvi falar dele a primeira vez em 2004 , quando me foi indicado o fabuloso "Shaolin Soccer"(2002). Recentemente, pude assistir a mais uma de suas controversas comédias entitulada "Flirting Scholar"(Táng Bóhǔ diǎn Qiūxiāng) de 1993.
Para assistir os filmes de Stephen Chow , é necessário muitas vezes ficar atento as suas referências e piadas que são um tanto quanto diferentes, e em filmes como "Flirting Scholar"(1993), piadas bem interessantes , se misturam com um humor que beira quase a inocência.

Few know of about my passion for Stephen Chow's work since I first heard of him in 2004, when I heard for the very first time about the fabulous Shaolin Soccer (2002). Recently, I was able to watch another of his  controversies comedies called "Flirting Scholar" (Táng Bóhǔ diǎn Qiūxiāng) from 1993.
In order to watch Stephen Chow's films, it is often necessary to be attentive as his references and jokes are somewhat different, and in movies like "Flirting Scholar" (1993), very interesting jokes, mix with hum, which borders almost an innocence.

A história: 
The Plot:

Durante a Dinastia Ming, existiam quatro eruditos (Scholars) inigualáveis em toda a China. Eles possuiam habilidades em poesia, pintura e caligrafia sem precedentes. Dentre eles, Tong Pak Fu(Stephen Chow) era o mais habilidoso. E vivia com sua mãe e suas cinco esposas em sua casa.
Acontece, que todas as esposas de Tong Pak Fu(Stephen Chow) eram viciadas em Mah Jong (risos) e transformavam parte de sua casa num salão de jogos e apostas.

During the Ming Dynasty, there were four Scholars unmatched all over China. They possessed unprecedented skills in poetry, painting, and calligraphy. Among them, Tong Pak Fu (Stephen Chow) was the most skilled. And he lived with his mother and his five wives in his house.
It turns out that all the wives of Tong Pak Fu (Stephen Chow) were addicted to Mah Jong (laughs) and turned part of his house in a hall of games and bets.

Certa vez, cansado dessa situação, enquanto viajava com os outros três eruditos (foto) Tong Pak Fu (Stephen Chow) avista seu par romântico no filme, e se apaixona. Ele então decide deixar tudo para trás, e se passar por um sem teto para trabalhar em regime de semi-escravidão na residência da Família Wah para conseguir se aroximar dela, que serve como uma das quatro principais servas da senhora da casa.
Para ser aceito na casa, Tong Pak Fu(Stephen Chow) disputa com outro pretendente quem tem mais desgraças na vida (risos) o que gera uma cena bem divertida, enquanto eles tentam comover as quatro servas com suas histórias tristes..

During a trip with his fellow scholars , Tong Pak Fu (Stephen Chow) sees his romantic partner for the very first time in the film, and falls in love with her. He then decides to leave everything behind, and disguise himself as  a homeless to work in semi-slavery regime at the Wah Family residence to get close to her, who serves as one of the four main maids of the lady of the house.
To be accepted in the house, Tong Pak Fu (Stephen Chow) wrangles with another suitor who has more misfortunes in life (laughs) which creates a very amusing scene, while they try to move the four maids with their sad stories ..

O par romântico de Tong Pak Fu (Stephen Chow) é Chow Heung. Interpretada pela lendária atriz Gong Li. Essa atriz começou sua carreira ao lado do também lendário diretor de filmes como "Herói" (Hero,2002) e "Lanternas Vermelhas" (Dà Hóng Dēnglóng Gāogāo Guà, 1991) Zhang Yi Mou.  Juntos, fizeram não só inúmeras colaborações, mas são considerados os responsáveis por levar o cinema chinês aos circuitos mais restritos do cinema na Europa.
Além de sua habilidade de interpretação, a beleza de Gong Li é considerada algo único no cinema chinês. Por isso, mesmo em um filme tão inocente como "Flirting Scholar"(1993), muitos takes com ela, se tornaram clássicos na história do cinema chinês.
Na cena acima, vemos o momento em que ela olha na direção de Tong Pak Fu(Stephen Chow) na primeira vez que os dois se encontram. Essa virada para a camera se tornara clássica pouco tempo depois.

The romantic couple of Tong Pak Fu (Stephen Chow) is Chow Heung played by Gong Li. The Legendary actress began her career alongside the also legendary director of films such as "Hero" ( 2002) and "Red Lanterns" (Dà Hóng Dēnglóng Gāogāo Guà, 1991) Zhang Yi Mou. Together, they have made not only numerous collaborations, but are considered the ones responsible for bringing Chinese cinema to the most restricted cinema circuits in Europe.
In addition to her ability to interpret, the beauty of Gong Li is considered unique in Chinese cinema. So even in such an innocent film as "Flirting Scholar" (1993), many takes with her have become classics in the history of Chinese cinema.
In the scene above, we see the moment when she looks in the direction of Tong Pak Fu (Stephen Chow) the first time the two meet. This camera shot had become classic shortly thereafter.

Um doce romance.
A sweet romance.

Nos anos 90, o cinema chinês teve uma fase bem ruim, com comédias e mesmo filmes de ação que eram difíceis de gostar quando se tinha mais de 15 anos de idade. Não sei se por conta de admirar tanto o trabalho pioneiro de Stephen Chow, que apresentou um novo tipo de humor ao cinema chinês, ou pelo romance das personagens dele e de Gong Li, acabei sendo cativado por esse filme.
É preciso "desligar o cérebro" por pouco mais de uma hora, e se deixar levar pelas cenas quase patéticas (risos) de Tong Pak Fu (Stephen Chow) tentando conquistar Chow Heung (Gong Li).  E você se percebe sendo levado por esse romance que nunca caberia num filme ocidental.

In the 90s, Chinese cinema had a very bad phase, with comedies and even action movies that were hard to like when you were over 15 years old. I do not know if it is because Stephen Chow's pioneering work, which introduced a new kind of humor to Chinese cinema, or because the romance of his characters and Gong Li, I was captivated by this film.
Tong Pak Fu (Stephen Chow) tries to conquer Chow Heung (Gong Li). You have to "turn off your brain" for just over an hour. And you realize yourself being carried away by this sweet love story that would never fit into a Western movie.

"Flirting Scholar" (1993) é um filme para qualquer pessoa que seja fã de um dos dois atores, que queira melhorar seu humor ou que esteja de tão bom humor que vai achar graça das cenas (risos). De toda forma, um filme charmoso, com cenas inacreditáveis como a batalha de versos de Tong Pak Fu (Stephen Chow) contra o erudito da Família rival e toda a sequência do casamento.
Outro ponto curioso, é a quantidade de atores consagrados presentes nesse filme. Mesmo Gong Li, havia acabado de receber uma premiação em Veneza no ano anterior por mais uma parceria com Zhang Yi Mou.

"Flirting Scholar" (1993) is a movie for anyone who is a fan of one of two actors, or for someone who wants to improve his mood or someone who is in such a good mood that he will enjoy the scenes (laughs). Anyway, a charming film, with unbelievable scenes like the battle of verses of Tong Pak Fu (Stephen Chow) against the scholar of the rival Family and the whole sequence of the marriage.
Another curious point is the number of consecrated actors present in this film. Even Gong Li had just received an award in Venice the previous year for another partnership with Zhang Yi Mou.
