How to reach to a new level in Ving Tsun

(Com Si Fu durante almoço no "Restaurante Rústico" no Brooklyn paulista)
(With Si Fu during lunch time in Sao Paulo)

Certa vez, em clima descontraído prestes a me despedir dele e do Si Suk Homero no estacionamento do antigo Mo Gun no Edifício Blue Sky.

Si Fu is not very supportive of "motivation". It seems to me that he believes that the moment we stop "motivating" a person, the person will naturally decrease his energy until he stops. Maybe that's why Si Fu always seems assertive and never seems to care about "please." He always says what needs to be said even though it is not so good to hear.
Once, in a relaxed mood about to say goodbye to him and Si Suk Homero in the parking lot of the old Mo Gun in the Blue Sky Building. Due to the context of the subject and with a smile on his face Si Fu stopped, he stared at me and said to me something like: "Thiago, you are a miracle from Ving Tsun, you know that?" I opened a spontaneous smile and shook my head, but Si Suk Homero laughed and I realized that it was Si Fu's amused speech: "... did not you know? You were super annoying, you just wanted to know about fight, you was dumbfounded, you was stupid, not stupid, but in the sense of packing with an idea and not moving from there," he said. "... And despite all this, you're here today telling me this ... "- Si Suk Homero burst into laughter and we all laughed. Si Fu said one last laughing thing: "Yeah Mister Thiago' ... Ving Tsun produces miracles too!" We hugged and he got into his car.

How to get to a new level in Ving Tsun

(Practicing "Chi Sau" with Thiago Silva at Si Fu´s former residence.
In the foreground, his younger daughter watching us )

I can still remember when in 2004, I began to feel bad for seeing contemporaries of mine accessing new heights within the Ving Tsun while I was stagnant in "Mui Fa Jong." People that I had easy to practice, now had a skill far superior to mine, and that seemed to me to have no explanation. They practiced no more than I did, so what was it?
Once in that year, Si Fu in a window of the old Jacarepaguá School said something like: "... Thiago, there is a moment in Ving Tsun when it is necessary to reach a new level of understanding. As long as you do not understand this other level of maturity, you will continue to hit a ceiling, if you go through it, it will be because you have understood what I am talking about ... "

I was slow to understand what Si Fu (photo) was talking about, but when I did, I found myself going a lot further than I imagined. I even opened a school  of Moy Yat Ving Tsun in Meier neighborhood in Rio, in which my To Dai Pedro Freire (photo) was the first to enroll. But in spite of that I found out much faster, perhaps because I was leading a process. That I was still stagnant in certain cases with certain ideas.

When I became Director of a school, I began attending more reserved meetings (photo) with Si Fu and Si Suk Ursula (photo), who at the time, was  beginning her career in the South Zone of Rio, still had a very significant management role in our Mo Gun.
I always admired Si Suk Ursula deeply, I thought she was perfect in what she set out to do and was very happy to have the same access she had to Si Fu. But I scarcely knew of the literally innumerable headaches that I would have every time on Tuesdays and Thursdays when leave the meetings with them.
Si Fu used to say to me: "Pereira, this time is precious, this configuration we have today with me, you and Ursula every Tuesday and Thursday will not last forever. ". But I could not understand what they thought. I used to bring about 20 topics to be discussed, Si Fu would stop at one and go with him until the end of a meeting. Sometimes he remembered a curious situation and the subject would go to other places that for me at that moment, ended up disturbing us.

I left these meetings with the same doubts, on the other hand, Si Suk Ursula and Si Fu seemed to understand each other very well. Although he barely passed her subjects, she seemed to know what to do when the meetings were over ...

So even though I was physically present, I could not connect heart to heart, as they did.

Recently, I was able to accompany my Si Fu to São Paulo, and witness his participation in a meeting in the "House of the Disciples" (photo). It was very interesting to see him interact with his Kung Fu brothers, including Masters, Qualified Tutors and experienced people. At no point  I noticed Si Fu clinging to his ideas, entering into a rhetoric, or being annoyed by something that was opposed to what was presented. I did not see him in a hurry to make a check-list of what had been proposed and move on to the next topic ... He only allowed himself to behave for each proposal or change presented, and adhering with his heart to what was proposed or opposed , Proposed a third thing.

Almost in the morning, back to the hotel (photo), we had a moment of feedback with Si Fu. Everyone said about the time of the meeting among so many that we lived that day. For me, after years of  work at Méier School, it was already possible to understand that a "Kung Fu meeting" does not necessarily give us what we  want to. We need to follow the flow, and connect in a deeper way than just mental to get what we need from the simplest speech. Maybe that's why, we say that in Kung Fu, we do not use the ears to hear, but the heart.

Beyond the challenge : It's not about the arts, but about people.

Time of delivery of the homage plaques to the members of the delegation
and delivered by Grand Master of Tae Kwon Do, Tung Cong Dinh.

What I write here are fragments of memories of a story told many times and in different ways over 18 years: The day when my Si Fu participated in a challenge.
Well, as far as I know, it was the end of the 90's, Natalia Imbruglia played on the radios and Si Fu with his Si Dai Fabio Gomes and Si Gung, they went to Kentucky by car, because Si Gung had been invited to give a lecture about "Ving Tsun Kicks" in Tae Kwon Do's biggest DoJang of the region.

(Before they went to Kentucky, Si Fu was at the Ving Tsun Museum in Dayton.
In the photo, we see him doing Chi Sau with Master Fabio Gomes, at the time, a member of the school directed by Si Fu in Jacarepaguá neighborhood in Rio).

(Master Fabio Gomes, was one of the masters who had their training under the tutelage of Si Fu, because they were residents of Rio de Janeiro, while Si Gung resided in São Paulo)

Si Gung was being received by Grand Master Tung Cong Dinh of Korean art of Tae Kwon Do. Grand Master Tung Cong Dinh is a great authority on Tae Kwon Do in the USA, promoting the art in a very special way in Kentucky, USA.
The entire Brazilian delegation, beginning with Si Gung, was treated with great appreciation by the Grand Master since the beginning.

(Si Fu demonstrates in historical photo session, the whole sequence of Siu Nim Do.
In the photo above, he demonstrates the "Ding Geuk". Photo taken by his daughter Jade)

Si Fu, who in the photo above makes a facial expression very similar to his daughter Jade, demonstrates the "Ding Geuk". This device of the Ving Tsun System caused me a great shock when it was presented to me for the first time, because the concept behind it is to allow an approach to another leg that is coming towards us or that is in our range of action. This goes against the general conception that we should use our arms to address this type of situation.

Here we see Si Fu in the 90's in the schools in which I began my practice with the Si Suk Daniel Lameirão, a skilled martial artist who later moved to Africa. Demonstrating another unfolding of "Ding Geuk" sometimes called "Bong Sau Hei Geuk".

(Si Fu is doing some video demonstrations also with use of leg moves in our Clan's
channel on youtube. Click HERE and sign up!)

The Ving Tsun only has the "Ding Geuk" and this causes some confusion because for the below average practitioner and also for the rookies, it is not clear that other leg movements are unfolding from the "Ding Geuk" understanding. Perhaps that is why, many years ago, this device became known in Brazil only as "Laan Geuk", when in fact, this is also one of the possible potentials of being able to behave from the knowledge of "Ding Geuk".

At the end of the lecture, the Master of the place wore his practice clothes. The Brazilian delegation noticed the movement and would have found it strange. It was when after the audience left, the host would have invited  Si Gung for a "friendly exchange".
Well, I do not know how it happened, but it does not matter much. It turns out that Si Gung accepted the invitation, but indicated Si Fu to represent him at that opportunity.Si Fu climbed barefoot at the practice spot, when he heard, in Portuguese from Si Gung
"raise his guard".

(Si Fu watches Si Gung performing "Ding Geuk" in the backyard
of my Si Hing Leonardo Reis family in Rio de Janeiro in 2001.)

"What caught my attention was the fact that Si Gung spoke Portuguese with me" - Si Fu would have said on one occasion to me. - "Because when we travel as a delegation, there is the combination of not speaking in Portuguese to anyone who does not speak our language so as not to create a situation with the person, it does not seem like we have a secret. So when he spoke with me in Portuguese, I  completely changed inside. "
(At Si Fu´s former place doing Chi Sau)

In our Clan Moy Jo Lei Ou, we always seek to maintain a tone of neutrality. This has much to do with the nature of Si Fu who passes this in a very appropriate way. We try not to be biased nowhere, just so any member of the Clan or outside, feel free to be part of it. Still, Si Fu once told me something like, "You can never refuse an invitation to do Chi Sau. Anyone, you have to accept it and make it in a honest way, hit if you have to strike. "

Time of delivery of the homage plaques to the members of the delegation
and delivered by Grand Master of Tae Kwon Do, Tung Cong Dinh.

Later that day, the party received a phone call from the GrandMaster Tung Cong Dinh who invited everyone to a dinner on hs own, the whole dinner was directed to Si Gung. But on account of the events that had occurred,Si Gung´s importance had increased even more.

(Si Fu leads his Master on New York Street in Brooklyn, São Paulo
Until the place where they would have lunch 19 years after the event)

Si Fu never made it very clear what really happened inside, so little, he received comments from Si Gung about his performance. Only when he arrived in Brazil, he was able to receive the greetings of kung fu brothers who did not travel with him but who were with Si Gung in Brazil before him. Only then could he understand what had happened.
On that occasion, Si Gung was respected enough and became much more, thus raising even more respect for his Master.

Master Julio Camacho using hands again.

Today´s reading is funnier with this track HERE

You could enter the Mo Gun of Tindiba Road(foto) in the 90's and be welcomed by my Si Fu (photo) Julio Camacho himself, then Director of the School. From the stories we know, if he noticed you were not very interested in chat, he'll just lift and make a demonstration, there, live! And so it was with me. His famous request on my first visit to the Mo Gun - "Give me a kick, whatever you want" - will stay forever in my memory.

The years went by, and the Si Fu of before receiving those interested in getting to know Moy Yat Ving Tsun, and would show incredible techniques, he did not do that anymore. He was not sad or anything, but had just changed his approach. So much so that even I, who was so fond of combat, I remember with more nostalgia among so many years, from 2006 (photo). This was a year that I do not remember Si Fu showing absolutely nothing, but he has never been so open to Kung Fu Life
(A lecture by Si Fu on the start of a new year for our Clan)

A gente vai tropeçando e acompanhando...

In those times, it was still possible to define what was the "Si Fu's way"  at the moment. Today, this is no longer so. Si Fu is always reinventing himself and resignifying his own life, changing so succinctly and at the same time conscious, that today it becomes much more necessary to be aware not to lose sight of him. We stumble and follow ...

Gradually, I saw Si Fu start demonstrating techniques again, to do Chi Sau to exemplify what he was talking about, etc. At that time I would run and shoot with my cell phone what I could. I did not know when it would be possible to see him doing techniques again! And then, on a quiet Tuesday this year, Si Fu appears showing techniques and allowing himself to be filmed!

Almost two decades passed until I could see my Si Fu in action again! And the wait seems to have been worth it! Today, my brothers and I can appreciate much more what he shows. And like in a movie where we feel half bad already because we know it will end. I already see these moments with nostalgia, because I know they will be just a blink of an eye in the unbelievable life story of Si Fu. But fortunately, all these moments are being perpetuated on the Youtube channel of the Clan Moy Jo Lei Ou (HERE).
Momentos não tão longos, apenas fragmentos... Fragmentos do Ving Tsun...

Not so long moments, just fragments, Fragments of Ving Tsun...

The Best Kung Fu Movies of All Time (os Melhores filmes de Kung Fu de todos os tempos!)

Once Si Fu was really mad at me in the mid-2000s for some mess I made in Mo Gun.
I remember the scolding about the fact that he was not there to "play", this place was his life: "When you step here, you better step carefully , because youre stepping on my dream." - He said to me, paraphrasing himself, when said that in the 90's to another practitioner.

Of all that is Si Fu said in that scolding, what touched me most at that moment of my life, was a phrase that he said something like this: "... Do you think I like these Kung Fu movies? I do not like Pereira! I prefer to stay home with my daughters! I do not have these fantasies, when I'm here, I take my time seriously! "- Si Fu turned away and left me there alone at the front desk with a silly face and something in my head : "Si Fu did not like Kung Fu movies like me!"

The Best Kung Fu Movies of All Time!

In the year that the Blog completes ten years of existence, we are back with a much-loved 2009 colunm called "Top 10". I can not guarantee the frequency of this colunm, lol, but I remembered it today, and this was a theme I had long wanted to write: The best Kung Fu movies of all time!

10- Come Drink With Me (Da Zui Hap) [1966]

A film of "Wuxia" little known in the West, but that it is one of the best films ever made in the history of Chinese cinema !!! Starring the living legend Cheng Pei Pei (who would star in "Jade Fox" decades later in "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon",2000). It tells the story of a son of a General who was kidnapped and Cheng Pei Pei in the role of "Golden Swalow" needs to rescue him with the help of the incredible "Drunken Cat" (Yueh Hua)!
This film eventually became the source of several scenes that began to be reproduced in other films in the following decades. Ang Lee, director of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"(2000) is a self-confessed fan of this production, and honors it by copying Cheng Pei Pei's famous fight with the bandits at the inn, when in "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon",2000" he filmed the scene Of the fight of Jen Long (Zhang Zhi Yi) at the restaurant!
Cheng Pei Pei was a dancer, and the director made a point of choosing her because he wanted to innovate in the aesthetics of the fights!

9- Shaolin Wooden Man ( Siu Lam Muk Yan Jong , 1976)

(Wooden Men´s Alley) .

Little people know, but it was in a movie starring Jackie Chan in 1976 that the audience for the very first time appreciated the "Muk Yan Jong" (wooden dummy) on the movie screens!
In the film Jackie Chan plays the role of a Shaolin practitioner (Siu Lam) who is mute. One day he meets a prisoner and begins to bring food to him. Jackie discovers that the prisoner is developing a technique called "Lion Roar" to escape the prison. Jackie begins to train with him, and decides to face the final challenge of Shaolin: "Muk Yan Jong Alley" (Wooden Men's Alley).
The impact of this film was so great that the Inside Kung Fu magazine in the 1980s even sent a reporter to investigate whether this location would have existed even in Shaolin (I'll post that story here later this month!).
The scene of the hall full of wooden dummies, was repeated in several other films like "Warriors Two" in 1978!

8- O Dragão Chinês (The Big Boss, 1971)

"The Big Boss" (1971) is simply the movie that launches Bruce Lee to stardom as the biggest name in martial arts in the chinese movies industry!
Taken from Hong Kong by his uncle to Bancock to live with his cousins, Chinese immigrant Cheng Chao-An (Bruce Lee) moves to work at the local ice factory, whose owner is involved in drug dealing and prostitution. With the escalation of violence, Cheng reveals himself to be a deep connoisseur of martial arts and defeats the gang.
This film started a more realistic trend in Chinese cinema, leaving the classic genre "Wuxia" aside for the first time!

7-  The Spiritual Boxer (1975)

When Bruce Lee died, many tried to take his place  but that was not possible. The realistic trend in martial arts films was expected by the public, but there was no actor capable of filling that void. It was when Lau Kar Leung, an experienced Si Fu from Hung Ga style and choreographer, writes the classics classic "The Spiritual Boxer" (1975), which tells the story of a man trying to get money from people in a village pretending to receive chinese deity spirits . When a band of bandits invade the village, he will have to use those powers in fact!
With a simple plot, Lau kar Leung simply invents a new sub-genre in the Chinese martial arts cinema: Kung Fu movies with comedy. In which the biggest name to date is Jackie Chan!

6- The One-Armed Swordsman (Duk Bei Do , 1967)

Talking of game-changers, not to mention "The One-Armed Swordsman (1967)" by visionary and acclaimed director and writer Chang Cheh would be a sacrilege!
Chang Che in this film simply invents a sub-genre that would even influence Hollywood called "Yang Gang".
"Yang Gang" is a sub-genre of the Wuxia sub-genre that presents the figure of the anti-hero for the first time to the public! In it, male characters prioritize friendship and fraternity above their own lives, increasing the drama of productions. Women play a minor role, and revenge becomes the main motivation for the characters in this type of movie!

5-  Trilogia de Zhang Yi Mou (Zhang Yi Mou´s Trilogy): "Hero"( 2002), "House of Flying Daggers(2004)"  e "Curse of The Golden Flower (2006).

The Curse of The Golden Flower(2006).

In 2004 Quentin Tarantino promoted the distribution in the West with Miramax of what is considered by many to be the best Kung Fu film of all time: "Hero" (2002) by Zhang Yi Mo. Later, we would discover that "Hero" was part of an engendered trilogy with two other films that communicate so subtly that many hardly know it is the same line of thought: The House of Flying Daggers (2004) and The Curse of The Golden Flower (2006).
It's three unbelievable movies! It's hard to imagine that all that came from Zhang Yi Mo! And when the third film starred in Brazil, a columnist for the newspaper "O Globo," compared the detail minutia of all the splendor of the Tang Dynasty represented in the third film masterfully with carnival costumes. At the time, I sent an indignant email, which was answered with an apology: "I did not know the full depth of the film, I apologize." -The reporter was not aware that as well as Chang Che, Bruce Lee and Lau Kar Leung. Zhang Yi Mou once again changed the Chinese martial arts cinema to a deeper view of Kung Fu. Proving that there was an audience for it. Unfortunately only at the end of the decade, the genius Xu Hao Feng appropriated from this potential in his films!

4- O Grande Mestre (Ip Man, 2008)

"Ip Man"( 2008) has a greater importance for the martial arts in general, and not only for the Ving Tsun (Wing Chun), than one imagines: This film restored the standards of the image of a Martial Artist in the popular imagination of the 21st century.
After decades, the film presents a character who, above all, is a human being developed thanks to the art he practices. And his personal values and way of life,  thrilled audiences around the world, raising Ip Man as a movie character on the same level as Wong Fei Hung. Another remarkable character that really existed and was immortalized in the movies!

3- O Tigre e o Dragão (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, 2000)

When I saw "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" (2000) in eighth place in the top 10 of the American box office on Telecine Channel , I jumped out of bed and cheered watching my 14 "TV: "Was that true? A Wuxia movie in the mainstream?" - I watched this movie about five times at the cinema. I did not want that moment to pass! - "A Wuxia at the Movies !!!"
Ang Lee, an passionate director for Wuxia brought to the western audience, a work based on a Chinese pentalogy, which in the cinema turned into a patchwork of scenes and references to several classic films like "Come Drink With Me" (1966).
The film made the Oscar feast with four statues, and only did not lead to "Best Picture" because it competes with "Gladiator" (2000). Thanks to this, this film opened the door for other productions of the same type to reach the West,

2- The Grandmasters (2012)

Decades after Lau Kar Leung and Bruce Lee have changed the film industry in China. Enters Xu Haofeng . As Ang Lee, who was a fan of Wu Xia novels in his youth, and  introduced the world to "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" (2000). Xu Haofeng brought the concept of implement in martial arts movies, a matching language with what actually happens in "Mo Lam" (term used for Chinese martial circles).
When I saw "The Grandmasters" (2012) it took me a time to process what had just watched: The Best Kung Fu movie I watched in my life! With impeccable dialogues that could be understood in several layers (including losses from Mandarin to Western languages), I found out later that Wong Kar-wai, the amazing director and creator of this project, had hired Xu Haofeng to write the screenplay  based in fact of Chinese Martial circles ... And the result was sublime!
It turns out that because of a flowery language, the richness of the dialogue is often inaccessible to the general public, which tends to prefer films like "Ip Man franchise" who care more for choreographies.

Xu Haofeng is ahead of his time as well as Lau Kar Leung and Bruce Lee were. But in this movie, this writer and director "from another planet" had the challenge to translate the details of a so complex relations system as "Mo Lam" (Chinese Martial Asrts Circles) for the general public.
For now, I can only say that "The Final Master" is a must watch!

1 - Enter the Dragon (1973)

Sim!

Yes! For mainland China only one more film, for Hong Kong, the chance to make the West discover the martial arts films, for that hemisphere, the emergence of a new genre: The Martial Arts!
If you have ever watched any martial arts film in your life, thank the existence of "Operation Dragon" (1973). Considered the greatest martial arts classic in the West, the film that lifted Bruce Lee to world stardom kicked off this genre in the West. Transforming Bruce Lee, who died before his debut, in the greatest icon of the martial arts of all time in the world!

When Si Fu (photo) became a filmmaker, for the first time in ten years of discipleship, I was not with him on a project! I did not participate in the recordings of his series "DDD21" and in time, I became aware of what I lost.
With the little that I witnessed in the first tests with actors, in conversations in breakfasts and moments after the project, now with more attention. It was enough to enjoy films like "La La Land" (2016) that before I would not understand the nuances.
And the magic of Kung Fu Life is in this too: Although Si Fu is not a Hong Kong movie fan like myself, I still had my place in the Family to gain knowledge to enjoy these and other movies. And I just did not go any further because I did not want to...

How to travel with your Master [Como viajar com seu Mestre.]

(Com Si Fu em Minas Gerais em 2013)
(With Si Fu in Minas Gerais State in 2013)

I can still remember the first lecture by Si Gung (photo). At some point, I do not remember well in what context, but I raised my hand to ask a question. He still did not know my name. I do not remember the question I asked, but it was about "personal values and helping people in need." Si Gung asked me what kind of "need" I was talking about. I do not remember what I said, but he asked me, "If you went down the street and saw someone feeling cold, would you give  your coat if you have one?" - I said yes. Then He asked me: "And if you find  a person who needs a pair of pants? Would you give your?" - I could not answer.

Como viajar com seu Mestre.
How to travel with your Master

For those who know me, you know how much my grandfather Carlos (photo) is important to me. He died in November 2007, and for me to this day it is impossible to hear Louis Armstrong's "What a wonderful world" song, his favorite.
When one discovers that someone has terminal cancer, it is very difficult. From the middle of 2006 until the middle of 2007 I was with my grandfather whenever I could. But once a month we spent the whole day together. I would clear anything I had to keep it. We always did the same script he liked. On these occasions, even with the little money I had, he would not let him pay for anything. When his cancer got worse, I started to buy with my Chinese teacher, a special tea she brought from China for me. I would do it and mine would. Tea cost US$ 200 a box in 2007, but I did not even care! The only thing I could not do at that time was to buy a Willys Jeep that he so fondly loved!
(the day I joined the Kung Fu Family)

But this was only possible, because of a lot of kung fu life with Si Fu who with patience over the years showed me through examples, how much an adverse situation does not prevent us to follow our values as caring for someone, this includes the lack of money Situation.
When I joined the Family, I could not understand why we took care of the transfer and lodging of Si Gung. If we were already hitting the value of the event in question, why was that still necessary?

(Jantar antes da partida para São Paulo)
(Dinner before the trip to Sao Paulo)

When we marked the trip to the Chinese New Year celebration with Si Fu (photo) in Sao Paulo. I, André Almeida (left in the photo) and Clayton Meireles (background), we did not have the cash needed for this trip. Even so, it was understood by all the importance of our presence alongside Si Fu, not only because of our "Integrated Management Project" of our Clan , but mainly to support him. Not that he needed it, he would travel even without the three of us, but on account of what I believe to be our commitment.
(Café da manhã na chegada)
(Breakfast at the hotel after we arrived)

We take care of everything: From the transfer back and forth to the small routes in São Paulo and our stay there were seen by us. The general idea is that Kung Fu is expressed in fine-tuning, careful attention, and also  that little detail no one else saw, and how we generate different kinds of resources to do it.
Today, I realize that when someone looks at me and says: "I can not do it, I can not!" - during a practice. There is no difference from any other time in our lives that we say to someone, or worse, to ourselves: "I can not do it, I can not!" - Yes, you're right, maybe you will not. After all, that's what you're saying.

I always thought what kind of magic Si Fu used, so that even in his worst professional moments, he would never fail to fulfill his obligations. Whether they were professional or private. After a long time, I begin to understand: Perhaps the secret to be able to travel with Si Fu and who knows anything else is precisely the question Si Gung asked me in that lecture: "And if you found a person That needed a pair of pants. Would you take yours and give it to him? "- That is:How far will you go for something that matters to you? - I can assert that you just need to be with your Si Fu until you realize that your parents may have given you your values, but perhaps, it is your Si Fu who will teache you to defend them.

Maybe if I thought like this between 2006 and 2007, I would know that somehow I could find a way to get a Willys Jeep, get my grandfather (photo) and go fishing and take him to Angra dos Reis and fish like he dreamed so much. But you know what? It will never be possible again. And perhaps it is the importance of learning to fight for something that is precious to us.

New Legends of Kung Masters

(Si Fu speaks details of Biu Ji to me during practice at the beach.
In the background, it is possible to see Si Suk Ursula)

E isso me mantinha ainda praticando.
- Tentei dizer alguma coisa, mas me faltaram palavras.
Ele sempre me golpeava sem me dar chances.

It was an afternoon any of a weekday in 2003, I was walking towards Si Fu's house. I was 19 and Si Fu had invited me to have a coffee with him in his own house, which at the time was an apartment in a tall green building on the Pau-Ferro Road in Jacarepaguá.

I always questioned Ving Tsun (Wing Chun) from 15 to 19 years old: "Hey, does this work?" - I thought - But in the same proportion that questioned the System, I never questioned Si Fu. And that kept me practicing.

Arriving at his house, he opened the door wearing a Moy Yat Ving Tsun's uniform and with a smile invited me inside. Jade, his daughter, was playing in a corner and we sat at a small table and began to eat. Gradually I got into the subject. There was a situation between me and a person and a possible confrontation could not be avoided sooner or later. - "Thinking about it now, I miss this kind of concern! It was way better than the credit card bill! "- As always I was surprised when Si Fu said as he ate the bread in a friendly mixture of seriousness and tranquility:" Okay, if you want, I'll turn you into a fighter! "- I tried to say something, but I was short of words. Since 1988 when I started to enjoy martial arts I expected to hear something like that! Perhaps realizing that he had muted me, Si Fu went on: "Now you are in Mui Fa Jong. If you brought me that theme two months ago, when you were in Biu Ji, I would answer something else!" - Hey! I could only be dreaming!

Si Fu got up and asked me to join him, he stood barefoot on the living room carpet, and Jade stopped what she was doing to look. I froze at him who said, "I'll show you some techniques you already know, in a version that may be new to you." - Si Fu demonstrated a simple "Pak Da" and a "Lap Sau". And it hit me with awesome speed and impact! I felt it on my back! With a silly grin on my face, Si Fu asked me to hold him and he showed at least 3 different ways to let go using only the "Huen Sau". He stressed that any technique in Ving Tsun could be used objectively. He  beat me without giving me a chance.

I could barely hold myself from the inside, and as we sat down again, we combined a period of special training, in which the focus would be only "combat": "Important to know, that this also includes being hit. Without getting hurt one can not learn to fight"- I did not care! And we scored that series of training sessions.

E envelhecendo dia após dia, vi as responsabilidades aumentando...

The next morning of the first day, I went to college with my mouth cut and bruised. I had the left side of my face purple and swollen, had been hit by Si Suk Diego the night before. But it was all partying at that moment! My college friends asked me what had happened, and I said I fell off my bike.
In the end, I did not have to fight the guy who took me to look for Si Fu (photo), and over time, this theme started to become less attractive to me. I've never felt invincible, and I doubt anyone would feel that way. And aging day by day, I saw the responsibilities increasing ...

(My grandfather observes me at the entrance of the Jacarepaguá School, after receiving my "Siu Nim Tau" certificate and receiving access to "Cham Kiu" in July 2000)

After my grandfather died, a lot of bad things happened. In those moments, I saw the need to use Kung Fu in another way. After all, you can not beat bad times. Just go through them. And there lies the biggest lesson that Si Fu could have given me, which was worth all those special training: "You just have to survive Thiago. Survive, to give time for this to pass."

It may be a debt that does not stop growing, a newfound illness, your kids with problems, or have lost a great love ... All these and many others are problems that can take us completely, and if we do not know how to defend ourselves, We will be dragged forever by them. Therefore, it seems to me that the best defense is not the attack, but "to survive", "to survive" until the next cycle.
