JACKIE CHAN 66th BIRTHDAY : HOW HE CHANGED THE GAME FOREVER

No último dia 7 de Abril, a lenda do cinema chinês Jackie Chan, completou 66 anos de idade. E muitos dos praticantes mais jovens que buscaram as artes marciais, o fizeram por terem tido contato com algumas das obras cinematográficas de Jackie Chan.
Dentre esses jovens, estava eu. Pois após assistir o filme "Drunken Master 2"(1994), minha paixão pelo Tae Kwon Do começou a dar espaço às artes marciais chinesas. Assim, comecei uma busca incansável por locadoras do bairro de Rocha Miranda, atrás de filmes "perdidos" de Jackie Chan...

On the 7th of April, Chinese cinema legend Jackie Chan turned 66 years old. And many of the younger practitioners who sought out the martial arts, did so because they had contact with some of Jackie Chan's cinematographic works.
Among these young people, I was there. After watching the movie "Drunken Master 2" (1994), my passion for Tae Kwon Do started to give space to Chinese martial arts. So, I started a tireless search for video stores in the Rocha Miranda neighborhood(north zzone of Rio), looking for "lost" films starring Jackie Chan ...

Esse filme foi importante para o cinema de Hong Kong, não só pelo esmero com relação às coreografias. Pois algumas chegaram a levar cerca de quatro meses para serem finalizadas. Mas o que realmente foi marcante nesse filme, foi o encontro histórico entre Jackie Chan e Lau Kar Leung...

This film was important for Hong Kong cinema, not only because of the care with regard to the choreography. Some of those coregraphies took up to four months to complete. But what was really remarkable about this film was the historic meeting between Jackie Chan and Lau Kar Leung ...

Quando Bruce Lee faleceu, o cinema de Hong Kong entrou em decadencia com o gênero de artes marciais, pois os produtores buscavam a qualquer custo um substituto. Depois de várias tentativas frustradas, Jackie Chan desiste de sua carreira e se muda para a Austrália, onde passa a fazer serviços lavando louças e outros empregos para sobreviver.
Paralelo a isso, Lau Kar Leung(28 de Julho 1934 – 25 Junho de 2013), que é um Si Fu de Hung Ga e experiente coreógrafo de filmes de artes marciais seria a pessoa responsável por uma virada histórica no cinema de Hong Kong: Ele idealizou e dirigiu o clássico "The Spiritual Boxer (1975)", que pela primeira vez juntava o gênero de artes marciais com comédia. 

When Bruce Lee passed away, Hong Kong cinema fell into decline with the martial arts genre, as producers were looking for a replacement at any cost. After several unsuccessful attempts, Jackie Chan gives up his career and moves to Australia, where he starts doing dishwashing and other jobs to survive.

Parallel to this, Lau Kar Leung (28 July 1934 - 25 June 2013), who is a Si Fu of Hung Ga Style and an experienced choreographer of martial arts films, would be the person responsible for a historic turn in Hong Kong cinema: He idealized and directed the classic "The Spiritual Boxer (1975)", which for the first time combined the genre of martial arts with comedy.

Esse novo gênero misturando comédia e artes marciais, permitiu que o gênio do cinema Yuen Woo Ping(foto à esquerda) tirasse o melhor de Jackie Chan. Não mais tentando transformá-lo num novo Bruce Lee, mas ao juntá-lo com seu próprio pai Simon Yuen(centro). Yuen Woo Ping lançou Jackie Chan no gênero que o consagraria em todo o planeta como um dos maiores heróis de ação de todos os tempos .

This new genre, mixing comedy and martial arts, allowed cinema genius Yuen Woo Ping (pictured left) to get the best out of Jackie Chan. No longer trying to turn him into a new Bruce Lee, but by joining him with his own father the actor Simon Yuen (center). Yuen Woo Ping launched Jackie Chan in the genre that would enshrine him across the planet as one of the greatest action heroes of all time.

Jackie Chan alcançou o reconhecimento internacional com o filme "Drunken Master", no qual ele apresenta de uma maneira simplesmente genial, uma arte marcial que se configurava a partir do momento que seu praticante se embriagava. Mais uma vez Yuen Woo Ping (idealizador do projeto), trouxe Jackie Chan e seu pai Simon Yuen fazendo o papel de Mestre e Discípulo, além de outros atores.

Jackie Chan achieved international recognition with the first "Drunken Master" in the 70s, in which he presents in a simply genius way, a martial art that was configured from the moment that its practitioner was drunk. Once again Yuen Woo Ping (creator of the project), brought Jackie Chan and his father Simon Yuen playing the role of Master and Disciple, in addition to other actors.

No início dos anos '80, Jackie Chan subiu como um foguete no mercado asiático, mas não conseguia atingir uma projeção que o levasse até Hollywood. Ele chegou a fazer algumas tentativas frustradas, mas as restrições dos produtores sobre o que ele poderia ou não fazer em cena, ou o fato de encaixá-lo num estereótipo, prejudicaram essa primeira tentativa. Foi então que Jackie Chan produziu e atuou aquele que é considerado o maior filme de ação da história do cinema mundial e o filme mais plagiado segundo o Guinness Book: "Police Story".

In the early 1980s, Jackie Chan skyrocketed in the Asian market, but was unable to achieve a projection that would take him to Hollywood. He even made some unsuccessful attempts, but the producers' restrictions on what he could and could not do on the scene, or the fact of fitting him into a stereotype, hampered that first attempt. It was then that Jackie Chan produced and acted what is considered the greatest action film in the history of world cinema and the most plagiarized film according to the Guinness Book: "Police Story".

O filme foi aplaudido de pé no festival de Cannes e mesmo assim, algumas pessoas se questionaram se Jackie Chan só sabia fazer filmes de ação. Foi então que ele produziu alguns anos depois, um filme extremamente premiado, principalmente pela direção brilhante de Jackie Chan com uma série de planos sequencia e pelo esmero da fotografia do filme: "Miracles" , que no Brasil ficou com o título de "Chefão por Acaso".

The film was given a standing ovation at the Cannes festival and even then, some people wondered if Jackie Chan only knew how to make action films. It was then that he produced a highly awarded film a few years later, mainly for the brilliant direction of Jackie Chan with a series of sequential plans and for the wonderful work of photography of the film: "Miracles"!

O filme contava com alguns atores consagrados do cinema de Hong Kong, mas precisa-se destacar a talentosa Anita Mui (Hong Kong, 10 de outubro de 1963 - Hong Kong, 30 de dezembro de 2003) , que era uma talentosa cantora e atriz e que fez algumas parcerias com Jackie Chan e que infelizmente faleceu muito cedo. Na foto acima, ela aparece de azul-marinho ao lado de Jackie Chan. 

The film featured some renowned Hong Kong film actors, but the talented Anita Mui (Hong Kong, October 10, 1963 - Hong Kong, December 30, 2003), who was a talented singer and actress and who made some partnerships with Jackie Chan and who unfortunately passed away very early. In the picture above, she appears in navy blue coat alongside Jackie Chan.

Aos 66 anos de vida, Jackie Chan mudou a história do cinema de seu país, fez o tão sonhado sucesso mundial a partir da franquia "A Hora do Rush"(Rush Hour ,1998) e inspira praticantes de artes marciais e entusiastas por todo o planeta. 
A mensagem que fica, é a da busca constante pela excelência, a da perseverança em busca de um sonho, e de que nunca saberemos o quanto nossas ações podem marcar para sempre a vida de pessoas que nem ao menos conhecemos!

The 66 years old, Jackie Chan changed the history of cinema in his country, made the long-awaited worldwide success starring the "Rush Hour" franchise (Rush Hour, 1998) and inspires martial arts practitioners and enthusiasts around the world. 

The message that remains is that of the constant search for excellence, that of perseverance in search of a dream, and that we will never know how much our actions can forever mark the lives of people we don't even know!
