How to drink Coffee and play "Baat Jaam Do" : An experience with Master Julio Camacho

(Meu Mestre Julio Camacho)
(My Master Julio Camacho)

For those who have lived with my Si Fu Julio Camacho for the last 10 years, realizes that he usually asks for a drink at the end of the meal: An espresso.
My grandfather used to drink cold coffee in the works where he worked, he always tried to persuade me to have a "little finger of coffee"(as people say about "just a little portion coffee" in his hometown) after a meal, but I never accepted it. Unlike other countries, Brazilian coffee is served in small portions and is much stronger, so it was always difficult to drink coffee. Without sugar, it became unpalatable, and with sugar, it was too sweet. What to do? I preferred not to drink coffee.

Over the years, I tried to accompany Si Fu in his Segafredo cups at the end of the meal. But often the impression I gave was that I was drinking a sip of strong rum. I just turned the coffee and grimaced every time I drank. Therefore, my attempts to accompany Si Fu while drinking coffee, had an air of suffering and comedy that became some freak show sometimes.

Perhaps today, it will be easier for you to see me many times as someone who tells a funny story here and there, but there is a trace of my hard to change, which Si Fu always caught my attention, but I never gave much importance until I accessed the "Baat Jaam Do": The act of throwing me head first, like a suicide

(Learning Baat Jaam Do in 2009 with the help of Master Felipe Soares, who at the time practices in the Mo Gun of our Family.)

If in the final of "Mui Fa Jong" I would throw myself stupidly over the opponent and would rather take a punch as long as I touched the person as well, but in "Baat Jaam Do" this would no longer be possible.
And so, for someone like me, had many difficulties to understand this tool. At least with it I was able to review my own attitude by practicing "free hands": The same care to approach or invest with the knives, should be used with the hands.

So one day sitting with Si Fu somewhere I do not remember, when he saw that I would put sugar in the coffee, he asked me not to do it. I drank then as I always did, between grimaces and chills. Laughing, he stopped everything we were talking about and said something like: "First, you look at the coffee, then you smell it, then you put it in your mouth ... No, but do not drink at once!" - I refined the whole process up to that point and finally drank the coffee. Si Fu then asked if it was better. Strangely, the coffee was no longer averse to me: "You need to enjoy coffee with every possible way."

After that episode, I started to feel like drinking coffee at one time or another. Finally, I was doing what my grandfather always asked me to do. Maybe, not as often as he expected, yet I did. I could no longer put sugar in it, and in this way, I came to realize when a coffee was watery, strong, weak, or simply bad. It was quite an experience. I realized, the same could be done with other drinks.
(Me and Si Fu in the Louvre square, it was at that moment that I realized myself in Europe .)

Eu me achava apenas precavido, ou leal a algo.

If I was the inconsequential guy both in Ving Tsun practice and in life. These experiences such as the coffee one and the difficulties in dealing with "Baat Jaam Do", as well as personal experiences not so pleasant, led me to another extreme: To become a "fearful" man.
My fear of change or of risking has become very great. I would see myself just as a cautious man, or loyal to something. At least, that's what I believed. And thanks to this trip to Europe, I could see how far it had gone from one end to the other. Because while walking the streets of Paris, I remembered at times that I did not believe that I could be there just a month before. As I walked, I thought of everything I let pass because of fear , and how much I missed out on it. I smiled to myself, thinking of everything this awareness would make me realize that I lost by "fear."Because all that I had gained by force was already clear.

Well, if you're thinking about what it all has to do with "Baat Jaam Do," it's quite simple: If you throw yourself in an inconsequential way, you die. If you do not make the move out of fear, even if you believe it to be something else as a "precaution," you also die.The "Baat Jaam Do" then becomes an experience for appreciation as well as coffee Therefore, it is important to find the middle ground of this. You can start by tasting coffee without sugar, and maybe you end up enjoying an afternoon of sunshine in Paris, and who knows, go a long way later.
