Tung Hou 同好: Inside the Moy Yat Lineage [ 同好:走进梅逸一脉]

Eu comprei as duas.

On 14 November 2026, in New York City, Tung Hou 同好 (tóng hǎo 同好), the official magazine of the Moy Yat Institute, will finally be launched and made available for purchase. A publication that has the endorsement, support and direction of the Institute’s Global President, Grandmaster William Moy (pictured above).

You could then see me there, on a cloudy Saturday afternoon in Rocha Miranda. I was fourteen years old, and there was this video rental shop owned by the father of a friend of mine from kindergarten that later became a magazine shop. And that was where I found two issues of a magazine about Bruce Lee. It was 1998, and I was drawn to that magazine with its low-quality photographs, a strange publication whose only title was “Bruce Lee”, written in Comic Sans. But you know something? Bruce Lee looked as though he was about to come back to life, such was the intensity of those photographs.

I bought both of them. I gave up the Manga I had intended to buy. And it would be precisely those two magazines that, some time later, would make me recognise the old sign outside my Master’s former school in the West Zone of the city, where the words “Moy Yat Ving Tsun 詠春 (yǒng chūn 咏春)” were written.

So I think that all of us over forty have some story of affection connected to a magazine. One particular issue. A magazine we would read and reread over and over again. And perhaps that is exactly why taking part in the production of Tung Hou 同好 (tóng hǎo 同好) has been so special to me. And I simply cannot wait to share what we have been preparing!

An idea can travel, change form and still continue to carry something of its origin. In some way, perhaps that is also what I recognise when I think about a magazine that does not present professionals from several different martial arts, or even practitioners of the same martial art from different Lineages.

But rather, an innovative magazine dedicated to a single Lineage in all its depth: the Moy Yat Lineage.

The cultural value of a publication does not depend exclusively on its graphic quality, but also on the experience it provides and the relationships it establishes with the lives of its readers.

The photograph above was taken when the new Board of the Moy Yat Institute in São Paulo was presented. My Si Suk 師叔 (shī shū 师叔) Dorival Jr. was unable to be present, but he is also part of the Board. From left to right, you can see me there beside Grandmaster William Moy, followed by the local president, Senior Master Paulo Camiz, and the local vice-president, Senior Master Felipe Soares. I was deeply honoured to be there, standing alongside these people and taking on the role of Secretary-General of such an incredible project. And it is precisely by holding this position that promoting this kind of initiative becomes possible. Together with Grandmaster William Moy and my student Nathan de Assis, who is part of the magazine team, I have had the opportunity to be deeply moved by texts written by different people, from different Families within the Moy Yat Lineage.

So we have this idea, you know? There have been, and still are, countless magazines related to the martial arts over the decades. We are not creating anything new in that sense. A cultural creation can receive influences, circulate through different environments, transform itself and acquire an identity of its own.

So you may also ask yourself: how much do we really know about our own Lineage? How much material from our Lineage have we actually had access to? My Si Fu 師父 (shī fù 师父) told me a story, but what would that same story sound like if it were told by my Si Fu 師父 (shī fù 师父)’s Kung Fu 功夫 (gōng fū 功夫) brother, who was also there? Then the possibilities become infinite.

Two people who took part in the same event may remember different details, attach importance to different aspects, or preserve information that the other never mentioned. Tung Hou 同好 (tóng hǎo 同好) can, for example, offer a space in which experiences that were once scattered can be presented, connected and preserved within a shared genealogical context. Tung Hou 同好 (tóng hǎo 同好) will not need to go beyond the boundaries of the Moy Yat Lineage in order to find diversity. It will need to explore, in depth, the diversity that already exists within it.

The magazine will also be able to present elements drawn from the curation of the Institute’s collection, bringing Patriarch Moy Yat himself into the publication through those materials. And because it is a digital publication, you will be able to access it wherever you are, not only to read, but also to watch and listen to what it has to offer.

A format that would have been completely unimaginable to me when I was walking along Italians Avenue, on my way to my grandparents’ house, carrying those two issues of the magazine about Bruce Lee. Now, we will be able not only to help someone, somewhere on the planet, identify with the Ving Tsun 詠春 (yǒng chūn 咏春) System, but also to give members of the Lineage themselves the opportunity to appreciate it even more.

See you on 14 November!
