UMA MENSAGEM DO PRESID. DA FEDERAÇÃO PARA SI GUNG ( A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF SAO PAULO STATE KF FED. TO SI GUNG)

(In the foreground Si Fu and in the background its me when I was still able to have fun with my knee)

In 2002, I do not remember what month. I had my first experience of Kung Fu Life, in which I took the lead.
I once passed by a soccer field for rent near  Mo Gun, and I called Si Fu because I thought it would be nice if the KF family could gather to play there. He left on my own to organize the entire event on Saturday morning.

That morning, very cool things happened. As far as I can remember and I can highlight, was the first soccer match in which Enio Lima, my Si Sok, played with his son Breno. Also that morning, the mother of the dear Si Sok Andre was undergoing surgery, but still, he called at a time that had time to see if everything was ready for the event to happen.

I learned a lot from these moments, and although for me there was not yet much sense in what they called "Kung Fu Life" at the time . But it was perhaps the first step so that later I understood its importance ...

VIDA KUNG-FU: Uma mensagem para Si Gung
(KUNG FU LIFE:  A MESSAGE TO SI GUNG)

(from the 90's a photo about the visit of brazilian commitive leaded by Si Gung and Si Taai to join Si Taai Gung´s birthday)

Si taai Gung Moy Yat was able to translate that feeling of those who live
Kung Fu life through an example:

"Later, when you have your own school, which technique you will teach your students?
What Kung Fu are you gonna teach?
You will not only teach techniques to them.
You have to tell them what you have done in the past days. Each day at school.
You have to tell them what you are doing when you are in Kung Fu Life. Let's say you have a group of students. You can not teach them Siu Nim Tau, Chum Kiu, Biu Ji and repeat them again.
They will not come to hear the same thing.
On the other hand, you have to tell them:
- You know, when you Si Fu went to New York to learn Kung Fu, he returned to explain his experience to us.
This is Life Kung Fu! "

This way of thinking  of Si Taai Gung Moy Yat, who values living through reports as a way of learning, was brought to Brazil by Si Gung Leo Imamura. Si Gung touched many people with this way of passing down his knowledge, as we see in the letter below, written by the then President of Kung Fu Wushu Federation of the State of São Paulo, Mr. Enio Cuono:

"The work achieved with Kung Fu and martial arts, gave me the opportunity to live and join with great masters, real idealists from this ancestral Chinese art. This allowed a deeper knowledge on the subject, bringing up other important points that are undoubtedly essential to the personal development of a practitioner.
The wonderful Grand Master Moy Yat is an example to be appointed, who knew how to teach wisely the Ving Tsun System and his knowledge to his disciples, especially to Mr Leo Imamura. That trough the called "Kung Fu Life", a sort of daily living with the master in different situations of day-to-day, a disciple can experience and demonstrate his learning.
As important as passing knowledge from the Master, is the disciple's cleverness to notice the simplest details while learning ...
The work of this excellent ... Mr Leo Imamura is essential for beginners in learning Ving Tsun ... "
(Mr Enio Cuono - 03 October 1991)

In 2013 has been 40 years since Bruce Lee died. And even he, whom all attribute a rebel speech  against the traditional way of transmitting an art. Had a great respect for his Si Fu, Patriarch Ip Man and his way of conducting his Kung Fu Family as seen below in a paragraph that Bruce Lee himself once wrote:
"Teaching requires a sensitive mind and with great flexibility. Above all, a teacher does not depend on a method or a systematic practice routine: He studies each student to explore and awaken themselves internally and externally, and to finally integrate to them own being. This type of teaching, which in reality is not a teaching, requires a sensitive mind with great flexibility, which is hard to find nowadays. "

Si Gung more than once already told us about when he went to NY to practice with
Si Taai Gung, and to enjoy every second of his time, practicing for hours. This made once Si Taai Gung Moy Yat stopped beside him and inquire: "Leo, dont you think you practice to much?"
Si Gung later understood the importance of take breaks during practice, stopping for tea * (* Yam Cha). In order to successfully reflect on the experience and get aware about what actually happened.

Lucas Eustáquio in the first day of MYVT Meier School started to run wild in 2011)

Once Si Taai Gung Moy Yat said that the difference between him and a regular practitioner, was that he was Si Fu 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Not only twice in a week for one or two hours. Because You can use your art in every single moment of your day-to-day.
Kung Fu Life, mediated by someone with experience to do so, shows the learner in everyday situations, as it could have used his Kung Fu in each of his acts.

Finally, I recently heard from my Si Fu that if we really refine our Kung Fu, we will do everything with art. There will be no more acceptable to be technically good, and a bad son, a bad father, a bad friend, o a more or less boss.
And that I learned at  my Si Fu's living room.

COMO CONSTRUIR UM MUK YAN JONG(HOW TO BUILD A WODDEN MAN)

(Muk Yan Jong do Núcleo Méier sendo reformado)
(Moy Yat Ving Tsun Meier School's Wodden Man under construction)

For me, there are no more doubts about the fascination from people to Muk Yan Jong. Never seen such "magic" involving an instrument in the martial arts world as the "Wodden Man".
Still remember this same "Magic" acting in me when I first came to the Mo Gun in April 1999, and for all the years that followed.
(Si Sok Diego and Ricardo working on the MYJ for the old Barra Neighborhood MYVT Studio ,2004)

But this "magic" does not arise from nothing. The Muk Yan Jong is usually mounted by the practitioners of the enclosure. Not necessarily by those in Mui Fa Jong Domain, but for everyone, because one day, these same people also will use it ...
(Si Gung durante bate-papo no Núcleo Barra - Rio de Janeiro, 2013)
(Si Gung Leo during a chat at MYVT Barra School - Rio,2013)

On the last weekend, Si Gung talked a few times about his moments with Si Taai Gung Moy Yat, and narrated a passage in which Si Taai Gung Moy Yat said: "... I do not teach Kung Fu techniques here. I teach Kung Fu. Understand? ". Si Gung said that at the time he said yes, but did not understand very well what he meant. Later, Si Gung noticed something that also shared with us this very last weekend: "... You do not teach Kung Fu. So how to teach something that can not be taught? "
(Reforma do Muk Yan Jong - Núcleo Méier , 2013)
(Muk Yan Jong under Construction - MYVT Meier School, 2013)

Si Gung talked a lot about respecting the time required for each one, and let that person lives the processes provided by contact with the  Kung Fu Family naturally.
I could quote in the post today, the work on preparing the Muk Yan Jong in MYVT Meier. A preparation which is counting on the participation of members from: Copacabana, Barra and Meier Branches
(André Almeida comes from another city 4 times in a week to MYVT Meier School)

For more than a few times, I received emails asking if I could pass the official measures of
Muk Yan Jong. In the first time I was quite amazed with the request. But then, with time, I realized that what many people do not understand is that learning measures, how to build, how it works, which have to be looser, which has to be more stuck, is not taught on a special day, with everyone sitting while some Si Hing or even Si fu speaks next to a board ...
(Pedro scared me as hell when he got my favorito cup. I tought that he was going to wet the brusher in the cup full of water, but the guy was just thirsty)

This learning takes place naturally. For anyone who is present at the time of the reforming of the Muk Yan Jong . And do not think anyone will be saying by your side how it should be done, inch by inch.

Si Fu have been several times in New York, as we see in the picture above in which he appears with Si Taai Gung Moy Yat and Si Sok Marcelo Abreu, accompanying Si Gung in a travel. But I never thought that Si Fu was some kind of millionaire who can make such a trip every year.
All of them have always been made in exchange for much personal sacrifice.

(Si Fu in front of the old MYVT Head-Quarters in NY. )

It turns out that in this type of travel, you can not wait for the "ultimate knowledge". Because it does not exist. Because in Kung Fu, everything is part of a never-ending process.

(Si Gung acompanha Si Taai Gung Moy Yat em seu ateliê)
(Si Gung wacthes Si Taai Gung Moy Yat in his studio)

Therefore, Si Gung on other occasions commented about the joy of knowing that in all his travels, Si Taai Gung Moy Yat never hidden or manipulated his daily life while he was there. Quite the contrary, Si Taai Gung Moy Yat  left Si Gung partake of his day-to-day life. Favoring his process of expertise in Kung Fu Life.

Thus, for many, many times, Si Fu made trips to New York, and after arrived there worked, worked and worked ... As we see in this photo above, when he carved the stamps of the ancestors on wooden blocks ...
(Si Sok Ursula, today leader of Moy Lin Mah Family, was 20 years old in this photo helping to build the old Jacarepagua Mo Gun in Rio)

The same happened with the leader of the  Moy Lin Mah Family, my Si Sok Ursula Lima, who often went to the Mo Gun just to participate in the maintenance of that. Especially when her Si Hing, my Si Fu Julio Camacho, was not present. Linking with what Si Fu told to Rodrigo Caputo during the latest Ceremony of our family: "... You do not call to Si Hing to know if he will be in Mo Gun so you can go or not. If  that's your time in the week, you must go.And often, you'll say: 'that's exactly because you can not be there, that I'll take the responsability to me' ... "
This also relates to Kung Fu Life that is accessible to all, but is everyone available to experience it?
(Rodrigo Caputo, Pedro Freire e Raphael Caputo pintam o MYJ do Méier)
(Rodrigo Caputo, Pedro Freire and Raphael Caputo painting the MYVT Meier´s MYJ)

And this knowledge of  Kung Fu Life, only reaches those who live it. As we see in the photo above, the demand was to paint the Muk Yan Jong. Before that, we had to prepare the material, prepare the place,  get right tone of paint, and then paint. What each one took from this process, it is up to them.
(Pedro Freire holds the paint can , and Alexandre Ribeiro wacthes him. This was minutes before the two boys get a shower of paint in a way that the physics can not explain)

So when you see those stories about the importance of the practitioner learn to forge weapons, or tools that he uses in his practice as a Muk Yan Jong. Do not wait for that special day where all your questions will be drawn and lessons will be passed. Not so. This happens every day, little by little. And by the way, maybe even yesterday you have not been aware about the opportunity that you lived.

THE GRANDMASTERS : A MASTER-PIECE! (THE GRANDMASTERS: UMA OBRA-PRIMA!)

Acabei nesse momento de assistir "The Grandmasters".

I just watched "The Grandmasters". The film written and directed by Wong Kar Wai which was finally released. And I must say that during the time I was in front of the TV I witnessed one of the best Kung Fu movies that I watched in my entire life!

In fact, I had won a copy in Mandarin only , of this movie from my Si Dai Marcelo Ormond, but the opening scene with the fight in the rain discouraged me and  I stopped watching because I thought it would just about fight untill the end .
Recently, my interest in the film was renewed when my Si Sok Jones commented that Si Gung liked very much. I wondered why, and what a surprise when my dear friend, the master of Hung Ga with over 20 years of work in Rio de Janeiro, Mr Luis Antonio, insisted on presenting me with a DVD of the film that received at the Moy Yat Ving Tsun Meier Mo Gun today.

I could make an entire post talking about how I was amazed with the beautiful photography, and the action scenes. But two things really caught my attention this masterpiece:
First: If you have the opportunity to learn Mandarin, do it! Look, the script written by Wong Kar Wai was not well represented in the limited film subtitles. The Masters in the movie communicate almost all the time through metaphors, who spend their hidden intentions. But that's not all ...

... In the arc of the film about Faat Saan (Fo Shan), the characters speak in Mandarin. And the choice of text, shows how cults Wong Kar Wai and his consulting team are. This is because the words are carefully chosen not only to form metaphors, but also to rhyme. Further enhancing the musicality already present in the Mandarin language. It's unbelievable!

The geniality of the script, highlights who are the masters in the history, through one´s ability with the language, thought and interpretation of what was said by the other. I must say have been a long of time that some movie touched me at that level! Please study Chinese if you can! Our languages in the west even though they are beautiful, does not address the breadth of chinese language.

And what about the scenes of Kung Fu? Well, the photography, action and drama direction, did a wonderful job! It made me running out of words, with all the scenes where the mastery of someone, was recognized through movement, but not because this one knocked the other. But because the two rivals throughout the fight are in another dimension where they can communicate without the use of words. As the fabulous scene where the Grand Master of Family Gong asks Ip Man to try to get the cake out of his hand. One of the characters watching the scene, tells the us what the script was trying to show in that scene, through the example of the technique explanation that the leader of Familia Gong is using.

If you was watching thinking about: "Is this really happened?" , "It did not happen with Ip Man!". Dude, watch again... Seriously, you look to the wrong place.

(Eu e Jade Camacho)
(Me and Jade Camacho)

Particularmente, o filme me emocionou muito.

Particularly, the film touched me very much. And obviously I remembered many people while I was watching. But I can summarize all these memories in the figure of Si Fu.
It's amazing that  me, A guy that always gave up so many things in life, is still walking the path of Ving Tsun. And this was only possible thanks to Si Fu.
Si Fu taught me not only the "techniques" I so wanted to learn, actually taught me a new way of living. Because while I was there  understand the dialogue of the movie, I remember him asking me to study Chinese  9 years ago and also remembered him with books by François Julien also years ago wich I felt super boring, studying in the afternoon at the Mo Gun with Si Sok Antonio Eduardo and someone else who I do not remember now. When I liked a scene more "slow" than one about "Fighting",I remembered him being patience with me for years when I was still trying to become the new Bruce Lee.  And more than  thank him, what you and I can do is assure ourselves that we humbly are going to try to do something similar with the same affection and care for the younger kung fu brothers and our future To Dai.

VING TSUN AND BRAZILIAN EDUCATION COUNCIL (MESTRE LEO IMAMURA E CONSELHO DE EDUCAÇÃO DO BRASIL)

(Universidade Gama Filho,2003)

As we see in the movies, the life at the College is about "party all the time"(Like Eddie Murphy and Rick James would say..or sing...) , a lot of trouble after parties, and of course, you would have 2 closest friends. Who would not be so popular as you, but they´d be with you in a great adventure, and in the end everything would be a´right.

But in my story that was not this way in 2003 when I was in College. When I was not trying to beat some Medicine course student in some arcade game in the main lunch room of my college, I was with my friends who was also martial arts students, trainning...

I ´ve always tought about how much fun would be to have martial arts as a discipline in my grade! Not Botanic or some boring discipline like that... And what I did not know was that in 1996 Master Leo Imamura did it already! Putting Martial Arts as a discipline in the Santo Andre City College´s grade with the permission of the Brazilian Goverment...

(Ving Tsun Athletic Association 2006: Si Sok Marcelo Abreu, Si Sok Fabio Gomes & Si Fu)

The new generation of martial artists, pays a lot of attention to contenders in tournaments like the UFC. But before them, there was a whole generation of Masters who founded the foundation for what today we could enjoy in martial arts.
Each Master gives his contribution to his art to it be preserved in the best way possible. So with Ip Man, in the second half of the '60s, with the founding of the Ving Tsun Athletic Association wich was the first official martial arts entity recognized by the government of Hong Kong, at the time, a British protectorate.

Here in Brazil, among many teachers who was outstanding in this first moment of martial arts in our country, I am proud to have as my Si Gung, Master Leo Imamura, one of those pioneers who in the '90s managed directly from the Ministry of Education of Brazil, the authotrization to put as an offiicial  discipline of Santo Andre City´s College : "Martial Arts"

Years later, I could enjoy a class with Si Gung and Si Taai at the Gama Filho University of São Paulo city (photo), in which the graduate course in martial arts had Master Leo Imamura and his wife, Mrs Vanise Imamura, as two of the teachers who formed the faculty of this pioneering project in Brazil. But this is a story that  you watch HERE.
